Hp scanjet - freeze- only dvd reboot

When I flip the switch to start the scanjet 4850, the computer freezes. I thought that it was a software problem with a application that I had open, such as, Quark or Photoshop. Yesterday it froze the computer and I had quit all of the open applications, leaving only the operating system active. Also, the computer will not reboot, you have to startup with the Macintosh DVD in the drive to start the computer. And then restart the computer, which only works if you turn off the scanjet switch on the scanjet 4850.
Any suggestions as to what is happening or what to do, other that buy a different scanner that HP?
Thanks

Hi -- I was looking to see if someone else has had this problem.
I recently upgraded to 10.4.9, and since then I have found a problem with my HP Scanjet 4850 (which previously was working perfectly under 10.4.7). With the scanner connected via USB, if I turn on the scanner I get (sometimes, but not always - I've replicated it three times out of four) a complete freeze -- no mouse response, no keyboard response. The only way out of this is to just press and hold the powerbutton (all other key combinations do not work, even control + command + power button fails to work, I guess because the keyboard is just not working anymore). It seems to be switching on the HP scanner which does this.
I was using the HP Scanjet 4850 under 10.4.x-10.4.7 with no issues at all. I certainly had no problem turning it on (or off) whilst connected to a booted and logged-in G5. (This makes sense to me in terms of general Mac behaviour with peripherals, and since I only use the scanner occasionally it doesn't make sense to turn it on every time I want to boot up). So this is definitely a problem that is new since I upgraded to 10.4.9.
I thought it might be a problem with the upgrade itself, but I am now extremely careful (to the point of paranoia) when I do upgrades -- I download the combo, I run disk utility and Yasu beforehand, even run disk repair from the startup DVD, then boot in Safe mode before running the combo package. So I think this is an issue with 10.4.9 itself and its compatibility with the Scanjet 4850. The fact that others have found the same issue reassures me that it is perhaps 10.4.9 itself rather than my particular update procedure that is to blame.
The first time it happened, like you, I used the Tiger DVD to do a disk repair. The G5 is basically working OK now, but I will have to avoid using the scanner.
Weirdly, I have managed to turn on the scanner once (since this happened) without the freeze-up happening -- I have no idea why.
Maybe HP will update the software. So far it seems no updates are available.
If anyone else is having this problem and has any ideas, let us know!
Thanks.

  • Freezing within DVD playback

Having searched many forums for a solution to freezing on DVD playback (particularly with DVD players older than about 4 years) without success, I have isolated the issue to layer separation in Encore when building.
The solution I have discovered to get around this is
    1. Create your video in Premiere Pro as normal.
    2. Export to hard drive using Adobe Media Encoder and set Multiplex to DVD, Bitrate encoding to CBR for better final quality.
    3. Import into Encore and create menus etc normally.
    4. Build as a DVD Image to your hard drive with the following settings, irrespective of your file size, set size to 4.7GB, this turns off the Layer break options. Then set size to "Custom"  then set custom size to slightly larger than you file. Make sure "side" is set to 1.
    5. Press "Build". This will build an *.iso file to your hard drive without a layer break being inserted.
    6. Import this file into DVD Shrink and shrink back to your hard drive as an *.iso file to fit a single layer DVD.
    7. Double click this file to automatically open and burn a DVD using Nero. Make sure burn speed is 4x or less.
    Good luck

    Bill,
    Thanks for posting your solutions.
I've found that three factors affect DVD playback most, and in this order:
1.) choice of media - Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden are highly recommended. Falcon gets good reviews, but is/was only available in US. Have never used it.
2.) burn speed - slower is always better (as you point out). Luckily, Encore allows one to choose a slow burn speed, based on one's selection of media and also the capabilities of the burner. I always buy the slowest media, that Verbatim, or TY offer at the time. I want SLOW.
3.) keeping the bit-rate at about 7MB/s. This one gets debated a bit, and many have never had an issue at 8MB/s - YMMV
Now, my workflow is a tad different, as I always Export from PrPro as a DV-AVI Type II elemental stream (Video-only, no multiplexing obviously) and AC3 DD 5.1 SS Audio-only (or PCM/WAV 48KHz 16-bit, if I'm not doing 5.1 SS with the SurCode encoder). The DV-AVI is Imported into Encore as a Timeline, and the AC3 (or WAV) is Imported as an Asset. The Audio is dragged to the respective Timeline.
Unless I have some real need for bit-budgeting, I let Encore Transcode on Automatic. Even if one uses the above Assets and requires bit-budgeting, you can still set up the Transcoding manually, or can Export from PrPro as an MPEG-2 with the necessary settings. I strongly recommend not using any muxed files as Assets in Encore. Some will work, but many just flat fail.
So far, my method has yielded several hundred Projects with almost 2000 DVD's Burned. Not one has ever come back. Now, each Project gets checked with a DVD RW "test," and then the first DVD -R, or +R gets run through 5 different machines, plus the computer, before delivery, but still no returns, and some of my clients have some pretty old gear. For my testing, I use several brands of players and the models range from a pure esoteric down to a re-branded discount store cheapie. If it plays on all of these, I ship it out the door.
Appreciate the posting of your workflow,
    Hunt

  • 8800 GT freezes, only during Windows gaming

    Hi all!
Got my Mac Pro last week, added 8gb of OWC ram and 3x 750 F1s and yesterday a NEC 2470WNX. Could not be happier performance wise in OS X..
I have one problem though. I got the 8800 partially for some gaming performance asides from work, and have installed Medieval 2 Total War and Half-life 2 (on a windows physical disk, NTFS). In both games I get crictical freezes, solved only by reboot (hard or the machine actually restarts by itself sometimes, after a minute or two.)
    Details:
    - The mouse stops, but then gets moving again with everything else freezes. After a while, the mouse also stops
    - The sound shifts from headphones to onboard speaker, for no apparent reason
    - I had one pixelmayhem-crash, but besides from that the screen just freezes with no graphical errors.
    - I tried to lower several gfx details, just not the rez (I WANT to play native 1920*1200)
I installed the NVIDIA drivers, with no change. The system is 10.5.2 with gfx update.
    Thanks for any help!

    Hello.
I'm sorry you're having Windows/MacPro problems. I installed my XP Home on a different hard drive than my OS X drive with Bootcamp Assistant, and on the install of XP, I let it totally format the drive with NTFS. It took a while, being a 120gb hard drive. I then installed XP, inserted the OS X Leopard disk and installed all the XP drivers (32-bit), validated windows via internet, and upgraded XP fully with all the critical stuff.
    I installed:
    • Avast! Anti-virus (Free), let it update itself fully
    • CCLeaner (cleans, repairs & fixes registry, etc.)
    • Spybot Search & Destroy (Free), let it updated itself fully
    • PerfectDisk 8
    • City of Heros (let it update itself fully)
After all this was done, I ran PerfectDisk and optimized the hard drive, scanned for Viruses, Spyware, cleaned/fixed registry.
Back on the Mac Side of things, I used the WinClone application to make a backup of that Windows XP drive to an HFS+ drive (image) in case anything goes wrong..I'll be able to restore it fully.
So far, so good. No crashes, hangs or weirdness. It lets me play my game(s), and when I'm done, its back into OS X. If something gets wonky, I'll format the drive and restore it with the Winclone.
I <3 my Mac Pro running OS X and Windows XP (32-bit)! No other computer I've ever owned can even begin to come close to this near-perfect machine!
    -Mark
PS - If you don't want to use WinClone, and have another NTFS drive on your system, I'd highly recommend Acronis True Image Home for making a perfect image of your Windows Drive. If something goes wrong, you simply boot the machine off the True Image CD, and tell it where the saved image is, and it will format & restore your XP/Programs as good as new.

  • Help! When I go to backup my iTunes library it freezes my dvd drive!

I have (in the past) been able to backup my itunes library onto CDs. However, I went to backup today and it freezes my dvd drive. The first disk (CD-R) will burn, but then it won't eject after iTunes says to insert a new blank disc. I can't even access my dvd drive unless I restart my computer!
I have recently bought a bunch of stuff and I dont want to lose it.
    Any suggestions?

Once I had the project back from time machine, it worked fine (but like I said, I lost a little bit of work).

  • Sound/Mic Failure in Adobe Connect Solved Only by Reboot

    Hi...
    HP p6620F
    Windows 7
For my job, I must attend meetings in Adobe Connect using sound and mic. I'm using a Microsoft Lifechat headset/mic. My sound & mic began to fail & problem was resolved only by rebooting my computer. The fix would last a few hours at first, but began to last for only about an hour. I"m a work at home customer service agent, and I rely on my mic & sound. I'm having no problems at this point with sound when not working--such as listening to music or watching/hearing YouTube videos.
My supervisors insist that my soundcard needs replacing, but I don't have one; mine is integrated into the motherboard, apparently. I have a backup computer which I worked off of for 2 days with my current headset, and it worked fine. It's the family computer and I must get my work computer up to par.
How can I fix this without buying a new motherboard???
    Thanks in advance.

It is possible that you have switched the keyboard layout by accident.

  • PPro CC14 won't stop crashing and freezing only minutes after editing commences...

I seem to have tried everything to fix the issue but PPro CC14 won't stop crashing and freezing only minutes after editing commences. I am working on a Mac and have just updated to Mavericks as a final attempt to help solve the problem. I have tried calling Adobe but their phone support in Australia is shocking. I have resorted to posting here but haven't had any help yet. I really need to sort this issue out ASAP.

Its it possibly related to your graphics drivers?  Seems similar to something I was experiencing that was resolved by updating my nvida cuda drivers (see thread link).  I also started running activity monitor to keep track of the memory and processor use.  That said after solving the problem by updating my drivers and switching to the CUDA acceleration, on occasion I get into ruts where it opens and freezes all the time.  It does seem helpful to try and reduce project size if possible - I normal keep a track record of sequence revisions and such, but when possible it seems that clearing out as much as possible by deleting or project managing into a new project can help things run better.

  • Macbook pro early 2008 freezing only in OSX

    Hi everyone,
My macbook pro early 2008 (last model before the unibodies), 2.4 Ghz, 4Gb, 8600GT freezes only in OSX.
I'm typing this message right now on the same computer, but on windows 7, bootcamp.
Whenever I boot up OSX the system freezes every few seconds for a minute, only to resume work a few seconds before freezing again.
I know it isn´t a harware fault, since I can still boot up in windows 7 and use the snow leopard CD, which brings me to the next point.
I´ve allready used the disk verifty (which pointed out errors) and the disk repair (which was succesful).
I´ve also verified permissions and repaired them successfully.
What I´ve also done is turn off the sudden motion sensor.
The last thing I´ve tried is running the software update, making sure the system is up to date.
The battery is a few months old (new one) and the power cable works as well.
All of which did not work. I really don´t want to do a complete disk wipe since the backing up is horrendous.
I´ve read a lot on the subject, but since I don´t use an external monitor or have the unibody one the supposed solutions do not apply to me.
    Thanks for you help!

    Please help me out!
You have already tried the "standard" troubleshooting solutions.  Most times an issue cannot be diagnosed unless the computer is physically examined by a repair tech.
How large is your hard drive and how much hard drive space do you have left?  Not enough space can cause the issues you are having as well as a failing hard drive -
Common symptoms of a dying hard drive are the following:
Hard drive is making a clicking, whirring, grinding, ping pong ball noise or any other type of unusual noises.
    Hard drive is not spinning.
Computer is not recognizing the hard drive.
    Sluggish loading of applications.
    System freezes and hangs.
If you have Apple Care, give them a call.  Otherwise, take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP for a proper diagnoses.

    Hi,
This issue has just started happening. Everytime I put a dvd into my combo drive it makes my mac crash. DVD player starts to open and then it hangs and I have to manually shut the computer down. I tried using frontrow instead but this was no better. I dont think its a mechanical issue because other cd's work fine, i think it is only DVDs.
Has anyone else had this issue or can anyone at least point me in the right direction on how to fix it?! It is frustrating because I really like the DVD aspect of the mac!
