  • Freezing cursor

Have just migrated to a used Mac Pro. Getting a freezing cursor erratically. Was happening with installed 10.6.5 and still happening with upgraded 10.6.6.
I am using an old Apple cinema display with an ADC to DVI adapter. Not sure what other info might be needed but very much appreciate any help!

    Hi to all,
I have also this kind of problem and other similar ones, and it is very frustrating.
I have a later 2009 Mac Pro model with Snow Leopard.
First: Since long time intermitted my wireless keyboard becomes unresponsive in the kind that I'm not able to write. The only way to write than is with the help of the keyboard viewer. I have to restart the computer and mostly it's responsive again. I got another new keyboard in exchange from Apple, but it didn't solved the problem. It often happen when I'm working in Aperture or Photoshop, but it happened also in the Finder.
Second: Since a few weeks I often experience that the 'connection is lost' from my wireless mouse, and with waiting a few seconds it's again 'connected'. Today it happen even within seconds going on and off erratically all the time. Mouse is paired and full battery.
Third: Now in safari I wanted to write, so the pointer changed into a curser but I was unable to write anything. I was able to move the curser but was not able to shut down the computer, so I had to use the power button. After restart the same again.
I'm getting so confused. Don't know whether it could have something to do with the operating system or is something wrong with the bluetooth. I do not have any USB mouse here, so I cannot compare.
    Disk verified, repaired, all updated.
What else can I do? I'm living on an island, hate to bring that heavy thing back for checking.
    Thank's for any help.

Got my first Toshiba with my first Windows 8 experience so IDK.
But, I play some games where the spacebar its needed to play the game, holding spacebar and double clicking on a map it allows u to select whatever u want. With this Satellite L850-1P9 I cant do it, holding spacebar freezes the cursor.
    Any idea?
    Thks

    > the problem is in, or because Im using windows 8
So in such case you will need to use Win 7
    > or because notebook, cause the spacebar as the function of zoom + to.
Usually the notebook supports function buttons.
The space bar is one of such button which provides additional functionality.
Usually this happens if you press Fn + Space bar.
But you can also disable this function in BIOS (Advanced -> System Configuration)

  • Firewire without power / Freezing cursor

2 Problems (maybe connected with each other):
    - Firewire 400 & 800 on my MacPro ports don't seem to have any electric power to run my FW800-HD (while the HD works perfectly on my Macbook Pro)
    - Cursor/Mouse/Keyboard is freezing every (about) 30min. for about 10 seconds, then works again.
Might there be a hardware problem ?
    Thanks for helping

I agree - I've just got a new Mac Pro and I'm having the same problem - my time machine which is connected via FW 800 to 400 cable often disconnects and the mouse freezes and disconnects !
    Not very good !!!!

  • Itunes slow start up, constant freezing/cursor spinning indefinitely...

Itunes has been freezing constantly, cursor spinning, hard restarts a part of life now. Many freezes in iMovie as well.
    Have a G3 ibook - too old?
Could it be the external drive that all music is stored on? I have 60 GB of music on an external drive (through firewire).
    Help!

But by the time I can get to the desktop to open Activity Monitor, the problem has passed. It's all between the chime and logging in. I've looked in Console but don't know how to interpret what I see there. Do these mean anything?

  • Randomly freezing cursor on NEW Macbook Pro

I have a new 17" Macbook Pro - 2 weeks old. I noticed almost immediately that there was an issue with either the trackpad being unresponsive OR the computer
is thinking before acting. Anyway, the cursor freezes randomly - sometimes for a second, and sometimes for several seconds. I've been very conscious of how I'm tracking, I have everything turned off in the trackpad preferences.
Is this a software or hardware issue and will I need to bring the unit in for
    exchange or repair?
    thank you.

Reformat the drive using 'Zero all data' under Security Options and reinstall your system. If it still does it after that, have it looked at.

  • Cursor freezes, cursor freezes

Has anyone found a solution to  system freezing at stratiup after upgrading to Mavericks?

    Hey advartec,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are experiencing performance issues with your Mac after upgrading to Mavericks. The following resources may help to resolve your issue:
OS X Mavericks: If your Mac runs slowly

Mac OS X: How to troubleshoot a software issue
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1199
(for the latter, you may want to refer to the section titled “If the issue occurs in various applications, or in Mac OS X”)

  • Freezing cursor problem

I have a Waveform Chart with a moving cursor where the x-axis is time and the y-axis represents various analyzer readings.
At random times, the cursor leaves a marker at a specific point but also continues its regular movement across the chart. This time point also coincides with an offset error in my analyzer readings, so I would like to understand what could cause the cursor to split and become frozen like this.
(by the way, I am using Labview 5.1!)

Are you certain that you are using a Waveform Chart. Charts usually don't have cursors. Sometimes people use graphs as charts so that they can get added functionality. If that what is happening, there might be something odd in the code of it that actually creates more than one cursor or a mark of some sort.

  • Whenever my Imac sleeps, my screen freezes/cursor "peels" off current screen

Since downloading Moutain Lion (10.8.1) after my computer goes to "sleep", when I awake it, the screen is frozen.  The cursor does not operate correctly, rather it peels off the screen, revealing a screen underneath.  I have to restart to resume normal operation.  One very friendly Apple support staff had me verify disk and address permissions; it did not help.  Another seemed confused by my question and wasn't helpful.  Any ideas?

Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Sat A500 - keypad/mousepad freeze - cursor and typing spaces non-responsive

Issue with my new notebook, several times the cursor has become non-responsive to the mousepad, and whatever is on the screen fails to recognise me typing on the keyboard. This seems to happen whilst I am using the mousepad.
I've hit the mousepad on/off thinking this may have been bumped, but it doesn't affect the failure to respond.
Could I be performing some function I'm not aware of? Any other ideas?

It is not easy to understand what is wrong there and such issues can be checked testing all this.
With original preinstalled OS touchpad should work except it is disabled with small button or with FN+F9 key combination.
This with typing is also a little bit mysterious for me. If you use several windows (several different applications) be sure you try to type when the window is active.
Please don't understand me wrong but best thing you can do is to ask somewhere for help. Best address is Toshiba service. They can put the notebook on the desk and check what happen exactly.
Here on this virtual world I can just say: if you want to test it on proper way reinstall OS using HDD recovery image (factory state) and test functionality again. By default everything should works well. If not there must be some hardware failure.

  • I have 2 iMacs with Maverick. One shows DVD's requiring Adobe Flash fine the other plays for a while then I get parts of the DVD presentation that freezes cursor movement but the video

I have two iMacs both with Maverick. When working with Training DVD's requiring Adobe Flash there is no trouble with one iMac but the other will have problems. The DVD will run fine and then there will be a break (5-10 seconds) in the audio but not the video. When the audio comes back on the presentors movement of the curson will be frozen. Have I disabled something on the one computers but not the other to cause this problem?

  • PowerBook G4 freezes, can't restart until it cools down

I have had a problem in the past week with my PowerBook. After using the computer for a while, the machine will freeze (cursor doesn't respond to trackpad action). Can't force quit applications or do anything that is related to keyboard input. The only thing I can do is shutdown by holding the power button for a couple of seconds. After this, if I try to restart, the machine starts with the chime sound and the fan starts, but the display is off and nothing happens after that. Tried safe boot ( pressing shift) and it still doesn't work. Tried reseting PMU (Shift-Control-Option-Power) and it's still the same. Tried booting from CD (pressing C) and nothing happens. Only after an hour of so of the machine being off, can I power it up.
Anybody has any insight on what could be happening?
Thanks in advance for any response.

Sounds like the power manager is overheating, or there is bad RAM, or something hardware wise that is causing the circuitry to overheat. Make sure you are following these tips for heat:

  • Mavericks 10.9.4 complete system freeze on any webpage with Flash

Been running 10.9.4 without problems on this rMBP 15" 2.3GHz, 16GB RAM.  Today it started freezing when I tried to load a flash video from comedy central.  Complete system freeze, cursor stuck, no feedback, hard restart required.  I thought it might be Silverlight at first so I disallowed it in Safari and it seemed to be ok, but after loading another video the system froze again.
It now occurs for all browsers I try, Safari, Firefox, Chrome.  I have now *uninstalled Adobe Flash* via Adobe's uninstaller, and disabled extensions in Safari.  When I go to youtube.com the system freezes completely again.
I have run Disk Utility and at first it reported that repairs were needed.  I tried a Command-R restart but the computer would boot up eventually into a black screen and then I'd hear "To continue in English, press return" but then nothing would happen.  I restarted and tried to go into Safe Mode but it didn't work, read that I needed to disable FileVault for that approach.  I could still boot normally (and still can), so I disabled FileVault and have tried booting into Safe Mode.  It still doesn't work though--sometimes when I restart it just doesn't go into Safe Mode, and sometimes it goes to a black screen.  However, now when I run Disk Utility's Repair Disk, it reports no problems.
I don't know what to do from here except back up to Time Machine and restore from backup.

Thanks for your suggestion Eric.  I tried that and it gave me the recovery volume option.  But when I selected it, after a few seconds the screen went black and stayed there until a voice said "To continue in English, press return".  I'm guessing that it is in recovery mode correctly but there is a problem with the graphics card which leads to the screen shutting down.  I don't know what else I could try except taking this in to an apple bar, but holla if you have any ideas!

  • G5 "System Failure" freeze - HELP!

Three or four times in the last day or two, my G5 has been displaying a very strange 'freeze' whereby the following happens:
    1. Everything on monitor freezes - cursor, keyboard, entire screen even the clock (usually keeps on ticking) Not in any particular program or movement.
    2. Unable to Force-Quit. Must shut down manually from CPU's Power button
    3. If I don't power down, the jet engine sound from the cpu starts revving up within 10 min. (no hi temp noted, dust has been cleaned out)
    4. New today, I was able to get about an hour's work in before the freeze. THIS time, for the first time, the following message appeared upper left-hand corner if screen: (I hope that I 'got' which were zeros and which were capitol Os)

    Hi Catherine,
Hmmm the pmap is the Physical Map of all the HW, Caches, Virtual Memory, etc, so it could be CPU, RAM, Hard Drive, just about anything.
Boot off your original G5 Install Disk while holding down Option/alt key to select AHT, then run the extended Apple Hardware Test.
The Memory test can really only be trusted if it finds a problem, not if it doesn't find a problem.

  • Laptop freeze for no reason

Hello, I have a problem that has apperead the last two weeks.. I own a dv6-3150 hp notebook. I have it for 4 years. A month ago I had some freezing and then everytime my pc restarted i and t would check the c folder for errors. So I took it to service where the found a failed hard drive and replaced it. I thought that this would solve the problem now as I have a new HDD.Also they cleaned the laptop from dust and now it doesn't make any noise. However, what is going now is that when I am surfing on the internet or playing an online games randomly after 3 or 4 hours of use my pc  will freeze cursor as well and the only thing that I have to do is manually turn it off from the button. I searched a lot on the internet to find any reason for this, but the only thing I found was antivirus programs, failed hardware , drivers and overheating. As I got it back recently from the service I surely have no hardware issues , a clean laptop and I can't find something that make this freezing to happen. I even went to power management and lowered the maximum performance of my cores to 85% so now it doesn't heat at all. I also made a memory test and my card  and hdd seemed fine. Yesterday it didnt freeze at all and i was happy. But today when I turned it on it froze on the start up screen! I read somewhere that It could be useful to press f10 and access the bios but even there it asks me a password that I do not have.  I really don't know what 's the problem. As I sent it to hp service 3 weeks ago, it was checked. The only thing that come to my my is maybe false installment of windows but I don't even know if that is cause eveything works ok. Also I changed my iantivirus program. But I have a fear everytime I use my pc for a freeze that may happen any time. Can you help me?

You say "it started with iMovie", so I assume that up until two weeks ago your machine was running fine? I'd start by uninstalling Iphoto library manager as you say it doesn't work for you anyway.
Next thing I would do would be to create a new admin account, log out of your current account and in to the new one. Do the freezes continue? Report back your findings please.
