HT1143 my itunes on my mac doesnt show the apple tv in the devices list.

I was not able to rent a movie from my apple tv set up as it told me to do it through my computer itunes.I did so and it took an hour to download:( then I could not play it on my apple tv. I see and can access my photos, and music /podcasts from my computer but cannot get my apple tv to play this movie I rented from the itunes store.

If it's the 2nd or 3rd gen model it will not show up under devices, unless you connect it to iTunes (for restore purposes only)
Did you receive an error when trying to rent? What is your speed (www.speedtest.net)

I`m having exactly the same problem!! Updated Friday to the new Itunes 11, which i have to say looks cool but isn`t overly user friendly, and my Iphone 5 is not being recognised. Ran diagnostic tests and i`m getting a red dot next to iphone, ipod etc stating not connected even though it was! You need to be running Mac OS X 10.5 or newer to get iTunes 10. This OS version won't run on a G3.
Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6 are available on DVD. Mac OS X 10.6 requires an Intel Mac.

Now, today, it shows 192, which is the first octet of its IP address. The only change I've made today is to try and get Time Machine running again - or rather, to fix it so that I can see the time machine backups.
I see, incidentally, that the machine directory on Time Machine is also 192.
It may be worth my while mentioning that there is a strong hypothesis around that the NVRAM battery is dead or dying, but I haven't been in a hurry to change it as it's the last thing you take out of the case when you make any repairs. I'd be more willing if a thing like that sat a little nearer the memory chips.

Best practices says plug the USB cable into the computer, then plug the 30 pin connector into the iPhone.
If everything is working correctly, you should be able to plug the iPhone in at any time. Before or after opening iTunes.

What I have tried so far is I had my MAC search for update’s and it said that I should update to (ITunes version 10 . 6 . 3 ) So I asked it to do the update but after 2hrs of waiting for it to download/update it then puts up a message saying the following- (In order to continue installation, please close the following application: ITunes).
When I tried to do this another message comes up that says- (The update ITunes can’t be installed. The following install step failed: run preupgrade script for Apple mobile device support. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance.)
I have also tried to run the update while having closed ITunes before I even start the update but the same problem happens after waiting about 2hrs.
Some one that had the same problem said this might be happening in the older operating systems. But that does not make sense because surely Apple want customers who own a MAC and i-phone to still buy from iTunes.
