HPE430me graphics upgrade and cooling issues

Hello,
I have an HP Pavilion Elite 430me and wish to upgrade the installed Geforce 440 card to a Radeon 6870.
I have 4 questions:
1-Does the MS-7613 (Iona-GL8E) motherboard support PCIe 2.0 as it doesn't state it in the specifications page; it just says PCIe 16X? Bear in mind that it is an H57 based board.
2-Does the case allow space for the 10" graphics card?
3-Is the 460W PSU sufficient?
4-I live in Egypt and the temperatures here is quite hot during much of the year and the case only comes with a single 80mm fan; is overheating a possibility here considering that a Core i7 870 is also present? Is there any way to install another fan on this case?
Thanks

1-Pcie 2.0 is backward compatible.  Therefore, it should work fine.
I know, but I don't want to bottleneck my system...  I understand.  Using a PCIe 2.0 card will not bottleneck your system.
2- I don't believe that this card will fit.  I normally recommend staying under 9".
3-The HD Radeon 6870 requires a minimum of 500W.
Could you recommend a good card at this size and power limit?  If you mean for a 500W PSU, I suggest upgrading to at least 550W if that is your plan.  This will give you many more options for cards.  I like Corsair and OCZ.  Both of the PSU's in the links have 120mm fans.  This will help with cooling the computer.
As for a card, this is more difficult.  HP has their video cards made to their specs.  Therefore, it is difficult to know which cards would perform better.  However, I like XFX, BFG, EVGA, Sapphire and PNY in that order.  Here is a card that should perform to your needs.  This is based on a nVidia chip.  Also, here is a card based on an AMD/ATI chip.  Both cards are double profile (cover two slots).  This means that one of the PCIe x1 slots will be covered.  It is always a good idea to read as many of the customer reviews as possible.  They will give you the straight scoop without manufacturer hype.
4-The AMD/ATI cards come with their Catalyst Control Center.  This software suite allows you to control the fan speed of the card.
I meant the case: is the single 80mm fan sufficient, and if not, can I add more fans?  I understand.  Controlling the fan on the video card will help the entire computer.  The majority of heat can be generated by the card.
If you have more questions let me know.

  • Wifi, power and cooling issues with my MacBook Pro.

I've had my MacBook Pro for about 2 years and I've been really pleased with its performance from work I've thrown at it. I initially got this MacBook Pro refurbished from the Mac store and it has a Apple Care protection plan. Although this past year I've noticed several issues that are probably hardware related. First, my MacBook's WiFi does not receive WiFi signals from the great distances it used to anymore. The times I can pick up WiFi are within like 5 yards from my wireless router. Second, I'm having an issue with the power. This past week, it seems my Macbook Pro does not run off the battery anymore. It only powers on when connected into the power supply. If I unplug the power supply, my Macbook turns off. It does not revert to the battery which is strange. Third, cooling seems to be a problem. The Macbook Pro is getting very hot. It burns my lap when it is holding there. The cooling problem has lasted since I got my Macbook back in January of 2007. I thought it was normal since I would load the CPU with some graphics intensive games. Now the Macbook Pro gets hot to doing some less CPU intensive tasks like surfing the web or word processing. I have noticed, a decrease in performance, longer boot times, loading of web browsers, and word processing applications. Would this be the best time to consider taking my Macbook Pro and for repair with apple care? I'd like to trouble shoot these issues to know exactly why these problems are happening. I have a feeling it could be due to the Macbook Pro getting hot. As for cooling I go by the manual and place it on a table or hard surface, or my lap. I pretty much want to know what is wrog and how to prevent issues like this in the future.
    Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It sounds like you have several issues:
I don't know why your MBP can only receive wireless signals from 5 feet away. Unless possibly the antenna has worked loose. But I'm just guessing.
Regarding the power, is your battery still good? Have you tried resetting the SMC?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411?viewlocale=en_US
Regarding the heat issue, have you tried running the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test? If you check your fans with iStatPro, are both running at an appropriate speed for the heat?
Also, have you checked in Activity Monitor for any out of control processes which might be running in the background and hogging the CPU?
A good place to start would be with the AHT. Since you have Applecare, you should also have a Tech Tool Deluxe disc, and you can run that too. Should anything turn up in the form of an error code, that would indicate a hardware problem. Write down the code and call Apple to arrange for repair.
If you have access to an Apple Store, you could also just take your Mac in for evaluation.
    Good luck!

  • Upgrade and internet issues

I recently installed Arch 64 and have been having a couple of issues:
1.When I installed it I connected to the internet and tried "pacman -Syu" to upgrade my system. The download went fine( although a little slow) but when it came to the installation it spit out some junk about files already being in the filesystem and at the end something about errors occurring and no packages being upgraded. I can't even install my video drivers because it needs some files to be upgraded.
2.At first I had internet just fine but now it wouldn't connect. I have a PPPoE (username+password) connection. Also, when booting it says "eth0 timed out". I had another computer before this one. I had  installed Arch 32 and had everything setup properly. But this time I need a 64 bit edition due to rendering purposes.
    Any help is welcome. Thanks.
By the way, I have kind of mixed up shifts so I may not be able to answer you right away.

Thanks. The link worked. I managed to install my video drivers as a test but I somehow broke the system. I'm with a fresh installation but eth0 still times out when booting. I shutdown the Wake-On-LAN (I read it somewhere) but it still doesn't help. Since I can't connect to the internet I can't ping anything. Sorry.
This is my MB: Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3L - RTL8168C(P) PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC
EDIT: I booted LinuxMint (32 bit edition) and the internet worked just fine. It's weird because they both use the rp-pppoe plug-in. Is it 64 bit related? Is it my MB related? Any assistance would be great.

  • RE1000: 1. Firmware upgrade and strange issues. 2. WPS 'on' despite being clearly disabled

    1. WPS shows 'on' in the RE1000's web status page even though it shows disabled in the wireless security page!
    2. The unit seemed to be acting up multiple times ("attempting to connect" or whatever the exact message is) in the middle of both the firmware upgrade to 1.0.01 and the subsequent firmware downgrade to 1.0.00
Luckily it did NOT get bricked!
It also at times would just stop responding or redirect to to the erouter page, despite clearly being in the RE1000 web admin pages and clicking wireless survery links etc.!
    Bizarre!
It may be that it needed rebooting / resetting, but it happened during the first upgrade.
    3. It also said 'authentication / authorization failed' when I attempted to manually connect to my AP in the 'Site Survey' screen. However, when I then go to 'WLAN statistics' it shows Status:  Associated anyway.
    Bizarre!
Has anyone else seen any of this?

What is the make and the model number of your router? The RE1000 is meant to extend the range of an 802.11n network. If attempting to extend the signal for a traditional 802.11g router you will not achieve the desired performance because it is not optimized to extend standard 802.11G signals.
So if you are using n-technology router I suggest you to reconfigure the RE1000..
Here is the link for the configuration of the RE1000

I am using Linksys's own E4200 which is their current top of the line consumer router (802.11n 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz and 450 MBps on 5 GHz).
Thanks for the suggestion, but my RE1000 has been configured perfectly since the beginning.
I also do not have WPS enabled (although the one screen says it is while the other setup screen clearly shows it is off) and other than the flashing light (and strange behavior / bugs), it works nicely as far as the actual intended functionality is concerned.
I had the same flashing light issue with my E4200 router, which Cisco finally acknowledged was an issue on their end (which I was convinced all along given how many others had the same exact issue) and which they fixed in the latest E4200 firmware (1.0.03) - see release notes.
I suspect the RE1000 has a similar code defect (bug) that happens under a specific set of circumstances (which explains why not all owners are affected).
Hopefully they will address it soon.

  • SQL Server Express 2005 to 2014 upgrade and Uninstallation issues

We have client application running SQL Server Express that connects to a SQL Server 2012 server.  We are attempting to upgrade from Microsoft SQL 2005 express to Microsoft SQL Server 2014
express – but are having difficulties – especially with uninstall.
Our understanding is that we needed to follow the following steps:
First we install Microsoft SQL 2005 express SP4 as required silently
    Start /wait SQLEXPR.exe /qn ACTION=UPGRADE INSTANCENAME="SQLEXPRESS" UPGRADE=SQL_Engine SAPWD=<password>
    SQLACCOUNT="NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM" SQLPASSWORD= SECURITYMODE="SQL"
Then try upgrading with Microsoft SQL Server 2014 express, we use following command to do it silently
    SQLEXPR.exe /q /ACTION=upgrade /INSTANCENAME=SQLEXPRESS /ISSVCAccount="NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM" /IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS
    We see following
In Control Panel -> Uninstall or change program, we have all the instances listed 2005, 2008, 2012 and 2014.
How do we uninstall the instance?  , We try uninstalling 2014
But it is not cleanly uninstalled.
    Questions:
Is there any way for clean upgrade from Microsoft SQL 2005 express SP3 to Microsoft SQL 2014 express?
Is there any specific steps suggested to uninstall upgraded SQL 2014 express from system?
Are we doing anything wrong in commands for silent upgrade?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello,
After you perform an in-place upgrade it’s normal to find the binaries and references of the old version of SQL Server on the Start Menu and Control Panel -> Programs and Features. That’s by design. After you have successfully upgraded an instance, you can
    remove the old binaries.
IfIf you find some remnants after uninstalling SQL Server 2014, please perform the following steps to manually uninstall it:
    1. Uninstall all SQL Server 2014 components you can using Control Panel -> Programs and
    Features
    2. Backup the registry.
    3. Delete the following keys in regedit:
        --HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server
        --HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer
    4. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall and delete
all the sub-keys referencing SQL Server.
    5. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services and delete all the keys referencing
    SQL Server.
    6. Rename all the SQL Server folders in the computer like
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server and subfolders.
    Hope this helps.

  • Super drive and cooling issues

Whenever I play a CD of DVD in my new super drive it comes out very hot even if it was only in the machines for a few minutes. Also, my cooling fans never seem to increase or decrease. I'm not even sure they are on. I can hear them work at maximum speed when I use the Hardware test on the Install disc but I get complete silence when I run the G5 normally. The back of my Mac becomes quite hot after awhile and I am afraid of melting something. Any suggestions?

Hello John and welcome to discussions,
Its pretty normal for this to occur. In fact it's just plain normal and to be expected.
Sounds like you have a 100% happy Mac there.
    Hope that helps you

  • OS 10.2.1 upgrade and bluebooth issues

Since the recent upgrade the bluetooth connection to my car audio keeps falling out. Also when it reconnects the audio works but the data on the song, artist etc is not displayed on the car media screen. Has anyone else encountered this problem?

After upgrading to 10.2.1 and also upgrading Say It,I did experience some bluetooth problems. After removing the Say it app my BlueTooth connection started working properly. After about a week I reinstall Say It and my BlueTooth problem started immediately. I am currently operating my phone without Say It and my phone and bluetooth connections works great.
My wife and daughter have Z10s and my son has Z30. They do not use Say It and they have 10.2.1 There BlueTooth connections are working properly.

  • 1.1.4 upgrade and restore issue...

Phone working fine this AM. Came into work put phone in cradle and it indicated an upgrade is available. Well the exact same thing happened as happened with 1.1.3 upgrade. Phone crashed completely. Now attempting restore of phone and it is "stuck" at the "Preparing iPhone for restore..." dialogue box (now for the 4th time and for at least 20 minutes this time).
iTunes is the most current version as well as I have removed and reloaded iTunes twice now.
Normally iTunes works fine. Any suggestions as I really do not feel like or have the time to drive the 50 miles to my "local" Apple store?

I have almost exactly the same problem, although I get past the "prepare iPhone..." point and start the restore before I lock up. I did get a few hours use of the phone after the 1.1.4 upgrade (absolutely no problems with 1.1.3, I probably should have waited to upgrade) but after the 1.1.4 upgrade the iPod module was screwed up, not syncing many of my songs, show the wrong or blank album art in coverflow, and other glitches. Attempts to sync either failed with "Device Timed Out" (the iPhone would kill the connection in the middle of a sync) or finished without syncing (or sometimes removing) songs I had on the iPhone.
I tried to restore but am now locked in "Recovery Mode" each time I try to restore. I am trying to do this through iTunes on Windows at my office (the only machine I have always synced with, although I do have a Mac at home). Right now iTunes itself is frozen in the restore cycle and I think I will have to hard kill it to start again.

  • Mac Pro Quad core power and cooling concerns

My current MDD 867 is getting a bit long in the tooth. I am looking at getting a quad mac pro this fall. Waiting till MacWorld is a verrrrry long wait option. Did I mention that the MDD cooked off one of my drives recently?
What I plan on building is the following :
    Mac Pro Quad 3 GHz
    4 Gb ram
    Ati X1900 (extra cooling fan?)
    250 GB boot drive
    500 GB Barracuda mirror raid
    16X SuperDrive
Knowing the power and cooling issues that the MDD has intimately, this new machine configuration gives me pause. Can anyone attest to the power and cooling capabilities of the Mac Pro? Will the above configuration be ok? How about possible fan speed noise? The MDD, with new power supply is a noise beast!
    TIA
    Poirot

    Thanks for the reply.
To be a a little more clear, when I referred to quad, I meant 2x dual-core processors.
The raid was for storage of my images. I have an external firewire drive for backups of the system drive, and other important files. Photography is my hobby, and need to build a new workstation to store and edit the images.
The UPS was a good idea. That was in the back of my mind. I could try and bring an APC SU2200XL from work
I was hoping that Apple would announce the new Mac Pro this fall. I know that the raw processor speed difference is not that much, but the FSB speed difference could make a nice improvement. I just didn't want to get one now, and then 10 days later, there is a new one. I would be really mad at myself. I was looking at the refurb models. The price difference between the 4 and 8 core models is $100, when available. The downside is that the 8-core model does not come with the Ati card.
The allure of Leopard is not that strong to me. We are running the beta at work, and while nice, it is still too buggy.
The main intent of the thread was to make sure that the specs'd out model would not generate too much heat, and suck up too much power from the power supply. I know that the MDD compared tot he Mac Pro is night and day, but a little reassurance is always helpful.
    Thanks
    Mack

  • N91 WLAN (WiFi) and Bluetooth Issues.

    Hi Everyone,
I am having some issues with my new N91. I recently had the firmware upgraded, and the issues have not improved at all. I'm hoping someone out there has faced and solved some similar issues, or perhaps that you can point me in the right direction towards finding a solution of my own.
WiFi (WLAN). Okay, the N91 comes with WiFi built in. I have been able to find networks, and browse the internet on my phone, in Infrastructure mode. It is pretty simple. The problem has to do with encryption.
On my home network, I use WPA encryption with TKIP. The N91 configuration screens give me the option of using WPA with TKIP, but the phone won't connect. I tried changing to WEP on my home network, and configuring the N91 to use that encryption instead, but it also did not work.
Since I use other computers on my network with WiFi, turning off encryption is not an option. I did test the phone and the router with encryption off, it connects.
The issue is, the N91 will only connect to un-encrypted networks. This is fine for free hotspots, but I want to sync with my home PC via WLAN, send email and use the phone via VOIP. I also need to connect to encrypted networks on the road.
Has anyone managed to connect to an encrypted network with an N91? Do you know what specific hardware you were connecting to, and what protocols you used?
The second issue is Bluetooth. I drive a 2006 BMW M3 with bluetooth support. My old phone (Sony t630) connected to the car via bluetooth flawlessly. It shared the phonebook with my car, and automatically diverts calls to the car when I'm driving. I can answer the phone via a button on my steering wheel, which automatically cuts out the radio and allows me to take calls while driving.
The Nokia "pairs" with my car. However, regardless of what I do, it will not share the phone book, nor will it transfer audio to my car's sound system. According to the Nokia documentation, the pairing process requires that a code be entered for the bluetooth device on the phone, and for the phone on the bluetooth device. I cannot set a code in my car (the bluetooth device), since that is not an option. I can set the code on the phone for my car, and the phone then reports "Pairing Complete". Setting a code on the car was not required for my trusty old Sony. Though the N91 claims "Pairing Complete" there does not appear to be any mechanism for activating the car handsfree via the phone, and the car does not automatically take a call if the phone rings while paired. (On the Sony, one can "Send Call" to a blue tooth device, if the device doesn't automatically take the call, or if the pairing takes place after the call has been initiated.)
Does anyone know of a work around to get the phone to pair for audio (I can live without the phone book). Does anyone know of a third party application that will fix the blue tooth on the Nokia to make it work more effectively with my car?
Any information that can be provided on either of these topics will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
    Dan

    Hi,
Thanks for the reply. Starting with the bluetooth aspect of your question. I can't say for sure which profiles the Bluetooth on BMW supports (still researching). I can say that my Sony t630 supports all of the protocols you listed, though I can't say for certain about the "AG" aspects. It lists:
    File Transfer
    OBEX
    Object Push Protocol
    Handsfree
    Headset
And several others that I don't think are relevant to this particular issue. As I said, my phone lists "Handsfree" not "Handsfree AG". I'm still trying to research what if any distinction exists there.
The important point is that the bluetooth on the BMW isn't wholly defective. It does work with at least one phone. The bluetooth on my N91 hasn't worked with the car, but I have no other hardware to test with. I don't think it is defective either. I believe they both function, I just need to figure out what needs to be done for them to play together.
I think there are two questions that I'd like to find answers to. Has anyone ever modified a bluetooth profile on an N91 (or other Nokia)? Is it possible to add bluetooth profiles that don't already exist on the phone?
As for the point I made about my N91 not connecting to encrypted networks. I am correct to assert that it does not connect to unencrypted networks, though syntactically I shouldn't say "The N91" since it implies too much.
Semantics aside, my N91 can't connect to encrypted networks so far. My research on this site (and others) indicates other users have faced the same issue, and none of those threads came to a resolution that I could find. Searching this site, and others, I had found no documented cases of an N91 functioning on an encrypted network. Since posting (on another site) I have found one user who has had success, but that user hasn't yet responded to my question of how exactly he pulled it off.
In the absense of any evidence explaining how to connect an N91 to an encrypted network, and the prevalence of people expressing difficulty with it; I think it is correct to say "The N91 will only connect with un-encrypted networks."
I'd really like to be wrong on that statement, since I own the phone and I want to connect to an encrypted network. However, I haven't been corrected yet. So, if you can point me to a thread or discussion explaining what settings were used to make a successful connection on an encrypted WLAN of any type, that would be great.
To anyone reading this or helping out, I really appreciate your time and attention. Please let me know if I can provide any other information to help with this question, or on any other topics.

  • Weird graphics and other issues with internet explorer in all versions.

One of our laptops has an issue with their Internet Explorer. First, whenever the user logs on and starts internet explorer and navigates to any website, the website loads for a bit but then immediately displays a "Page cannot be displayed" error.
Every single time. If we try browsing again/refreshing the page it loads fine. But during regular browsing, we might get that page again.
Another issue that happens is sometimes the graphics logos won't load properly. See screenshot:
    http://i.imgur.com/0usOPpu.jpg
And this happens a lot. If this won't happen, the websites will only load with half its formatting missing.
    Now we have:
-Thoroughly checked computer for viruses. Several full scans have been done with MalwareBytes with no issues found. Microsoft Security Essentials has been installed, full scan done, no viruses/spyware/adware found.
-We have tried upgrading to IE11. Same issue. Downgraded to IE10. Same issue. Downgraded to IE9, same issue yet again. IE was Reset each time.
We checked if it could be a network issue, but none of the other computers connected to the same switch has issue like that.
    Any suggestions/ideas to try?

    Hi,
I suggest you temporary disable antivirus and firewall, then check the result.
You may try the steps from the links below to check the issue:
"Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" error
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/956196/en-us
Internet Explorer "Page Cannot be Displayed" error due to Bad Proxy Server Timeout
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2551554
You may also refer to the computer or device manufacturer website and try installing the latest version of chipset, graphics card and video card drivers and check.
    Hope it helps.

Now we have upgraded them to 10.8.5. after upgrading having display issues after launching the simulators, we are unable to view the icons we need to move the simulator (into different places) to view the icons.
Also we are having Mac book pro's (Late 2009 & 2010) after upgrading them to 10.8.5. Unable to launch the mac, getting only white screen with apple icon.
Let me know is there any specific Hardware (Graphic Cards) we need to use for the same.
Please provide me the early solutions.

    Hi, try this first...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.

  • G6-2235TX - Windows 8.1 Graphics Upgrade Issue

After upgrading to Windows 8.1 I don't have the option to use the Radeon card anymore instead of the useless Intel one. I have tried reinstalling the software (using HP's SP59936) but after doing so no longer have the option that I used to have when I right clicked the desktop. Also the laptop used to pop up a query asking if I wanted to use the Radeon over the Intel when doing something that benefitted from 3D graphics.
Like a huge number of others I am very annoyed that I was conned into purchasing a laptop that promised a discrete video card but in reality doesn't have direct access to it however am now even more cheesed off that the 8.1 upgrade doesn't seem compatible with the existing driver software.
Can someone suggest how I can the software working again (is it an issue I can fix or do I have to wait for HP to release new video software ?). I would much prefer a Bios upgrade allowing access to the Radeon directly so I can update the standard drivers from AMD directly myself but it seems that this is now unlikely given the number of complaints in this and other forums about the issue. I doubt I will buy another HP laptop given the video hassles everyone has had.

    Hi Terry TwopointOh
Many thanks for getting back to me and I assume as no-one else is complaining about the move to 8.1 and video issues that it was only limited to my setup.
Yes the driver you refer to is the driver I was using and I was unable to get the option to use the switchable graphics when I right-clicked the mouse and trying other ways to find the option. Despite reinstalling the driver two or three times I could no longer get the AMD switchable graphics option. After one more attempt the option suddenly returned (ie the right click option to use switchable graphics) but when I tried to run the screen savers (which normally would also pop up an option to use the AMD card over the Intel) they would just crash - obviously trying to switch to using the AMD card but not finding whatever it was they needed.
In the end I gave up and as I had a new SSD arrive in the mail I took the opportunity to reinstall Windows 8.0 afresh and everything is now back the way it was. I think I will avoid updating to 8.1 for a while as I couldn't see any noticeable difference over 8.0 to be honest considering how long the upgrade process took.
I far prefer Windows 7 which has been extremely stable on an older laptop that I have. With Windows 8 everything seems hit and miss as to whether something will work properly or not. If all the drivers for the hardware components were readily available for this laptop under Windows 7 I would revert immediately however HP advised me that I could not obtain drivers for everything.
    Thanks again for your help

    Thanks b noir,
I tried this solution without success. After FixIt ran and didn't find a problem, either in looking for issues with "software upgrade" or "iTunes" it kindly offered to help me uninstall iTunes. I had thought of this as a possibilty but it seems to me that if you do that you lose a lot of "non-native-to-Apple" information you might have entered. I did this once and recovery was painfull. Is there a way to uninstall iTunes without losing all of that sort of thing? Any help would be appreciated.
