HP ZR2740w vs HP Z27i

Hi,
Does anyone know how these compare? I was going to buy the ZR2740w. Is the Z27i a replacement for the ZR2740w? Is it inferior in any way?
Thanks.

  • Multiple ZR2740w failures within one and half year

    Hello,
i would like to ask you if it is "normal" for me to have this series of issues with my ZR2740w's (by normal i mean if this is typical problem for this model; i know it is not normal to have that many RMA) :
    1) first ZR2740w (let's call it A, bought in December 2011) died completely one month after purchase, panel got replaced via the onsite warranty by a new panel (let's call it B; RMA at end of January 2012).
    2) i bought a second ZR2740w (let's call it C) a half year later.
    3) C died one month ago after a year (end of April 2013), got replaced by probably a new or refurbished panel (call this one D) :
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NnHiEn42cM
    4) D died today, same (or very similar) issue as C; i expect a replacement panel around Friday or next Monday :
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bU1wf7QsvWQ
I wonder if it is something at my side, but i can't imagine what, everything else works fine. Socket voltage is withing tolerance (voltage here in Slovakia should be 230V, my socket has 236V which is within the +/-5% tolerance), the issue happens using any of connections (DVI/DP), from any source (tried 2 different computers with 3 different graphic cards - 2x Intel in various computers, 1xNVIDIA), using different power cables. C died when used on Eaton UPS, D died when connected directly to the socket.
While i still have year and half left from the warranty of the older display and nearly 2 years of the newer one, i dislike this happening all the time, as it means i am usually one week without one of my displays, plus i can expect both displays dying within one year after the warranty expires, which is unacceptable for ~600€ display (that is around a half of my monthly salary).
PS: And i don't even mentoin the "running pixels" issue of B on certain backgrounds (gray, blue and similar darker colors) - the pixels are moving from top to bottom, from half to about 3/4 of the display width; this one can be seen mostly when i am closer than 40cm from the display, further away it is nearly invisible (it's hard to catch it on camera, i hope you can see it at the first half of the video) :
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhiPDpSsa3g
PS2: And i am not sure i will be even able to ask for refund once the replacement for D dies again, as it would be the 3rd failure within warranty, but technically the whole panel gets replaced, so not sure if that law applies in this case... Plus it was replaced by an authorized HP service, not by the seller.

Just got a call from service centre, they will replace this display again, and if i get a 3rd failure within the warranty period they will refund me through the seller i bought the display from. Still can't understand why it happens, the only common thing between the failures of C and D is the power socket i get the power from (no issues with other devices connected to the same power line - LCD TV, AVR, two PC's, another ZR2740w, 23xi, Mac Mini), which i cannot change and not even the other ZR2740w has problems with.

  • HP ZR2740w keeps going dark

I recently purchased an HP ZR2740w monitor from B&H.  I had hoped to use it as a second monitor on my mac mini, but it pretty much flat out won't work on the mini other than at something like 1280x724, much worse than my Dell 1920x1080.
It would work, quite well for a while, with my Linux box through the display port, showing full resolution.  I'm running Linux Mint 17 (Qiana) on and Asus Z87 plus mother board.  I have three display set up, a Samsung SyncMaster 213T running via an hdmi->dvi adapter at 1600x1200, the HP on the mini display and a ViewSonic on the VGA.
The problem is that after a while, the HP will go dark. like it is in some power saving mode. Even if I'm playing a video on it.  It still tells the computer that it is there though, as my windows stay on the dark display and don't move to other displays, like they do when I turn it off. Also my cursor has to traverse the space of the dark display in the middle.
Once it happens once, I can sometimes bring it back by hitting the power button, but the next shutdown is much quicker. Somtimes, hitting the powerbutton will only show an image for less than a second before darkenss, in which case I have to cycle the power with the hard power switch on the back.
It seems as if this monitor has some sort of "sleep mode" to save power, rather than letting the computer decide when to do so.  The other possiblity, since the up times get a lot shorter, is that it is overheating and automatically shutting down because of that, but I can't imagine an LCD overheating in regular usage.

My comment about it being heat related prompted me to try to turn down the brightness, it being the only control on the monitor.  Without any sort of objective brightness indicator on the display (Why did you remove the OSD menu anyways?) it wasn't immediately obvious that the button was having any effect.  I did, however turn it down until it was visibly dimmer and have been playing video continuously for about an hour and a half without the screen blanking on me.
So, if the display has an overtemp cutoff, I may have figured out the solution.  If the display is not supposed to have an overtemp cutoff, then this one seems to have a temperature dependent fault.

  • Problem connecting HP ZR2740w to laptop

I recently purchased a HP ZR2740w monitor to use as a second monitor for my laptop (HP Pavilion dv7). I did not realize that I would not be able to hook the monitor up to my laptop as the monitor has only DisplayPort and DVI-D ports and my laptop only has VGA and HDMI (should have read the product info more carefully but I didn't think I would have a problem hooking a HP monitor to a HP laptop).
My question is, will any cables, such as an HDMI to DVI cable, or any other adapters, work to connect these two? I have not been able to find any info on this on the internet.
I tried a VGA to DVI adapter on a spare VGA cable I had lying around but that did not work (though I could be doing something wrong).
    Thanks,
    Kevin

DVI-D and HDMI use a common set of digital signals and therefore you should be able to connect your HP ZR2740w to your HP Pavilion dv7 laptop using a HDMI-to-DVI cable. The VGA port and DVI-to-VGA adapter won't because the analog signals are on different pins than the DVI digital signals.
    From Wikipedia;
    Compatibility with DVI
    An HDMI to DVI adapter
    A DVI to HDMI adapter
HDMI is backward-compatible with single-link Digital Visual Interface digital video (DVI-D or DVI-I, but not DVI-A). No signal conversion is required when an adapter or asymmetric cable is used, so there is no loss of video quality.[5]
From a user's perspective, an HDMI display can be driven by a single-link DVI-D source, since HDMI and DVI-D define an overlapping minimum set of supported resolutions and framebuffer formats to ensure a basic level of interoperability. In the reverse case a DVI-D monitor would have the same level of basic interoperability unless there are content protection issues with High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP), not supported by DVI, or the HDMI color encoding is in component color space YCbCr which is not supported by DVI, instead of RGB. An HDMI source such as a Blu-ray player may demand HDCP-compliance of the display, and refuse to output HDCP-protected content to a non-compliant display.[117] A further complication is that there is a small amount of display equipment, such as some high-end home theater projectors, designed with HDMI inputs but not HDCP-compliant.
Features specific to HDMI, such as remote-control and audio transport, are not available in devices that use legacy DVI-D signalling. However, many devices output HDMI over a DVI connector (e.g., ATI 3000-series and NVIDIA GTX 200-series video cards),[5] and some multimedia displays may accept HDMI (including audio) over a DVI input. Exact capabilities beyond basic compatibility vary from product to product.

  • HP ZR2740W unexpectedly turns itself off

I have an HP ZR2740W which I bought in December 2011. It has been working flawlessly with my HP desktop HP Pavilion h8-1080t (with AMD Radion HD 6850) until today. Today after 30-60 minutes of use (time varies) the monitor suddenly turns itself off. Goes from blue light to no light. If I turn it back on it gives a brief screen shot and then goes off again. If I let it sit for a while I can turn it back on again for another episode.
While it is working the picture quality is excellent. My room temperature is about 78F.
Any idea if it is still in warranty? Or how much it would cost to fix it? Is this sort of problem even repairable?

    Hello Rgparker77,
I understand you’re stating the monitors turns itself off completely, is that correct? I will be happy to help you.
Most of HP’s equipment comes with at least a 1 year standard warranty some with a  2 year warranty. I am not sure if you ever did but there was an opportunity to get an extended warranty if you don't recall doing that.
Because the online warranty checker doesn’t recognize the serial number, your best bet would be to contact the HP help desk. If you reside in the US or Canada the number is 1-800-474-6836, if you reside in another country click on this link and select your country and the number will be provided.
If you are still covered under warranty most of the time HP just fully replaces the monitor, but again that is sometimes a case by case bases.
I hope this information is helpful.
Please respond back at your earliest convenience.

  • Hp zr2740w turns off after few seconds

I have the same problem as described in an earlier post:
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Audio-Video-Monitors/hp-zr2740w-turns-off-after-few-seconds/m-p...
My HP zr2740w turns off after a second or so. Tested with vga/dvi/displayport and desktop pc/laptop, so it's not a cable issue.
My hp zr2740w was bought in July 2012 so it's probably out of warranty. I live in Finland. The webshop I ordered the hp zr2740w does not exist anymore. The HP support pages don't seem to have any support numbers for displays.
I took the display to a local IT support / electrician guy and he said it's a power supply issue. But he couldn't find a place to order the part so he could replace it.
Hopefully I'll get some answer here or an idea what to do. Wouldn't want to throw away an expensive display just because it has power issues.

  • T440s und HP Z27i Monitor: max. 1920x1200

Windows 8 Sticker?

    Hi, I just bought a used S5-1414 (Product # H3Y75AAR) 3.4 GHz i3 (Core i3 2130) desktop.
While it's "used" I think it must have been returned to a store immediately after purchase because its spotless.  It was missing its hard drive so maybe a drive failure was the reason for the return or the drive was just removed somewhere along the way for security purposes.
It's a nice little desktop and I'm thinking of using it as my main PC since I don't play games that often and could cut back on power costs by not firing up my monster Z800.  But I have two issues:
    1) There is a Windows 8 sticker (just a logo) on the side but no sticker with a product key on the computer.  I assume it originally had one because of the other sticker and drivers only seem to exist for Windows 8 and 8.1.  Before I go buying a copy of Windows 8 (or 8.1) I wanted to make sure there's not a way to get a product key since I own the computer that originally had a license tied to it.  I know with some systems if they are sold with an OS the license transfers with the hardware (though you may have to buy install media).  I'd bet this isn't the case but I wanted to check before I go spending money unnecessarily.
    2) Can a 27" ZR2740w be driven by the on-board graphics (Joshua-H61-uATX motherboard with HD2000 graphics on the i3)?  The ZR2740w is a GREAT monitor but doesn't have an on-board scaler and will only run at 2560x1440 and one or two lower resolutions.  I assume the BIOS screens are not at a high enough resolution to show on the monitor but I'm wondering if once the computer boots into Windows (which is not installed...see question 1) the monitor will work.  I'm not expecting great performance, just enough to browse the web and edit documents.
    Thanks!
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Here are the original factory specs for your HP Pavilion Slimline s5-1414 Desktop Computer. According to the specs this shipped from the factory with Windows 8 installed. Beginning with Windows 8, OEM computer manufacturers are required to encrypt and embed the Windows 8 product key in the BIOS/CMOS. This is referred to as a DPK (digital product key).
It is best to purchase and use HP Recovery Media for the computer, as this returns the computer to a factory like state. This includes the original OS, drivers, software, HP Recovery partition, HP Tools, etc. Please see DVD - English, French Windows 8 64b 12NA3RR8601 to purchase this HP Recovery Media.
Alternatively, you can try this Windows 8 OEM download; http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=en_windows_8_x64_dvd_915440.iso&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&sqi=2...
This is an unofficial "official licensed copy of Windows 8 OEM." Download this file (you may have to try several time or repeatedly to successfully download this file) and burn the ISO image to a DVD. Set the BIOS to use UEFI, enable "Secure Boot" and disable "Legacy Support... if these options are present. Boot from this disk and install Windows 8. It should register as an official copy and use the key embedded in the BIOS. Please note that no HP customizations nor HP value-added will be installed using this method.
The S5-1414 will not drive the ZR2740w monitor at full resolution. The monitor requires dual-link DVI while the computer only supports single-link DVI.
If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

  • HP ZR2740w drivers for Windows 8.1 x64

Where can I find the drivers for windows 8.1 for this monitor?
Please note that the Win7 x64 drivers are not accepted by Win8.1 x64.
Adding it as legacy hardware with the INF provided by the Win7 install program doesn't work either.

Hey there. I'm also looking for the same. Was there ever anything released?

  • ZR2740W discoloration at bottom of screen

Got this monitor 2 weeks ago and just started noticing a very faint gray horizontal, rectangular strip about 3/4 of the way down the screen. It is visible on pages with a white background. From what I could find on the site, it may be a problem with the polarizing filter. As I move my head, the strip becomes less apparent so it seems like that is the cause. Is this normal?

  • Mini-DP on X1 Carbon 2014 Not working.

    Hello,
On Friday I received my new X1 Carbon Model (20A7) with the WQHD non-touch display. I have used two different HP 27" ZR2740w displays (one at a time) using the Mini-DP port on the device. This is the same setup I had with the previous gen X1 Carbon and it worked fine outputting to the 27" monitor, I also tried a new mini-DP to Display Port cable for the monitor, (three cables and none of them worked).
I then went into the Lenovo Thinkvantage tools and downloaded everything it had available. Then went to Windows Update and got everything there that was available. Tested again, no go. I then uninstalled the Intel graphics driver, booted into pretty VGA mode, then re-downloaded the Intel driver from the Lenovo site reinstalled and no go. The BIOS on the computer updated, there are no addiitonal driver or application updates to download at this time.
Now I am thinking that the hardware is bad because I believe that the laptop can support a second 2560x1440 resolution display externally.
This is with Win7 and the factory image.
Does anyone have any thought on this?

It should be plug and play. If it doesn't work out of box, it usually points to a hardware issue. The only other test I would recommend us to reset the system to factory condition and see what happens.

  • Can I daisy chain a DisplayPort-only monitor through the 2nd TB connector on a WD 8TB My Book Thunderbolt Duo to a mid-2011 Mac Mini?

I'm very tempted by a refurb HP Smartbuy ZR2740w 27" WQHD display, but it doesn't have a HDMI port. It does have DisplayPort.
Since the mid-2011 Mac Mini I have has either HDMI or Thunderbolt to choose from, plus I've just bought an external TB storage system, I think I'd need to connect the monitor to the second TB port on the external TB storage and hope that the external storage would pass the DisplayPort signals along.
I've read that DisplayPort connections are compatible with TB ports on Macs, and that you can daisy chain TB devices.
I don't want to assume those statements hold when I'd need to connect the DisplayPort cable to the 2nd TB port on the external storage.
Anyone know if this will work?
    Is it "supported"?
    Thanks!
    Andrew

    23. How do I connect my Mini DisplayPort monitor or monitor using a Mini DisplayPort adapter to my Thunderbolt-equipped Mac when I have other Thunderbolt devices connected?
When connecting a Mini DisplayPort display or a display using a Mini DisplayPort adapter to a Thunderbolt peripheral (except as described in question 24), make sure the display is connected at the end of the Thunderbolt chain. You can use only one Mini DisplayPort device in the Thunderbolt chain.
Note: Systems with more than one Thunderbolt port, like an iMac, can have more than one Mini DisplayPort monitor or monitor connected with a Mini DisplayPort adapter connected as each Thunderbolt port can support one Mini DisplayPort display.
    24. Can I connect my Mini DisplayPort monitor or monitor using a Mini DisplayPort adapter to my Apple Thunderbolt Display?
Mini DisplayPort Monitors or Monitors connecting with Mini DisplayPort adapters will not function when connected through a Thunderbolt Display. They must be connected directly to the Thunderbolt port on the computer or to a non-display device as indicated above.

  • Connecting MacBook Pro to external monitor

I want to connect my late 2011 MacBook Pro (Thunderbolt port) running OS X Ver 10.9.1 to an external monitor.  Am considering the HP ZR2740W 27 in LED IPS monitor.  Any issues or experience in community to do this?  Will I need a special cable? Any other monitors to consider/recommend?

Note that the Thunderbolt port functions as a Mini DisplayPort. This is important because you probably won't find any non-Apple monitors that list a Thunderbolt port, but many now list a Mini DisplayPort. On those monitors all you need is a Mini DisplayPort cable.
If you choose the Nixeus display, the one I'm looking at lists DisplayPort, Dual-Link DVI, HDMI, and VGA. That means you won't be able to use a straight Mini DisplayPort cable with it and your Mac. You'll need a cable with Mini DisplayPort at one end, and a plug on the other end that matches one of the ports on the display. For best performance and highest resolution support, you should use a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable.
Also, although some monitors may use "the same panel" as the Apple displays, keep in mind that Apple tends to take only the cream of the crop of that run of IPS panels, which is why they charge more. Other panels from the same lot, which have been rejected by Apple, end up in the budget IPS displays like the ones from Monoprice. These are still great panels, near the top of the lot, but just not quite good enough for Apple. They may be slightly off in terms of brightness uniformity or dead pixels, but if you're not like a pro photographer or something the budget monitor should be more than good enough.

  • Can't Afford Thunderbolt Display for New MacMini, Next Best Brand?

Anybody have options? I dug up an older 2002 Gateway monitor, but haven't got a power cable yet for it. Is there a possibility of hooking up through my Windows XP Toshiba Satellite laptop? I still have my old eMac buried in the dining room, would I be able to hook up to that? I also have a Seagate external HD that is supposed to be able to work for both Mac and Windows, though I don't think they mean simultaneously.

One thing to keep in mind when it comes to displays is
the actual resolution and not necessarily size.  A vast
majority of monitors out there in the low to mid price range
have a resolution of 1920x1080.  Reason, this is a standard
    HDTV resolution.
So, 21.5", 24", 27" will have the same number of pixels, and the
larger screen sizes will have bigger pixels. So, you won't get any
more desktop on the screen with  a 27" than you will with a 21.5".
The reason the Apple display and others like it are so expensive
because they pack more pixels into the display (33% more in
both vertical and horizontal).  For example on Amazon (all 27", 2560x1440):
    NEC PA271w-bk   $952
Dell Ultrasharp  U2711  $785 (on sale reg. $949)
HP ZR2740w  $706 (also on sale reg. $860)
    to mention a few.
The result of the higher resolution is it can pack a little more desktop
on the screen (really helpful if you work with schematics or architectural
drawings) and images and such will appear sharper.
Just something to keep in mind when making your final decision
    that size isn't everything.
