HT1175 I would like to set up my first time capsule to back up in an external HD

I hit the Time machine icon, then a windows pop up,
the window shows the button to turn it on, I click and a airtime capsule came over I click on that,
Then another windows appeared that will connect to a "Station" ? what is this ?
I left on overnight but nothing happened.
I would like to make a back to an external HD, but I can't because I need to create this airtime capsule"
I have OS Lion 10.7.5 but I would like to upgrade my OS to the latest system Maverick.
I don't want to loose anything so I would like to make a back.
Please help me out to find the solution.

If that does not work, then you can always perform a "Soft Reset" by pushing the reset button on the Time Capsule for 1 second, then release. When you do this, you now have 5 minutes of free access to go into AirPort Utility and change all the passwords without affecting the network settings.

I would like to extend my network with time capsule

I have and airport extreme. I just bought a time capsule. I would like to keep the airport connected to the modem and use the time capsule to extend my network range and backup. The reason I want to set up my network this way is so I can "hide" the time capsule in another area of the house. Just in case of theft. I would rather have my back-up not located on my desk with all of my other equipment.
When I was setting up the time capsule, it looked like it was doing exactly what I wanted it to do. Then it got to the last step, restarting. The device restarted, the green light came on, but it never showed up in the airport utility dock again. I had to reset it and start over. I ended up setting it up off network and connecting my computer with an ethernet wire and doing my back-up. Now, I have to get it set up wirelessly today. Otherwise, I just bought a very expensive hard drive and would not get the benefit of the wireless back-up.
The guy at the store said this should be easy and it appeared like it was easy, but, something just isn't right.

In order for the Time Capsule to "extend a wireless network", the AirPort Extreme must first be configured to "Allow this network to be extended".
Did you remember to enable that option on the AirPort Extreme before you tried to configure the Time Capsule to "extend"?
Check your settings on the AirPort Extreme as follows:
Open AirPort Utility, select the AirPort Extreme and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab just below the row of icons
Make sure that you have a check mark entered in the box next to "Allow this network to be extended"
Update to save settings on the AirPort Extreme
Then, configure the Time Capsule to "extend a wireless network"
Post back if you need more tips on this.

I cant set up my older wireless keyboard with my iMac. The Apple site shows this keyboard model as needing a USB keyboard and mouse for initial set up, but I dont know how to do that. Blue tooth finds the keyboard, yet when I need to type the passcode, nothing happens. the keys wont function. What am I doing wrong? Thanks

How do i set up/configure time machine and my first time capsule ?

I want to set up my time machine. When I click at the top of my toolbar it says time machine not configured.
When I turn time machine on through system preferences/time machine - it then prompts me to set up my first time capsule.
When I press 'select back up disk' it prompts me to a page where I cannot 'use disk' I can only click on cancel or 'other time capsule'.
When I click on 'other time capsule' I get taken to a screen with a globe on it and although it says 'internet connected' it also says 'no airport base stations have been found'.
How do I do up time machine/set up my first time capsule ?

I need help. My three boys have brand new iPad mini's and I would like to set them up. I would like to create one new apple ID and have it shared by all three. This way they can share content (apps, music). How do I do that?

Looking for an information management solution. I have three boys that have brand new ipad mini's. I would like to set them up to manage information the easiest way.
My first thought was to use my apple ID for their apps and purchases. This would give me the advantage of seeing everything downloaded and be able to monitor this closely. The disadvantage to me, was that they would see all of my contracts, my apps, and my music.
My other thought was to create one new apple ID and to share that among the three boys. This way I would not have to worry about my information being on their ipads.
This is a very confusing situation for me. My goal is seperate my stuff from my kids stuff. Appreicate input from anyone who has in-depth experience with this as it applies to apple ID, icloud ID, and any detailed explaination of how to do this would be appreiciated. Thanks.

I think I will do this. I will use my apple ID and set face time and message to work independently. That solves one problrem. My other problem and maybe my bigger problem is that if I am using my apple ID, how do I iflter all of this so that my kids don't see my contacts, get my apps, etc. ?

Welcome to the Apple Community.
If your receiver is connected to your TV by HDMI and has a spare HDMI input port, then yes plug the HDMI cable from the Apple TV into your receiver.
If that's not possible the HDMI lead from the Apple TV can go straight to the TV and you can connect the receiver to the Apple TV with an optical audio cable.

You can't connect an iPhone or iPad to a Mac via Bluetooth, except for Internet tethering.
You're not doing anything wrong - it just isn't a feature of iOS devices.
What were you hoping a Bluetooth connection would allow you to do?
