HP SureStore App Fails From J: Drive Letter Missing

No Help in Desktop Hrdware:
Win 7 Hm Prem --- I "Believe " my HP Pocket Media BkUp Drive Software is failing to work NOW because the Removable Disk "Drive Letter" (J) it was ALWAYS assigned has Disappeared.
With a Temp removal of my HP PD3200X (BkUp) Drive a Verbatim USB was inserted and Assigned the SAME (J).
I REMOVED it with Safely Remove Hardware INSTEAD of the USUAL Clk'ing of the V-Safe 100 ICON that always Released the USB. I am suspicious that is WHY (J) is MISSING and the HP Drive is NOW assigned (K).
Computer / Rt Clk (J) and then EJECT produces Msg That "(J) is CURRENTLY IN USE. Save Files & then Exit. Clk Continue may cause loss of data."
NEITHER diskmgmt.msc or a Nirsoft utilitiy App "USBDeview" show (J) is In Use.
(J) appears everyehere it should EXCEPT in the Change Drive Letter Menu (J Missing) ......
The SureStore Sync Shtcut disappeared when I Unpinned it from task Mgr but Clking on it B4 that produced "please Insert Disk into Removable Disk (J). The Driver doesn't "Appear" to Load now when Drive 1st Inserted.
I Dnloaded the LATEST SureStore App Update (4-8-2010) and AFTER 3 Install attempts It Actually WORKED. Upon Re-Boot Nothing appears to load / No Icon appears to Clk / Activate and (I THINK) it's looking for (J) for some reason. I have to RE-Install the Update Each Time I want to do a C: Update Sync to the HP Drive (now K.
FIXIT and Control Panel Troubleshooting / Hardware & Sound = No Help.
Will appreciate  Any assistance !!!
This question was solved.
View Solution.

I recovered J: by Removing the HP BkUp Drive & going to Device Mgr / Disk Drives and Uninstalling All 5 USB Device Members. Plugged in Drive and it was Assigned (K. Did Change Drive Letter routine and (J was NOW AVAILABLE again. I made the change to J:.
My biggest Problem was Not Knowing that after the 4-8-10 SureStore App Ver 1.0.1.15 Update Install I should have gone to Start/ Computer, and made a Desktop Shortcut for HPSureStore.exe visible there. All has worked since so J: probbly could have remained lost IF I had known how to setup the Shortcut. I was going to Appdata and finding (3) SureStore.exe's that didn't do anything.
All is well.  FYI.

  • PSE7 Restore to different PC fails to update drive letter in catalog

I'm trying to simply copy my catalog and photos from my desktop to my laptop to have with me when I'm away. From all the discussions it seemed like backup/restore was the best method in order to preserve all the tags and other data associated with the images.
    Source Drive:
Volume in drive H: is Data
    Volume Serial Number is 30AF-58D3
    Catalog: RH Main
    Picture Folder: h:\My Documents\My Pictures
    Catalog Folder: h:\My Documents\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\RH Main
    Backup Destination:
Volume in drive M is OneTouch4 1-TB Serial number is e79a:bf54
Now on the laptop I run the restore and choose 'Hard drive/Other Volume' and locate the Tally file on drive X: which is mapped to drive M on my desktop. It was simpler to restore across the network rather than moving drive M to the laptop.
Under 'Restore Files and Catalogs to' I choose 'New Location', specify D:\, and check 'Restore Original Folder Structure'.
    On the laptop:
Volume in drive D: is Apps_Data
    Volume Serial Number is 3069-7A44
After the restore is complete, all of my photos are exactly where I expect them, D:\My Documents\My Pictures. The catalog is in D:\Catalog.
The problem is that there are no thumbnails displayed for any of the photos. Examining the properties of each reveals that they are presumed to be on drive H: - their original location on my desktop.
I could have easily copied the files myself, but I was counting on restore to do what I could not easily do - which was to update the database to reflect the correct location of the restored files. After all, restore PUT them there. Something must have convinced it that the drive letter containing the restored photos was still H:, but I'm at a loss as to how it could have come to that conclusion.
Am I missing a step or am I expecting too much from backup/restore?

The only drive visible to the laptop is X: which is mapped to M: on the desktop - the destination for the backup. The drive containing the original images on the desktop is H:.
Automatically search and reconnect is checked.
Update thumbnail doesn't work. Here's what's funny. Take a single example, a file named DSC_0005.JPG. I choose update and it starts scanning on D: and I can see it run through My Documents, My Pictures, and all of its subfolders. It turns out there are no less than 10 occurrences of that file name under My Pictures - each of them in a different sub-folder of course. So I let Update Thumbnail run and ended up at the reconnect screen where I can go find it manually. Why it didn't find any of those 10 files is a mystery. So I reconnected manually by browsing to the correct DSC_0005.JPG file - formerly at H:\My Documents\My Pictures\2009 01 01 but now on D: at the same path.
Next I choose the thumbnail adjacent to it on the screen, DSC_0006.JPG. I check the rmf.3.cache file and the only entry in it is the folder that I just matched DSC_0005.JPG from - which is the same folder that contains DSC_0006.JPG. The process again runs for quite some time searching C: & D: for DSC_0006.JPG. Once again I'm presented with the Reconnect Missing Files dialog with no file suggested on the right side. So even with an entry in the cache pointing to D:\My Documents\My Pictures\2009 01 01, a folder containing a file named DSC_0006.JPG, it could not find a match!
Back in PSE5 I had performed this reconnect on one file and then again on the rest as described on your web page and it worked as you described. So I'm familiar with that process but have not needed it lately, until now.
The backup/restore functionality is so basic that I'm sure they tested it to some degree and it must work for some, otherwise many others would likely be griping. So there must be something unique to my setup that it's unable to come to grips with. Surely their internal testing of the restore feature included a test to restore to a different drive.
Maybe they made the restore too smart. It certainly restores the file to the correct location based on the options I selected and the file retains its original name - but the database thinks it hasn't moved from the original location.

  • CD-ROM drive letter changed to the next available letter after an issue with the Storage appliance.

    Server platform:Windows server 2008 R2 Enterprise.
Last time we experienced an issue with the storage device we are using to  attach a disk to our server 2008 (virtual). This storage device is also providing storage to the ESX where the server 2008 is hosted.
The drive configuration in the server was:
    System C:\
    Tools D:\
    Apps E:\
    CD-ROM F:\
Some hours after the storage appliance issue, we realized the Application on the server was not working and then we restarted the server. After restarting the server we went to the file explorer and realized that the Apps volume had the drive letter F and
the CD-ROM had the E letter assigned.
I assume windows lost the Apps disk due to the SAN disconnection. Maybe the CD-ROM was also disconnected and when the Storage appliance was connected again the CD-ROM acquire the next drive letter it found, which was the letter E:. Then the Apps disk was
also discovered by Windows and it assigned the next available letter, F:.
I was looking for some MS knowledge base to see how Windows 2008 server assigns the letter to the CD-ROM and how we can permanently fix the letter assigned to the disks and the CD-ROM so that this issue won't happen again. As you know many applications use
the path including the drive letter.
I thought that when you set a CD-ROM drive letter, it remains forever as is, and that in case of a SAN disconnection Windows assigns the same letter the drive had before the disconnection.
Please advice if you have some documentation about this. And let me know if you have any thoughts about what really happened to prevent this in the future.
    Thank you guys!!

Hi, for the APP's drive it could had been assigned a new letter if the system did seen it as a new disk/partition.
The partition was on your esx's LUN on the SAN ? (not an iSCSI connection from inside a VM?)

  • Windows 8 does not remember secondary SATA hard drive letter

So, I bought an HP Pavilion with a 1TB HDD with Windows 8 installed. I burned the recovery disks, wiped the 1TB (Seagate) drive and installed a 250GB (WD) drive. I installed the WD as the primary boot and OS, and formatted the Seagate as a basic drive for
storage. I reinstalled from the recovery disks, and the OS went exactly where I wanted it to, but the Seagate doesn't list in the My Computer display. It does appear in the BIOS, and it does appear in Disk Management.
I searched the internet and found the tips about using Disk Management to assign a drive letter to the second drive. SUCCESS! Or so I thought. I can see the second disk in disk management, and can successfully assign a drive letter so that the drive appears
in My Computer; but after any/every reboot, I have to go through the same process over and over and over again. Windows 8 is not "remembering" the drive letter settings for this particular drive.
It doesn't seem like a big deal, but this drive is intended as a shared drive for the "Homegroup" so that everybody can use it as storage. Not everybody in the small office is familiar or comfortable with going through this, so I need the system
to "remember" the disk settings all of the time.
The 1TB Seagate has the following properties:
    Disk type - Basic
    Partition style - MBR
    File system - NTFS
Does anyone have any ideas? Suggestions?
    Thank you!

    Hi alcisco70,
The drive letter miss after restarting the computer, right?
I would like to suggest you update its driver firstly, and then do the following:
open a command prompt with administrator privileges, then type:
    Diskpart
List disk (you will get detail disk info, if you only have one disk, it will show disk 0)
    Select disk 0
List volume (you will get detail volume info)
Select volume # (change # to corresponding number)
    then enter:
    attributes volume clear hidden
After that, restart the computer and reassign the drive letter to that volume. And navigate to the path below:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Search\VolumeInfoCache
Which lists all the current drive info.  check if there is any conflict.

  • Hi, my Ipod Schuffle (4 gen) dissapears from windows vista right after I execute Itunes, I've change the drive letter, erase temps in App data file, verified USB drivers, etc... Can someone guide on how to solve this?

Hi, my Ipod Schuffle (4 gen) dissapears from windows vista right after I execute Itunes, I've change the drive letter, erase temps in App data file, verified USB drivers, etc... Can someone guide on how to solve this?

If you want the shuffle to be always visible in Windows (outside of iTunes), you need to Enable disk use.
Select the shuffle in the iTunes sidebar, under DEVICES.  Over to the right, select the Summary tab.  You should see a checkbox that says Enable disk use.  Check it and click Apply.
NOTE:  If disk use is enabled, you have to Eject the shuffle in iTunes, BEFORE you physically disconnect it.  If disk use is NOT enabled, you can disconnect the shuffle at any time, as long as iTunes is not doing something with it at that moment (such as syncing); the shuffle's light will then be blinking (to indicate DO NOT DISCONNECT).
So, unless you want to use the shuffle like a USB flash drive (carry random files on it), you may want to NOT Enable disk use.

    Hello sir..
    thanks for ur reply...
for oracle 10g -----> we use XE as datasourse
    name..What?
now i am using oracle 8i...Not so from the code you posted. Didn't I see "jdbc:odbc:..." in your first post?
    so what should i
    write...in the datasourse name...that means.......
    Connection
    con=DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:oracle:thin:@loc
alhost:1521:????????","scott","tiger");Do you really use the default username and password?
What should i write in place of ?????????..The name of the database you wish to connect to, of course.
Do you have your tnsnames.ora set up properly? Did you install this database?
None of this has ANYTHING to do with the error you posted, of course. Fix that first and then worry about the thin driver. At least it appears that the code you posted managed to connect to the database.

  • How can I change the Microsoft Office Click to Run from drive letter 'Q' to something else?

How can I change the Microsoft Office Click to Run from drive letter 'Q' to something else?
We have a legacy app that used drive letter 'Q' already, now the newer machines are coming in with 'Q' preassigned to Microsoft Office Click to Run, and it is causing problems.  There has to be a way to change the drive letter assignment to some
    other letter besides 'Q'

    Hi,
Office that is delivered by Click-to-Run is installed on the Q drive, this cannot be changed.
To work around this problem, uninstall the Click-to-Run version of Office and then install with the traditional MSI-based installation.
To switch to using an MSI-based Office edition, you can learn something useful from this link below:

  • Let's create a walkthrough for booting ppc's from usb2 drives!

What started as a personal project has now evolved into a call for a community collaboration. I think there's a new trick here that should be more available to the ppc using public. Let's create a walkthrough for the public that is complete, concise, and fool-proof.
    I have been trying for days to figure out how I can create a bootable drive with what i've got;
PowerMac G5 quad, 500gig drive, 350gigs used, over 200 gigs of unimportant stuff.
Seagate external USB2 drive, 150 gigs, let's beta this puppy out til we get this
bondi blue, 80 gigs, no attachment, no remorse
    History:
I have been trying to use my 150gig usb2 external drive to create a bootable drive. The general theory WAS, apparently, that ppc's cannot boot from usb, only firewire - but now intels can boot from either. I've read in many, many posts that USB drives CAN be booted from using a ppc, by either using SuperDuper to do a complete cloning, or booting from Open Firmware and using some scripts.
I can't get either of these to work, and it's probably because i did something wrong or there isn't a solid resource out there on this topic. I think it's because my internal hard drive is bigger than my external, so any cloning i do has to omit folders (movies, pictures, music only) and just isn't a 'complete backup'.
Posts have said that SuperDuper does something that has allowed USB2 drives to be bootable on a ppc without Open Firmware, even appear in the startup disk preference panel!
I just can't get it right, somehow, although plenty of others posted positive results with the same architecture. Is there a way of getting a good install on the usb drive? Can you give me a good walkthrough of the way to go about booting to it?
    Next idea:
I have an old Bondi Blue, with 80gigs in it. Perhaps i can use this as a workaround to overcome the size issue (my internal drive being larger than my available external drive).
There's nothing important on the Bondi's hard drive, I just keep it around for OS 9, in case I need that (haven't since I was fourteen years old, though). So I thought, perhaps I can ethernet it to my powermac, reformat the drive and use it as an external drive. Then I bet I could use the install dvd to put 10.4 on it (though it won't run with anything past 10.3.1, just using it as a hard drive i could, right?). So I'd have to boot the bondi blue in some particular fashion; what would that be? As a 'slave drive' or something? Will I be able to boot from this over the ethernet cable?
If this is succesful (or first of all possible) then I could mount both the bondi (as an external/network/some kind of drive) and my usb2 hard drive to the PowerMac. With disk utility or SuperDuper, I could restore/clone the bondi to the USB2 drive, and Blam! the USB2 would have a clean install of os 10.4 that i could (maybe?) boot from with Open firmware. Then I could reinstall OS 9 on the bondi (i've been wanting to give it a fresh start anyway).
here's what i've been reading, and it's confusing, contradictory, and without solid answers:

Apparently, THIS IS possible. Now I am deadset on figuring this out. With the help of the community, we can create a walkthrough that WORKS and ppc users will be able to create bootable usb2 drives (perhaps even usb1.1 from what i've read).

  • My drive failed and I need to install CS6 to a new drive letter

Every time I try to reinstall CS6 the installer selects the old location, which is not there and so it has zero space.
    Install fails.
Installer does not allow me to change the location.
The location of the temporary files is ok. I changed that with no problem, but after the extracting and the actual installation, the install location is unchangeable and wrong.
    how can I change it?

It seems like the installer is still picking up traces of the product that were installed earlier. Please try the following two links and suggest if that worked or not.

  • Hello. I keep my IPhoto library (about 90GB) on an external HD and am trying to back it up to another external drive. Both are formatted Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled). Recently, backup has failed from the start due to error 36. Howtoresolve?

Hello. I keep my iPhoto library (about 90GB) on an external HD and am trying to back it up to another external drive. Both are formatted Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled) and both check out when scanned with Disk Utility. Recently, backup has failed from the start due to error 36. Any ideas how to  resolve? Also, what's the maximum recommended size for an iPhoto library file? Thx!

Since you can't drag the library to the other EHD for the backup see if you can duplicate it (if you have enough room on the drive) by selecting it and typing Command+d (duplicate).
If you do rebuild the library without a backup and it goes awry you won't lose your photos but you may lose your orgnaizational efforts. So try the following:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library in the location of your choosing  based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
NOTE:  Fix 2 above might be the method you might want to try first with iPLM creating the new library on your second EHD. If it works that would get your backup copy on the second EHD at the same time as repairing it. If it does'nt work then go back to Fix 1.

  • Component installation failing due to incorrect drive letter

When checking the site status of our SCCM 2012 environment I discovered that the SQL component server showed a critical status.  The error log is full of events like the one I've copied below:
Site Component Manager could not copy file "E:\Program Files\Microsoft Configuration Manager\bin\x64\smssqlbkup.exe" to "\\ALNS0014.ALONUSA.COM\L$\SMS_ALNS0050.ALONUSA.COM\bin\x64\smssqlbkup.exe".
Site Component Manager reports this error when it fails to:
    1. Create the destination directory, if it does not already exist.
    2. Assign the proper directory permissions to the destination directory.
    3. Copy the source file to the destination directory.
When I logged in to the SQL server I discovered that the SQL admin (who has since left the company) had changed the drive letters assigned to the different partitions; there is no longer a L$ drive.  The SMS_ALNS0050.ALONUSA.COM directory resides under
a different drive letter.  My question is - is there a way for me to redirect the SCCM primary site server to the correct drive?

It definitely seems tied to a SQL backup.  When I go to Site Maintenance & check the Backup Site Server task it's not currently enable.  Every hour I receive the error above for all the files in that referenced directory, followed by this error:
    SMS_SITE_SQL_BACKUP_ALNS0050.ALONUSA.COM
Site Component Manager failed to reinstall this component on this site system.
Solution: Review the previous status messages to determine the exact reason for the failure. Site Component Manager will automatically retry the reinstallation in 60 minutes. To force Site Component Manager to immediately retry the reinstallation, stop
and restart Site Component Manager using the Configuration Manager Service Manager.
It looks like it's trying to either reinstall or update the SQL component, but it's trying to go to the wrong path to copy the updated files.

  • Can't run Pages (or iWork '08 apps) from external drive

My MacBook Pro is back at Apple for repair, so I created a bootable clone of that machine's hard drive to an external hard drive. While I can boot from that drive on another MacBook, none of the iWork '08 apps will run. They start up, show a menu bar, but won't open any existing files or allow me to create new ones.
    Any help?

If you've not previously used iWork on the temporary Mac, you might consider downloading the iWork '08 trial to use. You will get all the functionality of the registered version.
For anyone with more than one Mac that they might ever want to run iWork on, I suggest getting the family pack from the beginning. For only $20 US more, you get to legally install iWork on up to five different Macs in the same household.

  • IMac, just had repaired new Harddrive erase deverything, wheres my iPhoto n all those apps, i know the gone from hard drive but i thought they would transfer from my phone

iMac, just had repaired new Harddrive erase deverything, wheres my iPhoto n all those apps, i know the gone from hard drive but i thought they would transfer from my phone? HELP ?

Those Apps would not transfer from your iPhone because the iPhone apps are iOS 5 based and the iMac apps are OSX based.  They are not the same Apps.  You will need to transfer the OSX based apps over from your external hardware backup you have kept up, Or you can reinstall the OSX based apps from their original DVD's.
    Hope this helps
