HP4560US won't run on new battery

I replaced my battery and let it charge until the charge light turned green before I used the new battery. My notebook also has a weak power jack and sometimes will quit powering the notebook until it is moved or twisted.  Even with a full charge, it will only run for about 30 seconds if the AC power fails or if I try to run it on battery power only. I pulled the fully charged battery from the computer and pressed the test button on the side of the battery and it lit all but the last LED. Is the battery not charging sufficiently or is there a setting the allows changing the voltage level of a fully charged battery? In Power Management I have disabled all shut down options in an attempt to see how long it would run on battery alone.

The information you requested is as follows: Model Number is HP Pavillion ze4500 s/n CNF3432HP8 P/N DM736A#ABA  ze4560US. There has been no new hardware OR drivers added recently. The operating system is Windows XP Home with the latest Service Pack.
However, while looking the computer over and the labels, I think I have found the problem. I won't know until I can get another charger which I have ordered. The plug on the power supply has a yellow plastic insulator that extended beyond the barrel of the connector. I had known for a long time that part of that had broken off. I DID NOT know where that piece had gone, thinking it broke in handling the power supply. I happened to look into the power jack (which is HPs weak point on all of their laptops....at least up to this model. I have replaced that jack at least twice and I believe a third time but there is barely enough to solder to the main board and I hesitated to try to replace it again) and found that broken ring of plastic inside the jack. I believe that power jack has a switch on it operated bye the insertion of the plug to charge the battery and I'm guessing that the ring is not allowing the battery to be connected to the mainboard when the AC power fails. I removed the battery to prevent a short while trying to remove the broken piece but failed to remove it. I have some other ideas to try but decided that I should wait until I receive a new power supply since after I run the battery down it may not recharge once that is removed.
Let me know what you think and I'll let you know how things turn out. If you believe I'm wrong about this, I'm open to any other thoughts. Thanks, Ron

  • Macbook Pro won't run on new battery

Okay, so I have this 17" MBP, late 2007 vintage, gotten refurbished in 2010. The battery, which was at about 700 cycles as of last week, swelled and was somehow still working up to the point when the new battery got here and was put in. That's fine with me, it's a refreshing change from the oodles of power cords I've gone through in the last several years. HOWEVER. The new battery, purchased off eBay from a highly-rated seller, had a cycle count of one when I installed it, and is now causing me problems. The couple of times I had it off the power cord right after putting the new battery in, it behaved a little erratically, shutting down in the thirty seconds it took me to change locations with it, but I didn't worry myself about it.
I had it off the power cord earlier today, and it was fine for half an hour or more, but then shut itself down abruptly. When I plugged it in and rebooted, it was showing the battery at about 50%. I did a little research and reset both the SMC and the PRAM, in the hopes that maybe it was just an issue of not really recognizing that it was a new battery yet. Immediately after those resets, during a bootup without being plugged in, it shut itself down before even completing the boot. I'm really hoping it's just a fluke with the new battery, and not that some other aspect of the MBP is failing, but I figured I'd ask around here before contacting the eBay seller.

  • Powerbook won't run off of battery - requires PMU reset to power up with AC

Like everyone else posting here, my powerbook won't run from the battery. I have two batteries, one that came with the computer 3 - 4 years ago and a newer one that I purchased about 1 year ago. When I am plugged into AC using iStat Nano the newer battery shows cycles 173, health 89%. The older battery show cycles 0 and health 100% (go figure!). Both batteries just say 'calculating' on the tool bar battery meter. The light around the AC adapter plug always shows green as if the batteries are fully charged.
Here is where my post differs from the others. Once I shut down the computer I can't power it up again with reseting the PMU. I've tried reseting NVRAM and deleting and re-establishing the powermanagement plist as suggested elsewhere on this forum to no avail.
Is the PMU something that can be replaced? How is it related to DC-IN? I've read elsewhere here that is another problem that could cause these symptoms. Has anyone had these two components repaired and did it fix the problem? How much did it cost?
Thanks in advance for any information you can give men.

I had the same experience. I have 10.4.10 on the cloned drive but the battery is still not charging. I decided to take a closer look at the battery updater instructions and discovered that even though I am at 10.4.11 on my Powerbook the BatteryUpdater.bundle was at revision 1.1.3 and hadn't been updated since Jan 6, 2006. So I downloaded the BatteryUpdate that is posted at the top of this forum and installed it. It has made no difference in the operation of the computer. The AC adapter still isn't charging the battery although the green ring light is on which usually indicates the battery is charged. furthermore, when I go back and look at the date and version number on the BatteryUpdater.bundle they haven't changed. Who knows what the update actually changed! There is no mention of it running in the software update log. My system profiler says:
    The battery is installed
    Full charge Capacity 3890
    Remaining Capacity 0
    Cycle Count 173
AC adapter cannot charge battery: YES
By the way, my battery is a replacement battery.
I have just about exhausted all my option other than taking it into an Apple repair store and I'm not sure at this point I want to give Apple any more of my money. I am going to live with it the way it is for a while in the hopes that someone will post a fix for the problem. Good luck with your investigation. If you find out anything else please post it here as I will check back on a regular basis. If I find out anything else I will do the same. Nice working with you.

  • PB doesn't always start up/won't run on charged battery

I have a 15" aluminum PowerBook that I've slowly been bringing back to life after it had a full mug of coffee dumped into it. I cleaned everything out and it's working again, for the most part. However, there are a couple of unresolved problems. The biggest is the computer doesn't always start up. I've also noticed that it won't run on the battery alone, even though the battery is fully charged. When unplugging the computer, the screen goes dark but the computer is still making noise -- it's running to some extent. Any pointers on how to get things running again properly would be greatly appreciated.

If you're able to charge the battery while it's in the computer, and pushing the button on the back of the battery shows all the LEDs lighting up, that suggests that you have a logic board problem. There are only 4 components to the charging circuit: power adapter, DC-in card, battery, and logic board. If what you described is that you can hook the power adapter up and charge the battery completely in the computer, the only component left is the logic board.
While there aren't any tests I've found to test the charging circuit, have you run the Apple hardware test or either of the TechTool programs to test the system? Insert your original OS X disk that says 'AHT Version x.x' in small print on the label. Reboot holding the option key down, choose the Apple hardware test, and when prompted choose the extended test. Does that give you any errors?

  • My processer won't run the new update ?

I have an iBook G4. After downloading the new version of Firefox it will not run so I have to continue with the older version. I continuously get messages telling me my version is out of date which is getting annoying.
Apple want me to buy a new computer at about £1000 which I can't afford.even if I could, the old programmes won't run on new processors so I would the have to buy them all again. not a good AD for apple? Greed rears it's ugly head!!!.

  • HT4314 how do I turn off a game after playing so the app won't run down my battery?

How do I turn off a game after playing it so the app won't run down the battery. This has happened 2x and I have had to reset my phone.

To completely close an app (though a lot of apps don't remain active when you switch into a different app or go to the homescreen) : from the home screen (i.e. not with the app that you want to close 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.

  • MBP Won't Run Off the Battery

I've had my computer for a little over a month, and the other day it stopped running off the battery. Everything is fine when I have the AC adapter plugged in, but the computer won't start up if it is disconnected. I ran the computer off the battery more often than not before this started happening. I removed the battery and put it back in a few times, but that didn't help. Has anyone seen this before? Thanks!

Mine did almost the exact same thing.
A few days after the update, it started registering 32 hours of remaining charge (33500+ MhA), and one day, all of a sudden, the battery just died.
Mac OS says there is no battery installed, obviously it won't charge or run on battery power, when I press the LED button it does nothing. It's just dead.
My machine is almost 2 months old... I called Apple and complained about this whole thing, because my machine has almost every other defect out there, including the whine, the almost unbearable temperatures, the moo, and the LED buzz... so I told them that enough was enough and that I wanted a new machine.
They just said I sould drop it off at the Apple Center, and THEY would decide if should get a new machine.
I feel so terribly frustrated. How is it possible that you spend $2000+ Dlls on a machine that after just 2 months does all these things, and still be treated unfairly, like an idiot, with arguments like "It's our decision if we replace the machine, or repair it..." ??
This is just not fair. But what can we do, right?

I'm a developer I just bought a new laptop running Windows 7 Professional Service pack 1. I downloaded Firefox 11.0 and downloaded and installed the Adobe Flash plugin! I’ve tried just about everything to get the plugin working but Firefox tells me I have an old version and has turned it off for security reasons. I have included the Flash registry settings and the Flash install log. Dell install a version of flash but it looks like the ActiveX not the Plugin Dll. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox and Flash many times it still won’t work. Firefox is no good to me without this plugin. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Photoshop CS3 installs but won't run on new OS install

    Hello,
I've been searching through the forums and have seen some users with a similar problem, but haven't found any info that's relevant to my situation.
I have done a fresh install of Windows XP Pro SP2 and decided to install a brand-new copy of CS3 at the same time.
This computer is totally fresh - there are no printers, no TWAIN drivers, no funny fonts or games installed. The only software on this machine is Windows and whatever updates Windows Update has pushed out.
The Photoshop installer runs fine - no crashes or error messages. However, when I try to start up Photoshop, I just get the outer frame of the app window and (usually) the File / Edit / Image / Layer... menu bar. There is no splash screen, and no palettes appear. If I click anywhere in the app window, the menu bar disappears and the title bar says "Not responding".
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling from both the DVD and the web download. I've tried selecting the "repair" option on the install screen. I've tried downloading and installing the 10.0.1 update.
I tried installing Lightroom and Reader to see if those work (they do).
I tried installing the latest video driver for my gfx card.
None of these change the behaviour I've been seeing at all. I opened a support case with Adobe about 4 days ago but haven't gotten a response yet.
Any thoughts? I was able to run PS CS1 on this computer just fine before I formatted the hard drive and reinstalled everything, so I don't think it's a hardware issue.
    Thanks,
    Thomas Park

    Hi Guys,
Ive got the same problems as you, Win XP SP2 on RAID 1 hard disk set on an AMD raid controller, but I have no driver to roll-back to.
Ive installed Photoshop CS3 and also Acrobat Standard 8 (which used to run fine on an old system), but all i get now is the blank window with the menu and title bar and thats all.
Can some one help?  (will this licensing patch resolve the issue - and where can i get it from?)
    Thanks

  • FCP HD won't run on new alu iMac 20"

I'd be interested to know if anybody has a work around for this problem: I just purchased a new 20" aluminium iMac and installed my copy of FCP 4.5 HD - BUT - I get an error message stating that FCP can't open because there's no AGP card!
I've been using an eMac G4 with FCP 4.5 HD and it's been great for what I need. Now I buy a new iMac and I get this error. Are you kidding me Apple?
    Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Oliver, I followed the link to http://www.geekymac.com/?p=243 and made the code changes (like we did back in the day when iDVD wouldn't run on a Mac without a superdrive) and now FCP opens just fine. Hopefully this will help others with the same predicament and performance will be satisfactory.

  • AppleWorks 6.2.7 won't run on new Macbook / Leopard

    Hi,
I've just migrated from a G4 iBook to a 2.2GHz Macbook and while AppleWorks (v 6.2.7) installed OK, when I try to run it the application quits immediately.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Eric

    Hi Eric,
Welcome to Apple Discussions and the AppleWorks forum.
I suspect the problem is one or more of the following:
Recent Items: This is a bug to which AppleWorks seems to have become more sensitive with each step forward in Mac OS X. An excess of items in your Recent Items folder can slow AppleWorks to the point where it will crash on opening.
Cure: Delete all or most of the items from your Recent Items folder.
Location: MAC HD > yourname > Documents > AppleWorks User Data > Starting Points > Recent Items
Corrupt Preferences file(s): Many AppleWorks problems are due to corruption of the AW .plist file or one of the other preference files that AppleWorks keeps for each user. Deleting the preference files is a task that should be done whenever AW crashes.
Location: MAC HD > yourname > Library > Preferences
Action 1: Delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist at this location
Action 2: Open the folder AppleWorks at this location. Delete the contents, with one possible exception: If you have made changes to the Button Bar, don't delete the Button Bar preferences file.
Permissions: A maintenance item for OS X (before and ) after any major installation, including installing new software.
Action: Launch Disk Utility, found in Applications > Utilities. Select your hard drive from the list at the left, click First Aid (if it's not already selected), then click Repair Permissions.
Unicode: AppleWorks is not Unicode compatible, and will crash on the first keystroke in any text environment (word processor, text frae in drawing, etc.)
Action: Open System Preferences > International... Input menu. Choose one of the "Roman" keyboard layouts.
    Regards,
    Barry
PS: AW 6.2.7 is NOT recommended as it is probably the most bug-filled recent version of AW 6. See my post (third from the top) in THIS THREAD for links to updaters.

  • Microsoft Office won't run on new computer

I bought a new G5 and did the complete disk transfer when I booted the new system up. Now I'm getting a message that says the "test drive" of Office is complete and I need to register a new product. Can anyone tell me why this is and how I fix it without having to buy another very expensive software package.

I just got a Mac mini and had the same problem. On investigating my Applications folder, it seemed that I'd transferred the old Microsoft Office stuff okay through my firewire, but there was also a 'test drive' version of it in there as well. This meant I could open Word / Excel etc fine from the dock, and then open documents within it, but if I tried to click on a document in the finder window or on the desktop, I got the 'test drive has expired' message.
Deleting the test drive version seems to have got round the problem. (Although just occasionally a file won't open, and gives me some other kind of error message which I can't remember, and of course it won't do it now!)
However, one problem I am having is that it won't automatically open Word attachments in Mail, and I have to manually tell it which program to use every time. Anyone know how to fix this one?

  • Moneywell won't run on new computer

I just purchased a new imac.  I transferred applications from my macminit from a backup drive.  When I try to run the Moneywell application, it wants me to log into the Mac App store and install it. The Mac App Store application says it is installed.  So far, everything else I purchased from the app store works.

This thread concerns applications for Mac.
The problem was generated when using the migration assistant on a disk from my previous computer.  This resulted in the situation where the Mac App Store thinks the application is installed, but when running the application, the application code sees itself as not installed correctly.  Simply deleting the versions did not work. The Mac App Store still found the application installed.  The problem was resolved by searching the disk to find associated configuration files.  Once these were deleted, the Mac App Store sees the application as uninstalled and will allow the application to be installed.
    Thank You.

From the information you have posted, there is no obvious reason why your battery should be failing or why your MacBook is not working unplugged.
However, the first line of attack for any battery problem is to reset the SMC. Follow the instructions here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411
If that does not address your issue, you may need to call AppleCare or visit an Apple store.
