HT1178 Can you backup to same time Capsule with PC and Mac

How do I backup to same Time Capsule with both PC and Mac

- backup iMac to TC and hook up HD to USB port on TC to backup PC laptop
Hmmm not better IMHO.. as long as you disk image the TC.. and the amount of space you have far exceeds total usage on both computers.. For the TM backup on the Mac you want TC area to be at least 3x the used space on the drive.. leaving out VM or bootcamp partitions if you use them.
Plus enough space to back up the PC laptop a couple of times over.
USB hard drive is fairly slow.. but should be ok for backup over wireless.. just be aware you cannot unplug the USB drive and use it direct unless you format it FAT32 which is very poor format. So first backup is going to be slow.
- backup iMac directly to HD thru firewire and backup PC to HD hooked up to Airport Extreme
If you don't already have a TC then this is fine. Firewire local disk is much faster than network backup even over gigabit.
Any of your options would work ok.. doing disk image on the TC is most difficult to get working and limits the hard disk space. Balance out what you already own network wise with what you need.. there are plenty of routers now with USB ports that will deal directly with windows using NTFS.. if you end up using firewire local disk to the imac..

Yes, probably can.. but it won't be fast. You are better storing programs locally and data remotely.

can you download the same film twice with the same itunes account

It depends upon which region you are in and the current policy of the copyright holder. Sometimes individual items are exemept even though repeat downloads are generally supported. Any purchased item could be removed from the store in future so you should really maintain your own backup.

  • Can I use the same Time Capsule to backup two MacBook Pros?

Basically, I want to know if I can backup my late 2009 MacBook Pro and my new one with retina display using the same time capsule? Maybe should I create different partitions on the time capsule?

Yes, provided your backup drive is big enough. For a Time Machine backup your backup drive should be at least twice the capacity of the drive it backs up. In the case of two drives sum the capacities of the two drives. Be sure you backup drive is at least twice that capacity.
You cannot partition a Time Capsule drive.

  • How can I backup up my time capsule itself

OK, this is odd but somebody has to want to do the same thing.
I have an IMac with a 500gb internal hard drive. I also have a time capsule with a 500gb hard drive. I use the time capsule as my wireless hub. I use time machine to backup my internal hard drive to the time capsule.
With all the music, photos and videos I am getting close to filling up my internal hard drive.  This also means I am running out of room on my time capsule hard drive.
I purchased a new 2tb external hard drive. I switched my time machine to put the backup on my new external hard drive.
Right now I am just using the time capsule for wireless and basically have all 500 gb available on the hard drive for it.
I was about to copy some music and photos over to the new external hard drive until I realized that is where the backup now is. If the new external hard drive fails, I'll lose the originals and the backups.
I'd really like to move the music and photos to the 500 gb of the time capsule. Basically I'd have 1 TB for hard drive space (500 gb internal and 500 gb on time capsule).
Then use time machine to backup my internal hard drive and time capsule to the new external hard drive.
However, I can't get time machine to backup the hard drive on time capsule.
    Any ideas?

Time Machine, like most backup apps, cannot back up from a network location.
The Chronosync app might be a good alternative.

  • Can you use the apple time capsule as just a wireless hard drive without using it as a router

Can i use the apple time capsule as just a wireless hard drive without using  a router

You can, but this type of configuration is not recommended or supported by Apple.
Two cautions if you want to try this:
    1)  The Time Capsule has to be configured to "Join" your existing wireless network in this type of setup...and to do that, you must know the exact type of wireless security that your network is using.
    2)  Backups are going to take twice as long. The wireless signal must travel from your computer to the wireless router and then from the wireless router back to the Time Capsule.  Two "hops"......even if the computer is located close to the Time Capsule.
If you want to try this, we can tell you how....but with no guarantees on your results....since this is not officially supported.

  • Can I backup to a time capsule via an airport extreme.

I have a time capsule although it is at the other side of my house and i dont get great signal. I am looking at getting an airport extreme (would an airport expres to extend my signal. Will i be able to backup to my time capsule via my airport extreme.

If your Time Capsule was purchased in the last few years, chances are you have a simultaneous dual band Time Capsule.
In order to extend both bands using wireless only, you would need a new AirPort Extreme, since the AirPort Express would only be able to extend one band from the Time Capsule.
If you only need to have one band extended, then an AirPort Express would likely work for your application.
Whether you choose the Extreme or Express, keep in mind that the correct location for an extending device is a point that is approximately half the distance from the Time Capsule and the general area that needs more wireless coverage.
Apple's instructions to configure the "Extend" setup are here. Although an AirPort Extreme is pictured in the example, the instructions for an AirPort Express would be the same.

  • Can I link up one time capsule with two airport express, Can I link up one time capsule with two airport express

Hi, I would like to know whether I can link up one time capsule with two airport express. The result why is that I would like to put one time capsule at first floor, two airport express at 2nd floor and 3rd floor. All these three share one network. Please advise. Thanks.

There are several ways to conenct them. We need to know what it is you want to accomplish first. Do you want better Wi-Fi coverage on the second and third floors or do you want to stream music to the xpresses?

  • Using Time Capsule with Both a Mac and Windows PC

All ... is it possible to backup both Mac and Windows computers to the same Time Capsule?  My current networked devices include:
    1 Windows 7 desktop (wireless/ethernet capable)
1 MacBook Air (wirelessly connected to home network)
1 New iPad (wirelessly connected to home network)
2 iPhone 4S (wirelessly connected to home network)
1 Airport Extreme (currently hardwired to my Windows 7 desktop)
Thoughts/comments on leveraging the Time Capsule as purely a backup storage solution for all the devices listed above?  Is it possible?  Please advise.  Thanks!

I use a backup software to save backups to the TC from windows... it is no big issue.. but the TC should never get any where near close to full.. TM takes a lot of space to work efficiently.. so make sure there is still more than enough space.. since TM will do hourly incremental backups it can grow rather quickly if you do lots of big file edits on the Mac.
Hanging a USB hard disk off a windows desktop is a better solution in lots of way.. it can be formatted native windows NTFS.. and is faster than TC without adding to network bandwidth.
But the TC is great for wireless with windows laptop same as Apple side.

  • How to access time capsule with an old mac

I recently upgraded from an old 12" PowerBook G4 to one of the new MacBook Pros. I also purchased a Time Capsule, am using it as my wireless router, and have been making regular backups with Time Machine. Unfortunately, I had to send away my new MacBook because of an equipment failure even though I just got it three weeks ago (that's another story). So I'm back on my old PowerBook for the time being. I'd like to manually grab some files from the Time Capsule so I can pick up my work where I left off but I don't know how to access the Time Capsule with this PowerBook. It doesn't appear in my finder like it does on the MacBook. Can someone help me out? Thanks a lot!
    Brendan

pretty sure you need at least 10.4 to use your TC as a HD
    http://www.apple.com/timecapsule/specs.html
if you have 10.4, you would install this to gain access to yout TC:

  • Time Capsule with Rescue and Recovery v4

I am unable to backup my Thinkpad X300 on to Time Capsule using Rescue and Recovery v4. Other Windows XP applications can see the Time Capsule just fine.
I have added the Time Capsule to the Windows workgroup also, and use Rescue and Recovery on the XP machine to select the Time Capsule as the backup location. The Rescue and Recovery always fails at the beginning saying "The backup was cancelled".
    Please help!!

ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery v4.2 is available to enterprises at this moment only, you can buy it from IBM parts for $75 + state tax + shipping though.

  • How to setup apple time capsule with FIOSinternet and VZ router?)

    Hello,
I have Apple time capsule and the VZ Router MI424WR. I current set up:
    1. VZ router - wireless off, the rest is standard
    2. Time capsule: Wireless on in Bridge mode
Result: Internet works but the wireless network is very in-stable. Airtunes is nearly not usable.
I searched in the Internet and there was several comments that is is not a good combination. Therefore it is recommended to convert the VZ router in a modem mode and use only the Time capsule as the router. I tried this several times I do not get it to work. I followed this procedure (http://data.agaric.com/node/2160) but then I need the PPPoE Account number and password. But there do I get this? The Verizon support was not really helpful.
Please, is there a good and complete description to solve that issue?
    Thanks in advance
    Moebius

Go back to your first setup ...
Verizon router with wireless turned off
Apple Time Casule with wireless turned on
    Method 1:
With the Time Capsule in "Bridge Mode", if I remember correctly, you should connect the WAN port to one of the open ports on the Verizon router (I believe bridge mode also turns off the DHCP server on the Time Capsule, if not, find that and turn if off as well).   Change the addressing mode for the Time Capsule to "static" and assign it an address on the LAN which is not in use (choose something you know is out of the way but on the LAN -- I suggest 192.168.1.180 to start -- you can change it once you get everything working).
If it doesn't work this way for you, move the cable from the WAN port on the Time Capsule to Port 1 and try again.
    Method 2:
This results in a router behind a router setup, but unless you have devices connected directly to the Verizon router, it shouldn't be a problem.
With the Time Capsule disconnected from the Verizon router, turn on "Connection Sharing" (not bridge mode) and make sure DHCP is enabled on the Time Capsule.  You need to change the address range being used by the Time Capsule (which I think defaults to 192.168.1.x to another network -- I suggest, 192.168.2.x with a netmask of 255.255.255.0 and give the router an address of 192.168.2.1 on the LAN side.  Now, connection the WAN port to one of the Verizon router LAN ports.  If you had anything connected to the Verizon LAN ports, move those over to the LAN ports on the Time Capsule and reboot them.
    Method 3:
This is the least desirable of the scenarios because it relies on Verizon's crappy radio in their router (the Time Capsule has a much better radio and support 802.11n as well as b and g) whereas Verizon's only support b/g.    Go back to the configuration for Method 1, but also turn OFF wireless on the Time Capsule and turn on wireless on the Verizon router.   Try both bridge scenarios described -- using the WAN port first and if that didn't work, then moving the connection to port 1.
There is no scenario where you can place the Verizon router behind the Time Capsule -- since I believe Verizon is using all MoCA connections for the WAN side of their connection (you'd have to get Verizon to convert you to ethernet WAN and then they would not support you most likely for any STB issues with your FiOS if the Time Capsule was between the ONT and their router ... so don't even bother wasting time there ... more headaches than it would be worth.
If you're still not sure exactly what each configuration screen on the time capsule should say, post some screen snaps (or the configuration settings/choices which you are unsure about and someone will likely know the answer here).

  • Time Capsule with MacBook and PC

How can I use my Time Capsule with my Macbook Time Machine for auto backups and use it with my PCs as an external hard drive? I have I originally had it set up with my PCs originally. I have now erased the hard drive and hooked it up with my Mac (and am using Time Machine to back up my computer), but which partition setting do I use so I can use the other partition for windows operating system?

    @ pondini:
given your last idea (namely to "connect a self-powered USB drive to the TC") would be the most appropriate:
Time machine on the mac would back-up to the TC, the Windows-based computer would back-up to the USB-drive. That self-powered USB-drive, in turn, is connected to the TC.
    My questions:
That USB HD needs to be formatted in MS-DOS (FAT)?
Can the Mac still use space on the USB-drive for other data?
Is this just a matter of partitions?
Would all partitions on that USB-drive need to be MS-DOS (FAT)?
    Thanx for answers!

  • Printer error using Time Capsule with Vista64 and HP printe.  Any one else?

I'm running Time Capsule with my MacBook and Vista 64 PC, and trying to print on a HP5510 All-in-one.
The Time Capsule is set up according to the manual and I can print wirelessly from the MacBook. Also, the MacBook and the PC can both access the TC HD.
The problem comes when I'm trying to print with the PC. It will print about 3/4 of the page and stop, showing an error. At that point, I cannot purge/cancel/restart the print job. I need to shut down the PC and printer to get rid of the error.
    Anyone else have this problem?
    Thanks

  • Can't backup to my Time Capsule -- always hangs

So, tonight I bought a Time Capsule to back up my MacBook Air to. I've been using AirPort Base Stations for years, so I'm pretty familiar with troubleshooting them at this point.
Long story short, I've not been able to get a single successful backup to this brand new Time Capsule.
I've eliminated every possible variable -- even turned off wireless completely, and have connected the Air directly to the Time Capsule using the Air's USB ethernet adapter.
The results are always the same: 100-200 MB into the backup, it just hangs, and takes the Finder down with it.
For example, right now the backup progress dialog is sitting at "275.6 MB of 40.48" and has been for probably half an hour. I can't cancel the backup (the cancel button does nothing when clicked). I switched to the Finder to see if the Time Capsule volume was still mounted, and the Finder instantly beachballed. It's hung so badly that I just tried to restart the Air and it's now hung at the spinning restart indicator.
This is my fifth or sixth attempt of the night. I've done a "Reset to Factory Settings" once on the Time Capsule, and have been erasing the Capsule's hard drive before each attempt, via AirPort Utility.
Remember, there's no WiFi involved here. The Air is plugged directly into a LAN port on the Time Capsule. I've turned off AirPort completely on the laptop. Interference is not an issue.
The Air is running 10.5.2 and the Time Capsule is a 1 TB model running firmware 7.3.1.
It seems to be completely broken. Before I deal with the headache of returning/exchanging it, does anyone have any suggestions?

So I thought maybe the "connection interrupted" error could indicate a bad ethernet cable. So, I swapped it out for another, but it hasn't fixed the problem.
It did get much farther into the backup on this attempt -- about 2 GB out of 40 GB. It was past midnight, so I went to bed and left it running. Woke up to "an error occurred writing to the backup disk" or something to that effect. Time Capsule GONE from Airport Utility until I rebooted the TC.
(Still not using the WiFi here. Airport Utility wasn't finding the ETHERNET-CONNECTED Time Capsule.)
At this point, after so many attempts, I'm guessing it has to be a hardware failure in the TC, or the hard drive itself.
I guess I'll take it back to the Apple Store and see if I can get it swapped. If the replacement does it too, then we've got a real problem on our hands.
