HT1178 How can I access the Time Capsule HD from my PC?

Hi,
I bought the Time Capsule because I thought it was a easy way of creating a small home network with a shared HD and printer. The wireless setup was easy but everything else doesn't seem that straight forward. I soon found out that I could not just plug my USB printer. You actually need a WPS printer which was not clear in the product description. Anyhow, just need a new printer.
The main issue for me is being able to share files between my devices (Apple and non-Apple) as well as share the HD. I cannot find a way of configuring my PC or TC so that I can access the TC HD from my PC. Has anyone been able to configure that?
Thanks

You can plug a printer in via USB.. but not all printers work.. nor does airprint . but that has nothing to do with the Apple router.. that is how apple designed iOS.
What printer do you have?
Getting USB printer working can be tricky because by its nature you are networking a printer designed for local connection.. not networking.
To share printers and file sharing load the airport utility for windows into the windows computer.. that includes bonjour for windows which is helpful for sharing of apple network devices.. and there is a disk agent.
That might get you in without anything else.
No luck remember windows does not work well with the names apple uses by default.. make sure all names on the TC conform with windows networking.. ie short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
In windows explorer address bar type
\\TCname or \\TCIPaddress (where clearly you replace the TCname with actual name or the TCIPaddress with the actual IP address).
If that still fails... then you have firewall issues.. turn off all firewalls in the PC .. there can be several running.
And make sure the PC is set to home as location . .not office or public.

  • How can I access the time capsule hard drive via ethernet?

I recently bought a new laptop, as my old one was sadly stolen. I'm trying to connect to my backed up time capsule hard drive via ethernet to retrieve my files, but it doesn't seem to work. Oddly enough I have no issues over wifi. When I switch from wifi to ethernet, it gives me an error message stating that the disk was not found in the network. I have a MacBook Air with an ethernet adapter if that makes any difference. I'm also running the latest OS X and firmware. Wifi is simply too slow for this restoration process, so any suggestions?
Could I possibly connect via USB? What kind of cable would that require? Is the ethernet issue a problem with my settings?
    Help greatly appreciated

In the Network panel of System Preferences do you have an Ethernet connection item on the left? If not, authenticate if necessary by clicking on the lock, then click the plus sign at the bottom of that column and add an Ethernet item.
When I switch from wifi to ethernet, it gives me an error message stating that the disk was not found in the network.
How are you doing that switching? When you switch to Ethernet do you have connectivity to the Internet? If not, do you see a tiny green light on the Time Capsule next to the Ethernet socket you're using?
Could I possibly connect via USB?
    No.

  • Access the Time Capsule HDD from g and an n network?

    Hi there
I reckon that this Time Capsule is great idea and I look forward to buying one.
I have a MacBook Pro (802.11n) and a Windows laptop (with a 802.11g adapter). I will plug a USB printer into the Time Capsule.
I want both my laptops to be able to access the Time Capsule HDD. I understand that if I want to maximise the connection speed for my MacBook I'll need to run seperate 802.11n network (for my MacBook) and a 802.11g network for my Windows laptop. Otherwise a shared b/g/n network will just run at g speed.
My question: If I do run the two seperate networks, will both laptops be able to share the HDD and printer?
Also, will the two laptops be able to see each other across the two networks?
    Thanks for your help.
    Cheers

You're right about the 802.11n PC Card for the Windows laptop.
Seeing as the 802.11n is still in draft, how will I know if the PC Card I purchase will work with the Time Capsule?
If is merely a case of getting any Belkin, NetGear etc. 802.11n PC Card for the laptop and assuming it'll work?
Is there a compatibility list somewhere?
I really appreciate your help on this one.
    Cheers!

  • How can I add the Time Capsule to my Netgear Nighthawk R7000's Network?

I Want to connect my Time Capsule To My Nighthawk and still have access to the rest of my networt. How do I do it?

Thanks for confirming that for me.
If the Time Capsule has not ever been set up, then it is still in its factory default settings and you can proceed with the setup.
Connect the Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <--> ports on your Netgear router to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule
Power up the Time Capsule for a minute or two. The light will be slowly blinking amber at this time.
Click the WiFi icon on the menu bar at the top of the Mac's screen
Look for a setting of New AirPort Base Station
Click on Time Capsule just below that
The example below shows an AirPort Extreme. You will see Time Capsule on your screen.
The setup utility will open up and take 15-20 seconds to analyze the network, then a screen similar to this will appear, except you will see a Time Capsule icon:
Network Name........Type in the name of the network that you want to use.  If you want the Time Capsule to "extend" the Netgear network, type in same wireless network name that the Netgear router is using.
Base Station Name......Type is a simple name for the Time Capsule.  Mine is TC, for example.
Password........Type in the password that you want to use for the network.  If you use the same wireless network name as the Netgear, then you would type in the wireless password for the Netgear network here
Verify the password that you entered
Click Next......and the utility will set up everything for you.  When you see the message of setup complete, click Done.
    That's it.

  • How can I search the time capsule using spotlight or time machine?

Every time I try to use spotlight in finder, to find anything on the time capsule, spotlight automatically turns to the mac.
While using timemachine the connection to the time machine greys out.
How can I use these options, or different options to search the time capsule?

I've been looking for the star wars gui, but I only ended up watching scifi movies all night.
    LOL..
Oh well it is new year.. seems as good a use of time as any.
Click on the time machine icon in the dock.. that opens finder inside the backup.

  • How can I make the Time Capsule Icon stay on my desktop?

I just replaced my old Airport Extreme and aging external drive with a new Airport TC.  The upgrade coulen't have been easier. Here's my question.  I occasionally want to access the TC as in external drive so I would like the TC icon to appear on my desktop all the time rather than appearing only when the Time machine is running.  Is there a way to do this?  I'm running all the latest software / firmware. Thanks and I know there have been some similar threads but they were pretty old.

Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
    Open Users & Groups
Click the Login Items tab (next to the Password tab)
Click the + buttton at the bottom of the list
Use the Finder interface to locatet the Time Capsule drive and open it on the desktop
    Click Add
Now the Time Capsule drive....named "Data", unless you have renamed it, will mounta and appear on the desktop when your Mac starts up.

  • How can i get the time capsule to use my mac's mac address

on some wireless routers you can get the router to use the mac address of a client connected to it instead of it's own.
Can i do that on the time capsule?

Sorry, but no. You cannot change (spoof) the MAC address on any of the AirPort/Time Capsule routers.

  • HT1178 i can't connect the time capsule with my mac using the aiport utility. i want to use the time capsule to make backup for my mac book pro. the time capsule is giving a flashed amber light. please advice me

the time capsule is giving flashed amber light and i cant connect it to my mac book pro. i want to use it with the time machine to make backup for my mac. please advice me.

To do the setup, plug it in via ethernet.. do not try to setup over wireless.. Once it is setup you can plug the TC into the network and use wireless.
Most likely you will use the TC in bridge to an existing modem router.. but we cannot help as you have no details of the network setup.
I do recommend in the setup of the TC you use SMB type names.. that means, short, no spaces pure alphanumeric.. as later Mac OS do have issues with long names, spaces and that apple shocker, the apostrophe.

  • Can you access the Time Capsule just like a normal HD?

I'm wondering if the Time Capsule can only be used for backup or can you partition it and use it like regular external hard drive?

I don't use TM on my TC. I use TC as my net server. I use the Finder to drag and drop files to the TC. I also use TC to share files long distance with my children who are away.
I since removed the 500 gig hd and placed a 250 gig in the TC.
I've swapped a one terabyte hard drive into the TC also which was very quick and simple.
You are not going to partition a TC hard drive unless you pull it and partition the hard drive say in a firewire or usb enclosure or internal in a MacPro.

  • How can I use the Time Capsule in only 802.11b/g?

I think I am getting interferences on my 5GHz phone from the time capsule, which I have running in 802.11n mode with b/g compatitibility. I assume if the Time Capsule was running in 802.11b/g mode I would not get the intereferences?
The Airport utility does not seem to have a setting to use the Time Capsule in 802.11b/g only. Is there a way to accomplish this?

Then the Time Capsule's 5 GHz network should not interfere with the phone since it operates a long way from the phone's frequency.
Not necessarily. In the US 802.11n channels appear to go up to at least 5.805 GHz, if I interpret this chart
    http://www.networkdictionary.com/Wireless/Wi-Fi-Wireless-LAN-Frequency.php
    correctly.
It would seem that the best way to avoid interference with 5.8 GHz cordless phones is to avoid channels above 153.

  • How do i access my Time capsule HD from my PC

    hi
I have just set up a new Time Capsule, how do i acess the HD on the time capsule from my PC?
    Thanks,
    Joel

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
As the Time Capsule's drive is a network drive, you can access to the Time Capsule's hard drive without any problem.
In a PC, open a Windows Explorer window and select Network in the sidebar, so you should see your Time Capsule. Just double-click it and you will access to its drive. Also, you should be able to access to it from My Computer

  • How can I use the Time Machine Backups from my Old Computer?

I have two months of Time Machine backups made using my old Macintosh computer which died and I no longer have. I have now purchased a new computer and am trying to use the Time Machine back ups from the original computer, but it will not recognise them. How can I get my new MacBook Pro to use the Time Machine Backups from my old Computer? I phoned the Apple help line and they said I cannot use them and would have to delete them. This sounds crazy if you can only use the Time Machine back up file with one computer and have to delete it when you buy a new Mac. Surely there must be some way to transfer ownership (not files) from an old to the new Mac?
    Thanks
    Richard

Thanks Kevin for the suggestion posted on MacOSXHints how to "Repair Time Machine after logic board changes".
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080128003716101
It seems as though I am not alone with my frustration with the way Time Machine uses the MAC address of a computer to tell one system from another. This means that if you have your Mac repaired with a new logic board, or replace your system with a new one, you can't resume backups where you left off. Reading through the readers who used the fix using Terminal, it appears that the fix does not always work. I contacted Apple again, but they were no help. Surely Apple should come out with a solution as more and more people use Time Machine/Time Capsule.
It is CRAZY that after a change computers or a switch in the computer logic board that you cannot resume your Time Machine back ups.

  • How can I access the Home Sharing Library from my iPad?

We have an ipad 2 with ios 7, and an imac with itunes 11.1.3
Just heard about home sharing and want to use this - surprised we haven't heard of it before
home sharing is turned on in itunes (file > home sharing).
home sharing is on for the ipad (settings > music)
They are both connected to the same wifi network (usually our computer doesnt use wifi and is wired, but we turned wifi on just for this)
When I open music in the ipad (even after continually quitting and reopening the app) there is no 'more' button in the bottom right that there is supposed to be.
What is wrong? How do I access the library from the ipad? Help please!

    Welcome to the Apple community.
More does more than home sharing, so it's odd that it isn't there, even if home sharing wasn't working for some reason. Are you sure you are in the music app and not the iTunes App.

  • Can't access the Time Capsule Drive and attached USB drive

I bought the 3 TB Time capsule a couple of months ago.  I am using it as my wireless router for a cable modem and have attached a USB drive (seagate) to the TC.  I use the TC drive for time machine only.  It worked well at first, for about the first month.   Now I have trouble accessing the TC drive as well as the USB drive.  The router function works perfectly fine.  The drives show up in the Finder under Shared but  cannot connect.  Time machine does not back up because it says the back up drive is not available.  In disc utility, the base station shows with the correct name, but I can't access it. It asks for a pasword but does not respond, so I cannot reboot it from my computer.
If I restart the TC (power off and on), it works fine, I can access both drives.  However, this problem recurs, sometimes within a few days.  I have also noticed, which may be related, that when I enter time machine (when everything is working fine), some of the back-ups are blank.  There is a date and time but no actual back-up.  Not sure if this is related.
I'm runing Mavericks 10.9.2 on an older MacBook, 15" late 2008 with 2.4 ghz dual core.

    Hi Bob,
I updated Mavericks but still had the same problem, so I did a hard reset on TC, although I held the button for over 5 seconds and the amber light was flashing rapidly, it acted like a soft reset.  Still no change so I rebooted my laptop.   Still had an excellent internet connection but in AirPort utility, the TC is grayed out and says device not found.  Light on TC was amber.  So, I tried a hard reset again, but the light wouldn't flash at all.  Unplugged it and after pluggin back in, acted like a hard reset.  I restored previous settings and it is fine for the moment.  Will keep you posted if it recurs.  Hopefully it will not with updated Mavericks, but I get the feeling the problem may be the TC.
