HT1115 i cannot turn on my keyboard backlight

My keyboard backlight will not turn on, whenever i try to adjust it to brighten or dim the backglight setting i get the brighten symbol with a small circle with a line through it. I am not sure what to do. I have tried ever combination of settings regarding the keyboard settings and have yet to turn them on.

Thanks, Reed.
I realize that this is a VERY old topic, but had to comment, because others might stumble upon it.
You inadvertantly solved my problem. For some time, I have had no backlight on my MacBook Pro 2012 model. I spent time reading Help files and searching through forums, bu tnobody else that I found has mentioned the brighten symbol with the small circle and a line going through it.
When I read that, it caused me to notice the F5 and F6 keys alternate function symbol, whose purpose I had never spotted in more than 6 years of owning MBP's. I'd used them during daylight, and didn't see what they did. Apple probably mention  them in their Help files somewhere, but I've never seen that.
If Apple could put a simple 'Use the F5 and F6 keys to adjust keyboard backlighting brightness manually' into the first Help file which is produced when people search for 'adjust keyboard backlight', tne it would save people like me hours of frustration.
Thanks again.

  • New owner of MBP, why can't you turn off the keyboard backlight in Win 7?

I'm a new owner of MBP. I have Windows 7 64bits installed on bootcamp. The keyboard backlight is really bothering me. I thought Boot Camp was out for awhile, and I don't know why can't Apple fix this backlight control thing? I downloaded that power assistant software and I liked it; however, I was turned off that it wasn't a freeware. What can I do to turn this backlight off permanently?

Well... seems like pre-2010 MBPs all had 'non-disablable' keyboard backlights on Windows. Installing BC 3.1 won't help at all. You could temporary minimize backlight level, but not turn it off. And on just any ambient light change it jumps back to maximum. Extremely erratic
A friend of mine got a 2010 MBP and he's able to turn backlight off. I've got mid-2009 model with BC 3.1, and I can't. My another friend has late-2008 model, he can't turn the backlight off, either.
I agree, ideally powerplan7 should have been a freeware. However, although I did spend $10 on a key, I'm oh-so-happy right now. With backlight disabled And since there are no alternatives AT ALL, I'm glad they're not selling this software for, say, $25.

  • How do i turn on the keyboard backlight? Pavilion dm4 2033cl

I am pretty positive that my laptop does have a backlight. However, I didn't need it at the time and I shut it off. But now I can't turn it on. I originally remembered adjusting it through the power options and that there was a little slider to adjust the brightness of either the screen or the keyboard.  I could have been wrong though, since I no longer see the second slider for the keyboard brightness.
I have tried everything I could find to get the light to turn on. I used the mobility center but there is no keyboard option. I have tried the fn + spaacebar, fn +f5, and my keyboard does not have a specialized key to adjust the keyboard backlight either.
Anyone know how to turn on the backlight?

Your notebook isn't delivered with a backlit keyboard. That feature is reserved for only a few select models. The screen brightness and keyboard backlighting are altogether different systems. Backlighting is controlled by a special key on the keyboard and display brightness can be controlled by two special keys on the keyboard.
The following image shows what the backlighting and display brightness keys looks like.

  • How do I turn on the keyboard backlight when running Win 7 in Bootcamp 4.0?

Power Plan 2.5e does not find a Bootcamp process, so doesn't think I'm running it, and is no help. The backlight works perfectly in Mountain Lion, but I can't getit to come on at all when running Win 7. What am I missing?

Well the problem is most certainly having 2 versions Why on earth would you
    do that ?
You'll have to remove both and reinstall version 4, although at this point
    you probably should upgrade.

  • T440p turn on keyboard backlight at startup automatically

    Hi
Is there a way to do this at Windows 7 / 8???
I know that it's not possible from the BIOS but there must be an utility there which turns on the keyboard backlight at every windows startup and keep it on regardless of what.
Also I would like it to be turned back on when the computer comes out of sleep/hibernation.
Does anyone know a software for this?
    Thanks

Maybe from lenovo software but there must be another windows utility for this.
In linux manipulating leds are possible through /sys/class/leds/tcapi
The person who I want to give this computer as a gift is completely computer analfabet and she would love to have the backlight to be turned on all the time.

  • Udev rules to turn off keyboard backlight on Asus UX32VD AFTER login

    Hi,
I would like to turn off the keyboard backlight everytime my laptop starts.
    I looked at :
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/As … _Backlight
    So I created a rule :
    /etc/udev/rules.d/kbd_backlight.rules
    SUBSYSTEM=="leds", ACTION=="add", KERNEL=="asus::kbd_backlight",DRIVERS=="asus-nb-wmi", ATTR{brightness}="0"
It works quite fine, after the boot the keyboard turns OFF.
But at GNOME login it goes ON again.
    I found this :
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ba … ht_service
    and masked
    systemctl mask systemd-backlight@leds:asus::kbd_backlight.service
    No more success...
On grep later I masked this one :
    systemctl mask sys-devices-platform-asus\x2dnb\x2dwmi-leds-asus::kbd_backlight.device
    Nothing new.
On more grep and I commented this :
    /lib64/udev/rules.d/99-systemd.rules
    # SUBSYSTEM=="leds", KERNEL=="*kbd_backlight", TAG+="systemd", IMPORT{builtin}="path_id", ENV{SYSTEMD_WANTS}+="systemd-backlight@leds:$name.service"
I tried to understand a bit more with this, but without success:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ud … f_a_device
    udevadm info -a -p /sys/class/leds/asus\:\:kbd_backlight
Udevadm info starts with the device specified by the devpath and then
walks up the chain of parent devices. It prints for every device
found, all possible attributes in the udev rules key format.
A rule to match, can be composed by the attributes of the device
and the attributes from one single parent device.

=> turns it off later, more or less when the filesystem is loaded, but when gdm (login/passwd) starts it turns on again.
    SYSTEMD SCRIPT
After some fight with systemd I could do a script (the tricky part was to start it at the good "level")
    /etc/systemd/system/kbd_backlight_off.service

    Description=Turns off the keyboard backlight

Shouldn't be so difficult to turn the keyboard backlight off, from the boot time... What am I missing ???

  • T540p Keyboard Backlight and fn-Buttons

    Good evening,
I've got a brand new T540p since 2 days. First, I installed Windows 8.1 from the Recovery Media and after the Windows and Lenovo Updates I installed all the Software I need.
Yesterday I noticed, that I have to push Alt+Fn+F4 to close a Window. Or I have to push Fn+F3 for a Searchwindow.
Can anyone tell me, if it's possible, to change the Function of the F-Buttons?
And is it possible, to turn on the Keyboard Backlight all the time and not for a few Minutes while I'm typing?
    Kind Regards
    Manuel

You can change the FN-key functions by pressing FN + Esc (activates FNLock).

  • Keyboard backlight prohibited?

Whenever I try to turn up the keyboard backlight on my MacBook Pro, it comes up with the overlay box that has a prohibited sign under it and won't turn on. I have the App Caffeine, which I turned off and it worked then a minute later it wouldn't turn on again. Any idea what the issue is?

    Hi, mrenglishman
I do not believe that this a setting that can be adjusted. The backlight automatically turns completely off when the screen goes off or when the machine goes to sleep, and there has yet to be a way to make this a possibility.
    Best,
    Adam

  • Macbook Pro (10.6.8) keyboard backlight wont turn on

I was reading some articles to try and fix it myself but I noticed a lot of people have problems with their keyboard backlight because they have the box located in
System Preferences > Keyboard > Automatic Illuminate either checked or unchecked. I checked my keyboard settings and I don't have that box at all!
I got my macbook in 2008, 2009 so it's a slightly older version. I need help fixiing my keyboard!
It hasnt worked for awhile now but I just never noticed it.
It never turns on when it's dark either.
When I cover the camera lens the display dims so it pretty much works
The only thing I noticed that no one talked about was that when I press FN + F5 or F6, I hear that sound that indicates you can't use that option. but when I try with the FN + f1 or f2, it works just fine.

  • Macbook 13 Retina keyboard backlight not turning on

    Hi all,
I've had my 13inch MPRr for about two weeks now and whenever it comes out of sleep from a LidOpen the keyboard backlight will seldom turn on.  It is pretty inconsistent but I can usually get it activated again when I put it into sleep manually from the menu bar.  Has anyone else experienced erratic behavior from the keyboard backlight?

I'm also experiencing this problem. my 2.6 macbook pro is less than 2 weeks old and the backlit keyboard stopped illuminating a few days ago. it DID work for a time, but suddenly decided to stop working. labtick and preference pane tweaks have done nothing to fix the problem.
Try resetting your SMC, PRAM and run your hardware tester.

  • Keyboard backlighting will never turn off

Heya guys and girls. Thanks ahead of time for your help. I was just about to go to sleep tonight as I had just started a large download. I proceeded to turn down my brightness all the way down....but for some reason I couldn't turn down my backlighting on my keyboard at all! I thought for some reason it could have gotten stuck in backlighting mode (makes no sense, but worth a shot) in windows, so I booted into windows and tried to turn it off, which didn't work.
Basically what happens in windows is if I press F8 a few times, the backlighting symbol appears to be greyed out with the little circle with a slash through it. If I spam the button, every once and a while it will not be greyed out and show me that my backlighting is infact full...But when i try to decrease it after it shows up, it goes back to being greyed out and the circle with the slash reappears.
In osx, F8-10 are greyed out with the circle/slash and spamming does nothing...
Let me know of any fixes/ideas you may have please!

bump. no one else is experiencing this? I fixed it with a shut down. I think when I go from windows to osx something gets messed up in between. Right now I'm in osx and i can't turn my backlit keyboard on (earlier i couldn't turn it off).

  • Keyboard backlighting - manually turning it on

Is there a way (short of putting a piece of tape over the camera) to manually turn the keyboard backlighting on? I'm regularly finding that the machine's idea of how dim the ambient light needs to be is different from mine - increasingly so as my eyes get older
    thanks...Bob

That did the trick! Too bad this kind of control is not built into the machine as it comes from Apple.
    Thanks...Bob

  • How can I turn off or dim the keyboard backlight?

I have a new HP Envy 14 Ultrabook.  It has a backlit keyboard.  I know many people like that "feature", but I don't.  I assumed it would be easy to turn off the light in the control panel (e.g., in the device's settings), but there is no option.  I can hit the F5 key to turn off the general lighting, but then that F5 key glows blindingly bright all the time.  I want to either completely disable the keyboard backlights, or equivalently set the light level to be dim to the point of being completely off.  But I can't find any setting to do that in the power options, device properties, etc.  Nor has this question been satisfactorily answered in any other forums that I could find.  Thanks in advance for your help.

I haven't tried this on a laptop but I've used it on all kinds of too-bright led's like on the electric toothbrush or the HEPA filter or modem, etc.: Take some nail polish and paint the bulb. A dark color or lighter color depending on how much light you want to block. Sometimes I paint the lights on things completely with dark nail polish and I've never had it cause a problem.
Since the bulb doesn't put out that much lumens it shouldn't hurt it and the worst case scenario would be that the bulb burns out and you replace it, or at least I think that would be the worst case scenario. On my Pavilion the f5 button turns the backlight on and off just fine though the power button is a bit too bright. I may paint it with nail polish. That said, when I do turn my backlight on using f5, it is much too bright and I really wish HP would make this adjustable. Why the heck wouldn't they?? I could paint that light but I really don't want to open up my computer, I'm superstitious that way.
