HP Product Research
My mac was having trouble. It would stop in mid-song or video.
I have burned out a hard drive (told due to old age), bought it about 5 years ago (~late 2007/early2008), and accidently fried my CPU (my fault). So, while the hard drive and CPU is only about 1 year old, I use it a lot and thought maybe it was almost over.
At first I did a disk check and a kinds of errors came up. Tried to fix, will maybe check again later.
The fan was coming on when nothing was really running, so I started the system monitor. It said "HP Product Research" was using 192% of my CPU !!!
I FREAKED out! I uninstalled everything HP and the CPU settled right down and the fan turned off (Phew!).
At first I was worried it was a back-door virus of some sort. Now I am thinking it is just HP incompetence.
Here is my question: Since I do not know how long this was going on, I am concerned this may have 'over-clocked' CPU, burning it up and the hard-drive. In other words, it seems like I just did the equivalent of putting a 'million miles' on my hard ware.
Does this make sense?
Has anyone else encountered this issue?
Not really interested in the $0.05 I would get from a class-action suite, but dang! HP doing anything to address this?
Is this now fixxed? Do I need to do more (other than forget I own HP products) :_)
Thx!

This is probably the source of all your problems. If your hard drive has multiple errors, and it couldn't be fixed (as seems to be implied by your statement), then you can have all manner of issues. Any time you have unrepairable hard drive corruption, you can easily have problems ranging from failure to start up at all to frequent crashing to individual apps misbehaving. Data loss is also a very serious possibility.
It is possible that your hard drive may be dying, so be sure that you have all data backed up. Then, I would probably erase the hard drive and restore the entire system from a backup made prior to the start of all these problems.

How best to update Dev from Production
Hi experts,
I have a project coming up and I need help in knowing how best to restore our BW development/VAL to be in sync with production, we intend to copy production into dev. I need ideas as I have to meet with basis team to figure out how best to do this without having complications down the line. Do you have any ideas or links on where I can get good information?
Hope to hear from you soon
Thanks

We are doing a product research on SAP TDMS(test data migration server) as we are planning to implement but at the same time we are looking for similar products like what other companies are offering and what other SAP companies are using, as We have heard that SAP TDMS is too costly and offers support only to ECC & R/3 .
My question, is there any product that is similar to SAP TDMS that is less in cost and offers more services to look into ECC, BW,AP0,R/3 etc,.and
secondly what other companies are using .
Please do reply. -
Mid 2010 15" Macbook Pro Random Shut down and Restart
I know this questions have more than likely come up a few times. But I have a mid 2010 15" Macbook pro that, for the last year, has randomly shut-down and restated displaying an error message each time. I have had this computer into three different computer repair shops over the last few months, two of which were apple certified, and have had a range of reasons provided for the issue. Anything from Motherboard to hard drive to virus. I have replaced the hard drive, did a complete reformat three times, and downgraded my OSX. But I still have the same issue. I recently came across some support tickets referring to an issue with this model of Mac, something to do with the graphics card. I downloaded a program that was supposed to be a work around, but am still having shutdown issues. I also heard that apple did a free replacement of the motherboard on these machines within 3 yeas of purchase. Obviously I am past that point, but I was hoping that there would be some other suggestions. I have ran an etrecheck on my machine and have attached it below. Can anyone provided any ideas of how I can fix this without having to buy a new motherboard?
Thanks for the help...
Cheers,

Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list. Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

0 B Page-outsI stumbled upon a forum discussion of EtreCheck. It seemed like a good way to be proactive for problems
It isn't. Below is a good way to be proactive for problems.
How to maintain a Mac
1. Make two or more backups of all your files, keeping at least one off site at all times in case of disaster. One backup is not enough to be safe. Don’t back up your backups; all should be made directly from the original data. Don’t rely completely on any single backup method, such as Time Machine. If you get an indication that a backup has failed, don't ignore it.
2. Keep your software up to date. In the App Store or Software Update preference pane (depending on the OS version), you can configure automatic notifications of updates to OS X and other Mac App Store products. Some third-party applications from other sources have a similar feature, if you don’t mind letting them phone home. Otherwise you have to check yourself on a regular basis.
Keeping up to date is especially important for complex software that modifies the operating system, such as device drivers. Before installing any Apple update, you must check that all such modifications that you use are compatible. Incompatibility with third-party software is by far the most common cause of trouble with system updates.
3. Don't install crapware, such as “themes,” "haxies," “add-ons,” “toolbars,” “enhancers," “optimizers,” “accelerators,” "boosters," “extenders,” “cleaners,” "doctors," "tune-ups," “defragmenters,” “firewalls,” "barriers," “guardians,” “defenders,” “protectors,” most “plugins,” commercial "virus scanners,” "disk tools," or "utilities." With very few exceptions, such stuff is useless or worse than useless. Above all, avoid any software that purports to change the look and feel of the user interface.
It's not much of an exaggeration to say that the whole "utility" software industry for the Mac is a fraud on consumers. The most extreme examples are the "CleanMyMac," "TuneUpMyMac," and “MacKeeper” scams, but there are many others.
As a rule, you should avoid software that changes the way other software works. Plugins for Photoshop and similar programs are an obvious exception to this rule. Safari extensions, and perhaps the equivalent for other web browsers, are a partial exception. Most are safe, and they're easy to get rid of if they don't work. Some may cause the browser to crash or otherwise malfunction. Some are malicious. Use with caution, and install only well-known extensions from relatively trustworthy sources, such as the Safari Extensions Gallery.
Only install software that is useful to you, not (as you imagine) to the computer. For example, a word processor is useful for writing. A video editor is useful for making movies. A game is useful for fun. But a "cache cleaner" isn't useful for anything. Cleaning caches is not an end in itself.
Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it. Otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve. Do not rely on "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.
4. Don't install bad, conflicting, or unnecessary fonts. Whenever you install new fonts, use the validation feature of the built-in Font Book application to make sure the fonts aren't defective and don't conflict with each other or with others that you already have. See the built-in help and this support article for instructions. Deactivate or remove fonts that you don't really need to speed up application launching.
5. Avoid malware. Malware is malicious software that circulates on the Internet. This kind of attack on OS X was once so rare that it was hardly a concern, but malware is now increasingly common, and increasingly dangerous.
There is some built-in protection against malware, but you can’t rely on it—the attackers are always at least one day ahead of the defense. You can’t rely on third-party protection either. What you can rely on is common-sense awareness—not paranoia, which only makes you more vulnerable.
Never install software from an untrustworthy or unknown source. If in doubt, do some research. Any website that prompts you to install a “codec” or “plugin” that comes from the same site, or an unknown site, is untrustworthy. Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must come directly from the developer's website. No intermediary is acceptable, and don’t trust links unless you know how to parse them. Any file that is automatically downloaded from the web, without your having requested it, should go straight into the Trash. A web page that tells you that your computer has a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with it, is a scam.
In OS X 10.7.5 or later, downloaded applications and Installer packages that have not been digitally signed by a developer registered with Apple are blocked from loading by default. The block can be overridden, but think carefully before you do so.
Because of recurring security issues in Java, it’s best to disable it in your web browsers, if it’s installed. Few websites have Java content nowadays, so you won’t be missing much. This action is mandatory if you’re running any version of OS X older than 10.6.8 with the latest Java update. Note: Java has nothing to do with JavaScript, despite the similar names. Don't install Java unless you're sure you need it. Most people don't.
6. Don't fill up your disk/SSD. A common mistake is adding more and more large files to your home folder until you start to get warnings that you're out of space, which may be followed in short order by a startup failure. This is more prone to happen on the newer Macs that come with an internal SSD instead of the traditional hard drive. The drive can be very nearly full before you become aware of the problem.
While it's not true that you should or must keep any particular percentage of space free, you should monitor your storage use and make sure you're not in immediate danger of using it up. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of free space on the startup volume for normal operation.
If storage space is running low, use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the most space. Move seldom-used large files to secondary storage.
7. Relax, don’t do it. Besides the above, no routine maintenance is necessary or beneficial for the vast majority of users; specifically not “cleaning caches,” “zapping the PRAM,” "resetting the SMC," “rebuilding the directory,” "defragmenting the drive," “running periodic scripts,” “dumping logs,” "deleting temp files," “scanning for viruses,” "purging memory," "checking for bad blocks," "testing the hardware," or “repairing permissions.” Such measures are either completely pointless or are useful only for solving problems, not for prevention.
To use a Mac effectively, you have to free yourself from the Windows mindset that every computer needs regular downtime maintenance such as "defragging" and "registry cleaning." Those concepts do not apply to the Mac platform.
A well-designed computing device is not something you should have to think about much. It should be an almost transparent medium through which you communicate, work, and play. If you want a machine that needs a lot of attention, use a PC.
The very height of futility is running an expensive third-party application called “Disk Warrior” when nothing is wrong, or even when something is wrong and you have backups, which you must have. Disk Warrior is a data-salvage tool, not a maintenance tool, and you will never need it if your backups are adequate. Don’t waste money on it or anything like it. -
Please help with my incessant spinning wheel of death!
I have almost always had the spinning circle of death… Almost the whole life of this late 2011 15" 4 GB mbp. I just can not easily use this computer anymore. It takes so long to do anything. I need to exit all apps but the one I am using to make it work. I have to restart is almost daily to make it do much. So frustrating! Please help!
I already tried a disk repair under disk utlility with no issues shown.
I read on another post to run an etrecheck app and to post that info. Here is what it says.

Wha can I do?More RAM would help 4 GB is about the minimum required. The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a machine supposedly limited to 4 GB.

Uninstall and test. RIM has caused other people problems and definitely un-install Trusteer. Un-install using the developer’s instructions to make sure you remove all parts of the application.

And max out your RAM - you only have 2; no wonder everything takes that long. Here are the specs for your model:

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

I have updated my iMac(2009) from Mountain Lion to Mavericks, after a week or so, my applications icon is gone, left the words below it, apps like iMessage, Contacts, Mail, Apps Store, etc. I can't open any of them, My GoPro Studio App's icon is gone too, but i can open it and operate it... Please help me!!
After running Safe Mode, the icon are back, but still the applications can't be open... But here's the results, hopefully this can help out.

My MacBook Pro is running really slow.
Hey. My MBP has been running very slow for some time, and its becoming very frustrating. Straight after I start it up it starts running slow...I have 'Memory Clean' (not sure whether this is helpful or not) and as soon as i my Macbook loads it tells me i have less than 25MB of RAM available, so i have to use the clean memory function, yet this doesn't really seem to release much RAM.

MacBook Pro - A good config for me?
Hi,
I'm looking to buy a laptop, and the feeling I'm getting after a good deal of product research, forum-lurking and question-asking is that the MacBook Pro might be a wise choice for me. Some people have suggested that I simply go with a MacBook, but I really like the idea of having some extra "oomph."
So I'll ask you guys, you seem to know your stuff.
My needs aren't too hefty I guess, the most I can think of that I'll be doing is using Creative Suite to make graphics and design a webpage or two (I'm also planning to go into Graphic Design and Computer Science eventually). What I'm looking for is something that'll suite my needs and go fast, very fast! I've rather outgrown my old Dell desktop. (By the way, yes, I'm looking to "make the switch," I'll be totally new to Mac ownership; the most I've ever done is go to my local Apple Store a few times and play about. And I must say, I'm looking forward to the experience. ;))
I don't think I need too much RAM, I'm not wanting to use my Mac for a full-fledged profession (at least not yet). So I want to avoid overkill, but I'd prefer some room to breathe, too.
I heard about buying RAM from third party suppliers to save money, but the idea makes me a little uneasy. How reliable are their products? And, is buying from them going to void my warranty?
I know about Rosetta and how Photoshop and such won't perform too great on the new Intel Macs until Adobe releases the universal CS3, hopefully sometime next year. And fortunately for me, I'm still in the process of saving my money, so perhaps by the time I have enough to purchase my Mac, CS3 will be available and I won't have to worry about whether or not Creative Suite will run well.
Basically my main question is (and I apologize for sharing my life story ;)), what might you all suggest to be a good configuration for me? 1 GB of RAM? More than that? I'd like the breathing room of a 100 GB hard drive...oh, and is there a major difference in 2.0 GHz and 2.16GHz? Which should I go with?
I'm trying to not spend too much money, but I'm willing to save as long as I need to (with the exception of a year from now; I'd like to have a laptop by college time) if it means getting myself an amazing computer!
