HP VECTRA

hi all,
I would like to install solaris 8 intel version on HP VECTRA VL400 DT PIII but I can't because when it tries the webstart installation it suddenly reboots.
are there any patches needed before the installation process?
also is it possible to run the installation process successfuly on HP VECTRA VL800 P4?
I wish to have a response ASAP.
many thanks

I have been unsuccessful installing, Solaris 8, Solaris 8 Early Access or Solaris 7 on a HP Vectra VL400 MT (933MHz P3 I think). Also unsuccessful was installing Solaris 8 Early Access or Solaris 7 on a HP Vectra VL420MT (1.6GHz P4). I was able to get Solaris 6 installed on a HP Vectra VL (not sure if there's a more specific model number, no markings on case, it's a P2-266) several years ago. I've done a lot of searching and from the best information I've found, it seems installing on an HP is chancy at best.
I would like to try the latest Solaris 8 (02/02 I believe) but I'm not willing to pay Sun for it since it seems doubtful it'll work on either of these HP's here. If I thought it would work, I would be happy to buy a copy. So, if you get it working on your HP, please let me know via email!

  • Solaris 8 on HP Vectra

I'd be most grateful if you could help me.
Will Solaris 8 run on my HP Vectra VE I8?
    Regards.
    Sergio.

HP's policy was never to certify their value Vectra line with Solaris Intel (their major customers wanted Kayak
etc so the focus was put there). Hence the Vl, VE series etc do not appear on the Hardware Compatibility
    List.
In spite of this it is conceivable that you can still install Solaris, but you might need to resort to 3rd party
video drivers etc to configure a complete system working the way you would expect. Best way is to try it
and report back with your experiences - and a detailed list of hardware in the machine if you run into trouble.

  • Interfacing Vectra XU-6/200, W2K SP4 and Scanjet 2P, difficulties.

This is a query for the long serving HP folks.
I am attempting to interface an HP Vectra XU-6/200 running under W2K SP4 and an HP Scanjet 2P, all legacy products.
The Vectra XU and the Scanjet 2P are interfaced via an HP adaptor pwa. Unfortunately the adaptor pwa does not have an HP product number attached, the only identifier is a paper label glued to the outside face of the installation bracket, the label reads " HP Scanjet scanner". The Vectra XU has three PCI slots and three ISA slots, its User Manual states that both the ISA bus and the PCI bus have 'Plug & Play' (P&P) capability. W2K of course has P&P capability.
The Vectra XU BIOS allows for two P&P settings, both of which I have tried, without success. The normal P&P mode is labelled 'Bootable' in the BIOS, the alternate method is labelled  'Full'.   Under 'Bootable' the P&P service does the complete job of interfacing all components, under 'Full' the BIOS initialises all components, but does not allocate IRQ's etc. that has to be done manually.
My problem is that the OS appears to be unable to recognise the adaptor card. I have tried installing the card after the driver, ( WIN 3 method), I have tried installing the adaptor card before the driver, (WIN NT/2K method) The Scanjet 2P User Manual discusses both methods. more or less, since the hardware  and software are claimed to operate on versions of Windows from WIN 3.1 to W2K.
To the best of my knowledge the adaptor card is functional, as is the scanner, I removed both  from my wife's old Vectra RS-25, where it was functioning quite happily under WIN 3.11. The Vectra XU has the optional second CPU and runs well under W2K SP4. Our faithfull old Vectra RS 25 suffered a HDD controller card failure after around twenty years of service.  I have beeen unable to find a replacement HDD controller card, so, sadly, I scrapped our faithfull servant!
I would appreciate it greatly if anyone is able to tell me how to solve this riddle? It is my suspicion that the problem lies in the adaptor card failing to provide identity information in a form recognisable by W2K. I have considered changing the Vectra OS back to WIN 3.11, but I'm not anxious to do that for the obvious reason of lesser capability

  • Interesting-Solaris7 Install Hangs-HP Vectra VLi8

Hi, I am having a HP Vectra VLi8 PC with Intel P3 550 MHz, 192 MB RAM, 13.5 GB IDE HDD, 40x CDROM drive. I am trying to install Solaris7 11/99 Intel Edition through Installation CD. After scanning the system configuration successfully, the Config. Asst. comes up with 3 choices(1.Interactive, 2.Jumpstart, 3.Webstart).
On selecting Option 1 (Interactive), it says <<booting solaris kernel/unix>>. After that, it never returns back.
I suspected the CDROM and CDROM Drive. But, the same CDROM is working on a DELL Optiplex G1 PC. Changed the CDROM Drive, Still it hangs.
Can anyone suggest me a solution for this issue?
    Thanks in advance,
    Arumugam

Try a different CD-ROM unit, (or get the latest version of the DCA diskette, and install from Software 1of2),
or install from the net. this is simple.
------ here the short short version:
you insert a cdrom containing software 1 of 2 into another solaris box
and you find the "setup_install_server" program
run that, to and create the "image" on say
    /var/tmp/solaris8image (careful it's like 700Mb)
    - you edit in the box where that image is, 2 files
/etc/ethers where you put a MAC ADDRESS and and the NAME of the machine to be installed.
    - then you edit /etc/hosts where you put the IP and NAME of the machine to be installed.
    - then you goto /var/tmp/solaris8image/Solaris_8/Tools
    - execute ./add_install_client i86pc NAME (machine to be installed name)
that will restart your inetd. and execute the bootparamd, which waits for a RARP and executes tftpd. (to give your target install box an IP basically)
then you need to make sure that the machine to be installed reboots, "wanting to boot from net", and I gather you can do this by breaking out of any cd installation procedure, and typing "break" to go into "ok prompt", then typing "boot net".
    good luck

  • HP Vectra VL400 series video drivers

We are trying to install Solaris 2.7 on the HP Vectra VL 400 series Pentium III. We cannot get the video driver configured during installation. Please help!!! Where do we go to get the most current video graphics driver.

    Hi:
Below is the link to the SATA AHCI drivers you need.  2nd download is for XP 32 bit.
You need to have the storage controller in the BIOS set to AHCI which is the default setting for your model, (or RAID if you intend to use 2 hard drives acting as one).
    https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=21408&lang=eng&OSVersion=&DownloadTy...
You can install the exact driver you need at the F6 prompt using a USB FDD (only a USB FDD will work).
You use the Up/Down arrow keys to scroll to and select the driver you need from the list on your floppy.
The exact AHCI driver you need for the chipset in your PC should be the Intel(R) Desktop/Workstation/Server Express Chipset SATA AHCI Controller.
For RAID you need the Intel(R) Desktop/Workstation/Server Express Chipset SATA RAID Controller.
You can confirm the correct AHCI driver you need if you still have access to your W8 OS, by looking in the device manager, click to expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers section, and you will see the name of the SATA AHCI controller listed there.
Or you can slipstream all of the drivers into a copy of your XP installation disk by reading the info at the link below (Intel Section).
Then read the downloadable document to slipstream all of the drivers.

Well, it's a laptop, so they're build in. But to be sure I tested in Win8 (it's a dualboot) and there it works.

  • Fitting ck-w7 car kit to vectra

    hi everyone
has anyone fitted a ck-w7 car kit to a 2005 holden vectra cdxi with standard head unit cdc40 . if so would like to know how to connect the ck-w7 through my stereo speakers. what do i have to join into, which wires from the ck-7w unit are used to connect. any help would be great.
thanks peterMessage Edited by vectra05 on 11-Nov-200710:41 AM

There are two ways of connecting on a vectra, if you have the pre wires telephone lead the remove the glove box and the loom will be taped to the bar next to the radio, you will need a loon adaptor to connect on to this loom, or you can buy a loom adaptor which connects to the back of the stereo, there is no ignition supply at the radio so you will have to pick up a supply at the fuse box on the end of the dash, black wire. I may add that if you do not know what you are doing then get a proffesional to do it, you can do a lot of damage very easily on modern cars.

I had similar problems several months ago. I suspect this happens when host pc does not have floppy drive(or bios somehow misreports it) as it was in my case. Solaris 8 seems to work fine in the same environment, so I keep using it for now. Possible workaround might be to use DCA from Solaris 8: Installation of Sol9 started just fine after I entered Sol8 DCA and asked it to boot from Sol9 CD.
Hope this problem will be fixed in subsequent Sol9 releases.

  • Does the iMac G5 get too hot?

    Greetings to all.
I would like to start a thread about the iMac G5 and heat. I found a few old threads, but I would like to bring that topic up again.
I have a 1st Generation iMac G5 (purchased end November 2004). For the second time since November 2004, it was defective and the Logicboard was replaced (so my Apple Dealer told me).
First time, in November 2005, the screen went pink. Second time, earlier this month, my Mac didn't boot anymore.
The full amount for the repair (including shipping to Apple (Belgium), work hours, etc.) was over 500.00 euro (about 700 USD for you, Americans).
I believe that the iMac G5 (at least: my 1st Gen one) is simply getting too warm.
The day before, I installed "Hardware Monitor". It gave the following (average) temperatures:
    CPU: 60.6 - 63.8° Celsius (141-164° F)
    HD: 57.5° C (135.5° F)
It is my opinion that the (my) iMac is getting too hot to be "healthy". I have 2 PC's, in which I installed extra fans (at the back and at the side). One of these, with an Athlon64 3000+ (1.8 GHz) and a 120 Gb Seagate Barracuda gives (average) temperatures for the:
    CPU: 36.5° C (97.5° F)
    HD: 26° C (78.5° F)
My second PC, an old (modded) HP Vectra, with an Intel P4 at 1.6 GHz and a 80 Gb Seagate Barracuda, gives as average temperature (HD only):
    HD: 37° C (98° F)
It may not be correct to compare my iMac with PC's - but harddisks are harddisks, wheather it is a Western Digital (250 HD in my Mac) or a Seagate (PC HD's), and it is only logical that a(n average) HD temperature of 57 degrees Celsius (128° F) in the long term can not be healthy, while the harddisks of my PC's are a lot, lot cooler.
The PPC, too, gets much hotter than my Athlon CPU (and the P4 most likely too).
Therefor: is my suspicion correct that the/my iMac G5 in general is getting too hot for its own good? Even though it may be summer here (Belgium), I still find such a difference in heat values between my iMac and my PC's not "right".
Both the times that my iMac was defective, the Logicboard was replaced.
Is it possible that in both cases heat is the problem (directly or indirectly) of the defects of my iMac?
Basically we have a desktop computer constructed like a laptop, with all the hardware stuffed together in a very tight space. Why did they not keep the heat issue more in mind, when the iMac G5 was designed?
I believe that the heat is a very negative factor in the/my iMac G5. If I will have to pay such a small fortune, every time my Mac breaks down, being a Mac owner will become quite expensive.
iMac G5 (PPC), 17-inch, Superdrive, Mac OS X (10.4.10) 1.5 GB RAM, 250 Gb Western Digital HD

iMac G5 (PPC), 17-inch, Superdrive,   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   1.5 GB RAM, 250 Gb WesternDigital HD

Your Mac should have been repaired under the Apple power supply or video and power issues as long as your serial numbers were covered.
As far as normal operating temps are concerned, my Rev A is at this moment, running at CPU T-Diode 144∘and my Hard Drive is at 128∘so your temperatures seem well within normal ranges.
Yes, the machines tend to run a bit hot, but as long as the ambient temperature is not too high, they are fine. The failures were originally cause by a bad batch of capacitors but since those have mostly been replaced, the machines are much more reliable.
Some people train a small fan on the back of the computer to keep it cool, that may help you.

  • I can't reinstall Windows XP

A Windows XP Pro installation on an old Vectra stopped working properly.  I decided to erase the hard disk and reinstall from an installation CD.  The PC booted to HP's splash screen.  The next thing I got was "Error loading the operating system."  I tried two different installation CD's but got the same result.  I took the CMOS area battery out and left it out for 30 minutes.  It made no difference.  I replaced the CD drive and tried again.  Again, it made no difference.  (I really don't know for sure if this drive is good.  It was working when I replaced it with a DVD drive in a different PC.)
I was advised to check the boot order.  This PC enters Setup via F2.  It enters the boot order setup via F8.  I tried F2.  I wound up with something I've never seen before: a Setup Password window that demanded a password.  I tapped "password."  I got "Wrong password, try again."  Next I tried F8.  It enumerated certain resources, all of which passed.  Then I got that Setup Password window.
    This really is mystifying.
I've installed XP on numerous PC's but never came across this.
Is there anything else I could try?

    Hi:
I don't know how the password got on there either. I wonder if removing the battery sets a default admin password.
In any event, you didn't mention what model vectra you have. I hope the link to the troubleshooting manual I have posted will work for you.
    http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/lpv06565/lpv06565.pdf
See page 31. There is a dip-switch labeled #5 and #6 that you have to flip to clear the CMOS and password. I think 5 clears both and 6 just clears the password. Anyway, please read it carefully and it tells you exactly what to do.
The only thing I can think of regarding reloading the OS is that the PC is hitting the HDD and not the CD-ROM.
Try tapping the F9 key at the HP welcome screen. That key normally presents you with a one time boot menu and from that, just select the CD-ROM drive.
