HP UPD 5.3 - some clients print garbage

Server: Windows 2008 R2 SP1.
Clients: XP SP3.
Yesterday I upgraded from HP UPD PS 5.2.6.9321 to 5.3.1.10527.  This morning I find out that tons of users are now printing "garbage".  This garbage is actually raw PostScript code from all types of applications.  The kicker to this problem
is that it appears to be PC and/or user based.  For example, WorkstationA prints out garbage but WorkstationB prints just fine -- they both are using the same queue on the print server.  Deleting all HP printers from the client and
re-installing from the print server does not fix it.  If I change the print driver on the print server for the problem queue from HP Universal Printing PS (v5.3) to HP Universal Printing PS (v5.2), then the XP clients can print just fine again.
I've contacted HP and found out that other clients are reporting this problem too.  Awesome.
While I wait for HP to investigate/resolve the problem, what would cause some XP clients to print raw postscript while others work fine?

Dear Customer,

  • Some clients print, some don't

Server is PPC running OS X Server 10.4.11.
    Clients are OS X 10.4.11 or 10.5.
Users are enabled for print in WGM, Server Admin says Print Services are on.
Epson printer is connected to the server.
Some of the clients can print to the shared printer. Some cannot. In one case, a user has two installations of the Mac OS X on one machine, each on a separate disk. For some work, the user boots OS X 10.4, for other work he boots 10.5. The 10.4 install can print, the 10.5 cannot.
I have deleted and added the printers several times. I can see a printer with the correct name in the browser, it adds but sending it a print job is not received by the print service.
User logon is the same for both installations.
All suggestions, links and WAG's warmly encouraged.

Sorry I can't provide a better answer than the others but think for a second.
Think about your customers' motivations for copying instead of calling you.
Try to imagine what's in their minds. "Why should I call the photographer and pay him for prints when I can do it myself?"
    You have two options:
    1) Use technical means to prevent them from doing it.
    2) Provide them something that they can't get anywhere else.
You can use Digimarc. You can visibly watermark. You can use some software scheme to encrypt files or make them difficult to copy. You can probably do 100 different things. But you still haven't addressed the main question.
What can you do that would make them WANT to call you back?
What can you do that provides them with a service that they can't do themselves?
I don't know what you can do because I don't know your skills. I don't know what equipment you have. I don't know the nature of your business. However, let me make some general suggestions.
Can you provide "giant" hi-res prints?
    How about picture packages?
Memory books? DVD slide shows? Graphic design?
I don't know... My suggestions are probably lame. But I'm trying to say that you should try to do something that people really want and that they would willingly pay for.
Long story short: Let's apply some lateral thinking.

  • LP print Server Prints garbage via Samba

    Hi,
I have configured a print server that prints just fine when used by a Solaris host. Samba does not print at all using a pcl driver and prints garbage with a PS driver. The server is Solaris 10 Update 5. Samba is 3.X. I used this command to get one of the printers working on unix:
    lpadmin -p myprinter -v /dev/null -m netstandard_foomatic -o protocol=bsd,dest=myprinter1:9100 -o banner=never -n /etc/lp/model/ppd/system/HP_LaserJet_4250.ppd
If I chop the command down to just:
    lpadmin -p myprinter -v /dev/null -m netstandard -o protocol=bsd,dest=myprinter1:9100 -o banner=never
It will print jobs from unix/samba clients. From what I can tell Samba likes raw devices and the ppd file I use is a Postscript file. The reason i need the ppd is so that the printer can do some useful things like double sided printing and 2 pages per sheet.
    Any help is appreciated.

Finally, it allows hardly any of the HP multifunctionality it's supposed to come with.
This is a limitation of using third party wireless print servers. Most multifunctions will only allow (simple) printing.
HP touts this as being a wireless-adaptable printer, so everything should work with my wireless setup.
I would expect this is the case IF you use the HP wireless adapter for your printer.
The D-Link is supposed to work with Macs also.
My HP LaserJet 1300 works fine wirelessly with this setup.
This would be expected as it is just a printer.

  • Photoshop CS3 printing garbage characters on HP LaserJet 1300

After installing CS3, Photoshop prints garbage characters on my HP LaserJet 1300.
Yes, I have tried printing as ASCII, ASCII85, Binary and JPEG - nothing helps (plus the settings won't stick even after holding down Alt and clicking the Remember button).
The only way to print right now is to choose Save as PDF in the print dialogue, open the PDF in Adobe Reader and print from there.
    Any ideas?

tzw - I responded about this on another forum. I talked to technical support at Adobe about this exact issue about 2 months ago - can't print photoshop CS3 on any of my three HP printers. ( I have a HP1200, an HP 2550 and a HP photosmart 7660) (CS2 works fine) They worked with me for about an hour - called me back and worked some more, and then decided to send it up to the programmers (or engineers or whatever) The programmers called me and worked with me for another hour - trying different set-ups etc., but the conclusion by them was that this was a huge problem in that there were a lot of HP printers out there - that they were going to give this their top priority - and that there would be a fix for this soon. (I have yet to see a fix.)

  • Unable to load Client print control

I know this question has been asked and I have read all of the responses.  But, I seem to have a unique problem.
I am using Server 2008 r2 sp2 with ie8. And my problem is getting the error Unable to Load Client Print Control on the client machine for reporting services.
The standard answer here is that the RSClientPrint.cab needs to be loaded on the client machine and installed with a click of the print icon with admin rights.  I have done that as a administrator and the print icon works fine as an adminstrator.
However, when I log as a non-admin user, that is when I get the error.  The rsclientprint.dll shows up in the registry, but it just does not work for a non-admin user.
I have a open ticket with a MSDN tech at Microsoft, but he seems to be at a loss and is not trying very many things that lead me to believe that this can be resolved.
I am wondering if some else out here has had this problem and got it to work.
    Thanks for any help.

    Hi KeithTexas,
It seems that the non-Administrator users don't have sufficient permissions on the “Downloaded Program Files” folder where the RSClientPrint control is stored. So, please grant to the user:
1.Open C:\Windows, right-click on the “Downloaded Program Files” folder and click “Properties”.
2.Switch to the “Security” tab, click “Edit”.
3.In the “Security” window, click “Add” and add the specific user to the list.
4.Check the “Allow” box for “Read & execute” permission and click “OK”.

  • Can't Print ( No Client Printer available ) on SGD 4.3.915 Webtop

Using SGD 4.3.915 with Java JRE 6.0 Update1 (or any Java Version), connecting via Webtop (ie 7 and firefox 1.5.0.12) returns you a "no client printer" error. Using classic webtop is just fine, pdf printing is available there.
Default printer on client (win xp sp2) is a network printer connected via unc share.
any checklists available? Maybe some fiile system permissions, can s/o post me the correct permissions and ownerships for the /opt/tarantella/webserver directory pls?

the sgd is running on a sles 10.
the initial installation was fine, but we had some printing issues and java permisions, so we "opened" the fs permissions to get it working.
now i needed a template to change it back to the original fs permissions, therefore i extracted the rpm file.

  • Printing Garbage Characters

When a particular user prints a certain PDF the first page, which appears to be a form, prints mostly weird characters with some numbers mixed.  If I log into the same machine under my login I can print it fine. My guess is that user has some setting set that is causing this issue.  Any thoughts?

My issue wasn't just about the first page; most of my pages printed garbage, only a few printed fine.
I started opening the PDF file in Preview and printing from that. I could add blank pages if I wanted a multi-page document to print some blank pages on the back of my 2-sided copies in Preview (Edit - Add blank page). This works great! I've spent months trying to figure this out. I'm running Mac 10.5.8 OS with an updated version of Reader (also printed garbage) and Acrobat Standard 7.0, which is old, but I need it to make one PDF from multiple PDFs.

  • HP3015 Printing Garbage Characters

We have had 2 HP3015's that all of a sudden will start printing garbage like ASCII characters.  Tried reloading drivers.  If we put in HP601 machines instead, the machines function fine.  Hospital setting.

  • Reinstalled Printer prints garbage. How do I fix this?

    Hi
    Baffled!!
Hardware - 2 windows 7 PCs (IBM R60 & Tosh Tecra M10) on a simple home workgroup network.
One aging Laserjet 6P/MP Postscript connected to one of them (Tosh) via a USB->Parallel port connector.
All was working fine and has been for many months. And then a print job failed. It was hard to get rid of the job so I ended up deleting the print queue on the Tosh (stopping spooler and deleting files (from spool\printers) and resintalling the printer on the
    Tosh.
Win7 does not find the printer automatically so I have to pick a port. Im told I have 3 USB printer ports - how do I know which one to usel does it matter and I thoguht they were supposed to go away when not used? Anyway I pick one and yes I can print but only
garbage - loads of small 9pt - looks like line printer font) characters with osme overprinting
    Hmm so a few checks
= Printer self-test works fine and reports no problems
= Printer test print works fine.
    - Print test page from windows 7 is garbage - lines of small (6pt?) random characters, some overprinting - basically garbage.
    - In desparation, I dug out an old XP laptop with an actual parallel port plugged in the printer (which had the printer installed on iun a few years back) and it  printed perfectly first time.
I have deleted printers from devices and printers (also printers and printer drivers from print management), rebooted and reinstalled printers and drivers until I am sick of it.
I have tried LPT1 and the USB port
I have tried installing the printer on a different computer (the one that normally accesses it via the network)
So I suspoect a problem with the printer drivers. I have tried to ensiure fresh drivers were downloaded but I am not clear whether I managed to achieve this. In fact I suspect not.
    How do I fix this?
So, how do I download a fresh set of drivers?
If I can do that, is it sufficient to delete all printers; delete all drivers; reboot and reinstall all printers?
And what do I have to do to ensure windows uses the fresh set of drivers - assuming I can download them
    Thanks for any suggestions

    Hi,
Since all drivers in Windows update are produced from manufacturer and then after passing the Windows Logo Program testing, then they can be distribute onto update, that should be little delayed. I suggest we download the latest driver applied to Windows
    7 from manufacturer site.
Before installing the driver, is suggest you open Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features and delete the printer driver that is already installed.
You can temporarily disable security software and Windows Firewall service to test this issue. If the issue still persists, let’s check the Spooler dependency services in registry.
    a. Click Start , type regedit in the Search box, and then press ENTER.
    b. Locate and then click the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Spooler
    c. Right-click Spooler, click Export, Save a backup file on your desktop.
NOTE: If an unexpected issue be encountered after modifying registry, please double click the file to restore the backup .
    d. In the details pane, if the DependOnService value shows values of RPCSS and other key, right-click DependOnService, and then click Modify.
    e. In the Value data box, delete other key, and then click OK.
    f. Exit Registry Editor.
Please restart the computer to test this issue again.
Meanwhile, I would like to share the following link with you to check the issue:

  • I recently upgraded to Reader X, using XP SP3, but it prints garbage

I have two printers, an HP j4580 (default) and a Brother mfc-7420 (now gives poor quality after a number of years of satisfactory use).  I can usually print a single page PDF but if there are multiple pages, some or all of them print garbage.  I have tried unloading and reloading the software without success.  I have seen tips for similar issues but none of them address my set-up, for example the j4580 properties does not have a function allowing or not allowing the printer to choose fonts.  I have also tried downloading files to disk before printing but this does not make any difference.  I have read that versions of Reader prior to X are wide open to malware attack and although I preferred Reader 9 I am not happy about going back to it for this reason.  HELP!

In total desperation I went back to 9.4.5 today after reader X gave me complete garbage on a ONE-PAGE document in very simple text only!!
I am still concerned that 9 does not have the answer to hostile hacking and nobody has put my mind at rest about that but I simply have to have a version which actually works and I don't trust smaller companies to have the answer if Adobe doesn't (call me naive).

  • Report Viewer WebPart for Sharepoint - Printing (Unable to load client print control)

    Hi there,
I am running a report via the report viewer web part on a SharePoint page.  The report itself is working great.  But when I attempt to print it, I get a prompt to install something....and then it is followed up with "Unable to load client
    print control".
There are some posts out there about updating the a certain CU or to find the RSClientPrint cab and unloading the dlls into the system32 folder and registering it.  I've tried that but no go.
Anyone else encounter this issue?  If so, potential solutions?
    SP 2010 - 14.0.7221.5000
SQL Server 2008 R2 (Reporting Server)- 10.50.1617  (have tried updating to 10.50.6000.34)
    IE = 10.0.9200
And yes, I am running as local admin....so there shouldn't be any issue installing the active x component on IE.
    Thanks in advance,
    Eric

    Hi Eric,
According to your description, you can't load the print button in your sharepoint site. Right?
In Reporting Services, Each user who wants to use the print feature must download and install the ActiveX control that provides client print functionality. The first time a user clicks the
Printer icon on the report toolbar, the Microsoft ActiveX control is downloaded to the computer. After the control is downloaded, the
Print dialog box displays whenever the user clicks the Printer icon.
So in this scenario, please enable the setting Download signed
ActiveX controls in Internet Explorer and download it. Please follow the steps below:
    Click Tools -> Internet options.
Switch to the Security tab, select the Trusted sites zone, and then click
    Sites.
Type the URL of the SQL reporting server, click Add, and then click Close.
Click the Custom level button, scroll to the ActiveX controls and plug-ins
    node.
Click Enable for Download signed ActiveX controls, and then click OK.
Then we need to have the
    EnableClientPrinting is set to true.
In SharePoint Central Administration, click Application Management.
    Click Manage service applications.
Click the name of your Reporting Services service application, and then click
    Manage in the SharePoint ribbon.
    Click System Settings.
Select Enable Client Printing. The Enable Client Printing option is near the bottom of the page.
    Click OK.
    Reference:
Enable and Disable Client-Side Printing for Reporting Services
If you have any question, please feel free to ask.

  • Canon iR1025if is printing garbage with latest driver.  What am I doing wrong?

I have an iMac with OS X 10.9 installed on release day (10/22).  Ever since I upgraded I am not able to print "perfect" PDF files from Preview or Skim.  Files generated using LaTeX and some special fonts print "garbage" or blanks with a Canon iR1025if.
The printer was working fine under 10.8 and the (then) latest Canon driver.  After I upgraded to 10.9, I kept getting errors when I tried to print something, so I uninstalled printer and old driver, installed new driver, and reinstalled the printer (following directions found here in the Apple Support Cummunities).  I could then print again, but every time I use some different (math) fonts, such as Arev Sans, it either prints garbage, boxes or blanks instead of the text.  See the picture attached.  When the PDF is printed under Adobe Acrobat Reader, it comes out exactly as on screen.
Notice that the same PDF on screen is correct, while the printed version is full of garbage.  Other fonts generate similar problems.
Any ideas how to fix this?  I'd appreciate any help.
    malu

    Hello MLO_BR,
It looks like you are getting some anomolies when printing from these programs, and mulitple fonts are affected. I would recommend the troubleshooting found in this article named:
Troubleshooting printer issues in OS X
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3147
Follow these steps until the issue is addressed:
Make sure that the printer is powered on, has ink / toner, and that there are no alerts on the printer’s control panel. Note: If you cannot clear an alert on the printer's control panel, stop here and check the printer's documentation or contact the manufacturer for support.
Ensure the printer is properly connected to a USB port on the Mac or AirPort base station / Time Capsule. If the printer is a network-capable printer, make sure that it is properly connected to your home network.
Use Software Update to find and install the latest available updates. If an update is installed, see if the issue persists.
Open the Print & Scan pane or Print & Fax (Snow Leopard) pane in System Preferences.
Delete the affected printer, then add the printer again.
If the issue persists, try these additional steps:
Reset the printing system, then add the printer again.
If the issue still persists, reset the printing system again.  Download and install your printer's drivers. Then, add the printer again.
Contact the printer vendor or visit their website for further assistance.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

  • SUS - Some Clients Take a Long Time to Check for Updates

We have the newest XSERVE, running 10.6, with 12GB of RAM. We use it as our software update server and for some reason, some clients take a long time to check for updates. I'm talking anywhere from an 30 mins to an hour. I can't figure it out. Some clients are quick, some are extremely long.
Now if I tell the client to just check Apple for updates, it takes a few seconds.
    Can anyone offer any suggestions?
    Thanks.

After another restart, firefox has begun throwing errors when starting from terminal. the error reported is:
/opt/kde/bin/skim: error while loading shared libraries: libpng12.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
This is printed 5 times, then gives up and firefox loads quickly after. So this appears to be an issue with skim and libpng similar to other problems being reported.
Some research uncovered that skim is no longer supported and is part of my kdemod3 install, however until this update it was working fine under kdemod4.

  • IPrint Client: Printer Driver Profile Update

what would be the best way to Update a Printer Driver Profile with ZCM?
i published the Printer Policy with a new Version and checked "Update iPrint printer driver while installing the printer" for the Printer.
But this did not trigger the Update of the Device Settings.
However the User could delete the Device and after ZCM Agent refresh the Policy will install the missing Printer together with the Updated Profile.
    Two side notes about iprint:
    1. i set mistakenly install order to install iprint client before Novell Client on some Devices. This seems to lead to an authentication Prompt for logged users when the Printer Policy is about to install new Printers. This would not change if i update to the current Version 5.82.
btw. I prefer a Bundle to Update the iprint Client with 3 minutes delay after refresh just in case there is a printer Policy running. The Update will check \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Novell-iPrint Current Version as requirement.
    2. I need to give users write Acess to C:\NDPS to make Printer Policies work right?!
This MAYBE cosmetic only but... i sometimes see inconsistent Printer Names. There is a "translation" of Server-Names under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Novell-iPrint\Settings\Server Names\[Full qualified DNS server Name] to a short Server Name with TimeStamp.
Some Clients show the full server Name (ipp://...) others the nicer short-Name. Could not exactly reproduce but it seems that it resolve the short Name only if the local Admin installs the Printer.
    best regards
    Markus
