HP won't boot up after Windows 8.1 update

I downloaded Windows 8.1 on Friday night, finally was able to install it on Sunday afternoon, don't know why it took so long. Regardless, the computer installed 8.1 and restarted itself. After booting back up, the computer would be at the desktop (not the start screen). An error message popped up that started with "the instruction at 0x7904640c referenced memory..." I didn't get the full message, but the end of the message said to click ok to terminate the program. The only button to click was the ok button. I click this and the screen would flicker in and out. I continued to do this for a while. I performed a hard shutdown, and as it started to boot up, the computer took forever. After letting it do its thing for about 12 hours now, it's still on the booting up screen with the "Preparing Automatic Repair" and the loading circle moving dots.
Anyone have any idea why this is happening?

Hi Ryan44,
Thank you for your post, I will do my best to assist you!
I understand that after upgrading to Windows 8.1, you received an error and clicked OK to terminate the program. Once you did, the screen flickered in and out. You did a   shut down and restarted the  notebook, but it has been stuck on Windows Repair for 12 hours.
I would try a forced reset first.Performing a Hard Reset or Forced Reset
If this did not help, I  suggest you do a recovery and then retry the upgrade as the repair does not seem to be working. Here is some documentation to assist you with this process.
Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 8).
During this process you will receive a prompt to backup your personal files. If you have not done a backup yet, I suggest you do one now to prevent data loss.
Restoring Files that were Backed Up Using HP Recovery Manager (Windows 8).
Here another one to aid with updating to Windows 8.1 again.
Updating Windows 8 to 8.1
I hope this helped.

  • Ideapad S450 booting problem after windows 8.1 update

Hi.. I have a Lenovo Ideapad S450 with windows8. Yesterday while updating to Windows 8.1, it got shut down. When I switched it ON, it started booting continuously. All it displays is 'Lenovo' logo with a progressing bar, shut downs and starts booting again. Please help me if there is any way to sort it out other than System restoration. Thanks.

The point is that the touchpad of Qosmio X70-A series supports some additional features.
One of the features is the Gesture feature. I would recommend disabling it.

Mac OSx won't boot up after update to 10.6.7?

    Hi Mike
This is called a kernel panic, similar to s 'blue screen of death' on Windows. When you say you reinstalled 3 times, do you mean the OS or the Update?
When does this kernel panic appear? You may have a hardware issue if it's happening on boot.

  • My 2006 iMac running Snow Leopard won't boot even after erasing and re-installing Snow Leopard (via my MacBookPro), either from the HD or DVD drive.  Can't get it to run Hardware Test.  Disk Utility says disk OK - files are there. What can I do?

My 2006 iMac running Snow Leopard won't boot even after erasing and re-installing Snow Leopard.   I erased and re-installed by putting the iMac in Target Disk mode and usin my MacBookPro as the host.  But after numerous attempts I still can't get it to boot either from the HD or DVD drive. I just get the white screen after the wheel stops spinning.  I can't get it to run Hardware Test - just get the white screen.  If I use Disk Utility via my MBP it says the disk appears OK. All the Snow Leopad files appear to have been installed. What can I do?

Perhaps you installed the wrong version OS X onto the iMac, you can't use the disk from another Mac.
    clean the disk.
If it's not working then use this method to create a bootable 10.6 USB from the iMac machine specific 10.6 disk or the 10.6.3 retail disk on your other Mac, use it to boot the iMac with.

  • OS X won't boot but the Windows 7 partition works perfectly?

About two days ago, I switched on my iMac only to find it was creating a very loud fan noise and both the windows partion and OS X Snow leopard were not working, they were both freezing on load up and just generally having prolems. After a couple of minutes or so (after many reboots), windows 7 started working properly again. I haven't tried to use the OS X untill recently. My problem is that OS X probably hasn't been working since the loud fan noise that day. It won't finish loading up, it gets to the stage where the apple sign comes up and the swirly circle underneath appears, then it seems to load endlesslyc(I have left it like that for many hours and nothing has happened). Booting up from the disk at the boot up preferance window also doesnt work, it just goes back to the circle and logo screen. What can I do?

  • Unable to boot from ODD or USB after windows 8.1 update on P850-31L

    Hi
I just updated a P850-31L to windows 8.1 from windows 8 through the windows store.
Before the update I was able to boot from a USB drive by pressing F12 during start up.
After the update I was no longer able to boot from the USB drive. Selecting the USB drive by changing the boot order in BIOS setup via F2 or by pressing F12 no longer works.
Booting from ODD is also no longer possible.
The BIOS version is 6.70 and does not allow secure boot to be disabled. However the DVD and the USB stick I tried are signed Ubuntu 12.10 which worked prior to the upgrade. Fastboot in windows 8.1 is disabled.
This would then appear to be a bug in the Toshiba BIOS? Or has the windows 8.1 updated the BIOS or the EFI boot partition in such a way as to override the BIOS setting? Really stuck here, doesn't seem to be much information about.
Any thoughts or assistance would be very much appreciated!
    Thanks
    Michael
Update: I just tried booting from the Toshiba windows 8 recovery DVD and this no longer works either.

    OK I fixed this.
Firstly it's worth noting that it is possible to to disable secure boot in the 6.70 BIOS.
However this option is only available when the user password is not set in the security menu.
After enabling or disabling the password a reboot is required to make the secure boot enable/disable option either available or unavailable.
That's good I suppose as I guess it may prevent secure boot from being disabled when the machine is running. However this does not appear to have been related to this issue.
I selected the 'reset to factory defaults' option on the exit menu.
The machine was then able to boot from USB and DVD. The boot order was also respected.
Perhaps the windows 8.1 upgrade somehow invisibly corrupted the BIOS settings. Or maybe it was just a stranage co-incidence that the BIOS corrupted itself during the install. Either way that factory reset fixed it.

  • Arch doesn't boot up after Windows Update on Surface Pro 3

    Hi all,
I am using a Microsoft Surface Pro 3. I have a persistent installation of Arch on a USB drive. It works very well on the Surface. The only problem I am facing is, whenever I run Windows Update, I am not able to boot from the USB Arch installation after that. It just guides me to the BitLocker recovery page. The only way to boot from the USB drive is to install GRUB on the EFI partition again. It'll work until the next Windows Update, but then again the same thing repeats itself. I am stumped as to how to resolve this.
Disabling BitLocker doesn't work too, as the system then boots straight into Windows instead of going to the BitLocker recovery page.

parag14 wrote:Would efibootmgr help in any way?
You can check the boot order by using:
    efibootmgr
You can set the boot order using:
    # efibootmgr -o xxxx,yyyy,zzzz
Replace the letters with the bootnumbers given by the first command.
You can probably use this method to reset Arch at the top of the list rather than re-installing GRUB.

  • Lenovo G780 will not boot up after windows update

My friend's G780 will no longer boot up after installing a windows update, one for which she cant remember, and ever since she updated it, the lenovo boot screen will appear, then turns black, and stays black. It will, occasionally, give her the option to go to the "windows did not boot properly" screen, giving her options to refresh the pc, restore the pc, advanced options, etc.
Changing boot priorities, using "repair" did not work, and neither did trying to find a system image.
She is unsure what to do, and I am as well.
    Any recomendations?

    hi connorjacob,
    Thanks for Posting!
If you can try and get the screen again where it gave you options like Refresh PC,  Restore the PC and Advanced option.
Choose Advanced option to pull up   a new page with options
With the options, You can try:
Try Selecting System Restore and see if you can find a restore point prior to to insalling the said updates.
Select Windows Start up Settings and Find two options that can help
                  - Boot to Safe Mode (See if the computer boots in safe mode)
                  - Last Known good configuration
    Let me know your findings
    Hope this helps

  • Computer won't boot up after installing SIIG card

    Hey Everyone,
I having problems with my SIIG FireWire 2-Port PCIe DV card that I've installed into my PowerMac G5 Quad. With the card installed the computer will not boot up, which is the same thing that happened with my previous two models of the card. I installed a new card yesterday and it worked fine all day, but after shutting the computer down for the night and then restarting it in the morning I am experiencing the same problems. The light on the front of the computer turns on, but the screen does not, and after about a minute a loud fan noise comes one. I have the card installed in Slot 2. In Slot 1 I have a ProTools HD card and in Slot 3 I have an AJA Kona LHE card. Even with all of the cards removed the computer still does not boot up. Anyone seen this problem before? Any help or information anybody can offer would be greatly appreciated.
    PowerMac G5 Quad   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hi, I had the same problem with my dual core G5.
I installed the card and my computer won't boot up. The screen stays gray and the fan keeps spinning.
I contacted SIIG and they said the card is defective, which, I doubt it is.
I then returned it for a refund.

  • Mac G4 Won't Boot Completely After Restart

I fired up my Mac G4 and ran software update and installed the 10.4.11 update. When I restarted to complete the install the computer gets hung up -- a blue screen with the gear icon turning and turning. It worked fine before I did the update.
I've reset the PRAM to no avail. I've tried booting from the 10.4 install disc but that won'w work either?
Any ideas on how to get this working again?
    Thanks!

Open the service door and press the PMU reset button from about a second, then see if the computer starts. (Ref: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1939)
You can try a safe boot. Press and hold the SHIFT key until you see a message that the computer is starting in safe mode. When you see that message, t=you can let go of the key.
If this gets you a workable desktop, don't try to use any apps--their extensions are temporarily disabled. Try a normal restart to see if everything works.
I've found that by repairing permissions before and after doing a softare update, we've avoided update problems in all our OSX Macs.

  • Won't boot anymore after nvidia-xconfig

    Hey Guys,
Got a problem with my Arch Linux here, hope you can help.
Today I tried to install the official Nvidia Driver and BumbleBee following along the great Wiki on this topic.
Everything worked just fine and I also could run optirun gfxgear or somemthing like this.
I wanted to switch to the Nvidia Settings in the settings menu and it told me to configure my xconfig and restart x so I typed nvidia-xconfig in the terminal and it gave me an success output.
I restarted my system and now it hangs on the graphical thing I think. It won't boot anymore.
Hope you can help me out.
    Thanks alot
Edit: My Nvidia Card is a Nvidia GT 740M if this matters

No, I have a laptop with 2 graphic cards an intel hd4000 and a nvidia gt 740m.
I ran the Arch Linux installation well until I tried to get the nvidia gt working with bumblebee.
I followed the wiki of the bumblebee topic and it worked well. I wanted to switch into the nvidia settings and it told me my x isnt configured properly and I should type nvidia-xconfig and restart X.
After the restart it won't boot to the graphical interface anymore.
Hope this cleared up the things
Also I dont get any errors but it just wont load..

  • Hp Pavilion HPE PC H8-1214 won't boot up after installing a Western Digital External hard drive

I just recently installed a 3TB Western Digital External hard drive to use for backing up photos and since then I am now having problems with my computer.
I will turn the computer on, but nothing happens.  The power button lights up, but the small stack of CD's that would normally light up on the front, while it is powering on, does not light up.  My monitor screen just stays blank and nothing happens.
If I turn off the desktop and unplug the external hard drive from the USB, let the the PC sit for 30 sec to 1 minute and then power it back on, it works properly.
PC is an HP Pavilion HPE PC h8-1214
    Product #:  qw701aa#aba
    Running Windows 7
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your reply. I'll answer one at a time:
During these times when the computer seems to turn on but doesn't load Windows, do you get any type of image or error on the screen? Nothing appears on the screen at the time of boot. I don't even see the 'HP' logo or BIOS prompt.
Have you tried switching the power cable or testing the power cable in a different wall outlet (especially if it is plugged into a power strip, try it directly plugged into the wall). Yes I've plugged it into multiple outlets with and without surge protection with multiple power cables. The power supply doesn't seem to be the issue as it engages all fans etc.
If you've tried a known good power adapter in a known good outlet, it may be an issue with the power supply or a loose connection inside the computer (RAM, power, video card). I've re-seated all components, cables etc to no avail. I'm reasonably experienced in IT support and have never experienced an intermittent problem such as this.
The PC has been plugged in since I made my original post on 02/23/13. Each day I've powered it up to see if it would boot and had been unsuccessful. This evening, I walked by and hit the power button and instantly the drive 'disk' lights lit up, keyboard and mouse lit up, and it booted successfully (after 10 days of no luck). Now I'm afraid to shut it down b/c I never know when it will boot again. There are no system errors and it's running without any issues - until I shut it down again. The IT support guru's at my place of employment feel like it may be an issue with the motherboard since I don't see a bios prompt when this issue occurs. The unfortunate part is that I bought this re-furbished and the HP 90 warranty has expired...
Any further advice or troubleshooting assistance would be greatly appreciated!!
