HP touchsmart keys

I just upgraded to Windows 7 and the keys on my laptop for turning the screen and HP mediasmart no longer work. Does anyone know what to do?

Many posts about this...no real bullet proof solutions though.  Look for one with QuickLaunch button in the title.

  • HP Envy Touchsmart 15-j004sa keyboard skipping keys

    Hi,
I have just purchased a HP Envy Touchsmart 15-j004sa keyboard and am very happy with except for one thing. The keyboard keeps skipping keys.
This is most prominent around the centre of the keyboard. Where they keyboard seems to flex (is this normal?)
It appears that in order for a key to be registered as being pressed I need to press it directly in the centre of the key, which may be why it happens mostly with keys near the centre of the keyboard.
Is this something that can be fixed? I have seen reports of other users experiencing the same problem.
I dont want to return the laptop as it meets all my other requirements but this issue is just too frustrating to live with if it can not be resolved.

  • My HP 520 Touchsmart only has a blue HP screen and none of the F keys work. Any ideas?

My HP 520 Touchsmart showed be the blue HP screen this morning and none of the function keys F9-F11 produce any results.

i would discuss this with your carrier

  • My touchsmart will not boot allI get is a blue screen with f key to do different things

My Touch smart desk top will not boot when I turn it on all I get is a blue screen with HP in the center and f key functions

    Hello charleshobby:
Your computers start up has been corrupted. No big deal. Turn on your computer hold down on F-8 key as you turn it on. This should put you in safe mode. If f-8 key fails then just disconnect the power cord at the power adapter and plug it back in and turn on your computer (This is called a fource start up) automatically puts your computer into safe mode. Use your arrow kek select safe mode with net work. Top one I belive. In safe mode close out Help and Support window displayed. Open up Recovery Manger and select Microsoft System Restore. Click next then click next again now a list of dates will appair choose a date before this event occured. Click next and let your computer complete the sytem restore. My guess Microsft up dates caused this issue. After this is finished now go back and change all your update setting to down load up dates but let me choose witch ones to install. Only install three at a time. To a void future occurances and black screen or blue screen issues. Follow these steps for blue screen or black screen. Please click on Kudos if this has resolved your issue. Thank you frrw.

  • HP 15-d069wm TouchSmart Notebook PC keyboard certain keys not working

Certain keys (space bar, left shift key, z, x, c, v, b, n, m , comma, period, /) and number keys (1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 9) on the keyboard of my laptop are not working. I already tried to do several hard resets (disconnecting power supply and taking out battery) but that didn't help. I also "uninstalled" the keyboard using the device manager, that didn't work either.
The laptop was bought in June 2014. I'm using an external USB keyboard right now.
Any ideas how to fix that issue?
    Thanks!

  • Cannot detect any wireless networks on my HP ENVY TouchSmart m7 j120dx

    Hello,
My laptop won't pick up any wireless networks at all - I'm having what seems like a few different problems:
    1.  Because the laptop won't pick up any wireless networks, I can't of course connect to the internet without using my ethernet cable.
    2.  When I try to turn my adapter on using the F12 key, all it does is toggle airplane mode - which isn't going to help me connect to the internet.
    3.  When I go to 'Network' under PC Settings, I can toggle airplane mode but the bluetooth is greyed out and can't be toggled and it doesn't even give me an option to turn back on my wifi adapter.
    4.  When I went into the Network and Sharing Center to enable the adapter that way under 'Change Adapter Settings', I couldn't even see the adapter listed there.  All it showed was Ethernet and Hamachi because I use LogMeIn Hamachi on my computer.
By this point, I was like "Oh, great - the adapter might somehow not even be there even though it was last night," (I was online wirelessly the night before) so I went into the device manager and then expanded Network Adapters I only saw the same two Ethernet and LogMeIn adapters.
    5.  So next, I tried downloading the adapter - but the problem is, I have no idea what kind my laptop is supposed to have.  Going to the download drivers section in the support area of the hp website, I found many options and none of them seemed to work.  I also tried redownloading the Wireless Button Driver (whatever that's called) and that didn't work.
    5.  I even tried doing a system restore to a point of about a week ago - this also did not solve my problem because the same things were happening and the same things I tried above still are not solving the problem either.
I know countless other people have had the same problem(s) mentioned above (simple Google search told me that) with their HP ENVY Notebook PCs, so I'm hoping that someone can help me and finally solve this problem for me.
The model  is HP ENVY TouchSmart m7 j120dx, the model number is E8A11UA#ABA, and my computer is running Windows 8.1 64-bit.
    On another note, here's the names of the only 2 adapters that show up in my device manager list (one is for LogMeIn Hamachi);
Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller (Ethernet)
LogMeIn Hamachi Virtual Ethernet Adapter (Hamachi)
The wireless was working fine before with Hamachi installed, so I doubt that has any significance.
If there's any other information you need that I did not mention above, feel free to ask me.  I look forward to someone replying as soon as possible and being able to find a solution to this problem for me!
EDIT: One other thing I should mention is that the wifi in my location is working fine for every other device I try (phone, gaming console, other people's laptops/desktops, etc.

    Hello dginther,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand wireless is not working properly. If the issue just began occurring, I would perform a system restore. I want you to bring the computer back to the earliest restore point possible, in an attempt to dodge whatever caused the issue. Here is a document on how to perform a System Restore: System Restore
Next, please try the steps in this HP document: Troubleshooting Your Wireless Network and Internet Connection (Windows 8)
These steps should be enough to resolve the issue. If not, you can try a manual reinstall of the driver:
    1. Go into Device Manager, then Network adapters.
    2. Right-click on the wireless driver, and select "Uninstall".
    3. Restart the computer. This will force the driver to reinstall itself.
Please let me know the results of your troubleshooting. Thanks!

  • Brightness not working on HP ENVY TouchSmart 15-j178ca

    Hi,
Brightness was working fine on my HP ENVY TouchSmart 15-j178ca with Windows 8.1 64 bits (F2 key, F3 key and Windows brightness slider).  NVIDIA GeForce Experience showed there was an update available.  After doing the update I have lost all brightness control.  Tried reverting to old drivers, tried hp latest drivers and even tried Intel and NVIDIA latest drivers without any success.  Here's the details :
    Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600 10.18.10.3304 (from hp sp63553 package)
    Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600 10.18.10.3304 (from hp sp65232 package)

NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M 9.18.13.4411 (from NVIDIA)
I have always uninstalled drivers before reinstalling new ones and my BIOS is up to date...  Any ideas?

  • My HP Touchsmart 610 screen is blank when I switch it on. only less that a second screen flash.

when I turn on my computer hp touchsmart 610 desktop the screen has only less than a second flash and then it's blank and I can't see anything. I used some instructions like pushing f10 key for 5 seconds and reseting the bios and blo blo but it won't work. I also removed cd or usb but it still not working. plesae somebody help.

    Hi Fanoos,
Although this post is a couple years old, I figured I would give it a reply anyway just so other people with similar issues have a little more up to date info.
AugyTek is actually the name of my repair shop, and this is a "fun" problem that I see all the time.
Regarding specifically the Touchsmart 610 system, when you see the flash like that, there is an easy way to tell exactly where the problem is originating from.
First, check your power supply "brick".  It should be warm to the touch with it plugged in and machine running.  If it feels like it is going to burn your hand, your PS is probably the culprit.  I recommend taking it to your local technical shop, or using a voltmeter if you have one to see exactly what it is putting out.  It should be 19v give or take a couple tenths of a volt.  Anything more than a couple of tenths off and your power supply is probably the culprit, and may have done some additional damage to the PC itself.
If everything is good there, now it's time to assess internally.  Power off the machine, disconnect the power supply, hold the power button in for a couple of seconds until the green light on the back is no longer lit.  Follow the instructions on the HP website to removing both the left and right covers on the back of the PC.  (Take proper precautions for static electricity.)
Take out the Hard Drive and the RAM.  replace the covers, but no need to screw them in.  Plug your power supply back in and power the machine on.
You should get one short and one long beep and nothing should display on the screen.  This is testing for proof of life from the board.  If you get no beeps, your board is malfunctioning and sadly with these it often is easier and cost effective to just get a new machine than replace the board.
If you get beeps, the board is fine and you need to replace one stick of ram after powering off properly again and then start it up.  You should be able to see the "no boot media" message it displays because the system will halt.
If the lettering is fuzzy, diminished, in a low resolution, or looks anything other than normal, the likely cause is video related.  You now have to determine to what extent the video is malfunctioning.
(Yes, I know that you probably arrived at this conclusion already that the something was messed in the video/display area, but I can't tell you how many times I have asked people if they have tested for other things and they say no or how do you do that?  By ruling out other malfunctions, you arrive with the correct solution faster.)
You can power the machine down and remove the back covers and carefully reseat ALL micro style cables that you can see.   There should be 3 in the top left, 2 on the inverter (the thing with the cover), and then 4 in the top right that are kind of hard to manage.  These cables are all related to power, with some related to video and the touchscreen itself.
So now boot the system up normally, if you still have the one second screen, then attempt to plug in USB devices, insert a CD/DVD, and if you have one handy, use a USB to VGA adapter.  If any of these things do not initalize/work properly with the typical windows sound when you plug them in, the likely cause is your motherboard, related to power issues.
If your board is not able to route enough power through it past the graphical chip, into the inverter, and the LCD, power USB devices, etc., this is a tell tale sign that your machine has issues supplying enough power to all these things.  This is why you will see the one second screen everytime you turn the screen on or wake it out of standby, because there isn't enough or consistent power to keep the system running normally.
Because it is fairly cost prohibitive and time consuming to replace the board, you can pretty much write off the system.
Now if your USB devices and Optical drive work fine and everything initializes, you may be able to get away with replacing the inverter.  These parts do go bad, and the inverter, which sits on top of the optical drive in the system is naturally exposed to heat from the DVD drive and is a really bad design flaw.  Replacing this may solve your problem.
If it is replaced and you still have the same issue, likely your problem is with the LCD screen itself, and again... not really worth it to replace it.
If it is your board and power issues, if you are hell bent on repairing this, and you are familiar with how to reflow a board, or know a professional that can attempt it, you certainly can give it a whirl.  DO NOT attempt the unprofessional ways to reflow a board as you see on some videos.  Whereas these methods can work, you need to have an intricate knowledge of electronics and temperature effects on circutry to even warrant attempting them.
Some people say a hair dryer will work, but the problem is then you dont know exactly how much heat you are at temperature wise, and a hair dryer will auto cool and heat it's coils as it sees fit to maintain it's own stability, where as a genuine heat gun will not.  Again, if you don't have experienced knowlege in reflowing boards, I wouldn't recommend doing it.
By reflow, I am referring to reflowing the solder in the board.  Unless a visible malfunctioned blown or bulged capacitor is present, reflowing the solder to it's original paths is done by the way of keeping the board level, and gradually and evenly heating the board up to a temperature to where solder melts.  Solder will naturally go back into it's original form at a certain temperature and reseal any cracks or breaks in the solder, thereby repairing the flow of electricity for that certain component.  This is also assuming the component that has the solder is not damaged as well.
This process is best left to professionals with proper equipment, because you can in fact to irrepariable damage to the board if you are inexperienced.  Being careful will not save you in this instance.
The one thing you want to remember with All in ones, and especially touch screens, is that they generate an AMAZING amount of heat.    Any blockage from dust or covered vent ports can quickly lead to your machines demise.  Due to the design of any All in one, heat has been, and probably always will be an issue with these units.

  • [BIOS Update Failure] HP ENVY TouchSmart 15-j021tx stuck at black screen on startup

    Hello
So I decided to update the BIOS on my laptop because it was on the recommended list of driver updates. It started off smooth at first, but then the screen turned black and just stayed like that for like an hour. Having read from other posts that BIOS updates should take a minute if properly executed, in the fear that my update is not working properly I decided to shut it down. (I had to pull out the battery to shut it down because even the power off button was not working).
But then when I switched it back on the screen remained black forever with the LED near capslock flashing twice. I tried pressing windows key and B key method but didn't make a difference, pulling out the battery and the AC power method didn't work also. I did refer to the HP help document that said "if your capslock LED is flashing twice, it means it is trying to recover the BIOS so just wait until it reboots itself properly". Well I have been waiting for 20 hours now and I am pretty sure this is not going to work out either.
Any help on what I could do at the moment? I don't want to send it to HP to get repaired cuz that will take weeks while I need it working ASAP since my semester at uni has started already and I am an IT major!
And shame on you HP...why recommend it to me when the update is not proven to be 100% safe....
It is on Windows 8.1 64 bit,

    Welcome to the HP  forum!
Thank you for your query.  I am pleased to assist you to the best of my ability!
I understand that after upgrading to Windows 8.1, your remote control does not work, or the volume control built into the side of the computer. HP does not have updated drivers for Windows 8.1 and your computer. Downloading or Updating Software and Drivers for HP Computers. You could try the built in troubleshooter, to aid in resolving issues.  Follow these steps to run the troubleshooter:
    a. Press Windows key + C on your keyboard to show the Charms bar.
    b. Type Troubleshooting and click Troubleshooting under Settings.
    c. Now type Hardware Troubleshooter in the Search option.

  • Touchsmart 600-1120 successfully upgraded to Windows 8 Pro

I just wanted to report my Touchsmart 600-1120 (BK139AA) was successfully upgraded from Win7 64 bit to Windows 8 Pro 64 bit, and I haven't run into any issues.   Here are the steps I went though.
    1. Made disk image backup using Win7 Backup and Restore.
    2. Ran the Windows 8 advisor tool to have a record the computer passes minimum requirements and I had a list of what apps will no longer work. I did go ahead and removed all of them. I never did use those apps much anyways.
    3. Ordered Windows 8 Pro upgrade DVD from Amazon.  I potentially had multiple computers to upgrade, and wanted the DVD.  Requested the free product key to unlock the Media Center add-on pack and received it in two days via email.
    4. Made another disk image backup using Win7 Backup and Restore in the event a Win7 restore is needed.
    5. Ready to upgrade.  Inserted the 64 bit DVD, nothing happened.  Manually launched Startup.exe on the DVD.
    6. Selected option to upgrade Win7, keeping all docs and preferences and let it go.  Took an hour or so, I didn't keep track.  Rebooted a couple of times and responded to any prompts for info.  When I received the logon screen for the first time, I ejected the upgrade DVD.
    7. When I logged in for the first time, I had no issues with the touch driver.  The touch was very reponsive.  Played around for a while exploring a bit.  It's actually lots of fun.  I've never been exposed to an ipad or tablet, so this was the first time I've experienced a "tabletized" interface for lack of a better term.
    8. Followed the instructions in the email to install and unlock the Media Center pack.  It took a while to add the software.  My only concern was if the AVerMedia TV card (A327) would work.  After the install there was the normal Media Center icon shown on the app tiles.  Launched it and had go through the process of setting up the TV tuner.  Once it found the tuner card (yea!) I told it to use the existing preferences for channels and such and it worked like it did in Win7.
Launched Windows Update and it found a few things to update.  I played around for a couple of hours to get familiar with the new interface, and how to display the old Win 7 desktop.  It took me a while to figure out how to make an image backup.  I had another computer handy with internet access and it was quicker to google to find answers to my questions.  One of which is the option to use the familiar Win 7 backup and restore, so I made a new disk image with the new OS and stored it away.
I have this computer on the kitchen counter and use it mainly for TV watching while cooking and occasional recipe lookups.  In the Windows store, there are some free recipe apps, like allrecipes.com.  I installed a bunch of the free recipe and news apps.  I don't know if I'd use the touch screen on a regular basis, although it is nice to have, it leaves lots of fingerprints, particuarily in a kitchen environment.
I'm very relieved I didn't run into hoops I had to jump thorough considering reading about Win8 upgrade issues others have experienced.

Hello, I was also able to go to Windows 8Pro, but have been unsuccessful trying to go to 8.1 or to 10, great PC feel I will need to restore it back to Windows 7. Have you been able to at least get it up to Windows 8.1? Thanks

  • Don't know power on password for hp touchsmart 520-1020 windows 7 64 bit

My touchsmart 520-1020 was powered off and when it came back on it was asking for a power on password. Can anyone help me with this? Please? when i enter a random password three times it doesn't give me a code. it shows a key each time i press enter after entering a password and after the third time it has an asterik. and then no more options. the date is shown at the bottom right hand corner.

    Hello cmeryers76:
Your password should be the same one you use to log into windows.  Why you are seeing a date is be yound me. This seems more like a bad virus or malware. If your sign in password still fails. Unplug the computer while this screen is still being displayed. This is what we call fource restart. Ounce the computer is completely off plug it back in and turn on your computer you should start up in safe mode screen option use arrow keys select safe mode with net working. Close out help and support window. Locate the the recovery manger and  Click yes in prompt window if displays then select Microsoft System Restore in next two screens click on next You well eventually end up with dates listed choose a date before this event occurred then click next follow all command promts.  Ounce recovery point has been completed run your antivirus software. Then do a PC Tune Up.  Go to your control pannel and open up Performance Information and Tools  select Adjust power settings on the right hand side. Then select Choose when to off the display. Next window switch all boxes to never. You will never have to worry about this ever again.  On top of that the issues you face trying to wake up the computer from sleep mode.
If the same screen displays on start up by a chance then unplug the computer hold down power button for five secounds then plug it back in turn on computer tap f-8 key follow above recovery  steps. If this fails to open in safe mode. Then full recovery is only option  requires recover discs.  Power off the computer turn it on and tap f-10 key and insert disc one of recovery disc follow all command prompts. Ouce fullrecover is completed follow the above dirrections for the display settings above switch all thee settings to never. frrw

  • Where can I download HP Recovery Manager for my TouchSmart 610--1150xt running WIndows 7 x64?

Many users would prefer a clean install of Windows with the option to install only those applications that they personally find useful.  Currently, if performing a clean install of Windows -- even if creating recovery disks and maintaining the HP recovery partition -- it is not possible to access the Recovery Manager with the option to re-install only the drivers and any useful preinstalled software.  The only options under these circumstances is to perform a system restore back to the factory state thus removing an separate clean installation of the operating system or reinstalling the limited number of drivers and applications available for the TouchSmart from HP Support.
If it were possible to reinstall the HP Recovery Manager software, it should also be possible to selectively re-install needed drivers and applications from the recovery partition using the "Software Program Reinstallation" and "Hardware Driver Reinstallation" options.  These options are not available from the boot menu or reinstall disks.
I have found downloads for the Recovery Manager software specific for Windows Vista and for certain specific HP laptops running WIndows 7, but I have been unable to locate a similar download for the TouchSmart 610 AIO.  Has anyone located a download of the HP Recovery Manager software applicable for the TouchSmart 610?

This procedure uses the original factory installed HP OEM Windows product key and HP OEM certificate and requires the HP BIOS to have SLP/SLIC v2.1. This procedure will install a completely clean Windows 7 installation and may require the installation of HP drivers. Some HP drivers and/or HP software needed by your computer may not install because the OS is no longer branded as "HP". Please create your personal HP Recovery Disc set before continuing with these instructions. Back-up all of your personal data and files before proceeding with this process.
    1) Download and unzip ABR Beta for Windows 7. Here is the main page to ABR for Windows Vista. Please follow the "How to use it" section for information and instructions on how to use it. These steps apply to Windows 7 as well. Perform the "activation backup" on your original hard drive with the factory HP OEM Windows installation, saving the backup files in several locations (USB stick, SD card, external drive, etc.).
    2) Download your version (the version that was preinstalled on your HP computer) of Windows 7 from Official Windows 7 SP1 ISO from Digital River. Using the built-in Windows 7 CD/DVD burning software, burn the downloaded Windows 7 ISO image to a DVD.
    3) Install Windows 7 from your new "Windows 7 disc" to your SSD, following all prompts as needed. Don't enter a Windows product key and don't allow Windows to try to auto-activate. After the Windows installation is complete, run ABR "activation restore" to "install" the previously backed up product key and certificate. Verify that Windows is activated, if not activated... repeat "activation restore" until Windows 7 is activated.
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I, personally, have used the above procedure with great success on many HP desktops and laptops. I can't comment on how well it works with HP TouchSmart computers as I haven't had one to experiment on until recently.

  • HP Touchsmart 600 PC blue screen and video problems

    Hi,
Just a quick bit about me before I get started.  I am A+, Network+ and Security+ certified and have been working on computers for years.  But this time I've run into something I haven't been able to diagnose and my friend doesn't want to format and reinstall windows on the machine.  I've been working on a friends computer and its a HP Touchsmart 600 with Win 7 64bit.  The biggest issue he is having is every few days it blue screens.  The latest one was caused by ntoskrnl.exe ( nt+8f1b2 ).  The majority of the blue screens have been ntoskrnl.  I posted all the minidump files over on another forum and it was suggested Norton was causing the problems so I removed it but it hasn't solved the issue.
The other issue he is having is every now and then the screen gets blurry.  He had been resetting the computer to fix this and I assumed it was a hardware problem.  But it happened to me while I was looking at it last week and right after that I got a UAC control box that popped up for a program I had been installing and it was clear and when I clicked allow the entire screen cleared up and was just fine.  I've updated all drivers on the machine and it has all the lastest windows updates.  It doesn't have the latest touch screen software that is out.  I believe it is version 4.0?  He has the 3.0 version and he doesn't use the computer as a touch screen he uses a mouse and keyboard.
Any help or advice on this would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks,

Shut down your computer. Or just disconnect the power cord. Reconnect power cord if you used that method. Turn on computer and holp down on F-11 key this is your full recovery method. Your computer should start a full recovery to factory settings. If this fails then you know the hard drive is shot or memory chips are damaged. Then take your computer in for repairs. Good Luck I hope the  full recovery does the trick. Oh it will tell you if recovery fails another screen will display with more options just click on dynastic if it is your hard drive massaged will be hard drive not excist. Means hard drive is not being detected. Send computer in for replacement of parts.

Step 1, With the Windows 7 DVD in your DVD drive    press any key when promped @ 'Press any key to boot from CD / DVD...', as soon as the message is gone, quickly press F8 to show the boot options list. Select Safe Mode and install 7. It will allow the initial stages & file copying.
Step 2, When 7 restarts for the first time, press F8 and select 'safe mode'. A dialog box will appear stating that windows cannot continue in safe mode 'ok' to restart.

    cd system32
then type CompMgmtLauncher (it takes a few seconds to load) you can then access device manager from this console.
Step 4, Select DEVICE MANAGER , and disable all yellow devices is  the offending hardware & choose to disable it. JUST LEAVE ENABLE NETWORK ADAPTERS !

    Hi Guys,
I have the solution to your problems and I will go ahead an explain it in detail so that no questions will be raised.
I have struggled to get WINDOWS 7 (32BIT) to run on the Touchsmart 300 PC now for three days (and nights) but I know how you can do it.
The problem lies within the VGA Adapter (Graphics Card) this little buddy has incompatible drivers with the inbuilt functions of the Touchsmart PC in its generic (Windows Preloaded) form. Therefore what you can do is the this.
Step 1: Insert Windows 7 (32Bit) disk and start the setup process and follow it until it hits the problem. (Millisecond of Bluescreen)
Step 2: Once the PC starts booting repeatedly press F8 (I mean it just keep on pressing that button until you can select "Safe Mode")
Step3: Once Windows Setup screen is back it will tell you an error! Which is good. INSTEAD of pressing "OK" (to restart) press SHIFT + F10 (opens the command prompt)
Step4: You should automatically be in \Windows\System32 now enter the following command: CompMgmtLauncher (This is the Device Manager).
(If the default directory is not System32 the navigate to it by entering "cd windows" and "cd system 32" (cd = change directory)
Step5: In the Device Manager (do not worry it will take some time to load) select navigate to "Display Adapters" - "ATI Radeon ..." RIGHT-CLICK on it and choose disable. (To be sure Windows will not have any other troubles you should do the same for all highlighted devices. the once with the yellow triangle)
Step6: Once this is done restart your system and let the install run into the normal mode and finish the install.
Step7: Once Windows starts for the first time. Use the provided ATI Radeon Driver from HP (NOT the original one) from the support download website to install the correct driver.
    Step8: Resart and enjoy!
Hope this helps and let me say to AMD/ATI yopu guys really suck at your one product drivers!
    Cheers and Out.
