HPE-470f built in SD card reader reads all cards as write protected

WIN 7 Professional 64 bit, SP 1 and all updates, latest Bios and drivers installed, HPE-470f
The SD card reader used to work fine.  Putting in any chip now, the device sees the chip, reports it has to be formated (not true) and then when it tries, says it can't complete.  Disk management shows the drive is write protected.  I suspect the internal switch inside the reader is stuck or broken.
have tried:  blowing all the dust out of the reader, spraying contact cleaner into the device, trying multiple chips (all of which work fine in my cameras both before and after trying them in the HP reader.
Any suggestions?

Hi,
The internal switch could be broken as you suspect.  You didn't indicate that you tried any problem determination procedures so try the below suggestion.
Try this HP posted procedure.
Memory card readers have been in the past built flimsy by some manufacturers.  I had to replace two units in my PC during the last three of years.
Try formatting a supported memory card for your PC using the HP format utility.  See message #15.
Some have even tried using tape over the media card switch to build it up some in case the reader can't detect the switch position. It's a risky trick as the tape could get stuck inside the reader.

Can't record to SD cards. tried electronic cleaner spray. did not last

    Sean'
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. Yes I sprayed the cleaner into the SD card slot and shortly I was able to record to the card and any other card I wanted to. But the fix was short lived. I have no trouble reading all SD cards, just saving data and formatting fails. The cards all work in an Ezonics card R/W for the USB ports on my laptop.  I have the HP Pavilion dv6910us laptop. I used Radio Shack Non-Flammable Control/Contact cleaner & Lubricant.
Guess what? While I was typing my reply I thought I would check to see if the slot was still inoperative for storage and formatting and it is working again.  Info you can pass on to others I guess. The cleaner I used does have the habit of working slowly on some things I've used it on. A remote key fob for my car had a dirty contact somewhere inside it. I drenched the circuit board with the cleaner. It still did not work but a week later I tried it again and it worked and after 2 months is still working. Go figure.

  • Read-Only SD Card(s) - used to be able to read/write

    Hello all,
I have searched teh forum and found a few similar threads but I believe my case is different.
For all 3 of my SD cards, they appear as read-only in my MBP (running 10.6.8), whether I connect them via the built-in card reader or via my camera (Panasonic GF1) hooked up to my MBP via USB.
I used to be able to import photos into iPhoto and then delete them from the card but this does not work any more (I do not even get prompted any more) as the card(s) is now read-only (Get Info tells me "Sharing & Permissions: You can only read"). Indeed if I try to delete, drag and drop a file onto it or even erase from disk utility, it will not let me.
Now, most threads dealing with this issue point to the card reader being faulty (or even the lock switch being in the wrong position). I am fairly sure this is not the case here as:
    1) the behaviour occurs both through the built-in card-reader and the camera connection and
    2) the camera does not "think" that the card is read-only, it can take new pictures, delete or format the card (note that I tried to "lock" the card with the switch and in that case the camera complains and cannot do anything with the card).
Moreover this occurs with all three cards.
On the other hand, my IPhone connected via USB is not locked to "read-only" (for example IPhoto asks me and does delete photos after import).
Thanks very much for any help on this - this is very puzzling!

If you are using a DSLR camera, like for example a Canon 60D, there may be an option to use a "Low-Level Formatting" on the card. This should make it writable when putting it into the computer.
To test this (and confirm it works) I did the following:
    Hardware Used:
    Canon 60D camera body
    Sandisk 32GB SDHC Extreme Card
Macbook Pro 15" (mid 2010 model) with built-in SD card slot.
    Steps:
Place SDHC card into camera (SD card may work as well). Navigate through menu until you arrive at settings that allow the camera to format the card. There may be an option to format it "low-level", which you would then select.
-Note that all files on card will be erased permanently.-
After the camera formats, eject the card from the camera, and place inside the built-in SD slot on the Macbook.
The card should automatically mount, containing both read and write priviledges.
    Hope that helps.

  • Internal card reader thinks SD card is in "read only" mode??

I just took some pictures with my digital camera which use SD cards.
I then took the card out of my camera and put it into the built in SD reader on my 13" MacBook Pro. (same way as I always do)
However, the Finder thinks my card is in "read only mode" as I can not delete or add pictures on the card. I took out the card and toggled the read-only switch thinking maybe it got stuck or something, and tried it again. Still no luck.
Then, I tried a USB card reader. That reader detected the card, and let me read and write to the card.
This is the first time this has ever happened.
Any ideas why the internal card reader wouldn't anything other then read the card while my USB card reader could read and write no problem?
    Thanks,
    Scott

I reset the PRAM but it did not help.
I think I found the solution though.
It depends on the way you insert the card.
You can't just slide it in. Rather, you have to push it in a special way (which I can't describe or remember)
So I guess the answer is, if the card comes up as read-only, take out the card, and push it in a different way until to comes up correctly.
I replicated this issue twice so that is why I believe it is the alignment that is the problem.
If it gets any worse, I'll probably have to get the slot serviced but considering I only use the slot once a month or so, its not top priority. Too bad I couldn't just have an extra USB port, or an express card slot - but apparently Apple thinks SD cards are more important...

  • MBP won't read my SD card?

    So here's the issue:
My MacBook Pro won't read my 4GB SD card from my camera. I was able to transfer all of my images earlier this afternoon but now it plainly won't show up. I checked Finder, I checked Disk Utility, and nothing. The Nikon software doesn't recognize it either. It's not like I have a whole boatload of photos to transfer (I only have four pics to transfer). Earlier, I installed the software after I ejected the card, but did not put it back in afterwards. Could it have something to do w/ the software I just downloaded?

If you are using a DSLR camera, like for example a Canon 60D, there may be an option to use a "Low-Level Formatting" on the card. This should make it writable when putting it into the computer.

  • SD card not mounting in card slot, mounts only with USB card reader

    hi all,
I have browsed this forum "Ports and interfaces on the MacBook Pro (2008 and Later)" for a bit and searched for "SD" but did not find any posts directly related to my issue here.
I have a Kingston 512Mb card which mounts in my MacBook Pro only when I insert it in a cardreader inserted in the USB port.
Directly in the memory card slot it does not mount. Other SD cards do mount. I did not yet recognise a pattern in what mounts and does not mount.
I need to mount this specific SD card in the memory slot because bigger, newer SD cards are not accepted by the device I am using the card in (an iRex iLiad).
The Kingston 512Mb SD card is formatted as MS-DOS (FAT16) according to Disk Utility.
Any suggestions on what I could try? Buying other 512Mb cards is not that easy, there is not a lot available and only the ones on this list http://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/IliadSD_Memorycardslist are supported by the device.
    TIA!

Within a year or two, a device that is limited to 512MB and smaller cards — and only certain ones of those — will probably be completely useless. As you've found, no one else is interested in buying such tiny cards any more, and their production is likely to be discontinued very soon.
This does nothing to explain why your card can't be read in the built-in reader, though. One thing to check is the position of the "lock" slider on the card; a small handful of other posters with similar problems have reported that if the slider isn't securely locked or unlocked (I don't recall which), it gets disturbed as the card is inserted, and the card can't be read as a result.
If that doesn't solve the problem for you, just use your USB reader when you have to read that particular card. As you say, your other (presumably larger) cards are all read properly in the built-in reader, so you know the reader works. There may just be a minute manufacturing-tolerance problem with that particular card.

  • MacBook Pro won't read Sandisk SDHC cards since Lion 10.7.1 update

Hi all, just wondering if anyone else has had this problem. I know there are dozens of posts about SD cards not working with MacBook pros, but mine seems to have started when I installed the latest Lion update.
I have a high-end 13" early 2011 MBP and the cards I'm having trouble with are all Sandisk 4GB SDHC. Two are 'Extreme III's" and one is an Extreme II. The card reader is showing up in System Profiler, and a really old 2GB Sandisk card gets read fine, so there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the MBP hardware.
Similarly, I can read the cards fine via a USB adapter, so it's not the cards that are causing the problem.
I had successfully imported photos from the cards before upgrading to Lion, and also before installing the 10.7.1 update. So, it looks like the problem may be linked with the update, but this is purely an educated guess.
I've tried resetting the SMC to no avail.
Has anyone else experienced something like this?

I've got the same problem. I've got a late 2010 MacBook Pro unibody running Mac OS 10.7.1 on it. I installed the 10.7.1 updated most likely on 8/17/11 the day after it was released by Apple. Since then I was able to read SDHC cards as I shot a number of photos and videos to my cards and they worked fine.
I'm not sure what has changed since then, it wasn't as simple as the 10.7.1 update then it didn't work. This is the problem I'm having below, just started to experience this on 9/2/11. I tested with two 32GB SDHC cards, one 16GB SDHC card and one 2GB SD card. All cards were manufactured by Transcend.
    FAIL:
    * SDHC cards (16GB and 32GB) will not mount and isn't recognized by the MBP via the built-in SD card slot
    * SDHC cards (16GB and 32GB) will not mount and isn't recognized by the MBP via SanDisk 2.0 card reader connected via a short USB cable.
    * If I put any SDHC card into a SanDisk USB 2.0 reader that is connected to my USB hub (I gave it a try in case there was a power problem with the MBP USB system) the card is not recognized either.
    * Even Disk Utility will not see the card when inserted via built-in card slot or a reader.
    SUCCESS:
    * SD cards (2GB) mount fine when inserted either in the built-in SD card slot or via my SanDisk USB 2.0 reader.
    * If I leave the SDHC card in my camera (Canon 60D) and connect the camera to my MBP via USB I can import the images via Aperture.
    * If I put the SDHC card into the memory card slot reader of my HP inkjet printer (it has multiple card slots for different types) the card will mount normally like it is supposed to via the two failed methods above.
I'm also sending this info to Apple but wanted to post here since there are three inconvenient work-arounds.

  • Updated my iphone 3gs to the 5 ios and now my phone wont read my sim card when i reacticate it

updated my iphone 3gs to the 5 ios and now my phone wont read my sim card when i reactivate it.
Every time i connect it to itunes all it says is "There is no SIM card installed in the iphone you are attempting to activate." Even thought there is a sim card connected in my phone.

Is the SIM from a supported carrier?
Is the device carrier locked, officially unlocked, or hacked to be unlocked?
Has the SIM been reseated?  If not, try that.
Also, basic troubleshooting is reset, restart, restore.  Has any of that been tried?

My Olympic camera SD card doesn't fit into the SD card camera reader. Apple advised me to purchase the product in order to import photos to my IPad. How do I over ride this problem. How do I import photos from an Olympus FE-340 directly to my IPad?

Your camera uses an OLympic XD picture card http://www.amazon.com/Olympus-xD-Picture-Memory-202332-package/dp/B002LC2DQ4/ref =pd_sim_sbs_p_1 This card has different dimensions compared to an SD card.
You should be able to plug the cable that came with your camera into the camera connection kit to import the pics.

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014) will not read an SD card in the SDXC card reader. Does anyone know whats going on?

Hi David.  I don't have as modern a Macbook Pro as you, mine is a 2012 model, but perhaps I can help.  I often find that my SD card will not load when I first insert it.  I have to remove it and then put it into the slot again firmly.
You also haven't posted any information about the SD card.  What size is it, do you know how it is formatted, has it worked in that same mac previously, where did it come from, does it currently work in another device (such as your camera)?  This sort of information will help to narrow down the problem.
If you post some more information I'm sure people will try to help you.  In the meantime, if you look at your post again you should see "More Like This" at the bottom of the page and you may find an answer in some of those related posts.
    Hope that helps.

  • Iphoto doesn't read my memory card

Hi! I just switched to a mac so i don't really know my ways yet.
anyway, i was importing pictures to iphoto from a memory card using a USB memory card reader, then all of the sudden when i closed Iphoto and opened it again, my memory card can no longer be read.I tried my other CF and Memory sticks but with no luck.
I did eject the memory card properly. there was this one time though that i forgot to eject it and removed the memory card.
what do i do now? help!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. First lets get those photo off the card by dragging them to a folder on the desktop and import from there. Next delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder, reformat the card with the camera, take a couple of test shots and try again. See if that helps.
If the time you forgot to eject the card correctly was that last time you used the card then reformatting it with the camera should fix it.
For what its' worth I recommend uploading from a card reader to a folder on the desktop first. This assures that the files get safely on the hard drive before any other action is started. Then reformat the card for the next shoot using the camera. If you name that folder to describe what the photos are about the Event will also have that name. I also sequentially batch rename the files with the date of the shoot and a brief description.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Can anyone recommend a USB CF card reader that will work in my Macbook Pro Retina? My USB card readers for CF cards do not work

At present, the only way I can load photos from a CF card to my new Macbook Pro Retina is by loading them onto an external hard drive via an old PC that can accept either of my USB card readers, then plugging the external hard drive into my MBP. Neither the USB card reader or the cable that comes with the Canon HDSLR camera will transfer photos directly to my MBP. I find it unbelievable that I have to go to a PC to load photos because I can't do it with my new MBP.
Has anyone found a reliable USB CF card reader, or one that connects via thunderbolt or HDMI, at any price, that will work directly with the new MBP Retina?

    This is what we need:
Location photoshoot - we use the Canon EOS 5D  Mk II still camera & the Canon FX100 pro camcorder.
CF cards are: SanDisk Extreme UDMA & SanDisk Extreme Pro UDMA 6 for video (I think they are both Type II) My Mac recognises them both as FAT 32 format
My MBPRetina is on the latest version of Mountain Lion OSX 10.83
the files from the camcorder will transfer to my MacBook Pro Retina directly via the camera's cable but it is quite slow & it means I cannot continue to film while downloading files but this we can live with.
the files from the still camera Canon EOS 5D  Mk II will not transfer directly via the camera's cable - have yet to get the Canon software to download, but via the camera's cable will not help anyway as we need to have the still camera free to keep shooting.
We need to be able to take out the CF card from the first part of the shoot & download the still shots while just on the Macbook's battery power, while we insert a fresh CF card back into the still camera to continue with the next part of the shoot simultaneously (while the first card is downloading.)
The files from the first part of the shoot will be both in RAW (.CR2) & Jpeg format. We just need to quickly transfer the jpegs, then I do a quick sort, batch the best ones as black/white images, & use these in a client slideshow immediately after part 2 of the shoot.
Obviously we need fast data transfer speeds, & rely on the MBP's battery power while on a location shoot.
The card readers I have tried are an older specific CF card reader branded as Palm, & a USB 2 multi card reader branded as Travel Flash. With both readers, the lights on the readers flash on & off, & the MBP recognises the card & the files will even appear both in Finder & in i-Photo, so it starts importing, then aborts with an error message saying:
'The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “” can’t be read or written.
    (Error code -36)'
    & another message saying:
'the disk was not ejected properly'.
So it appears the MBP does read the CF cards but the card readers don't stay connected, no matter what angle I put them on or however many times I re-connect them.
Yes, they are probably cheap & I want to buy a decent one.
    So, in summary:
the card reader needs to work when the MBPR is only on battery power (I read in some forums that some USB card readers aren't so reliable on the laptop's battery power)
the card reader needs to be quite fast. I have read the USB 3 readers won't read CF cards at higher than USB 2 speeds. Is this true? Are the firewire connected ones faster, & if so, are they still reliable on the MBP's battery power?
From research, it appears my problem is associated with my specific model of Mac & platform, being MacBook Retina on Mountain Lion OSX Version 10.83. If any of the recommended card readers have been successful with this, plese let me know.
Thanks heaps for the suggestions so far.

hey, thanks for the reply but that isn't the issue. my issue is that the animation doesn't stay within the div container. I tried what you said via chrome console but that's more of a hack way of doing it. I should be able to contain the animation within the div that its being wrapped with but for some reason it is jumping outside the div container.
Does that make sense? Would be awesome if there was a walkthrough on how the edge animation settings worked. for example the code below. would i need to adjust something below for it to contstrain within the container?

    Successes:
iPad recognizes and displays *.jpg created in-camera.
    Problem statement:
File origin: all image files created with camera listed above.
Files created in camera (*.jpg & *.NEF (RAW), then transferred to desktop.  *.NEF files converted to *.jpg.  Reload files to SD card in *.jpg format only, iPad does not see / display images to be imported from SD card to iPad.
    Problem resolution attempts:
Format SD card using desktop, result - iPad does not recognize SD card
Format SD card using camera, result - iPad recognizes SD card
Try a different SD card (used two, see equipment above)
Test shot photo (*.jpg) in camera work only (no transfer to desktop), result iPad recognizes and displays image
    For *.jpgs on desktop
1st convert file names to same nomenclature (system of names) created by camera (DSC_001.jpg) (DSC underscore 3 digits file extension).
2nd load file into same folder that was created by camera on SD cards, result displayed one desktop originating test photo once only.  Subsequent attempts failed.
No difference in performance between the 2 SD cards.  In camera work displays but not transfer files from desktop to SD card
E-mail photos (15) to personal e-mail, open file with internet, copy to iPad, result iPad copies, loads, and displays images in camera roll.  I used same images I loaded to SD from desktop in attempt to keep everything equal.
Side note: I received a notification (push to my device) to from Apple to update software.  The operating system was updated to what I have now.  I don't recall if the one success I listed above was before or after the OS update.
    Discussion
Lighning cable advertised as useful in transfering images (pictures) to iPad.  I read prior to purchase what image files were supported.  I began with high hopes, and now I'm very deflated.
I've hacked and hacked and tried and read and tried and... I can't solve this problem.
A resolution (without additional expenditures) is greatly appreciated.  Thank you in advance to everyone for your consideration and help.
    Houston, Texas, United States

There's a step by step in the manual
    http://support.apple.com/manuals/
There is no specific naming convention beyond must be in the DCIM folder and  must have 8 character names. myphotos.jpg for example.
I've successfully used SD cards to import videos off my computer onto my iPad, they just have to be named right.
The reason for the work arounds is, in Apple's work flow, you use the camera kit only to interface with your camera, if you want to import from your computer, you use iTunes. So that's the methods they favor. Transferring from your computer to a card to your iPad via the kit is a non-supported work around, which is why you have to basically fool the iPad into thinking those images came directly from the camera.
