HPE-210f, one 4-pin ATX power connector support USB card ?
For my Pavilion Elite HPE-210f, Product # BK169AA#ABA, HP support, Motherboard Specifications, H-RS880-uATX (Aloe), shows my PC as offering "one 4-pin ATX power connector."
Does that "ATX power connector" meet the requirement for a "5V 4 pin connector" to power a USB 3.0, 4-port, PCI-E Express Card that I wish to install? With no free PCI Express x16 slot, I can't mount a GigaBit Ethernet card, so the USB 3 card seems helpful, apparently faster anyway, for connecting to the SS-USB port on my Gigabit switch.
How do we decode/understand the P-codes (ergo, P3, P5, I think I recall) on the power connectors on cables from the power supply?
Also, the PC board specs promise "Three PCI-Express x1 (Gen 2.0)," and "One PCI Express x1 minicard socket (Gen 2.0)." I cannot identify the minicard socket, but I do see three identical PCI-Express x1slots, with only one occupied, so the slot requirement looks fulfilled.
Power cable OK? Comments, advice? Thanks!
No, the 4-pin ATX power connector is for the motherboard. If you have a link to the USB card, send it. Some use a 4 pin peripheral (molex) , some use a 15 pin Sata power lead.
I am sending this link. It explains all the various connectors of the typical PSU.

Quick question on 8-pin ATX Power Connectors
First, I am very VERY new at building systems. I was building a Athlon 3800+ X2 system with a MSI RD480 Neo2-FI motherboard and ran into a 8-pin ATX Power connector. Unfortunately, the 450 Watt PSU that came with my Antec Sonata II does not have that plug. The Computer Renassaince guy told me to just plug the 4-pin into the mobo and it would work (personally, I think he is nuts). Question, is he right? If not do I have to buy a new PSU or can I use some type of adapter?
Again, realize I am very new at this. Thanks in advance. You mean that there is a 8 pin connector on the mainboard is for cpu power supply and your own power supply doesn't have such a relevant
connector. If in that case, then the guy who told you to use the 4 pin connector is right, most of the time, it would work. You don't need to buy another power supply. Please firstly have a try. -
Information on Sun Ultra 5/10 PSU regarding 6-pin AUX power connector
I've been messing around and reviving my old Ultra 5 and Ultra 10 machines. I've been considering upgrading the ATX power supply to something more modern, quiet, and 80Plus. From the hardware documentation, I have already confirmed that the 20-pin ATX main power connector is exactly as specified for ATX v1.3. So, any modern ATX PSU with a 20-pin or 20+4-pin main power connector should suffice in that area. However, on the Ultra 10, the 6-pin AUX power is also used. I'm guessing this is probably to power the UPA graphics stuff (Creator3D/Elite3D/etc.) since the Ultra 5 has the connector on the motherboard but the PSU doesn't supply any power to that 6-pin.
Looking at the 6-pin connector, it is orange-orange-orange-black-black-black. Typically, on PC hardware, this 6-pin is red-orange-orange-black-black-black. Does this mean Sun used a slighty different 6-pin AUX? I.e., instead of 2x 3.3V + 1x 5V line, does Sun use 3x 3.3V lines? I suppose I can just measure it, but it would be nice to have a 2nd opinion just so when I do measure it, I have some confirmation of what i'm seeing from someone else.
As FYI for anyone else, the U5 with a 10K RPM SCSI disk and 'glm' based SCSI controller draws only 60-65W, while the U10 with Elite3D draws almost 130W!!!! I'm hoping i can find an appropriately spec'd modern PSU since the power requirements on these things are so low!

four of the eight connector receptacles are blocked with a removable piece of plastic. Why is this?
You can safely remove the cap and use the additional four pins, if your power supply has a proper connector. Four of the eight pins are covered to avoid confusion with PSUs that only have a 4-pin connector.

Problem 2: PSU-mainboard compatibility
The Enermaxx LIBERTY DXX 620 SLI (ELT620AWT-00) is listed in the MSI PSU compatibility list. It does not have a -5V-rail either. You should be fine.

Problem 3: PCIe power connector
Use one of the 6-pin connectors of your PSU. That way you can make sure that the power load is balanced. Those adaptors are usually for PSU that do not provide 6-pin PCIe-plugs. -
2nd 8-pin CPU power connector on Big Bang XPower
I am currently using both 8-pin CPU power connectors and am wondering if it is really necessary with my current overclock. For all the BB XPower owners let me know your thoughts on this.
When doing early tests with the BB Xpwr, I only had a single 8 pin CPU connector ( PSU was single +12V Rail). Since it was not necessary but recommended, I purchase an 8 pin Y cord manufactured by Athena. It worked perfectly until I got a newer double cabled 8 pin PSU (Single +12V rail Corsair AX1200). I also supply power to the boards 6 Pin JPWR4. As Jack says, if the PSU has the connectors (or use the Athena), fill 'em up with power!

Ive just modded my new power supply to fit my bespoke case, but the ATX 12v power connector(4pin) has a fault.
when connected it causes nasty noices through the speaker system like its got a break in the wires from the PSU to the connector on the board.
The question is......
I havent got it connect at the mo, the pc is running ok so do i need to use it??????

Enermax Noisetaker ATX power connector and MSI Neo 2 Platinum?
A question. I haven't even setup my system yet but...
My Enermax EG425P-VE SFMA noisetaker PSU has a 24 pin power jack. 4 of the 20 pins separates from the remaining 20 and the 20 pin connector fits into the motherboard. Those 4 that were "connected" to the other 20 don't correspond with what plugs into the motherboard near the CPU. Another 4 pin lead that fits. Is this correct? Looking at the Enermax owners manual it appears to be right.
What are the other 4 connectors on the 24 pin power lead for anyways?Quote

I have an EPS Enermax PSU too, same boat as you, my 24pin splits into a 20pin and a 4pin (where the 4pin split is useless).
Goodluck.
All the NF4 boards are using the 24-pin ATX interface. That extra 4-pin split isn't useless--it allows you to use that psu in these boards. -
Would love to install Airdrop on my IPad 3rd Generation. Any hints?
Sorry, but Airdrop is not supported on iPad 3:
AirDrop will be supported on iPad 4, iPadMini, iPhone 5 and iPod Touch 5 and later devices running iOS 7. It is also supported on Macs running OS X Lion, though Macs released earlier than 2010 may not be supported. -
Recently put together a new PC build using a MSI MPower z87, but my power supply (BFG 1250watt - modular) only had one lead for the 8pin power connection for the board. I tried to use a different connector that the power supply had plenty of, a 6pin + 2 pin that was the same size and shape with the +2 connected, but when I attempted to power on, the thinner wire to the +2 portion melted. Did this hurt the board? and Is it safe to run the board with only one of the two 8 pin power connectors connected? (JPWR1 and JPWR2) I do have the larger JPWR3 connected (the one above the SATA connectors).
I'm guessing I'll need to get a new power supply, the BFG one I have is a bit old, from a 2009 build, which may be why it only has one ATX 8pin connector. Can anyone recommend a power supply that defiantly has 2 (or more) 8 pin ATX power connectors?
Thanksthat may have fried the board as a 8 pin CPU power connector has different pins (a live and a ground on the side) but a 8 pin PCI-E power connector has 2 grounds there so you may have blown something on the board or damaged the PSU itself if your unlucky!
try with just one 8pin CPU power connector and and hope to hell you haven't blown something and you lucked out there and haven't damage something (It only needs one unless your using LN2 cooling and doing massive overclocks and huge over voltage's to push the CPU way above its design limits)!
also if you have damaged something and its broke your in a bad position here as you will have voided the warranty as its classed as user error because you made the mistake of convecting that! -
ThinkStation P700 - adding a third-party video card: supplementary power connectors?
Hi all,
I have recently purchased a ThinkStation P700 to replace my ageing setup and hopefully serve me for many years to come - It has not yet arrived (that's a different story altogether...).
I have a bit of a dillema regarding the video card I purchased for it. For my work I need CPU, much less so GPU, and especially not a Quadro. So for pure pleasure I added a GeForce GTX Titan Black (yes, I know that Lenovo will will not provide support for stability issues caused by this, etc, etc). I have the card already - here's my problem:
The card uses external power - it has one 8-pin and one 6-pin PCIe power connector on top of the board. With adapters I can get this to three 6-pin or multiple Molex, etc. The motherboard and the PSU in the P700 however, are so well designed and modular, that they almost seem too modular... I looked up the motherboard layout in the manual, and there are only 4-pin (?) connectors on the board, which are supposedly meant to be used with video cards. After a very long session with google it seems that hardly anyone has even heard of 4-pin power connectors for PCIe. Looking at pictures of the chassis available online, everything seems completely self-contained - the PSU slots into the board, and there are no free-hanging cables available whatsoever - am I right? Also pictures showing two full-size video cards installed, do not show power cables at all - maybe they're just cute marketing pics - the Quadros have power ports at the back - I simply can't see power cables in those pics, and the motherboard sockets are free. Obviously I know that the 4-pin, 6-pin and 8-pin are only combinations of 12V rails and ground.
So my questions are:
- are there any 6-pin or 8-pin connectors or Molex available anywhere at all?
- is there a spare part in the form of a 4-pin to 6-pin adapter? Is it perhaps bundled with the P700?
- how are the Lenovo-integrated video cards powered - surely with how thin the PCIE tracks are, they can't be powered only from the board - or can they?
- is this perhaps a joke on me / catch to make sure I only buy the pre-approved cards?
Thank you in advance.
Regards,
owczi
Solved!
Go to Solution.Hi,
Now THAT was lots of info, and more. Much appreciated.
1. Power connectors - Indeed, Titan (Black) is 8 + 6 - so I'm happy with the info I got from you guys so far.
2. Specs listing dual K6000 - this site (looks like a Lenovo site?): http://thinkstation-specs.com/thinkstation-p700/ - there's a PDF with the same info there. This even says 3 x K6000 in SLI. I mean the board physically has three long slots, and three of those 4-pin ports that according to the manual have something to do with power - but I can't see this working. The psref site says K6000 (one) but the online shop will not let you configure the P700 with one - unless some other options preclude it and that's why I didn't see it.
3. CPU - I have no need for dual CPUs right now so I went for a single E5-1650v3 - I bought the P700 not P500 just so that I have an upgrade option, I may not use the second socket in the end but who knows.
4. Yes, I got the 9364-8i card (plus supercap module) - is this a Lenovo-specific model? Hard to find anything about it online - or is it just new? The blind mate assemblies are good news. So not much different to server-type drive caddies in the end - minus hot swap maybe.
5. Regarding the drives - are the internal (not front - the bottom ones) drive bays also referred to as FLEX bays? Theye are four of them and I intend to use four drives only ( 2x 240G SSD RAID 1 pre-installed + 2 x 4TB RAID 1 mine) - so why do I need to stick two drives into one tray - or is this just if I wanted to maximise the number of drives usable? The 4TB drives are HGST UltraStar 7k4000 - standard, full-thickness 3.5". The SSDs are Lenovo's whatever - the "240G SSD" option - Intel I think, looking at psref.
6. Shipping delays - see, this is the sort of concrete info I was looking for and I'm immensely thankful for this.
The rest is a rant/vent someone from Lenovo should read.
So - in the meantime I started giving Lenovo UK & Ireland some abuse over Twitter (sorry, but well deserved IMO) - name and shame does wonders in the age of social media.
Had I been told something along the lines of "sorry, new product, build issues, we're working on it", I would have (reluctantly) shut up and waited for my turn. I'm an engineer myself, supporting systems where minutes of downtime cost hundreds of thousands, and working with vendors a lot. Delays and issues happen, when an engineer tells me there's an issue and I don't sense B/S, I accept it.
If the product is still wet, don't open it for orders or say it's pre-order. I can see that in the US the P700 is still "coming soon", in the UK it suddenly became available so I ordered it.
However, the process here is broken: Lenovo UKI (is it the same in the US?) uses DigitalRiver as the shop/shipping/support front end. That's all well and good, outsourcing does work in some cases. BUT there's no way to view the estimated shipping dates - only customer support can retrieve them from Lenovo (why can't they just make this info available online - to avoid people over-relying on it?)
The Customer Support cannot tell me anything. The only thing they can do is pull an estimated shipping date out of some magic 8-ball. Two weeks pass since order, I ask CS, they give me Dec 18th shipping date. I call them on the 22nd, on the call with me they tell me it's now magically the 22nd. Come on...
Throughout all this time I got zero notifications about anything happening with the order, as far as the Lenovo site is concerned, it's "in process" since Nov 29. Do you know that when I order a Domino's pizza from round the corner, I get a live animated progress screen from order through assembly, baking, QA and delivery?
Yes, it costs money and yes, businesses pushing more consumer grade disposable **bleep** than anything else, don't care about customer loyalty anymore, but why don't you at least show the high-end customers some respect - why can't you implement a tracking process for custom builds, or at least keep people updated?
I specifically chose the Lenovo P-series because I have no doubt that they are the best on the market. Dell don't offer the same storage options and customisation options. HP are not up there either. Fujitsu Siemens make great machines with straightforward hinged doors and drive bays behind them, but they have a **bleep** distribution model i.e. via specialised resellers only, making it near-impossible for a regular mortal to buy - at least in the UK. So the sad thing here is that I will most likely just wait and you'll still get my money - but if the official channels keep treating me like an idiot, I am very tempted to take my $4k somewhere else. -
Molex power connector question
I will be installing a PCI Express x1 card. I have to connect a 4-pin molex power connector to the card. I see 4-pin power connectors labeled P4, P6, etc. Can I use any of them?
This question was solved.
View Solution. The card power header will dictate the type of plug you will use. I am linking connectors here because your confused. Although the molex, floppy, and ATX all have 4 pins, all are different designs. The ATX also has a different electrical output.

KT2 COMBO, Is 12v power Connector Needed?
Just Bought a "KT2 COMBO" to upgrade mi good old 6330 lite, and add some 2100 DDR Ram, and a new xp processor ( 2000+ ).
The problem is I'm using the same case, and the power supply in it has no 12 V ATX Power connector.
In the Quick User Guide, it refers to it (p 2-9), saying it's to provide power to the CPU.
Would the system work ok if I use only the main power connector?
Has anyone tried using it this way?If you don't have stability problems it's probably fine.
You can buy an adapter to allow you to convert a mulex ( like you plug into an HDD ) to the 4 pin 12V plug.
If you don't have one you might try looking in local shops for butn out PSUs that have them, cut the wire and solder it to your PSU's output ( yellow to yellow, black to black ) -
Z68a-GD80 (G3) which power connectors?
The board comes with an 8-pin power socket, with a 4 pin blanking plate on it. There is also a 6-pin socket which I think should only be for multiple GPUs.
My Coolermaster modular PSU has one 8-pin and one 4-pin power cable in the same bundle as the 24-pin cable.
I will be installing one of your 6970 Lightning graphics cards and an i2500k CPU.
So...
I assume I remove the blanking plate and use the 8-pin power cable, but do I need to use the 6-pin with just this GPU? If so, is the 4-pin cable any use, or do I need to use all 6-pins and hence a molex to 6-pin?
thanks
BlonksterQuote from: HU16E on 16-September-11, 09:37:28
Remove the plastic cover & use your PSU's 8-pin EPS/ATX power connector. The 4-pin is of no use. The mainboard 6-pin connector is for a PSU PCI-E power connector, or a dual Molex adapter to PCI-E 6-pin. If you have a PCI-E PSU cable left over after the connections to the VGA, may as well power the mainboards PCI-E 6-pin too.
Thanks, I don't have a spare 6-pin cable, so I assume I don't need to obtain one for the single graphics card - it has two 8-pin connectors of its own! -
K8D Master3 : SMB power connector
Hi!
I've bought the K8D Master3 motherboard, and there's a 5-pin SMB power connector on the motherboard. But my PSU doesn't include one. Will it work without using it? I'm having some trouble finding power supplies that have this connector.
VidarGuess what, I never was able to figure out where it could be used for
You only need to connect 24 pin and the 8 pin headers, nothing else is needed.

New FX5900 TD128 - Power Connector?
Hello everyone,
I just bought a new FX5900 TD128 card to replace my FX5600, but before I install it, could abyone tell me what the power connector on the card is for? Do I need to connect it to the power supply, or is there some other specific purpose for it? Sorry if its a silly question, but I don't want to risk damaging my new card and the manual does not mention it at all.
Grateful for your advice.
Thanks
Orcnobeard.I measured the current drawn from it, something like 3A from the 12V and 3A from the 5V so that's about 50W, way more than just powering the fans.
The card will work without the plug, but the fans won't spin and the card will prevent you from entering 3D mode to prevent overheating. -
