HP StoreEver LTO-2 Ultrium 448 SCSI Internal Tape Drive

I work for a small christain school and we moving into the modern age at the pace we can afford. I have built a small print and file server for our school. I had donated a pair of nice LTO-2 Ultrium 448 SCSI Internal Tape Drives. I installed one and got drives to auto load. But am in need of a recomendation for the best backup software. I am running windows 2008 R2 standard. 16gb of ram and 2.5 tb of storage space. Wanting to do tape backups of some important school files.
Help please

In RAC, Please note that you can take backup from any node and you can able to restore from any node.
If you taking backup to disk then you must mount the same backup mount on both servers in order to able to backup and restore.
In your case you are taking backup to FRA and from there taking to tape.
The TSM wtih tdop agent is congiured on Node1 and not on Node 2 thats why you are not able to restore from node2.

Internal Tape Drive

We have Internal Tape Drive attached with our AIX box.

Currently we are doing disk backup as below:
here is the script to perform backup:

Do you have a media manager software (such as TSM) to enable backups directly from RMAN to tape? I thought I remembered something about 10.x having a default media manager, besides Secure Backup, but that seems far fetched right now.
Without a media manager, you could
- backup to disk with rman, identifying the backup set files somehow
- then write those files to tape
So below the rman part in your script, you use AIX commands to write files to tape.

Xserve and HP StorageWorks Ultrium 1840 SCSI

I'm planning on buying a new Xserve (and an Xserve RAID) and using the relatively new HP StorageWorks Ultrium 1840 SCSI (external tape drive) to do backups. The specs are over here:

I just called EMC Insignia (was Dantz) and they say it's compatible with Retrospect for Macintosh Workgroup Edition. Now I'm a little confused at which Xserve BTO options to choose.
Is it correct that I will need to select these options?
Slot 1: Dual-Channel U320 SCSI-Card with PCI-X-Riser
Slot 2: Dual-Channel 4 GBit Fibre Channel-PCI-Express-Card
If I understand correctly I need the U320 card to connect the Ultrium and the Dual Fibre Channel to connect ONE Xserve RAID, am I correct?

Yes, you have the right combination of cards there.
However, please rethink your choice of software.
There are numerous horror stories on these boards and others related to Retrospect in a Server environment. For some reason it just does not work, causing instability, hangs, poor performance and system crashes.
There are better alternatives including NetVault, BRU and Time Navigator, amongst others.

Time Machine ejecting internal hard drive during backup

I originally posted this in the Time Machine group. It was suggested I post to the Xserve group.
We have an XSERVE running 10.6.4 server. It has 2 internal 1TB drives. The plan is to use one as the main drive and the second as a Time Machine backup. This used to work in 10.5, but since about 10.6.2 or so, it has not worked correctly.
Time machine will come on, begin the backup, and then error off with a message that the drive has been ejected. I have erased the drive, but still no joy. I have partitioned the drive, still no joy. I have verified the drive repeatedly, and all is fine. I can copy files to and from the drive until the cows come home, and all works fine, which means I do not think it is the drive itself. Activate TM, however, and it will fail before the first backup is completed. The only way to get the drive back is to do a complete power down and then power up. Needless to say, that is not a good thing for a server that we rely on.
Any ideas?

No, it is not always at the same point/file/bytes transferred. It will vary from a few GB (say 3GB) to quite a few GB (say 30GB). I would add amongst the things I have done was to:
Perform numerous Disk Utility Checks. Never any errors found.
Erased the backup drive on multiple occasions. Double checked the GUID and format.
Partitioned the drive and tried backing up to a new partition. (No joy there either)
Copied lots and lots of data from the root disk to said partitions to test them. All went fine.
It really is Time Machine that is causing the issue. I can use the drive all day long as long as TM does not run. When it does, I eventually get a failure message that the drive has been ejected.
While I have not tried making a partition on the home drive (I'd rather not, lots of data there, make users mad, and since TM is not working, I have no backups at present), I do limit the data that is being backed up to JUST that of the system. /Users is being excluded at the moment. So I doubt there is anything out of the ordinary in the system. And, yes, I did a disk check on the root disk and all is fine there too.

I don't think the test-scsi command is viable for that platform.
The FC disks are "viewed" by the system as external to the SCSI controller, almost as if they were in a multi-pack.
They are FC drives addressed by the chipset as SCSI disks.
Try:

Older releases that might be fine for V480's won't work on V490's.

Time Capsule vs. 2nd internal hard drive

I have the equipment below but with only one internal hard drive. Recently my system crashed trying to upgrade TechTool (now in the landfill). Pictures and music gone. Backup! What's that? Actually they warned me but have used it for years without problems.
Now to get to my question. I have Time Capsule software (Leopard) but it sounds cheaper and easier just to slip in a 2nd hard drive and use that for backup. Is that crazy or do able? The drive I have in there is a Maxtor 6Y250M0 I think it's a 250GB. I have 164GB available but still don't have half my music and pictures on it. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I also have a Linksys router but my wife uses it for work and I'd be DOA if I screwed that up.

Actually, with the right software, you can. There are plenty of data recovery programs out there: Data Rescue II, Norton Utilities, and Toast Titanium, just to name a few.
Even after wiping a drive, you may still be able to recover a lot of data using a good data recovery program.
A question I do have is, I'm seeing SATA I/II. Does that just mean single and dual processors?
No. SATA is what connects your internal drives. You can think of it like a modern version of SCSI, in a way.

Internal Zip Drive and Internal DVD Burner Question:

Where can I find an internal Zip drive for my b&w g3 desktop?
Or should I just get an external USB or 1394 Zip drive?
+(I have a 20gb hard drive that doesn't have its computer anymore and I connected it to a Gateway 2000 and the hard drive has Windows 98 SE with lots of files...jpegs for example...and I am going to get the files off of the hard drive before I erase it and put it on another desktop. I have a DVD Rom in the apple desktop. I also want to upgrade it to a DVD Burner / DVD+R/RW or whatever it is called. Is that possible?

I have a B&W G3/400 purchased in '96 which I've upgraded with the PowerLogix 1.1 GHz Zif Upgrade. When Apple introduced OSX I also installed and ATA hard drive, and a few years ago I replaced the original Apple CD ROM with a Pioneer DV D-RW DVR-111D (which surprisingly burns DVD's faster than my new iMac 2.8GHz Intel Core2 Duo). The Pioneer DVD burner works like a charm. There were no issues at all when it came to the instyallation: rebooting, reading installation CD's or what have you. It was true, PLUG & PLAY.
The G3 is currently running:
1) OSX 10.4.11, on an ATA drive (Maxtor 6L100PO; 93.37GB) &
2) MAC OS 9.2.2 on the original equipment 9GB SCSI Drive
The G3 cannot take advantage of the ZIF processor upgrade in OSX 10.4.11, and I am in the process of downgrading OSX to 10.4.9 so that I can take advantage of the faster processor. According to PowerLogix the ZIF upgrade is not compatible with a later version of OSX after 10.4.9 as they have been unable to keep up with the changes Apple has been making in the OS.

Internal ZIP drive to external?

I have a B&W G3 that came with an internal 100 MB ZIP drive. Can I remove it and use it as a stand alone external drive and if so, what other parts would I need?

It would probably be more trouble and expense than it's worth. The internal Zip drive is an ATAPI device with a 40-pin connection, so you'd need an external case for removable media devices (like a 5.25" optical drive), because the Zip drive's faceplate must be exposed for inserting/removing disks. You'd also need the 5.25" to 3.5" reducing sled with faceplate for the case, which shipped with Iomega retail boxed internal Zip drives, for installing in an empty 5.25" expansion bay. As for the choice of external case connectivity, it would either be FireWire or USB, but if the bridge chip used in the external case doesn't recognize the Zip drive, then it's a lost cause. I attempted to convert an internal ATAPI Zip drive for external use, by installing it in an external USB 1.1 CD-RW's case. Once connected, I got several different error messages identifying "missing" software, which really pertained to the programming of the bridge chip itself. It had nothing to do with Iomega's USB driver, because that driver was already installed in the Extensions folder. The Zip drive is both a mass storage device and removable media device, so you'd want to check the manufacturer's specs for the external case, to be sure that it would be supported. Converting an internal SCSI Zip drive for external use in a SCSI case is a straightforward swap with no problems, but that's not the case with an ATAPI Zip drive. As I wrote at the outset, it may not be worth attempting the conversion, especially since you can find used, external Iomega USB Zip 100 drives for very little now. The first generation of USB Zip drives had an external 5-volt power supply, but the newer ones are smaller, bus-powered devices. The low cost and convenience of using USB flash drives has made the more expensive Zip disks less popular for backup usage now.

Are you referring to Windows Server 2012 or Hyper-V 2012? Big difference.
With Hyper-V 2012, you only have the Hyper-V role, no other roles. With Windows Server 2012 you should be able to do it, if the HP drivers allow you to install without a GUI, or you may want to install the tape drivers with the GUI and then remove the GUI
to go back to a "core" install.
You cannot connect or pass-through a tape drive to a Hyper-V VM, regardless of the host.

Getting data off of internal hard drive

my G4 tower is not responding. Rather than try and fix it, all I really need is the data on the two internal hard drives. How do I do this?
Is there a way to remove the internal hard drives, connect with a SCSI (and a power supply?) to my G4 laptop?

Remove the hard drive, connect the widget, and plug into another computer's USB port. Then you can move stuff to that computer or the external drive attached to computer #2. The adaptor requires no enclosure. I use one and place the bare drive on a clean newspaper or magazine to prevent shorting any of the open connection on the bottom of the drive.

How to move an iTunes library from the internal hard drive to another bootable disk.

         I got two Mac OS X installations on my i Mac system. One on the internal hard drive (320 Gb), that has been there since the iMac was bought 3 years ago, upgraded to Lion on 2 August. (call that INT) . I have a USB external drive, and recently bought a firewire Lacie external drive (2Tb), so to boot from there when I can, with hard drive space getting tight this year. I successfully installed another copy of Lion on LACIE.
         Then I went to work to transfer my iTunes library, which the media files were optioned to store on the USB drive. Intending to transfer both the music and video files, and the megadata ( playlists, ratings, playcounts ) I found the media files and the iTunes library file and the .xml document in my iTunes folder from INT. I made a new folder in the USB drive, and copied the contents from the old iTunes folder to that new folder. I re-started in LACIE, and found my empty iTunes folder. I copied over to the new iTunes folder, then opened iTunes. My eyes saw the music library to the same number of items, with the playlists etc showing.
        However, I tried to sync an iPod Nano, and a window came up saying 100 songs could not be copied to the iPod because they could not be found. After ejecting the iPod I tried to play a song from iTunes, and the screen filled with exclamation points. A small window came up, asking for a password to open "sparsebundle" and my name. I entered my password for the administrator's log-in and it said try again with the password. Without knowing what password to put in, I clicked Cancel, and got another small window asking to locate the file. Then clicked Cancel again, not knowing where to search. All the media folders were showing after quitting iTunes and opening Finder .
      I re-booted into INT, and opened iTunes. The library was still there. I synced my iPod again, ejected it, played 3 songs on the iPod, synced again, ejected it again, and opened the playlist "Recently Played". It showed up okay with no problems. So my iTunes library in INT is alright.
      Has anyone got any idea how to make the transfer into LACIE and get it running alright, or what went wrong with what I did ?
      In the meantime I will empty my LACIE iTunes library folder's contents to the trash, and securily empty the trash .

Solved the issue without using the trash . I tried to consolidate the library in LACIE, then clicked on any exclamation-mark song and tried to locate the file. Repeating those steps 3 or 4 times cleared it up. That was confirmed when I synced the entire library on a iPod Classic, and showed up no problems after syncing the Nano.
     What went wrong was perhaps to fail to consolidate the library at first .

I'm running Final Cut Express 2. How can I move entire project and application from one internal hard drive to another? Ran out of space on one drive. Thanks.

I'm running Final Cut Express 2. My video project is 95% done and I've run out of space on my 500g internal hard drive. How can I (1) move the complete FCE program and video to my unused 250g internal hard drive and operate it from there and (2) how do I then purge all the FCE info from the 500g drive without losing anything from the 250 drive?
Also, is it possible to change the aspect ratio from 4:3 to 16:9 when the project is finished? If so, how? I now know this all should have been done before I started. Thanks for the help.

1. You can't move the application. It must remain on the system drive. Move your capture scratch folder to the external FireWire drive and use the reconnect function in the project.
2. What's the media 16:9 or 4:3?
