Searching Oracle 8.1.7 Client for Solaris on x86/Intel
Hi all,
I need an Oracle client 8.1.7 running on a Sun Solaris on a Intel/x86 chipset (in VMware)
Exists there any location to download this client?
thanx for help!
Andreas
Salzburg, AustriaAre there plans to have a Solaris x86 version downloadable on OTN? I am making the OS decision for a new development server. I would like it to be Solaris x86 but if Oracle is a no-go on Solaris x86, I will have to use Linux or... hate to say it... M$

No /dev/lp? on COMPAQ Proliant ML370 with Solaris 8 x86 10/00
Dear Sir,
I have a problem about the /dev/lp? port in Solaris 8 x86 with COMPAQ Proliant ML370. I have seen in the boot interpreter it has detected a parallel port
device isa/lp@1...., but after I boot -r to start Solaris 8
OS it don't make any /dev/lp? or /devices/isa/lp*... and if
I mknod /dev/lp? myself it cannot print out ( I use cat /etc/hosts >> /dev/lp1, /dev/lp1 major=83 minor=1 ) It say "cannot create". I wonder why this happens, If I install this Solaris 8 x86 on other PC model. It has /dev/lp1 and can print out successfully. I try many ways such as: upgrade latest ROMPAQ BIOS firmware,
install lp driver patch set, install acpi patch. But still don't work. I found that serial ports (asy) which are ACPI is working because I can redirect console to serial port (asy).
Do anyone have the idea to solve or track down this problems. Thanks a lot...Check out the HP Compaq web site and you shuld be able to find the Solaris drivers that are needed. http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/19340.html

Solaris 10 x86 JumpStart install not working
I'm working with several Compaq DL380 servers.
I've installed Solaris 10 x86 3/05 onto DL380 #1, and created a 3GB servername.flar Flash Archive of that system.
I've moved that .flar file to a local web server. I can bring it up in any host's browser on the local subnet, and am able to download the .flar file.
Now, on DL380 #2, I can install Solaris from CDs and open Mozilla and download the 3GB .flar file to /tmp. So, it is reachable. However, if I do a re-install, and this time specify a JumpStart install via HTTP, entering the URL that works, the install program tells me that it can't find a Flash Archive there. I'm entering the URL as http:/10.20.30.40/servername.flar, where 10.20.30.40 is the local web server. This is the same URL that works on other local hosts. (i.e. going to http:/10.20.30.40/ brings up the list of files, and a right-click on servername.flar gives you the option to download it, which I've tried and it does work - it takes a few hours, but it works)
I tried HTTPS first and when I encountered this issue I reconfigured the web server for just HTTP. Then I thought the Flash archive must require a .flar filename extension (I had originally called it servername.archive) so I created a new Flash archive with a .flar extension - servername.flar.
So, the same system, when installed from CDs, can access the web server and download the .flar file, but when re-installing and specifying the same URL it can't find it. I'm giving the DL380 #2 the same IP, same netmask, etc.. when doing the re-install.
I can't think of anything else to try. Any ideas?
thanks!Here is the error output:

Solaris 10 x86 jumpstart installing from cd instead of install server
Hi all,
I am building a Solaris 10 x86 jumpstart server and was able to jump the client to a certain point. The jump appears to be running but for some reason stops after the first CD ( very peculiar considering the jumpstart is automated). After watching the jump, I discover that the install is using my CD to install rather than from the install server. It is, however, getting the sysidcfg info, rules and profiles from my install server. I booted from CD and then selected Custom Jumpstart to install via the network. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?
Here is my add_install_client command:
/jumpstart/OS/Solaris_10_x86_2006-06/Solaris_10/Tools/add_install_client -s server1:/jumpstart/OS/Solaris_10_x86_2006-06 -c server1:/jumpstart -p server1:/jumpstart/Sysidcfg host1 i86pc
Here is the output from that command:
Adding Ethernet number for jre-dlt to /etc/ethers

module /I86PC.Solaris_10-1/x86.miniroot
BTW, can someone tell me how to create a grub floppy? Can't seem to find any documentation on that!
Thanks in advance,

Solaris 10 x86 ipfilter aggr problem
Hi, all.
I have Solaris 10 x86 machine
Kernel Patch: 142910-17
IP patch: 143593-05
The problem shortly:
I am using two network LACP interfaces
aggr125030 contains e1000g1 interface
aggr150031 contains e1000g2 interface
Aggregation 31 was created by:
dladm create-aggr -P L3 -l active -T short -d e1000g2 31
and works fine.
If I add policy based routing rule:
pass out quick on aggr125030 to aggr150031:y.y.y.y proto tcp from x.x.x.x/32 to any port = 25 keep state
traffic matches the rule (it is observed through ipfstat -inohv command) but the rule doesn't work.
How did I decide? I have also ipnat rule
map aggr150031 <skipped>
so if PBR works, the ipnat rule is working too.
If I remove the second aggregation interface aggr150031 and pass the physical interface explicitly, the rule works:
pass out quick on aggr125030 to e1000g2:y.y.y.y proto tcp from x.x.x.x/32 to any port = 25 keep state
as well as the ipnat's one.
x.x.x.x is IP address of e1000g2 interface (or aggr150031)
y.y.y.y is IP address of router for x.x.x.x IP address
It seems that PBR for Ipfilter doesn't support aggregation interfaces for outbound.
Also if you combine vlans 125 and 150 withing one LACP (aggr150031 is replaced by aggr150030 and one physical interface is used for both vlans trunking), the PBR rule doesn't work too.
What shall I do?The problem was caused by the ipfilter behavior - ignorance of interface alias. My ipnat rule was:
map aggr150031:1 ...
I have changed into:
map aggr150031 ...
and the things began to work.
Sorry for the noise. -
Solaris 8 x86, intel 810E motherboard
hi,
does anyone know where i can find a driver for the intel 810E
motherboard (w/ built in AGP video)? this chipset is fairly
new (4-5 months), but it seems like it's going to replace all
of the midrange 440BX hardware.
all of the new midrange (US $1K-2K) compaq and dell systems use
this board, so SOMEBODY has to have a solaris x86 driver for it.
the new chipset (intel 82810) is very integrated, of course, and
the video section is evidently based around the i740 chipset.
any ideas? 'till then i'm stuck in 640x480 limbo. i'd put a HCL-
approved card in for now but for the fact that my new box (compaq
deskpro EN SFF [small form factor] 600Mhz P3) doesn't want to
disregard the built in video in favor an installed Matrox board.
thanks

Solaris 8 Intel install problems
I'm a noob to this, I try to install the Solaris 8 Intel on AMD XP as second os (XP Pro 1st os) but failed. I get this error message:
error: Configuration error - missing controller?
The root file system is not mounted and the configuration assistant has exited prematurely.
Booting is unlikely to succeed. CTRL-ALT-DEL may be used to reset the machine.
Failover to boot interpreter - type ctrl-d to resume boot
>
I tried ctrl-d it didnt work like it said and give these error message:
Cannot load drivers for
(can't load the root filesystem)
Please help, thank youDid you get any help with these problems? I am worried now beacuse my install files are nothing like these sizes. I unzipped a v1-a to 128 Kb.
Did you find some isntructions? Could you forward them to me because I cannot find any. Thank you.
Mike
Hello,
I'm trying to create the 3 iso files from the Solaris
8 Intel download and am having
a problem with the iso formed file sizes. Two of the
iso files, the "install.iso"
and "v1.iso" are larger than 700 meg. (which is the
limit on my CDs) They are
944 meg and 729 meg respectively.
The sun intructions say to create the iso files from
the zipped files I downloads after
unzipping them. Well, combining 3 files each into
each iso file for the CD image is
creating these large iso images.
Is this the right procedure?
Also, do I even need the install.iso image as I see a
lot of talk on the newsgroups
about starting a fresh Solaris 8 install with CD 1
("v1.iso")?
Thank you!

Solaris 8 intel install problem
When my Solaris 8 install gets to the spot where it asks for the language to use (0-9, english is 0, which I want), anything I hit on my keyboard sends bogus VT codes to the screen. Earlier in the install process (when it asks for solaris interactive vs custom for example), my keyboard works fine, I can choose 1 or 2 there.
Has anyone else seen the problem? I've tried multiple keyboards, and they all do the same thing.Sounds like the dell keyboard problem:

Solaris 10 x86 jumpstart patch problem
I'm trying to jumpstart and deploy the patch using the profile file(classfile). I does work well on the sparc however I seem to have an issue with x86. The line in profile file looks like this
patch patch_order nfs server1:/patch/10_x86
patch patch_order nfs server1:/patch/10_x86/10_x86_Recommended
The same directory "patch" is shared for sparc and x86 and all directory have the same permission.
Every time I jumpstart, I get this error message
Installing patches now
ERROR: Could not mount server1:/patch/10_x86 for patch install
ERROR: Could not mount server1:/patch/10_x86/10_x86_Recommended for patch installThe problem was caused by the ipfilter behavior - ignorance of interface alias. My ipnat rule was:

Solaris 10 x86 CD install - stops after cd1
Experienced linux user.
Recent new second hard drive means I can install Solaris.
Downloaded and burnt CDs (5)
CD1 boots. Used text based installer. Installed to 2nd partition on primary IDE slave drive. Grub to MBR on this drive then plan to either boot changing BIOS boot or chain load from Lilo on master hd MBR.
CD1 install set-up fine(I think I answered right)starts to install software - after approx 15-20%. Stops. Tells me CD1 installation complete and reboots.
However -reboots succesfully to GRUB but no menu or unable to boot kernel using GRUB root and kernel commends.
CD2 never requested.
Any help would be appreciated.
HHOK -no replys
Have now sorted myself by using DVD download and installing on first patition of second hd. Still need to change boot disk in bios to boot so trying to work round this.
Solaris seems very good.
Will now try to get speedtouch 330 usb modem working so I ca connect to net.

Solaris 10 x86 JDS login problem
Greetings,
After working flawlessly for a week or so, I suddenly am unable to log in to JDS. After I enter my login information, the screen goes blank, an hourglass icon appears, and then I am kicked back out to the dtlogin display. I can log in with CDE just fine.
This happens with root, my user account, and a brand new user account I just created. All the permissions on my home directory are fine (and I did a chown -R of everything, just to be safe). This happens both with Xorg and Xsun. I also tried rebuilding the font cache, as an earlier post on this forum had suggested that.
I originally had thought it might have been a patch problem, but I backed out of every JDS and X patch, and I still can't log in.
There are no error messages in the Xorg logs or any of the files in /var/adm or /var/log.
I'd greatly appreciate any help or pointers you all might have. Thanks muchly! This is likely to be totally unrelated to your problem but I can't help wonder. And perhaps you may pick up something usefull to debug your problems...
I have seen this behaviour a few times on KDE. After carefully checking it turned out that some of its datafiles (in ~/.kde) were setup with the wrong permission bits thus making it impossible for me to read/write it (and automaticly overwrite). Now I can't help wonder if this isn't happening to you too, in some issues KDE and Gnome act quite alike.
A possible option to debug this would be to try and start the Java Desktop from the console. To this end you'd need to put the commands needed to start JDS in your ~/.xinitrc file after which you should be able to use 'startx' to see if it'll run. Make sure you use > and 2> to capture the logs it produces since that will likely help you to find the cause of your problems. -
Sol8 x86 routing install problems
I've been banging my head against the virtual wall for a week over this one. I've installed Sol8 x86 on an e-machines 600 with a 40-gig drive (the OS is properly patched) and everything appears to be working fine, but I can't ping or traceroute to anywhere. The NIC has been swapped (and Solaris re-installed), the cable has been replaced with a known good cable, I'm getting activity lights on both sides of the cable, and my routing seems to be set up properly. Other machines (all NT) work just fine on this hub, so it's not an outside hardware or communications issue. The interface is configured properly with a netmask of 255.255.255.192, broadcast on x.x.x.63, and the routing tables show good routes (yes, I set up a default router in /etc). Today, I went ahead and re-installed everything from scratch, and still I get nothing - it's as if my system is on a network of one. I've come down to one of two possibilities: either Solaris isn't compatible with e-machines, or the ATA driver/patch for the 40 gig drives doesn't like handling communications. Any ideas, or has anyone else successfully installed Sol8 with the above configuration?
What is the NIC on an eMAchine? Is it on the HCL? What chip does it have?

Solaris 8 4/01 Install Problem on Compaq Deskpro
Howdy,
I am trying to install Solaris 8 4/01 on a Compaq Deskpro 6000 but I am having a problem at the reboot phase. The instructions indicate that I need to eject the Install CD after the system resets and before the memory test/HW detection phase. My question is, how do I know when this occurs...there is no screen output to tell me when this is happening. Also, The system seems to hang on reboot on a Compaq Logo screen with the hourglass just sitting there doing nothing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
DennisDennis,
The installation program should tell you when it is going to restart the system. You will be asked to 'press any key/enter to continue."
Immediately when your system is restarted, remove any CDs from your drives.
If your system is hanging while it is showing the Compaq logo, trying pressing the 'ESC' key so that you can see what is actually going on.
I hope this helps.
