Hp scanjet 3970

My hp scanjet 3970 lights up, but how to obtain a scan?
I have not used it for some time and, at age 76, I have become a little forgetful.
I use Windows 8.1, Firefox, and an ACER laptop.
When I turn on the plug for the scanner, the bed of the scanner lights up, that is, the scanner is well connected to the system, but what is the next step please to obtain a scan?
Unfortunately, I don't have an icon for my scanner when I go to the Control Panel.
Many thanks.

  • Is there a driver for eh HP Scanjet 3970 that will work with lion?

The scanner worked fine under snow Leopard.
    HP Scanjet 3970

Gee. not sure I can remember all the steps! It was so much a trial and error process.
I ended up with these apps installed:
VueScan  ( free version) , HP Device Manager Version 1.4.7 (1.4.7), and  HP Scan Pro Version 7.4.6
    Copyright © 1999 - 2007,
As  I recall I ran the scrubber as indicated here

I deleted all previous versions of the scanning software that came with my HP scanner 3970
Even though VueScan didn't solve the problems it may have something in it that helped.

By the way I had two different responses from HP technical telling me that my HP 3970 scanner would not work in lion. But I am happily still using my scanner in Lion!

  • HP Scanjet 3970 can't get to work in Leopard

The installer package simply unexpectedly quits. The old software which I had installed also does too. If I knew where all the dependent files were for it, maybe I could get the scanner software reinstalled since the uninstaller thinks the installation is too damaged for it to uninstall. Either that or is there someone who could help me set up the SANE drivers for it? Before anyone asks, no I'm not willing to use Vuescan.
    Thank you.

I'm in the same boat. I performed an Archive/install of Leopard. When I tried to use HP's software, it would scan, but would not save the image. I deleted all HP scanning software off my computer including preferences, downloaded the latest version of the software which covers up to 10.4. The installer hangs at step 8. HPs chat support was a joke. Told me they can't support macs via chat. Can't email their support because that's down. When I searched HPs site for my scanner, it couldn't find it. When I searched for it on Google, Google was able to find the HP page that referred to it.
I did manage to install the Window's drivers using Parallels, but the interface is just terrible. Hopefully HP has drivers soon. I would have thought since Apple worked so closely with them with software update in Leopard, that something like this wouldn't happen.

  • I can't install the down loaded drivers for a 3970

I have down loaded and unzipped the driver set for the 3970 scanner. I have it on disk, on a USP drive and on a CD (that I wrote from the unzipped files).  I have tryed 'setup' and 'install' programs.  They always hang with the complaint that they need the CD loaded.  The CD with the programs down loaded is not good enough.  Is there an ISO file I can down load and burn to get the correct CD?  Oh, my main XP drive is NOT c:. Is that the problem?  If so, what do I do next?

    Hello DaveNordlund,
To get your issue more exposure I would suggest posting it in the commercial forums since the HP Scanjet 3970 Scanner is a commercial product. You can do this at HP Enterprise Business Community.

  • Scanner 3970 and Yosemite

I'm using a MacBook Pro, and I have a Scanjet 3970 that is great.  But when I went to download Yosemite, Apple's new operating system, I got a message saying that the Power PC connection with my scanner will no longer work.  Is there a fix for that?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

In the past, Apple has to approve the driver for the scanner before the new operating system can interact.  It has been a problem for awhile whenever the OS is updated.  Wait until the driver is approved before installing the Yosemite upgrade.  If you upgrade before the driver gets approved, the scanner portion will not work.  I came across this several years ago, so it is not something new to Apple and the scanners.

Okay everyone I was able to resolve the issue with my scanner.
After posting here I recalled how my wireless mouse was acting up and the step I took to resolve that issue, so after uninstalling the hp software I went to the Library/Preference folder and removed all the hp scanjet plist and all the other related scanjet files.
I emptied the trash can and restarted my computer and then reinstalled the updated driver and "walaa" I was once again able to create magic.

My HP C4680 scanner/printer used to work with my Mac.  The printer still works fine, but after upgrading to Mac OS X 10.6.8 the scanner is no longer working.  I receive a message - scanner not found.  Anyone know how to fix this to make the compatible again?

  • Tiger hates SCSI?

I'm running a Minolta Dimage Scan Multi II, a film scanner, which is SCSI, and I run it off an Adaptec SCSI card in my Quicksilver G4.
The scanner always worked fine until I upgraded the OS from 10.3.9 to 10.4.9. After the upgrade, the scanner wouldn't work right anymore. When I tell it to scan, it hangs up, yet claims that it did scan, etc. etc; --in short, lots of errors, and no scanning.
I tried to fix things by installing a different SCSI card, which didn't work, then I tried all the old SCSI voodoo tricks, changing termination and SCSI ID numbers etc. etc. -- no go. I tried logging in from a different account--no change. The scanner just won't work under 10.4.9.
Then I booted into an external Firewire hard drive with 10.3.9 on it, and the scanner works fine again. Summary: the scanner works fine under 10.3.9. It won't work under 10.4.9.
So, I must conclude that something changed in the OS when Apple upgraded it, something that made it unfriendly to SCSI cards or devices.
Can anyone else confirm this? Is there any fix other than going back to an earlier version of OS-X?

I can find a slide scanner much cheaper today than I was able to 5 years ago. Even a simple HP Scanjet 3970 is only $100. A Microtek Scanmaker i800 is only $300. It used to be such scanners cost well over $1000. So your statement that Apple is making software that makes expensive scanners obsolete comes with a tradeoff of making cheaper scanners available that can do more for less. The current operating system is 10.4.10, and that has added functionality to include the iPhone. So the question is, are you looking more towards the future, or do you wish to sit behind in the past? Granted I'm not saying what they are doing is right or wrong. I'm just looking at it from an objective point of view. Sooner or later people are going to have to choose between sticking with the past as it still works, or moving to the future. You aren't forced to upgrade for any purpose. But having your cake and eat it too would require more testing than any one company has time to do. There are over 23,000 compatible Mac products on http://guide.apple.com/ Think Apple has 23,000 factorial seconds in the universe to test them all together in every possible combination? Look at a calculator, and you'll see that's well over the age of the universe.
No, you have to decide where you want to be within the realm of compatibility. Save up for the future if you need the future. Otherwise hold on to the past until you can save up for the future. That's the way the computer industry has always been.
The compatibility testing is going to have to come from the third parties you rely on. Apple just needs to make a stable enough platform for you to work on. If the third parties can't all be in sync, it is because the computer industry is a lot more complicated than you give it credit for.

  • Which scanner do You recommend for Lion?

my HP scanjet 3970 is signed by lion as a pc power programm that is no longer supported.

"my HP scanjet 3970 is signed by lion as a pc power programm that is no longer supported."
Perhaps the HP software is, however due check some of the thrid party software like VueScan and see if your scanner is supported. In any case I found success with Epson scanners.

  • Total Cost of Your Computing System?

This isn't an urgent question. I was just pondering some of items I plan on purchasing to use with my MacBook Pro and was interested in hearing others' ideas.
I spent about $3,000 on the top of the line MacBook Pro. Then I spent another $200 on accessories - an extra keyboard and mouse, carrying case and my first KVM switch and flash drive. (The KVM switch worked great at first, but the mouse suddenly stopped working, followed by the keyboard. And I've temporarily lost my flash drive - it's TOO small!)
I plan on spending another $550 on software, as follows:
    $100 Parallels
    $300 Windows XP
    $150 M$ Office for Mac
The weakest link is Dreamweaver. I have an older education version on my PC, so I can't upgrade across platforms, and I don't want to buy a new program until Adobe comes out with an upgrade for the new MacIntel computers. So I have to buy Parallels so I can install Windows XP, which I HOPE will allow me to use Dreamweaver on my MacBook Pro for the time being. I'm also addicted to Microsoft spreadsheets; as much as I hate Microshaft, I haven't found any better spreadsheets.
I may also spend about $250 or more on tech support. I contacted my local Geek Squad and learned that they'll probably charge $160 to install Parallels and Windows XP for me. (I'll see if I can do it myself first, but I'm leery of tampering with software that affects my hard drive.) I suspect it will cost me another $100 to hire someone to set up Apache, PHP, MySQL and phpMyAdmin for me.
So that's about $800 for software and installation fees.
I still don't understand wireless, but I'd like to find an Internet-connection plan that lets me keep my Dell PC online, so I guess I have to buy a router - about $50, I think. I suspect the wireless plan itself will cost $100 or more to set up.
I still need to purchase an Apple Care Plan before my initial one-year warranty expires. How much is that - $300?
Once I get everything figured out, I'll replace my extra keyboard and mouse with more advanced wireless models - about $100-$150 total?
I need a good flatbed scanner plus a second portable scanner with optical character recognition software that I can use to copy text from books in libraries, etc. I guesstimate the two scanners combined will probably cost somewhere around $400-$500.
Someday, I'd like to get a digital camera and a cell phone (never owned either).
When Adobe begins producing Macintel software, I'll buy the latest editions of Dreamweaver and Photoshop.
Finally, if I can ever afford it, I'd like to get a really big flat screen monitor. I currently have a 21" monitor that I use with my Dell PC. I can use it with my MacBook Pro, if I can get my KVM switch to work again.
That's a total of about $5,000, up to the digital camera, cell phone, MacIntel software and flat screen monitor.
Wow, I wish I was a sutdent again! I live in Seattle's University District, but I graduated from college years ago, so I can only drool at the student prices offered in the local UW Computer Store.
How much do others plan on spending on your MacBook-based systems?

You may be surprised to find many alternatives to Microsoft's software. My FAQ here should help:

BBEdit is a great webpage editor:
    http://www.barebones.com/
AppleCare can be found cheaply at http://www.macsolutions.com/
I found the HP Scanjet 3970 is only $99. Not sure if it works with a MacBook Pro, but you can check with HP. OCR from Readiris is getting good reviews:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/8605&mode=info
    And is $129.

  • Is app software for 10.2.8 usable with 10.5?

I'm now running OS 10.2.8 and thinking of buying a new Mac which would be loaded with 10.5 Leopard. Would my present application software be usable with 10.5, or would I have to replace all my apps software? Mainly I'm concerned about Entourage for e-mail, Microsoft Office word-processing, Epson Stylus C88 printer and Hewlett Packard Scanjet 3970 scanner. Thanks for info.

Chances are very slim that any of your apps would work since the new machines are all Intel based, so it's not just the change in OS, but the change in the actual hardware. The only apps that would run would have to be Universal Binary, and unless some of your apps are brand new, they would not run at all. Certainly you would have to buy the latest versions of MSOffice, etc.
As far as your hardware, it's unlikely that they would work properly, but they might. You would have to check with each of them to see if they have drivers for Leopard/Intel or if they are natively supported. Leopard supports many old printers, scanners, etc., but not all of them.
I would keep your present machine in case there are problems with your old hardware and Leopard/Intel.

  • Anyone have a good printer/scanner that they like?

Hoping to find one that is not too expensive. Please let me know if you are happy with yours. Also, if you found a bargain, please share where I can find it! Thanks

I'm pretty much anti-all in one units. They tend to be slower, and if one part breaks the entire unit has to be sent in for repair (don't put all your eggs in one basket). When any of these consumer electronics breaks, it costs more to repair than replace.
That said, I've had good luck with an HP Scanjet 3970 and a Epson R220 Photo printer. The advantage of the Epson which is also that of many more expensive Canon printers is that it uses multiple colored ink cartridges, meaning replacing the ink doesn't require buying a whole color cartridge at once that fills the need for all the ink cartridges. The costliest part of printers is the cost of ink, which usually mounts up to be more than the printer itself pretty quickly.
