HP w2408 no menu or inputs
I have a w2408 monitor that has been working but suddenly stopped. The display seems to be functioning because when I turn it on I see "monitor going to sleep", but pressing the menu button no longer brings up the menu and none of the inputs are working.
Is this a repairable failure? By me or official HP service?

I understand that you are getting a message that the monitor is going to sleep.
Remove the power cord from the monitor and hold down the power button for 15 sec.
This will reset the monitor.
Do the same thing to your tower.
You may also want to open the computer up and reseat the memory and the graphics card.

Yosemite menu bar, input source Greek flag removed. How to get it back?
In the new OS X Yosemite, the menu bar input source country flag has been removed for some countries. The Greek flag got removed, while the disputed "Macedonian" flag is intact. Apple seems to have been gradually replacing flags with alphabetic symbols wherever possible. Chinese and Japanese have been this way for quite a long time, and in Yosemite I count 30 keyboards (including Greek), nearly half the total, without the flag. This is harder to do for Macedonian, which is one of many countries using the Cyrillic alphabet.
The easiest way to get the Greek flag back would be to download the app Ukelele, which includes copies of the Greek keyboard and the old flag icon, which you can install and use instead of Apple's.

Menu bar clock and menu bar input menu disappear
Every time I reboot the menu bar clock and the menu bar input menu ("the flag") disappear. I have to re-tick the options in the System Preferences (Date & Time > Clock > Show the date and time; International > Input Menu > Show input menu in menu bar). However, after the next reboot they're gone again. What can I do to keep them there permanently?
You may need to try trashing the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist.
This can be found in HD/User/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
Just delete it and reboot.
Then try to set the new preferences. -
AutoSuggest Menu On Input Focus?
I currently am using Spry's autosuggest widgets on various
text inputs. Its convenient in that I can give the user the
flexibility of typing whatever they want (the html text input) but
provide a list of suggestions for pre-existing categories (the
autosuggest widget). Its the best of an html selector and text
input put together.
However, I can't seem to get the autosuggest widget to
provide the drop down list of options as soon as the text input
gains focus on the page. Even when setting the minCharsType setting
to 0 I have to enter at least one character before I get the
autosuggest drop down.
Ideally what I'd like to happen is that as soon as a person
click into the text input with the mouse or tabs in from another
field the autosuggest presents the user with all possible
suggestions, updating per character as it currently does
afterwards.
How do I get the autosuggest widget to appear when its text
input gains focus?

Keyboard Viewer does not appear in menu bar input menu...help with 10.4.9
When I click on the flag in my menu bar, I have two options (Show/Hide Input Source Name and Open International Preferences). Is there any way to test the special characters on my keyboard if there is no keyboard viewer or keycaps application? Thanks very much.

I need more INPUT (not MENU) languages in my E90!
Though E90 Communicator is awesome in majority of functions, usability and comparatively perfect in production quality, it lacks some features that I as business-user definitely need.
The most disappointing issue for me is the language issue. While the "normal" phones have 6 to 8 languages pro firmware/product code, the E90 has only 3!!! (Maybe 4 in APAC region but i do not care.)
I'll try to explain shortly. As a businessman who lives in Germany and is a native Russian-speaker, I have a LOT of partners/clients/friends who do prefer to have a communication profile with me in Russian. I have almost the same amount of people with whom I need to communicate in German or French. The tragic truth is that I cannot approach this with the actual firmware situation on E90.
If I would buy my Nokia E90 in Russia, I would get the predefined languages of English, Russian and Ukrainian. That is nice, but in this case I cannot write in German as it should be written, saying with Ö, Ä, Ü, ß and so on. I also could not use some of the French special characters. If I would use E90 only as a SMS machine, it might be OK. But I use it more likely as a travel PC replacement the device pretend to be, so I use e-mail and document editing, where the lack of those characters are intolerable.
Besides all, I live in Germany and am a client of German service provider, so why should I probably buy the device outside of Germany? So think I and so I doing, saying I renewed my service contract and bought the E90.
In German firmware I got another three (!!!) languages: German, English and Turkish. Wonderful. I may speak out about the pure discrimination from the Nokia side: in Germany we have the same amount of Russian speakers as Turkish fellow ones, both about 8,000,000 persons each. ;-) So why Turkish and not Russian, Italian or French? Every of those "communities" has equal rights, am I right?! Hei, Nokia! Do you hear my voice?!
Is it really so hard to understand, that an ULTIMATE BUSINESS SOLUTION as E90 definitely would be preferred by the people, who really use it - really intensive - as a communication device?! Is it really hard to understand, that thousands of them would get e-mails and documents while on the road that definitely need to be urgent answered some other language than 3 preinstalled?! Should I change the firmware of my phone every time I need to answer e-mail in French or edit the financial contract for my Russian partner?!
Ridiculous and disappointing - what else should I say?! Especially because I know, that the situation as easy to fix from the Nokia side as a single mouse click.
I am sure there are people reading and writing to this Forum who needs for example Chinese Mandarin and German, or Hindi and Farsi, or Arabic and Spanish simultaniously. There is no way to understand why it is impossible to choose the INPUT languages - I do NOT speak about the MENU languages and never pretend to.
So, because this Forum is Nokia's piece of land and Nokia has kindly allowed us to cry out here what I do really appreciate, I want definitely get the answer to following questions:
1) Is it possible to add some INPUT (once again - NOT menu, just INPUT) languages to E90 firmware?
2) If yes, when?
3) If not, what is the reason? The reason - please, no "technical excuses", because I am not that stupid, OK? ;-)
We are living in such a damn globalized world, aren't we? So let's be really globalized and let's help us ourselves to get out the most from this.

Once again: I do not pretend to have any other MENU language - I simply do not need it. But the possibility to choose more INPUT language is simply and quickly to add, that is what I am asking for.
Maybe your statistic research is right, I do not want to argue with you. More than that, this is exactly I expected as an excuse option: "Marginal request". But no, it is not. The device would probably have higher customer interest when the free input would be represented.
Your advice to use laptop instead of E90 is highly appreciated, but it is not unique enough to be accepted "as is". ;-) The idea of E90 as well as previous communicators was to give the customer an option to leave her/his laptop at home and make a 1 or 2 day business trip as lite as possible in every meaning of the word "lite". I have 2 laptops already, 1 Panasonic for traveling and IBM Z61p Workstation as a desktop replacement. I should say that Panasonic, while being one of the best travel-oriented devices on the market, with its almost 2 Kilo travel weight and about 1 minute power-up/power-down time is completely insufficient as a communicator replacement. In addition to it you need a businesscard-scanner and a digicam, you are constantly out of power and so on. It is or will be the same story with UMPC. The only option until now was HTC/Qtek 9000, the most powerful and well-equipped device on the market. But it is completely useless as a phone and its camera is a disaster, so I switched to E90 because of its awesome usability as a phone, a digicam and as a communicator simultaneously just because I HATE to carry on 12 hours a day here and there a 5 Kilo bag with laptop, phone, camera, cables, batteries and other damned stuff around. I am just SICK and TIRED of this and I dreamed about the device that can make free from all that - for YEARS!!!
I remember my conversation with Nokia people at its CeBIT Stand in late 1990-es - the concept was already here, but the materialization of my dreams took Nokia R&D almost a decade. And now, when it is already in my hands, it lacks such a damn little thing to be as perfect as possible! ;-)
I am not that crazy - "perfect" does not mean really perfect. Of course there are and there would be minor and major bugs with later fixes and improvements. Because of the possibility of fixes and improvements I insist on one of the most critical for me. I understand as well, that it needs neither additional research nor hardware changes. All you need to to do is a little software module to be added and/or replaced. The Occam Razor Rule is still in my mind. ;-) -
UCCX 9.0 during prompt menu dial extension any time

I need dial the internal extensions in any time within the script.
Currently the call enters to the script and after welcome message there is a step "GET DIGIT STRING" so that the person that calls enter the four digits of the extension known. This step have four seconds of timeout.
Subsequent to step "GET DIGIT STRING" is located the step "MENU" with 4 choices but we is happening that when the caller dials, for example, the number 2, the system takes it as if outside within the menu and calls are crossing to other option and the call is redirected to internal extensions which starting for 2XXX.

Database output into menu ring

I'm doing a application where the input of a menu ring needs to be the output of a database query when the VI has already launched (real-time).
my database for now, just has two fields: id and transducer name. i have no trouble getting those values from the db. my problem is that the menu ring input needs to be done using the property node (stringsandValues[]). I've tried to construct an array of 2D but i keep getting error of mismatched types.
I really don't know what else to try. I would like if somebody could make a small example in constructing the type of data that i need or point me to somewhere where that is explained.

PS: does anybody know how to convert a whole column of dynamic variant to data. In my program I'm converting each value at a time in a cycle.Just to clarify, the values are U16 by default, but of course you can change the representation if the ring. In this case the input should match the ring representation.
You only need the "Strings And Values" property if your values are arbitrary. If they are just 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, ... etc. you can write the "strings" property as 1D array of strings. It's simpler.
Anyway, to create the correct "String and Values" input, you could use something like the two alternatives in the attached image, the example at the bottom uses a 2D array of strings, transpose as needed.

Why is the greek flag (input source) removed in mac os 10.10?
The flag is replaced with the letter λ. Is this a feature? Is it somehow helpful to someone who wants to write greek? Such an omission is at least offending...

I have Win7 64 bit running iTunes 10.5. When I import a CD and click on the "Get Info" context menu item for the CD drive item on the left side of the window, the expected context menu and input boxes appear. When I type anything into any of the available input boxes, iTunes immediately throws a fail exit to Windows. Here are relevant screen shots:

So far Microsoft hasn't notified me of any solutions to this failure.
This info needs to get to Apple, but I am not paying to give them information to fix their problems!

PS: As a work around, I can highlight the entire CD worth of tracks and edit the common information in the Get Info function at that level... Still, iTunes should not be throwing program failure exceptions in any case. It is especially annoying on such common functions. One might have expected a more thorough testing program prior to general release.
DVHThanks for your response. I attempted to do that, but I couldn't find any way to access the configuration for the Zhone router. Typing the IP address into my web browser's address bar only resulted in "page could not be found" or "page timed out", etc. I called tech support at Northstate, who likewise suggested that the Zhone router should be set to bridge mode and the AEBS set to router mode since it would be easier for me to configure the AirPort. After wrangling a bit with them over my inability to change any settings for the Zhone, they sent a technician over. He messed around with the Zhone, apparently putting it in bridge mode, and we managed to get the AirPort to work without any double NAT errors. I reset the AirPort and created a new configuration file. Unfortunately, when I went to the Advanced/Port Mapping menu and repeated the original steps to forward port 7777, tests at www.whatsmyip.org still returned "timed out". The technician said he wasn't knowledgable enough about Apple products to assist me any further and suggested I call their tech support or visit the nearest Genius Bar. So that's about it. Any other ideas?

I was wondering if somewho can tell me, how I can type "š" with englis keyboard layout, because when I have restart iMac, layout was changed back to english (from Slovak) and now I cant start Mac OS X, cause in my login is "š"
Start with the Apple menu in the upper left of the Menu Bar and select System Preferences. On the System Preferences pane on the top row is the UN flag icon. For Tiger (OS-X 10.4) it was called "International". Click to take you to the Language Options:
The sub-menu called "Input Sources" (as you can see from the above screen shot) will take you to the panel that I referred to in the previous response. If you don't find your language listed then click on the "Edit List at the bottom left of the "Language" sub-menu. Once you make a change in either one of these places you will be given a notice to tell you that the change will be reflected the next time you restart your Mac or the next time that you log in to your account. If you are the only user and do not have another account on your Mac then the restart option will be your method. There is no need to do this procedure from the install DVD. -
Can't record into Logic through the built-in mike
Hi guys, just faced a strange thing in Logic 8, want to record my voice through my MacbookPro's internal mike, so in Audio preferences I've put an in-built input, in System preferences put input and output to in-built speakers and mike, but I can't move the track level meter in Logic with my voice at all, and there's no waveform, no sound is going inside, i got just an empty audio region, while in the System's preferences window the level meter moves when I'm saying sth...What can it be?Anyone faced the same?

it's the 1st on the drop down menu in Input Device Logic's Audio prefs.

Suggestions for Safely Installing Snow Leopard
Many users seem to be having problems upgrading to Snow Leopard. Here is a suggested installation procedure to minimize problems:
1. Repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Make a cloned backup of your startup system to a freshly formatted drive - external or internal.
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means your extra internal or external backup drive.
Source means your current startup drive.
3. Upgrade to Snow Leopard on the backup drive.
4. After upgrading to Snow Leopard restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Snow Leopard drive and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
After booting into Snow Leopard you can check everything out to be sure everything is working properly. If you have any problems you cannot resolve then simply restart from your Leo system on your regular startup volume.
When you install Snow Leopard I suggest that you first disable all third-party startup and login items, third-party contextual menu items, input managers, preference panes, and Internet plug-ins as many may be incompatible. During installation do not touch the computer except to reply to a dialog. I did as you suggested - repair the hard drive and permissions, then created a clone by making a new partition (Macintosh HD_2) and installed SL on that, and it all went fine
However, I now have my active SL installation on a the partition called Macintosh HD_2, and I still have all the old OSX install on the original Macintosh HD. The system is def running on SL, loaded from HD_2.
My question is, can I just delete the original OSX install, and if so, do I just delete that partition, to recover the disk space? I presume I can just extend HD_2 to gobble up the available space when Macintosh HD is deleted?
(Macintosh HD and Macintosh HD_2 are of course partitions on the integral hard drive)

Help needed with printer settings for wired ethernet connection
I'm hoping someone can help me with a network printing issue. I have a large format color laser printer (Tektronix Phaser) and since moving to OS 10.6 I can't figure out how to configure the printer so that the system sees it. I have a simple wired ethernet network with a couple of Macs and a couple of printers. All devices are connected via a switch. When using earlier OSs I was able to connect to the Phaser using Ethertalk. Obviously this is no longer supported and I can't figure out how to set the printer so the OS can see it. I have lots of options which can be turned on or off and in some cases set up in other ways: Ethertalk, IPX, Netware, TCP/IP, DNS, LPR, HTTP and remote internet printing, I've tried messing with these but the result is always the same--system doesn't see the printer. Currently Ethertalk is on, IPX and Netware are off, TCP/IP is on, DNS and LPR are on, as are AppSocket, HTTP, FTP and remote internet printing. I can change the IP address but no matter what address I've tried I cannot ping the printer. (I'm using a Gutenprint driver for this printer.)
I don't really know enough about all this to get anywhere and I haven't been able to find help anywhere even from tech friends. Xerox won't help me and neither will Apple. Any help would be appreciated. I can supply more detail on specifics where necessary. Thanks, BobOld Phaser models may becoming more and more difficult to use, but you can give this a try.
1. Configure the printer via front panel to use TCP/IP and enable DHCP if it's supported. If not then you will need to configure an IP address for the printer together with your local network's mask, and gateway IP address. Except for the first the others will be provided by opening Network preferences to see what those settings are. The printer's IP address needs to be set somewhere within the range of IP addresses your router provides locally.
2. You need the PPD file required for your printer. If you have the Phaser driver installer you can use it to install the PPD or you can extract the specific PPD from the installer package. This part is tricky because I don't know where you may find the driver now if you don't have the installer. The older installers can be accessed through the Finder by selecting the package then CTRL- or RIGHT-click and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. You can then rummage through the package to search for the PPD for your printer. Then navigate to the /Library/Printers/PPD/Contents/Resources/ folder and drop the PPD file inside.
3. Open Print & Fax preferences and click on Add [+] to add a new printer. Click on the IP icon in the toolbar. Select Line Printer Daemon - LPD from the Protocol drop down menu. Input the IP address you assigned the printer in the Address field. You can file in the optional fields that follow. Then from the Print Using drop down menu locate the listing for your printer and select it.
