HT1178 AirPort Time Capsule set-up issues.

The initial set-up of my AirPort Time Capsule does not complete. The error message is "No configured AirPort base stations have been found".  I have connected the TC to the ISP modem/wireless router with an Ethernet cable.  The AirPort Utility has a green dot for Internet underneath the picture of the world.  When I check the status of the connection there is a yellow dot for "Internet Connection" and a yellow dot for "No DNS servers".  My reading found that this new TC should be set up as the primary base station if you are connected to an existing network.  I do not know how to do that.  It was also suggested that I disable the wireless radio on the ISP modem/wireless router instead of having two networks.  I have not done that yet as when I contacted the ISP techie he advised that I just set up two networks instead of turning off their wireless radio.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

My reading found that this new TC should be set up as the primary base station if you are connected to an existing network
That would not be correct. If the TC is set up as the primary base station, then it will be handing DHCP and NAT routing duties......when it should be in Bridge Mode, since you have another router "upstream" on the network that is already handling the same network services.
The result is two devices both competing against each other trying to control the routing functions on your network, causing conflicts and other issues.....which likely explains your results. You only want one device doing this on a network.....which means that the TC should be setup in Bridge Mode on your network.
It was also suggested that I disable the wireless radio on the ISP modem/wireless router instead of having two networks.
There is usually no need to do this unless you find that there are interference issues being created between the networks. It won't hurt to turn off the wireless on the modem/router, but then again it may not help either. My advice would be to leave the network on at least for the present time, but your call on that one.
I suggest that you start over and try the setup again on the TC.
If you decide to do this, with the TC powered on, hold in the reset button on the back of the TC firmly for 10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the TC to restart to a slow, blinking amber light. If you have a new TC, the reset button is located to the right of the power cord port on the back of the TC.
Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <--> ports on the modem/router to the WAN "O" port on the TC
On your Mac, open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click the Other WiFi Devices button
Click on Time Capsule
Or, if you are using an iPhone or iPad for the setup....
On the home screen, tap Settings
Tap WiFi
Under the heading of Setup a New AirPort Base Station, tap Time Capsule
AirPort Utility will take a minute to analyze the connections and then suggest a setup. The window will look like the example below, except that you will see a Time Capsule icon.
Type in a name that you want to use for your TC wireless network
Type in a device name that you want to call the TC
Type in a password for the wireless network and device
Verify the password
Click Next
The utility should configure everything for you in a minute or two. When you see the display indication of Setup Complete, click Done
That should be all that you need to do.
At this point, you should be able to locate the wireless network that you created on the TC, and enter the password to connect.

  • Time capsule set up issues

    Hello,
I have just purchased a brand new 2TB Time Capsule to use with Time Machine to backup my Macbook Pro.  I am running OS X 10.8.4 with all updates available done.  I also updated the TC.
I have been trying for two days to get my Time Capsule sorted and seem to have explored scenarios and solutions provided on the internet to no avail.
I keep getting this message after just below 6GB has been backed up:
The Time Capsule is plugged straight into my MacBook via ethernet cable as well as being plugged into my Sky wireless router (Sagem) with ethernet cable too.
Like suggested I have switched off wireless in Airport utility and on the Network tab have put the router to 'Off (bridge mode)'.
Internet and TC are both on solid green led.
I have used disk utility and followed instructions to check everything is OK there, but my understanding of partitions etc. is not great and there could be something here that is wrong:
I originally was not aware that it would be better to start off plugging in directly via ethernet so maybe this could have affected something?
I cannot find any step-by-step guide on the airport utility parts that need changing and am finding it infuriating trying to alter one thing and see if it makes a difference.
Alternatively, is there a way I can completely wipe all recognition of the failed attempts to use the TC and start again a fresh?
I have tried to erase data but it still remembers the past attempts and details of the TC.
Thanks, I look forward to your responses and if there is any more information that would make it easier to sort, please let me know.
    Thanks
    Dawn

Do a verify of the local source disk.. I think it might be faulty.
    See A5 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Reset the TC to factory.. erase the drive and start over..
Use all SMB names.. ie short 2-20 characters.. no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
See C9 for more info on why apple names are useless.
The whole C section in pondini covers most of these issues...
Expect trouble.. TM and Mountain Lion can be really unreliable.

  • Airport + Time Capsule - Back-up Issue

I am trying to back-up the data on my Time Capsule and over xmas purchased a 3TB harddrive from the Apple Store (Lacie P9233). I formatted the harddrive and plugged it into the USB port on my time capsule. When I go into the Airport utility it recognizes I have a hard drive attached but when I go to Disks > Archive it says 'No Airport disks available.' My time capsule has around 1.1 TB of data on there so I know there's plenty of room. Could it be an issue with how the hard drive is partioned? By default it's split 300GB/2.7TB and I wasn't sure if this was causing an issue. Any help is appreciated.

The win7 is the worrying part.
Did you format this disk on windows? If so you might not be able to get it working.
When you partitioned it that could also cause issues if the large partition is not first. Not sure of that one.
The disk should definitely be formatted HFS+ .. nothing else for this to work.
Another method to archive btw,, and I would only do this with a Mac..
Plug the USB drive into the computer.. plug the computer into the TC by ethernet, with wireless off and simply copy the whole partition across. It is faster over ethernet to computer and USB than a USB plugged into the TC by about two.

  • Time capsule set up issue

I have just tried to hook up a new time capsule and all goes well until it tries to restart the time capsule after set up - it then just continues to flash orange and is no longer recognised.
    Have updated airport software.....
I've had several attemps and would really appreciate some guidance please?

Trying to connect the Time Capsule using wireless only will require that you know the following three things:
    1) Name of the wireless network
    2) The exact type of wireless security the BT hub is using (It may be WPA, WPA2, WEP 128, WEP 64 of any of a number of other things. If you are not sure, you may need to contact the BT folks for this information
    3) The wireless network password
If you can get back to me with 2)......I assume that you know the name of the wireless network and password.....I'll provide you with a step by step guide to configure the Time Capsule to "join" the BT wireless network.
An alternate....and much easier.....way to connect would have the Time Capsule connecting to the BT hub using an Ethernet cable connection, which will remain permanent. Let me know if that might work for you.

  • Time Capsule set up issue with older laptop

I just got my time capsule.  Set up went smoothly with iMac, iPhones, Ipads, new PC, Wii, DirectTV.  When I tried to set up a 4 yr old Toshiba laptop, it would find the wifi, but did not work.  I tried to rename my network with less than 25 characters, no spaces, and no special characters.  Still no luck.  Please help.

You still need to find out what wireless card is used and download the latest drivers from the card manufacturer..
Some wireless simply never works.. it is reality of wireless. And vista is the worst most horrible OS MS ever released..
    I can only suggest things.
    1. Apple names are not SMB compatible.. change the name for wireless to short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. You say you
I tried to rename my network with less than 25 characters, no spaces, and no special characters.
    Does that mean you succeeded??
    2. Turn off wireless security and test.
    3. Use fixed wireless channels.. for 2.4ghz those are 11, 6, 1 .. try in that order.
    4. No luck simply go and buy a USB wireless stick and use that.
Or buy a simple network bridge device.. the obvious one is airport express and use the laptop with ethernet plugged in.. avoiding wireless altogether is the best solution .. since ethernet drivers are much more reliable and stable.
    5. Or use a simple standard wireless router plugged into the TC for use by the Toshiba. You run it in bridge or WAP mode if it has one or wan bypass which I can explain. A $35 wireless router can perform this function and work better than the TC ever will.

  • Airport Time Capsule/Air Express Networking Issue

All of a sudden none of my wireless devices will connect to my network (2 iPhone 5's, 1 iPhone4S and an iPad2). I have a Motorola Surfboard cable modem  attached to a Linksys router. Hardwired to the Linksys router is an Apple Airport Time Capsule in bridge mode centrally located in the home to create a wireless network and a Mac mini in the kitchen. Hardwired to the Airport Time Capsule is another Mac mini in the family room and a Windows PC in the walkout. To extend the wireless network I have two Airport Express units at opposite ends of the home. When I use the Airport Utility both of the express units and the Airport Time Capsule will report which wireless clients are currently attached to them, and the clients show wifi as being available with full bars. However, when I try to use any app requiring network all we get is the spinning wheel. If I turn off wifi on the clients LTE & 3G works fine. I have shut down and sequentially started the network up beginning with the modem several times, leaving the system off for longer intervals each time. The DNS servers and domain name are correct and I have even initiated a DHCP lease renewal and restarted the clients with no help. I am guessing my Airport Time Capsule has failed but in no way that is obvious to me. Has anyone had a wireless failure like this? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

This is a follow up from my own post. I factory reset the Airport Time Capsule and the two Airport Express units and re-setup the wireless network leaving the Airport Time Capsule set to 802.11 N (802.11 b/g compatible) and the two Airport Express units extending the first; the network acted the same. I then changed the Airport Time Capsule to 802.11 N (only 5 GHz) and everything works as it used to. I can change it back to "b/g compatible" and it fails, and back to "only 5 GHz" and it works. It would seem the 2.4 GHz radio has failed in a rather odd way. The good thing is my wireless network is working without me having to layout some cash for new hardware. We will see how long the 5 GHz radio lasts, it is a gen 1 Time Capsule. For now all is well.

  • Airport time capsule, add Airport extreme for stronger signal

I have a new Airport Time Capsule set up and running.  My old Airport Extreme (5th gen) is sitting unused.  I'd like to hook it up because I can't get a USB drive to work off of the TC (according to posts here it requires a powered hub).
I've read posts about setting up more than one Extreme, but feeling overwhelmed by all the terms.  Also, much of the advice, including articles here, pre-dates the TC.  From what I've read, the version of Airport Utility makes a difference too.  I have the latest, 6.3.1.
First question:  Can somebody explain, or point me to current articles, the differences between hardwiring (ethernet) the old AE to 1) the TC or 2) my wired Internet router (Verizon).  A third option is, I think, is to set up the old AE stand-alone, connecting via wifi only, in a different part of the house.
Here's what I'm trying to accomplish.  I live in a big old house with internal brick walls.  I want to strengthen the signal throughout the house.  One network, one password, security not a huge problem because we're rural.
I'm all Apple (Windows is banned from my house), and all software and OS up to date (10.8.4; I forget what cat it is).
Second question:  depending on the answer to the first, am I looking to do an extended network, bridge network, hidden network (what is that?), roaming?  I see these terms but am unclear on the distinctions.  I'm sure many lurkers will have the same question.
    Thanks,
    Steve

    Hi Again.. !!
There are two basic methods of connection.. wired by ethernet.. much the superior method to be used in every case possible.. (less gremlins!!). Even homeplug (EOP we call them here).. adapters are a better alternative to..
Extend wireless. This is apple terminology for what everyone else calls wireless repeater.
Wireless repeater as the name suggests.. picks up the wireless signal from a wireless source and retransmits it.. in the process it slows all transfers by half.. or more.. so it is inefficient.. only use where wire cannot be run.
    Now to your specific question.
If the verizon router is the main router of the network.. with the TC plugged in and working in bridge mode.. then you can plug the old AE into TC or verizon router.. it will make no difference. The TC is working as a switch and AP only.. so plug into one or the other both are handled by the verizon router which does not know or care where the devices are plugged in. There is one consideration.. the TC and AE are gigabit.. the verizon is likely to be 100mbit.. so if you can plugging into the TC will provide gigabit link. Only relevant to ethernet connected computer on the AE and TC talking to each other.
AE stand alone is useless to you.. in stand alone you connect to it but have no connection to the rest of your network or the internet.
Second question:  depending on the answer to the first, am I looking to do an extended network, bridge network, hidden network (what is that?), roaming?  I see these terms but am unclear on the distinctions.  I'm sure many lurkers will have the same question.
If you connect by ethernet you set up roaming.
    See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4260
If by extend wireless you simply set the extend.. it is by its very nature nothing but a repeater so must use the same wireless name and password etc.

  • HT1178 Setting Up new AirPort Time Capsule

im setting up airport time capsule for the first time and its asking me to "Provide the PPPoE connection information from your ISP" Im not sure what to do? Where do i get this information?

PPPoE connection information consists of your user name....likely your email address....and password for your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
If you do not know this, then you will need to contact your ISP for the required information.

  • Setting up Airport Time Capsule

We will soon set up a Time Capsule and new iMac.  Is there a preference to whether the iMac should be hardwired through the LAN Input, or connected wirelessly?
    Thanks.

    Bob:
I've been researching my problem for hours and have spent way to long on the phone with ATT and Apple.  I was wondering if you could help me with my setup (give me exact instructions) of my new AP 3tb time capsule and my existing att uverse 3801hgv 2 wire modem.  I want to disable wifi and make everything run through the time capsule so I can take advantage of all the features.  I know some of these setting will have to be made from
http://192.168.1.254 website.   To make things easier,  I reset the 2 wire device to factory settings and did the same with the time capsule.  I'd like to get the settings all set up on the 2wire end and then plug in the airport time capsule and set up network and everything from scratch there.  I'm assuming if 2wire stuff gets set correctly everything will fall into place easier when I plug in the time capsule for first time.  I'm not very familiar with Wifi/networking terms but would greatly appreciate if you could help me solve this issue once and for all.  I am running OSx 10.9 and airport utility 6.3.2.  Because we will be disabling the wifi and I will need internet connection, I have run an ethernet cable from the 2wire box directly into my laptop, which I will later use as the ethernet cable into the time capsule.  Thank you so much!!!!!

I have an Ipad, I activated the time capsule with no issues. I added the airport Utility application without issue.  However, I do not know how to access the hard drive with either my Windows computer or the Ipad.  Does someone know how?

On windows load the airport utility .. latest correct version as possible.. there is no windows 8 but win7 works after a fashion.
Make sure the TC is using SMB compatible names.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Type the name directly into windows explorer.
    \\TCname or \\TCIPaddress
If no luck turn off all the firewalls.. internal windows plus security software plus whatever other gargyoles and other rubbish AV software you have running.
Ensure windows is able to at least ping the TC by IP address and name..
Use the utility in windows to set file sharing to guest account on with full read and write access.. and set workgroup to WORKGROUP.

  • 2TB Airport Time Capsule Connectivity and Range Issues

Got the brand new Airport + Time Capsule (2TB) to replace a weak (ane expensive) Linksys EA6500 AC router which had a hard time staying connected.
Originally replaced the Linksys with an old Belkin unit and everything worked fine.  Then I bought the new Airport + Time Capsule.  Since using my Airport, the connectivity & range are really unreliable.  Either the signal disappears or router cannot even be found.  Streaming is constantly interrupted regardless of device (AppleTV, iPhone, etc...).  Because the Airport is my backup, I don't want to disconnect so I have resorted to plugging an older Linksys into one of the ethernet ports on the Airport.  That network works just fine.
The latest firmware is installed... I am stumped.  Big Apple supporter but this disappoints that I have any issues - especially with a new item of this price range.
In fact, as I am typing this, I opened the Airport Utility - which showed it working just fine 10 min ago - and got the following...
Suggestions are welcome... Bring it back?  Change setting?  Help !!
    Thank you.

Poor wireless reliablity is being reported both here and in the airport section for the new extreme.
Just take a quick gander.. even the first page of threads here will have a few about the issue. So be warm and comforted.. you are merely a beta tester.. along with all the rest. eg
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5140686?tstart=0
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5259040?tstart=0
I would do the normal stuff to help wireless act in a stable manner.
    1. Reset to factory.
    2. Set all names to short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. Give a different name to 5ghz so you can choose it.
    3. Set fixed wireless channels and test in order for 2.4ghz, 11, 6, 1
And use 40 and 150 for 5ghz.. (a few channels either side is fine.. )
    4. Clear out all the old wireless names on the devices.. and setup just the new TC.
No luck then return the TC and either get refund.. or take another.. but until Apple fixes the firmware it is not likely to be fixed.
I would buy the Asus RT-N66U or AC66U.. for a more mature product.. and us external drive for TM.

  • How to set up AirPort + Time Capsule On the Same Network but make it so only i use it?

Ok so i am planning on getting the AirPort + Time Capsule in a few weeks, and i have seen many peole talk about how there is a right way and wrong way to set it up because apperently the bad way makes it run slow? Well i have two questions, one is how do i set it up the right way to use it to the full potential to use the new beamforming feature? And my second question which is kind of a problem is that I have internet already but my other brothers use it and i told them about pitching in buy it and they dont want to because they think its pointlesss, so what i want to know is if I can connect it to my existing wi-fi but at the same time like create a diffrent network so that only i can use it? (ex. have my wifi, 2WIRE123 for example, and then some how connect the ethernet cable to the airport + time caplsule and create a new network like 2WIRE124 so they would both basiaclly be using the same internet connection but separated to 2 diffrent networks?) Thank You.

so what i want to know is if I can connect it to my existing wi-fi but at the same time like create a diffrent network so that only i can use it?
    Sorry, but no.
If you can connect the AirPort to the 2Wire router using a permanent wired Ethernet connection, then you can configure the AirPort to create a new wireless network with its own wireless network name and password.

  • Can I create separate folders to save media on my Airport Time Capsule? Issue is I have a 256GB HDD Mac Pro Retina which is almost full. TC will only take backup of my HDD. So where would I save my photos and videos from my iPhone and iPad?

It is a hard one.. laptops with small drives are a pain.
What you need is a home media server.
Some people use a PC running itunes for cost.. but that is nothing like as good as using a Mac mini.. they make great little HTPC device.. you can plug in large hard disks and store all your files and media. And share it with the network.. Read up apple's instructions on home sharing.
    https://www.apple.com/au/support/homesharing/
For cost you can buy a mini from 2011 or 2012.. I would not recommend earlier ones.. the advantage of 2012 is they have USB3 ports. But you will pay more for them.. new mini is not as useful.. they have soldered in memory and you cannot upgrade.. the old mini was the most easily modified mac in the whole range. Uses little power and can be bought for a $300US for a good one second hand.. maybe less.

  • My airport time capsule did not set up successfully, and then status light flash amber

    Hi, Guys
I am the first time user of the time capsule, please help how to proceed?
I have set up the first time and my airport time capsule does not set successfully, then I try to reset to factory setting. After this, although I use the ethenet cable to connect the router to the airport, the status light flash amber, always, even after the reset.
Also, I can see that airport time capsule base station from the wireless network when airport is plugged in. However, when I want to access to it.

Thanks for your guidance, but the product is really anoying. First, I am sure that the airpor utilities is 6.3.
and I also follow your instruction that to set the IPv6 as local link mode. But still get the same error as mentioned in my first post.
Therefore, I have tried to use the bridge mode but could not find it, and therefore still can not set it up successfully, even though I reset the factory again(press the reset button 5 secconds at least).

  • HT1178 I have failed to Map the Airport Time Capsule to my windows 7 HP laptop as a mapped drive, error message is "access denied"

I have failed to Map the Airport time capsule to my windows 7 HP laptop, i followed all the installation steps and i get the error message "Access denied, you do not have permission to access this device, contact network administrator"

Did you install the airport utility for windows?
Is the windows computer set to home as network location.. it will not work if it is set to work or public.
Is the TC setup with all SMB type names, short no spaces and pure alphanumeric. No apostrophe.
Can you ping the TC from your computer? Open a command window and type ping and the tc name or its IP.
No response you will never be able to get connection .. it is usually firewall problem. Turn off firewall and internet security.
If it pings then simply type the IP directly into explorer.. \\TCIPaddress. (eg \\10.0.1.1 if the TC is at default)
That is usually the most foolproof method.
