HP VSA On Dell R620 Raid Configuration

Good day,
Not sure if I am posting this in the right place. I am in need of assistance with setting up VSA on my Dell R620 server that has VMware Esxi 5.5. The server has 8 drives 600GB each. I would like to know the best way to configure RAID in the bios before installing Esxi and then the VSA VM.
I have never done anything like this before so any detailed help would be appreciated. If any other details are required please let me know. This is an urgent requirement from my Unviersity to test out VSA and the only tutorial I found is on youtube and deals with Esxi 4.0!
Thank you in advance

  • Loss of network connectivity at random times to guests and now hosts Server 2012 R2 Hyper-v on Dell R620...Guests virtual disks reside on a NAS.

We have set up 2 Hyper-v environments (Server 2012 R2 fully updated) on Dell R620's. The guest machines are configured do that they reside on a NAS (also a Dell R620 with server 2012). We are having an issue on both the environments where the guests will
lose network connectivity. The servers ran well for about 4 weeks and recently the guests started having issues and we have even had to reboot the host due to network connectivity problems.
We have 4 virtual switches set up. 1 connected to its own NIC. 1 for management and the 3 others for guests.
The 3 for guests are not configured to allow host OS sharing.
We do not have IP addresses on the NICS for the guests. Only on the management port. (all 1 GB NICS)
We have updated the firmware and drivers for the standard Broadcom Netxtreme cards.
We do not have Jumbo frames enabled because of some issues with switching compatability.
I've seen articles recommending to turn off TCP offloading and to disable virtual machine queues. Is this best practice?
Any thoughts of where I might look to help diagnose this issue?

    Hi ,
"1 connected to its own NIC. 1 for management and the 3 others for guests."
Also you mentioned that : " is only hosting these 24 VMs ".
First please try to disable the RSS in the property of the NICs for guests .
Then run powershell " Get-NetAdapterVMQ " to check the parameter "NumberOfReceiveQueues"  (NumberOfReceiveQueues – The number of queues that the NIC has available to use and assign to VMs,
the host and a default queue) .
If I understand correctly ,when you enable VMQ  the number of connected VMs on that NIC should not be more than the value of  "NumberOfReceiveQueues" -2 .
For details please refer to following link:

    Hope this helps

  • RAID configuration help request

    greetings
    this is my current situation.
my k8n neo2 fx MOBO failled and my power blew up, so i had a replacement mobo and power.
i flashed the mobo to the latest firmware 1.C and continued configuring my system.
in my previous installation, i had my two western digital running on the MOBO raid with winxp sp2 + all hotfixes
i attempted to configure the raid with the same settings,
    - enabled the raid device & selecting the disks that are made visible to the raid chips.
    - made sure that the disks are found on boot (setting to auto thou when configuring the raid it always sets the disks to none having to set it back to auto, a bios bug that hasnt been fixed at least since version 1.9)
    - made sure that the raid device is selected in the disk boot order
    - recreated the raid array and made sure that it is bootable (pressing B)
now the issue is that when i hav ethe mentioned raid configuration in place, the raid does not boot
i get that disk not found ctrl-alt-del
but when i turn of the raid chip feature from the bios and boot of the first disk, it boots fine but runs lously since the
    raid service deamon fails :P
any ideas on how this can be resolved? ive banged my head with this all day and i dont want to reinstall my **** OS :(
    regards
    Matice

i did brake and recreate the raid (not wiping the data of course ) but it didnt help, though i didnt try reordering the disks,
ill give that a try now.
as i said, when i disable the raid, the disk boot winxp fine, but xp is acting all bizare propably due to the failiure of the
raid service not running since the raid has been disabled..

can you boot from alternative location to see array is correctly assigned(etc: all data is there and so on...)
broke array and re-create it, but reverse HDD's position in array by adding into array. (1st, become 2nd, and 2nd become 1st)
    re-test.

  • RAID configuration on 760GMA-P34fx

I have 4 1TB SATA drives plugged into the SATAII motherboard connectors.
    Latest BIOS version.
In BIOS, I select Integrated Peripherals.
On-Chip ATA Devices->On-Chip SATA Controller [Enabled]
    RAID Mode                                                          [RAID]
F-10, save configuration changes and exit setup.  Machine reboots.
No RAID configuration prompts appear.  Nothing new has shown up in BIOS setup to configure the RAID.  No "ctrl-f" appears to configure RAID.
My question:  How do I configure the RAID?

No RAID option appears.  Ever.  Anywhere.  On no screen.  I only ever get "F11 for Boot options" and "Del for Bios Configuration".
I have also tried the 2TB Infinity boot option, but all I ever get from that is "no bootable devices found".
I may never again buy an MSI board considering how worthless the manual and online support has been.

  • Is there a way to run a external ssd with my mid 2011 iMac hdd in a raid configuration and basically have a fusion drive

is there a way to run a external ssd with my mid 2011 iMac hdd in a raid configuration and basically have a fusion drive

A Fusion Drive is not a RAID; it's a CoreStorage logical volume group. While it's technically possible to do as you suggest, there would be little or no benefit from it.

  • Cost of SATA HDs ordered with S10? RAID configuration cost?

I'm considering buying an S10. I notice there is a charge for setting up the RAID configuration.
Is that just a "service charge"? I can change the RAID configuration later if I need to do so correct?
Also I note that a 500Gb 7200 RPM SATA drive lists at $205. At NewEgg for example the 500Gb 7200RPM units rated at 3Gb/s transfer speed are $60 - $90 each depending on details (cache size etc...). Am I missing something that causes the ones shipped with the system to be so much more expensive?
    Thanks,
    Jim
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

mounting brackets will be included in the S10.   there will be blank, plastic "dummy" drives installed in any unpopulated drive bay to help with air velocity.   attached to these dummy drives will be the drive caddies that you need to install a drive.
RAID 5 requires all five drives to be the same or larger than the smallest drive size in the array.   if you install a 1TB drive into a RAID 5 array comprised of three 500GB drives then only 500GB of the 1TB drive will be used.   otherwise, there wouldn't be any redundancy on the second half of the 1TB drive.   hopefully that explanation makes sense.

  • VM Server installer does not recognize RAID configuration in Intel ESRT2

    Hello,
I'm having a big issue here trying to deploy my third Oracle VM Server.
    I have:
    - A Intel Server Board S3420GPLC
    - A Intel Xeon X3440 processor
    - 16GB DDR3 ECC Memory
    - Six 1TB Hard Drives
    What I'm trying to do:
    - Create a RAID array using Intel ESRT2 (Embedded Server RAID Technology II) using all the discs (done)
    - Install Oracle VM Server into the array
    - Install some VMs....
    The problems:
    - When I boot the VM Server installer from USB stick I got an error saying that there is not enought memory. This issue is solved by typing "linux mem=15GB"
    - I got a screen per disk warning me about that the discs need to be initialized and all the data will be lost
    - When I go to the disk partitioning screen all the disks are listed separated, the installer simply don't recognize the RAID configured before.
    What I already tryied:
    - Change the RAID controller from ESRT2 to Intel Matrix
    -> Didn't solve.
    - Create a Driver Disk with the disk images supplied by Intel here
-> I launch the installer using "linux mem=15GB noprobe=ata1 noprobe=ata2 ....". When Im asked by the installer to load the drivers it doesn't recognize the disk, so i couldn't load the drivers.
    Now, the questions:
    - Is there another driver I can use do make the vm server installer recognize the RAId configured?
    - Is there a better way to setup this server, considering that it needs to be "self contanied" (store and run vms)?
Edited by: xyp on 14/10/2010 11:37

    So...
    - I have installed VM Server into ordinary linux partitions on the first disk.
    - I have created a big partition in the first disc with the space not used for the VM Server
    - I have created five equal partitions on the other discs
    - I have configured software raid 10 using mdadm
Now the problem seems to be solved, i have a storage repository with almost 3TB and can deploy my VMs.
Unfortunatelly only my windows 2008 r2 hardware virtualized vm is working, the linux paravitualized guests not. but this new issue will be a subject for another topic.

  • Raid Configuration MCS 7845 (best practice)

I'm wondering what is the best practice for RAID configuration. Looking for examples of a 4 disk and 6 disk setups. Also, which drives to pull when breaking the mirror.
Is it possible to have a RAID 1+0 for 4/6 drives and have the mirroring set so that you would pull the top or bottom drives on a MCS 7835/7845?
I'm also confused that using the SmartStart Array Configuration I seem to be able to create one logical drive using raid 1+0 with only having 2 drives, how is that possible?
And links to dirrections would be appreicated.

ICM 7.0, CVP 4.x, CCM 4.2.3, unity, and the collaboration server 5.0 and e-mail manager options for ICM.
But to keep it simple let's look at a Roger set-up.
    Sorry for the delayed response.

  • Mac Pro RAID configuration advice needed to address photography workflow

I am a semi-professional photographer and I am moving off a Windows machine and over to a Mac Pro.
I am waiting for the new Mac Pro to arrive and have purchased (4) 500GB SATA drives to replace the 250GB drive the system will arrive with.
I am considering setting up drive #1 as a stand alone boot drive. The second and third drives would be set up in a RAID 0 config and the 4th drive set up as a RAID 1 drive which would mirror the content on my RAID 0 set of drives to automatically backup the content on drives 2 & 3.
I think it would be beneficial if I describe my image processing workflow briefly so that you can understand why I am considering this RAID configuration (I've never set up a RAID configuration in the past so this is all new to me).
    Image Processing Workflow
It isn't uncommon for me to return from a photo shoot with an 8GB Compact Flash card full (approx 750 8mb RAW files).
    1) I plan on uploading my card to the boot drive (#1) where I would hold them temporarily.
    2) I would sort thru the images and trash 80% immediately in most cases.
    3) Next I would open up the "keepers" and do the initial post processing in Adobe RAW and save them to drives 2 & 3 (the RAID 0 set).
    4) Further post processing (the heavy lifting and the most taxing operations in Photoshop and associated filters) would take place as I access these files from the RAID 0 set of drives.
    5) All of my files would be mirrored to drive 4 as I work them. Once post-processing is complete I would copy the files from drive #4 (RAID 1)to an additional external 500GB drive for archiving purposes and then eventually delete the files from drive #1 and the RAID 0 set.
    6) Once drive #4 (and the external drive) is nearly filled I would pull both and archive them and replace both with fresh drives.
Is there anything wrong with taking this approach? Can a single drive be set up in a RAID 1 configuration to mirror a set of drives in a RAID 0 configuration?
Is there anything else I should be considering?
Thanks for any assistance you guys can provide! I appreciate it!!

For the purposes of 500GB drives in RAID, I would go with WD RE2. they format to 465GB and performance falls off @ 65% and beyond anyway.
I even "short-stroke" drives to just 60% and then stay within 1/3 full - if I want to insure the maximum I/O.
Memory: 4GB is pretty much minimum but using more than 8GB isn't efficient. Ideal: 4 x 2GB.
Shame that the Hitachi 1TB drive costs over $399 for now, fast and might be better than 10K Raptor. There are also 750GB drives for $249, but the RE2 isn't quite ready to ship.
Never want to get into using 75% or more usually, though large (8-20 drives) RAIDs can hold sustained I/O for video editing and multiple streams.
One 750GB or 1TB (930GB formatted, 800GB "usable") might make sense.
How about a SATA drive case w/ hot-swap. Think of 1TB "floppy" if you will :-)) Unlimited archiving of projects.
All you want is an inexpensive eSATA 1x 2-channel PM controller and any cases. Two drives that you can use drive trays as needed.
there are also 'spare' drive sleds if you want to have the option of popping a drive out, and use it internally. $29 each or $49 a pair.

Vista 64-bit can or does work quite well now on Mac Pro... if you ever get into a jam and just need to. SP1 by end of the year will even have more support for UEFI 2.0 (Apple uses Intel EFI 1.1).

  • Which RAID Configuration for my WD "My Book Mirror Edition"?

About to reformat my WD "My Book Mirror Edition" to use on my iMac.  I hope to also install on my iMac "Virtual Box", "VM Fusion", or "Parallels"  and then run a few windows products.  Which RAID  configuration should I choose in the WD "drive configurations" box?

If I were you I'd run any Virtual Machine directly on your iMac, not on a "WD My Book Mirror Edition", in particular not when connected through USB 2.0.
To store data, the WD is fine.
    For the RAID options:
RAID 0 ("striping") : if you want something fast (insofar this is possible with a USB connection). Note that when one of your disks fails you can say goodbye to all your data.
RAID 1 ("mirroring"): more safe. If one disk fails, the data are recoverable as they are on the other disk as well.  Disadvantage is you get only half the storage capacity compared to RAID 0.
Oh. my personal recommendation: RAID 1 is not an alternative to making a backup. So whatever option you choose: if you store valuable data on the disk that are nowehere else: back them up!
    On formats:
HFS+ : definitely recommended if you only use the RAID array on the Mac.
FAT 32: if you also use it on a Windows machine. Note that files cannot be larger than 4 GB in this case.
    Hope this helps.

  • Best Raid Configuration for a 8-1tb hhd server

    Hi All,
I have been trying to figure out what would be the best raid configuration for my Windows 2012 essentials server. So I was wondering if I could get some advise on this. Here is what I would like to get out of this configuration.
I would like to split the 8-1tb drives into 2 VHD one with about 300gb for the OS to be installed on, and the rest to be use  for storage. I want like to have good redundancy, fairly good read & write capabilities.
I will be using this server for a Small Web Page and Game Hosting, Email Exchange, Critical Application hosting.
I would like the ability to enlarge the overall raid storage by swapping out my 1Tb drives with 2Tb or larger as the need for more storage arises.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
    Thanks

You may be better of using Storage spaces and not using raid at all.

  • Error in RAID Configuration

Now I am receiving this message: Your device My Passport (S/N: ***************) has RAID configuration issues. Please launch the WD Drive Utilities software to get more information. My options are to click on run wd drive utilities which i uninstalled...

Am experiencing exactly the same problem that e_silio describes on my MacBook Pro (late 2008 running Yosemite 10.10.4). I also have a DROBO (a "better-than-RAID" backup system) attached to Firewire port on which I have my Time Machine and an Archive partition. With the WD software installed the drive mounts for about 10 seconds then dismounts and the LED goes off. With the WD software uninstalled the drive mounts, then dismounts but LED continues powered (blinking), and the "Error in RAID Configuration" popup displays as already described. However, when I dismount the DROBO, uninstall the WD software <reboot>, the drive stays mounted!  BUT... When I install the WD Drive Utilities, let the app update to the current version (2.0.2.18 May 19, 2015), and run the "Quick Drive Test", THEN the drive dismounts. Now, disconnect the drive and re-connect: it remounts four about a minute and then dismounts again. Uninstall WD Drive Utilities, reconnect the drive, then the "Error in Raid..." message returns. (The DROBO is still disconnected from the computer). It is quite frustrating to need to fuss with such a basic device.

  • Need Help W/ Raid Configuration

I NEED HELP W/ MY RAID CONFIGURATION.
    I HAVE THE K7N2 DELTA-ILSR MOBO W/ A XP2600+, I HAVE TWO 40 GIG HARDDRIVES THAT I WANT TO RAID 0 TOGHTER.
I HAVEN'T FOUND IN THE MANUALL HOW TO SET UP THE RAID ARREY, I DONT NO HOW TO SET THE DRIVER AS FAR AS SLAVE/MASTER SETTINGS, WITCH ONE NEEDS TO GO TO WITCH CHANNEL ( PRIMARY/SECONDARY/CS).
    - EVERY TIME THAT I SET IT UP THE ARREY IS SHOWING ONLY 1 DRIVE, I BELIVE THAT RAID 0 SHOULD HAVE BOTH OF THE DRIVES AS 1 BIG DRIVE, CAN SOME ONE HELP ME W/ INSTARUCTIONS HOW TO CREATE THIS ARREY?
    thanks guys

I had RAID 0 set on my system. I used the MSI Live Update software to update my RAID controller because it said it needed it. It hung up in the middle of the update, so I let it sit for 24 hours. Finally I rebooted, & now it won't even see the drives. If you go with RAID 0, back up your data, and keep it backed up!!! I will say this, while it worked, it was really really fast!!! In order to make my RAID work (while it lasted) I used two SATA drives. I believe you can also use one ATA & 1 SATA instead of two SATA drives. If you use 1 ATA drive, set it to master & connect to IDE 3. This will be the only drive on that cable. During the boot up, you have to follow the prompt & press to enter the FastBuild (tm) Utility. Once there, you can choose Auto Setup & it will do the work for you. I must re-iterate, KEEP YOUR DATA BACKED UP!!!!!! I hope this helps. Good luck!

  • Are the Mac Mini Servers setup in a Raid configuration?

Are the new mini servers set up in a raid configuration?

Out of the box the mini comes without Raid. You have two identical HDs of 500Gb.
I have just set it up as Raid1. You can't do this when you use the startup disk from the mini. And as you don't have a Superdrive ... you need to be creative. You need another Mac with Firewire.
Step 1: Start the Mini in Target Mode. Press the T during start. In a few seconds the firewire logo will appear on your screen.
Step 2: Go to your second Mac. Connect the firewire cable between second Mac and Mini.
Step 3: On the second Mac start the disc utility. The two identical drives on your mini will show. Create a new Raid set (mirrored = Raid 1). Include both drives. Confirm the warning that all data on the mini will be lost.
Step 4: Make sure your second Mac has CD/ DVD sharing option installed. This is tou use the superdrive to install OS X Server on the mini.
    Step 5: Shutdown both Macs
Step 6: Start your second Mac in target mode. Make sure the firewire cable is still connected.
Step 7: Start the Mini with the option key pressed.
Step 8: Insert the OS X Server install disc in your second Mac.
Step 9: wait till the drive logo apears om the Mini. Continue the install. Will take about an hour.
    Good luck
