HP Touchsmart IQ528a Hard dive crash

I have tried solving this problem before and so far 3 people have given me incorrect links. My story is I purchased my IQ528a with Vista installed. My hard drive had an irrecoverable crash which left me with an unusable computer. I purchased a new hard drive but only had HP's Win 7 Upgrade so I had to purchase a brand new copy of Vista, hoping I could upgrade to Win 7. No such luck.
On trying the upgrade I was told my Vista wasn't compatible. I contacted HP and was told I could buy a recovery disk to get my computer back to it's original state and I could then update using the Win 7 Upgrade. After talking to 3 people at HP no one can give me a definite link to where I can purchase this recovery disk. All of them are basic purchase links but nowhere is there any mention of recovery disks.
This problem is not of my doing. HP installs Vista onto my computer and places what is required to reinstall it on the same hard drive. So one goes, it all goes. I paid for a computer with Vista installed and I expect to be able to reinstall  Vista. I had the recovery disks but little good they are as there is nothing there to recover and it won't reinstall Touchsmart onto a new copy of Vista.
In Short. I have a computer with a Non HP copy of Vista on it. I wish to install Win 7 Upgrade including Touchsmart software.
HOW DO I DO IT? Please don't give me generic links which leave me running around in circles for hours. I need a link directly to where I purchase the correct disk or disks. By the way, I just tried to use my recovery disk I burnt when I first bought my Touchsmart and it's corrupt. I had no way of checking it because I haven't needed it so even if I didn't have my crash it would never have worked.
PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE, somebody kindly give me a link to the correct department to purchase the disk. My Grandchildren miss their Touchsmart and I was using it for my CD collection. My Grandchildren will be given this computer at Christmas and I will be buying a similar up to date model. If I can't get Touchsmart and win 7 reinstalled then I will be buying a Panasonic all in one., and steering well clear of HP. I've already been told that if I buy the National Panasonic then I will receive a disk containing Win 7.

    I have an HP Touchsmart IQ524 which the hard drive crashed.  I replaced the hard drive with the exact same model.  I run the Recovery CDs (which I purchased from HP website) and it goes all the way through the process and after the reboot I get a message that "Windows can not install software on this hardware" - so it never completes the process.  I have formatted the hard drive and bought and returned 3 hard drives.  Any suggestions and assistance will be greatly appreciated.

    I love recovery disks when they work, and HATE them when they don't.
    Fortunately, I have a workaround for you which isn't as good as a recovery disk, but it is better than pulling your hair out, and getting nowhere.
    First of all, before you try this, did you perform the recovery with only the keyboard and mouse connected?
    Did you buy the same size or larger hard drive?
    If your answer to either question is no, then that may be the problem.
    Now to the workaround...
    If you're up to a slight but rewarding challenge you can make your own if you can read your 25 character Vista product key on the PC.
    Just download the 3 files you need at the link below, and read all of the instructions to create a bootable DVD installation disk using imageburn.
    Disregard the part of the text under the first screen shot about "extract the files to the Vista folder."
    The files were already extracted to that folder when you ran the X14.exe file by reading the text on top of the first screen shot.
    The other thing I noticed is on the 4th screen shot, where it shows Developer ID Microsoft Corporation. I had to type Microsoft Corporation in myself, and then the other codes automatically populated.
    When I went to compile the ISO file, ImageBurn gave a message that about a WIM file and ISO, and if I wanted to burn it in a different format.
    I selected No, make the ISO file.
    It was not that hard to do. I burned both the 64 bit disk and the 32 bit disk in case I ever need them.
    I tested both of them on my hp dc7100 CMT desktop PC, they worked perfectly.
    When you enter the product key, it knows what version of Vista you have.

    After you successfully install Vista, you can then install the drivers from your PC's support and driver page.

  • After a hard dive crash - HELP!

    Please Help!
    A month ago, I got the dreaded blue screen of death. I was an idiot (I'll say it) and didn't back up any of my music. I contacted Apple and they were kind enough to give me one time grace to re-download all my lost purchased music, which I did. About 800 songs later, I unfortunately was not able to download an additional 200 or so songs that were no longer on iTunes or just didn't download properly.
    My friends was able to go into my old hard drive and copy most, if not all, of my music onto DVDs. The songs that did not re-download are on there (protected files). When I got my computer up and running again (new hard drive, new iTunes AND a back up drive now) I went to drag and drop my previously imported/purchased music into the iTunes library....
    Here's the problem: most, if not all, of the music on these four DVDs did not copy over into my new iTunes library. I registered the new iTunes and authorized it to play on my computer, but still, whenever I drag and drop a Protected purchased file onto the library, it fails to read and/or copy the file over to my library...hence, not play.
    I have tried different variations to get the music back on: drag and drop, file import, folder import, File: Add, copying the whole folder onto my desktop THEN trying to add it... NOTHING WORKS.
    I purchased these songs and now they seem to be locked forever on my DVDs, unable to import and play on my new REGISTERED iTunes, under the same account and name.
    Can you please help me with any thoughts or suggestions that I may be missing?

    Let's try a standalone Apple Application Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of the issue.
    Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:

    Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
    Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleApplicationSupport.msi to do a standalone AAS install.
    Does it install properly for you? If so, does iTunes launch properly now?
    If instead you get an error message during the install, let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

  • Touchsmart TX model Hard Drive crash no help from HP

    I am so angry right now.  I spent over 1000.00 on this laptop only to have the hard drive start freezing up on me in August 10.  I took it to Best Buy on the 23rd of Dec 10.  THey told me the Hard Drive crashed.  They replaced the hard drive under warrenty.  I called HP on Feb 11 and they told me that the warrenty ran out 27 days ago.  I explained to them I had proof that my Hard Drive crashed before then and I had the paperwork from Best Buy.  THey still said I needed to pay an additional 30.00. for recovery disks.  Now I made mine, when I got the PC...but...they have since been misplaced..not that it should matter.  A warrenty is a warrenty...
    Wouldn't it have been easier to confirm the paperwork, and send the customer a new recovery disk instead of trying to nickle and dime the CUSTOMER TO DEATH!

    If user will not do this and have problem with HDD then it doesn't metter is he having still warranty or not. He will be charged for sending recovery disc by HP.

    Pulling my hair out over a complete hard drive crash. I had a new drive installed and also Windows 7/32bit. I was able to recover most of my things from external back-up, but lost all that it takes to run the Touchsmart portion. I'm not a computer Geek but would sincerely appreciate any info to bring back my Touchsmart. I've contacted customer support and little can be done ( or so they say ) now that the warranty has expired.  Has anyone had the same problem?

    Find your serial number quickly
    You can activate software without following up and registering it... at least that was the case in the past.  The serial number is normally located on the disc case or a box inside the main box.  If you did not purchase the disc from Adobe then it is possible you would have dealt with a redemption code, in which case it would have been up to you to keep a record of the serial number, especially if you did not follow up and register the software.

    my hard drive crashed.
    I reload windows, install itunes,
    but when i connect iphone it wants to delete everything off it.
    oddly enough it imported the photos. why cant it jsut import everything?
    the reason why i dont want to wipe it and start over is because I have dozens of addresses stored in Tomtom.
    if i tell to setup new device it will delete all apps including the saved data in those apps
    so i'm wondering how can I get round this problem?
    i have all my apps saved on  a second drive.
    why cant itunes just recognize this is your phone and let all app data remain on it and resync? why does it have to delete everything even after i verify my account?

    You should be able to:
    Backup the device to the new installation
    Transfer your purchases into a newly authorized library
    Recover any other media using third party tools as suggested in this post from forum regular Zevoneer
    Restore the device from the backup
    This process should switch the association of the device to the new library, preserving the data and settings in your apps.
    May also be prudent to attempt a backup to iCloud directly from the device before you start... Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > iCloud Backup > On. It won't save any media but it would preserve the general account settings and documents in case anything goes wrong while you are trying to extract your other data.
    When you get it all fixed, make a backup!

  • Hard drive crashed. How do I get OSX on my new drive?

    I think my hard drive crashed, oh my.  First, let me say that all my data is backed-up on a cloud drive or on my network drive.  So, I am good there.  The computer is now completely inoperable, can't start up, not even in safe mode. Just goes to Apple grey screen and then shuts down, that Issa far as I can get. Does not even play the start-up chime anymore.
    Question I have is this: I did not make a bootable start-up drive (dumb), so when I get a new drive to replace this, how will I get the OS on it to start- up and get the new drive ready?

    If you don't get a startup chime then you may have a worse problem. Just be prepared.
    What year is your MBP? From 2011 onward you would use Internet Recovery. Earlier you would need to install the original software that came with the computer on software restore DVDs.
    Internet Recovery
    Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
    Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
    Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
    Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
    Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
                if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
    This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.
    DVD Installation:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
    Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
    the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
             with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
             After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
             a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
             button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
             After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
             size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
             partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
             and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
             (Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
             with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
             Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
             username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
             Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
             install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
             Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
    Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

    You have to sign in and download each iTunes account individually.

    Naturally you should have a recent backup of your "crashed" hard drive. If you don't, well, hopefully you've learned a lesson but that doesn't solve your current problem.
    If all your apps and media were purchased from the iTunes App Store, don't worry about them. Redownload all your apps and media, then allow iTunes to sync with and wipe your iOS devices - which will also put all the apps and media on them. You'll lose your settings, and any data which resided only on the iOS devices, and of course you'll need to organize your iOS folders and home screens and whatnot. But you won't really lose much, and without a backup this is your best choice.
    If you have media from sources other than the iTunes App Store, look at Senuti or similar applications designed to copy media from iOS devices to computers. Use that first, then sync as I described in my second paragraph above. (I mention Senuti because it's popular. There are other options which work just as well, and some are even free.)

  • Hard Drive Crash - getting a Photo Book onto new computer

    I just had a catastrophic hard drive crash on my G5 iMac (still using 10.4, so no Time Machine). Thankfully I actually got all my photos back - backed up 2 months ago, most of the rest are still on our memory card, and the few that aren't I could save using a disk recovery program.
    However, I still have an iPhoto hard copy book on the dead drive, but hadn't ordered it yet, and would like to recover it. Even with the disk recovery program, the iPhoto library is in bad shape (I couldn't copy it to another drive - just got an error message). However, most of it appears intact. Here's what I'm hoping to do:
    1) Restore (on a new drive) from my backup from 2 months ago
    2) Copy back in the photos I either saved from the dead hard drive, or from my camera's card.
    3) Somehow get back the iPhoto book I'd been working on. Here's my question - where in my old iPhoto library would I find the file or files that make up this book? If I find them, can I simply copy those files into my backed-up iPhoto library? Or is there some other way I can get my iPhoto book back?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. All books, calendars, cards, etc. are contained in the library's database file, Library6.iPhoto. If you can recover that file from your damaged drive put it in your recovered library and see if it will bring back the book. However, if the structure of the library package is not exactly like it was when it crashed it will not work.
    Without a complete backup of the iPhoto LIbrary package it's neigh on to impossible to recover a book or calendar from bits and pieces of a recovered library. There are other ways a library can be damaged, primarily the database file, and a very easy way to recover from it is to have a *very current* backup copy of the database file. One way to achieve is it described in the tip at the end of my signature. It describes a way to have a backup copy that can be only minutes old if you run it properly.
    Also, to protect your image files themselves get an external HD and use it to backup the full library and other important files.
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

    My hard drive crashed and I replaced it.  I also switched from ATT to Verizon for my iPhone.  Now when I sync with iTunes, only about a tenth of my songs are on the new iPhone.  one or two from each album.  I still have an iPad with all my songs on it.  I subscribed to music match, but when I try on the iPad it wants to match with iTunes and erase a\the music on the iPad.  I have no music on iCloud when I sign in.  Can anyone help me???

    If the hard drive that crashed is the one that stored the itunes library, be sure to restore the library from Time Machine (mac) or whatever backup you use on windows.  That will get back your music.  I suspect that the replacement drive has an empty itunes library and thus, perhaps, the itunes match used that to sync to its servers.
    Try posting in the iTunes Match forum, you'll probably find more knowledgeable folks there.
