Hp Simple Save 500gb Drive Not Recognized

Hello! I own the HP Simple Save 500gb external hard drive. I mainly used it on my dell computer, which ran Windows 7. Out of no where it stopped recognizing it all together. I got a new laptop after a year or so, and suprise cant get it to recognize on windows 8 either. Normal I would look into reformatting it etc, however, my brothers wedding photos are on it. I would like to figure out how to be able to access this drive again, on either laptop..I still have both, but would prefer the windows 8 one.  Please get back to me as soon as possible!

Ashley,
Sorry to hear this. I am a little confused about your time frame here.
It worked on the Dell until a year ago so you bought a windows 8 computer and it worked on that until just recently?
Or it never has been recognized on the Windows 8 computer?
And when you say "not recognized", you cannot see it at all in Disk Management? is this correct?

  • HP Simple Save external drive

Hi, we have an HP Simple Save external drive. At the begining it worked fine then we had problems to open it as it took quite a while for it to appear on the finder, but eventually it show and we were able to keep using it for back up. However now we are trying to access our info and we just can find it on the finder, besides the annoying launcher icon. Can someone please help me access my info through any other way? should I try this on a Microsoft desktop?

Are you using HP's software to back up? If so, see what instructions/help/support/forms they have. You're not likely to find folks here that know much, if anything, about HP's software.
If you're using Time Machine to back up, try repairing the backups, per #A5 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).

hard drive not recognized during windows server 2008 setup

    Hi,
Whether the hard disk is recognized in BIOS?
Connect it to another computer to see if it could be recognzied incase the cause is the disk itself. Also please check if it is really a RAID instead of a single hard disk - a single disk should be recognized directly while RAID cannot be recognized until
    a suitable driver is installed.

Apple has release a new version of iTunes 8, in responce the issues with Vista.
    1.Unistall iTunes via StartMenu\Control Panel\Programs and Features
    2.Delete all previous iTunes installers.
3.Download iTunes 8 from the Apple website.
4.Makes sure you close Outlook and Explorer and all non-essential programs, as it seems to prevent the install at certain points.
    5.Install iTunes 8.
6.After the Install is complete, Open iTunes 8 before attaching your iPhone.
7.Unlock your iPhone if it is lock with a pass code.
8.Attach your iPhone, after a few seconds you should see that it has installed a driver for your iphone, then the iPhone will appear in iTunes.
I hope this helps, as I did spend some time with this issue myself.

  • My dvd drive not recognized in device manager, getting the yellow explanation mark.

my dvd drive not recognized in device manager, getting the yellow explanation mark. Tried uninstallingdevice drive and scanning for new hardware. scanned for updates, etc. I getting no results. The laptop is a Pavilion DV5. Thanks

    Hi,
It could be that the drive has a Hardware issue, but try the following.
From the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.
Next, open Device Manager, right click the DVD drive and select Uninstall.  When this has completed, restart the notebook and let Windows rediscover the device and check.

  • Drive not recognized - new issue...help please

I am replacing a 120 GB drive with a 250 GB one to give more space for video files. On reboot, I get the message: You have inserted a drive not recognized...etc...with the choices to initialize, ignore or eject.
Then I notice that the drive on the same bus (in the bottom of the tray) is not seen on the desktop. It was in two volume partitions and was also a 250GB. Big mystery. So I remove the new one and connect just the older drive. No luck, message says ...a drive not recognized...etc. So then I change the jumpers twice - same results - and I remove the jumper...same thing. I see this drive in Disk Utility represented by a number and size (232 GB) but not by the volume names. And when I try to verify or repair, the option is greyed out (yes, I booted to the install disc and went to Disk Utility, as per instructions.
This disk has data on it I need, and it's not backed up. All I did was unplug the connectors and then replaced them as before. So please, tell me how I can restore this one. I could remove it and put it in an external FW enclosure and then see if it shows up, but I don't want to take chances. Worse case scenario is a data retrieval service - and I'm almost certain I shouldn't have to do that as this is a healthy drive.
Any suggestions very gratefully appreciated, thanks!
    Keith

Tom, I tried every one of your suggestions: set the older drive (Seagate) at P4 and first connector on IDE ribbon to cable select and the new drive (Hitachi) in tray just above it at P5 - end connector on ribbon also to cable select. Result: two dialog boxes for both drive on reboot "You have inserted a device not recognized..."
Then I tried slave on the Seagate and Master on the Hitachi...same result as above.
Then I tried alternate Master and Cable Select configs. on the Hitachi for 15 or 16 pin..whatever that is...but was printed on strip on drive. No go.
I think it must be another issue here than jumpers...although that may have something to do with it. When I installed a new drive in my Quicksilver I never got the Device Not Recognized dialog...it either saw the drive with all data on it or it didn't, until I set the jumpers correctly, as directed for that incident.
What bothers me is that when I removed the new Hitachi entirely and reconnected the old Seagate as the only drive on that cable, either with jumper set to CS or M or S I am still getting the dialog.
    Any other solutions, please.

  • USB flash drive not recognized on desktop or disk utility

I see a number of similar threads to this but nothing solves this problem.  Any help will be greatly appreciated as I am about to go crazy!
I have 3 USB thumb drives that all worked 2 days ago - now only one does.  I have tried all drives in multiple ports and the same result.  I have restarted the iMac (2009 Yosemite) a number of times and the same result.
This came about attempting to create bootable USBs with each of these.  I was struggling with the process on my mac so took 2 (brand new 16GB PNYs) to a PC created the live boot USBs and they booted fine on the PC (knowing this wouldn't boot my mac).  I did however plug them into my mac and they were recognized.  I finally found success creating a Ubuntu live boot with my old USB.  With that success I wanted to try with one of the new USBs on the mac.
    Here is what I did:
    1. Using Disk Utility - Reformatted the drive 1 partition MS Dos FAT 32
    2. In Terminal unmounted the drive and ran a dd command to copy the linux .img file successfully
    3. Box came up saying drive not recognized and selected to ignore (this happened on my old one that still works also)
    4. Ejected drive from terminal
5  Restarted mac and attempted to boot from USB without success.
After this the 2 new USBs were no longer recognized in any usb port while the other still is.  They do not show on the desktop nor in Disk Utility.  I checked them on the PC and they are still both recognized and showing the FAT 32 format.
    Help please!

Thank you for the reply.  I found some time to go through this process a number of times without success
    Any other suggestions?

  • HT5639 after The Boot Camp for Windows 8? DVD Drive Not Recognized or Reading CD/DVD

after i made The Boot Camp Setup  for running Microsoft Windows 8? DVD Drive Not Recognized or Reading CD/DVD

    thanks for the response
    1. Yeah I thought that's a mandatory thing because i need to be able to control the brightness with my keyboard, updated graphics card, boot camp control panel, etc
    2. No there's no enable for this because Windows 8 recognizes it as a "disconnected device" and asks me to reconnect the dvd drive to the machine (which it obviously already is).
    3. Ive tried those before, also even editing the registry but it didnt work.
It's weird because it never happened before on Snow Leopard » Lion bootcamp driver updates. Just in Mountain Lion

  • HP Simple Save external hard drive not recognized on laptop.

I have tried plugging it into different USB ports on same laptop or a completely different desktop.  It is never recognized.  last week it was.  I took it apart & tried it in a 3.5 SATA external closure.  Still is not recognized.  I have info on it that i desperately need.  Is there any way for me to get my files off of it?

Welcome to the HP Community Forum.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news; this vintage drive might have died.
If you are lucky, it is only the power supply, although this is a thin hope and is not based at all on the facts.
Depending on your level of desperation, you might consider taking the drive to a forensic specialist.
My own Simple Save drive died suddenly one day about five months ago after several years of good service.  Fortunately, I never depend on only one device for backups, else they are not backups, but instead become single points of certain failure.
I hope you find a viable solution.

  • My Canvio 500gb external hard drive not recognized on my Toshiba Laptop

Seems a bit ironic that it won't work on my Toshiba laptop (runnng both windows 7 64 bit and 32 bit) but the drivers fail when attempting to install.
Drive works fine on my old custom desktop running Vista-32 bit.
To make matters worse the Model number of my Canvio (HDTC605XK3A1) isn't showing up under product support.
Please help. This is rather unforgivable.

    Jerry,
I am experiencing the same problems with the Canvio 500GB drive I purchased today, and have read many posts about these poorly supported devices. After reading your reply I felt obligated to point out just how unhelpful it was. The issue is that it is not reconised as a USB device correctly in Windows, which is required BEFORE it would ever show up in disk management. Pretty obvious really. Second, your link was to a product specification and purchase page and has nothing close to support information. Again, pretty obvious. It seems like you did not understand the original poster's post and gave generic, unrelated information in your reply.
This Toshiba Canvio product has NO support page online from Toshiba. It is obviously riddled with problems of power usage and Windows 7 incompatibility to which Toshiba have offerred no solution either. How I wish I had read the reviews earlier instead of trusting the Toshiba brand as I have been able to in the past.
Technical forums are already full of enough useless misdirection. We don't need any more.

  • New Toshiba 3tb external drive not recognized at startup WIn 7

My new toshiba 3tb external drive (with wall wart power) is not recognized at start up (Win7). The message I get is that it is a USB storage device but can not be used until it is formatted (I already moved files to it). If I plug it in after start up it's fine and shows up as a toshiba storage device. I've used the 2.0 and 3.0 ports and it is the same problem (it has wall wart power). I have never encountered this problem with any other usb storage device  (an iomega 1tb and a WD 500gb) always plugged in and recognized at start up.
    Thoughts?

Please provide your complete model number of your system.
By doing so, we will be in a better position to provide you assistance.

  • WD external drive not recognized with 10.7.5 update

I've got a Western Digital external drive that was working just fine an hour ago, then I installed the 10.7.5 update and now my Mac Pro is saying that it's not recognized by the computer and asking if I want to initialize it. I went to Disk Utility and the drive itself shows up but no disc image. It's connected via a RocketU USB 3.0 dual hub, which has also worked fine and aparently still is (it's recognized in my system report). I updated my drivers for the USB 3.0 hub anyways but still no disc being recognized.
It's not a complete disaster because this is a backup disc, but I'd love to avoid having to back up all that data again (about a terabyte, which happens to be all my work files and iTunes files - it's a LOT of stuff). I also wanted to post in case this is some kind of issue with this current update, but I digress.
This is what my disc utility currently looks like:
The destination and source can't be the same (as is pictured) when doing a Restore, right? That accomplishes nothing but a blank drive, I'm guessing.
I also have Drive Genius 3 and tried to "scan" the drive several times, all of them producing failure to scan results. I could try a bench test on the drive, but as I've already stated, it was working fine an hour ago. I'm pretty sure it's the update, not the drive.
So is there any way for me to save the information that's currently on there or do I have to bite the bullet and re-backup all that data?
Thanks for any help here. Every time I think I know what I'm doing on the mac I get something stupid like this that I should know but don't.  :-)

Wow, no help at all. Thanks, Apple!! Another stellar performance. That's the last time I ever install an update as it comes up.

  • External hard drive not recognized... help please.

okay, well here is the story:
my iBook G4 had its stock 30gb hard drive in it and it was running extremely low on space. so i figured i didn't want to carry around an external hard drive, therefore i would buy an internal hard drive an install it. so i purchased a new 2.5" 80gb hard drive and called up the local apple store. they told me that although it was under warranty, that it did not cover hard drive installation. so i looked it up online and found step by step instructions to install the hard drive. so after lots of hard work and many screws, i installed the new hard drive successfully... but i still had this perfect 30gb hard drive. i thought maybe to save a few bucks i could turn it into a usb external hard drive. i found an enclosure for the hard drive and a usb 2.0 cable and plugged it into my ibook. it was recognized and everything. i put some files on the external hard drive and transferred it to another mac. this is where the trouble started. i plugged the hard drive into a PowerMac G4, and it was not recognized... so i tried it on a different mac. this time on a PowerBook G4, but no luck. this issue has been troubling me for a few weeks. but then i tried it on a similar iBook G4... and it was recognized. but i don't know why it was only recognized only on the iBook G4 (not the same iBook G4 it was pulled out of) and no other macs.
does anybody have any ideas what we can do to get this hard drive to be recognized by other macs?
any of even the smallest ideas would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks,
    tyler
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I can walk you through formatting the hard drive:
    1. Hook it up to an iBook that recognizes it.
    2. Go into your Applications folder, then scroll down to Utilities. Open Utilities and scroll down a bit and you should see Disk Utility. Double-click.
    3. On the left side you should see your internal hard drive and your external one. Each hard drive will have a sub-catagory with the partition indented.
    4. Your external hard drive will probably be the second catagory. Click it.
    5. In the center-top you should see the tabs First Aid, Erase, Partition, RAID, and Restore. Click the Erase tab.
    6. You should see Volume Format: and then a drop down menu, and Name: and a text box. Type in the name you want the external hard drive to be named.
    7. In the drop down menu, select Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    8. Then, simply click Erase, watch the progress and it should be good to go!!
Hope I helped you out. Oh, and it might be the enclosure...and also what OS's? Since it's USB it is probably using a USB Mass Storage driver. Mac-wise, if formatting doesn't help, I would get a FireWire enclosure because FireWire is much faster than just USB 2.0. Oh, thats nother thing...Is the enclosure Hi-Speed USB? If it isn't, I would definitely get a FireWire one...If it is, the PowerMac G4 doesn't have Hi-Speed so you're not taking full advantage..Just some insight
