HT1198 Shared iPhoto library file permissions are corrupted.
I am using the alternative option mentioned in the technote. The iPhoto library is located in /Users/Shared.
When my wife adds photos to iPhoto from her account, the files have a permission set of 640 (rw-------) on the file system.
When I add photos from my account, the files have a 666 (rw-rw-rw-) permission set.
I found that by using the iPhoto 'Examine and repair iPhoto Library file permissions' process it fixes the issue..although I'd really like to find the main cause of her files have a 640 permission set.
It may be too early to be confident, however I changed the permissions as follows: Note: the iPhoto Libray resides on iMac A.

I have successfully:
iMac A: Opened the iPhoto Library under my wife's account, then

iMac B: Opened the iPhoto Library under my account on another Mac on our network and made library modifications, then
iMac A: Opened the iPhoto Library under my wife's account.
In each case, iPhoto did not go into "examining the Library, nor did it need to repair permissions". The Library and iPhoto closed promptly without errors or inconsistencies.
I will keep my fingers crossed since it is hard to confidently trouble shoot without a higher level of understanding of Unix permissions and the details of the iPhoto Library.

Back up all data now.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. You can demote it back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:20 ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ 2> /dev/null
Be sure to select the whole line by triple-clicking anywhere in it. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Step 2
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar. A text window opens.
In the Terminal window, type this:
resetpassword
That's one word with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window opens. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select ▹ Restart from the menu bar. -
What is saved in the iPhoto library file when photos are backed up?
I have been using an external hard drive to back up my Mac files. My Mac stopped working, so now I have a PC netbook. I am trying to get some photo files off my external hard drive, but I can't find the ones I want. Instead, I found the iPhoto library files. What is in those? How can I open them? If I open them on my friend's Mac, will it hurt her files?
Assuming you had a managed Library the iPhoto Library will contain your photos, and many databse files.
You photos are in the Originals folder.
No, they won;t hurt your friend's Mac.
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' to choose which Library to open.

So I cannot even access the application. It was working fine yesterday and today I get this error message:

I have changed nothing. All the pictures are there on the computer. Help?!Reboot. Close any programs which open at start-up. Run Disk Utility (you can type this in the Spotlight search field at the right end of your Menubar).
In Disk Utility, select your drive from the list on the left, and click "Repair Disk Permissions". This will take a few minutes, but should be less than ten.
Reboot.

I am completely confused. I use aperture everyday and today when I tried to open it I got the following message " aperture cannot access this library" then it said to use this library , make sure its file permissions are set correctly"
So i read a bunch of posts and opened aperture while holding down option and command and repaired the file permissions. it did nothing, when I tried to open aperture I received the same message. So then i tried opening it while holding down just the option key. This brought up all of my libraries but when I chose the library i use daily the same message came up.
Does anyone know how to fix this and/ or why it is happening?
Thank youNo idea how to check the format, not familiar with Drobo products. Does the drive show up in Disk Utility? If so you should be able to see how it is formatted there.
How long has this setup been in use?
Aperture libraries have to be on locally connected drives formatted as OS Extended as per Apple (see Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture for example). While Aperture may work with other setups there is always the possibility that the library will become unusable at any point in time with no warning.
Try to find out the format of the drive and post back. Maybe something can be done but from the error messages you are getting I'm thinking the best course of action will be to restore from backups onto a correctly formatted drive.

Sharing iPhoto Library between Two User Accounts
Is there any way to fully share a single iPhoto library between two user accounts on one machine (iMac 2.0GHz dual core Intel, 10.5.1, iPhoto '08), without using an external drive (because I don't have one)? By share, I mean each user has full rights and priveledges to the entire library, regardless of who uploaded the pics. Holding down the option key on iPhoto startup does not work because my wife can't access the pics I loaded even though she's pointing to the shared library in a shared folder.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc. then:
Quit iPhoto in both accounts
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to an external HD set to ignore permissions. *You could also use a dmg*.
(Some people have had success putting the library in the Users/ Shared folder. If you do this make sure the file permissions are set to allow read/write access to everyone. But that's unlikely to work on 10.5 because of the way that the permissions have changed with the new OS.)

Sharing iphoto library on two macs?

I have two macs in the house. One a mini linked to a tv and an iMac. The iMac holds my primary iPhoto Library. What I would like to do is share the same library with the mini mac, without having to use the sharing option. Can I place it on an external drive and link both macs to that library? I have a synology NAS on which I have my iPhoto Libraries (multiple libraries, one for each year). I have both a macbook and a mac mini, both running os x 10.6.8 and both running Iphoto 11 (Version 9.2.3). I am only able to access the Iphoto libraries from my macbook for some reason. I cannot access them using my mac mini (I get the error "The iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk or you do not have permissions to make changes to it"). Also, when I try to access them with the mac mini, the libraries show up as folders, not as Iphoto icons/library files. Anyone have any idea why this is happening? I've turned on sharing as well, which doesn't seem to help (the library doesn't show up in the source list on the mac mini). I have also made sure the permissions on the library file/folder are open to everyone on my network.
A NAS is not a suitable environment for an iPhoto Library.
iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos.
All of the symptoms you report are caused by having the Libaries on an inappropriately formatted disk.
You're lucky it opens with one of your machines. At any point it may stop. -
How to use photos from a *shared iphoto library* in iWeb's Photos page
I have a large library of pictures in iPhoto. I am sharing it with my wife's Mac on our LAN. She would like to use many of these photos on my Mac in an iWeb page. We're both using 10.4.10 with G5s.
When we try to drag them over from my shared iPhoto library, we get the following error:
"Some items can't be used because you don't have enough access privileges or because they contain no content or they are corrupted.
unable to add object
unable to add object"
Sometimes it imports only the name of the picture to the iWeb page.
Is there a way around this? I tried messing with the Get Info "Permissions" section of my iPhoto folder. But nothing seemed to change.iPhoto can not merge libraries
And you must NEVER Import an iPhoto library - it does not work and creates a massive mess

Can't see shared iPhoto library
Computer A can't see Computer B's shared iPhoto library, but B can see A's. Both are running identical versions of iPhoto.
Both can see each other's iTunes library. Both can connect to each other over the network and transfer files to and fro (they're both on the same home wireless network, same subset).
Computer B has over 4000 photos, while Computer A has just a couple hundred; could that be a problem?
Here's what I have done:
Verified each iPhoto Preferences is set to "Look for shared photos" and "Share my photos".
Tried requiring a password, and not requiring a password
Verified System Preferences > Sharing > Firewall has "iPhoto Bonjour Sharing" checked.
Deleted each computer's iPhoto plist, and reconfiguring iPhoto Preferences as above
Turned off Little Snitch
Quit / restarted iPhoto a few times
Logged in / out, rebooted a few times
Researched iPhoto Help
Researched the discussion boards
Repaired permissions on both (as you can see, I'm resorting to voodoo tactics)
Googled the problem

Created a "test" user account on Computer B, logged in as "test", launched iPhoto, and set it to share / look for shared libraries.
No change - A can't see B, B can see A. So it's unrelated to the size of the library, probably unrelated to anything iPhoto, probably a network issue. But what? -
No permission to view video in shared iPhoto library
Hello. First time posting on the apple forum. I have set up our macbook pro such that from both of our accounts we share the same iPhoto library in a public/shared folder. We are using iPhoto '09. We are not having any problems sharing the photos. However, when we download our iPhone4 videos to iPhoto, we cannot view each other's videos. We keep getting the error "You do not have permission to view this video". I found the actual video files and made sure the permissions are set to everyone "read and write" yet it still doesn't allow us to see each other's videos in quicktime. Can anybody help me?

Thanks for your help. I rebuilt the iPhoto library's permissions which allowed my wife to view my videos from her user account. I still could not view hers until through her user account I rebuilt the iPhoto library's permissions again. This then let me view her videos and she could still view mine. So that was very helpful. However, any new videos that I add still run into the same problem. Videos I upload from my phone cannot be viewed from her user account. Please advise
I have the iPhoto library under my user account, in the dropbox of the public folder. Permissions on the Public folder and the Dropbox folder and the iPhoto library all say me, my wife and everybody is read and write permissions. iPhoto in both my and my wife's user accounts point to the same iPhoto library. Do I need to move the library to the "Shared" user account? Are their permissions that need to be changed on my iPhone or through iTunes?

IPhoto library file includes what?
Hi, I store my photos in folders under "Pictures". Sometime ago I opened up iPhoto and used it for my photos. I don't use it anymore as I find using my folders under "Pictures" far easier.
In "Pictures" there is a file called iPhoto library and this file size is 99GB. I want to get rid of it but obviously dont want any of my photos lost. Are these a duplicate of my photos which are stored under "Pictures"? How do I find out whether these are duplicates? I have taken a screen shot showing how I have organised my photos in various folders in "Pictures" and also the iPhoto library file that is appearing there.
Any advice in laymans terms will be much appreciated. Thanks very much.By default all photos you import into iPhoto are copies to the iPhoto library - normal procedure is to delete them from the source and ony have them in hte iPhoto library. We obviously have no way to knwo wha tyou have done
and note - there is no iPhoto file - theire is an iPhoto application in your applications folder and and iPhoto library - by default names iPhoto library and located in your pictures folder. It contains database files used by iPhoto for manageing photos and three version of your phtos - the original photo unchanged in the masters folder, a preview of the photo in the priviews folder which show the edited photos and a thumbnail in the thumbnails folder.
You can rignt click on the iPhoto library and show package contents and see eactly what is there - you can copy anything there outside for use without damage - if you change or delete anything from the iPhoto libray using the finder then it will corrupt it and iPhoto will no longe work properly with it
Personally iI think you are making a big mistake reverting to a file management system rather tha ta database managements system like iPhoto - it is much easier to use, very much more powerful and provided lots of additional feratures like intergration with other software, ability to share photos in many ways, etc - I suggest you take a class at yor local Apple store, read a book or take the online tutorials ( http://support.apple.com/videos#iphoto ) and learn how to use iPhoto - if hyou do I htink yhou will like it

Time Machine backup of shared iPhoto library

I created a shared iPhoto library as suggsetd at: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US, ,and I use TM.
When I eneter TM, I can't see the shared volume, instaed I can see under "Macnitsh HD/Users/Shared" somthing called a "photolibarary.sparseimage" that seem to be the same size as my iPhoto library.
Is my Iphoto libarary backedup?
Why can't I see the photos inside as I would if it would be in the Pictures libarary?
If I need, how do I restore it?

SA Time Machine back up is not readable from the FInder. It works in increments. So the first runis the whole object being abcked up, thereafter only the changes are recorded. So, to access the back up you need to restore. This produces the original plus all the changes since.
You have put your Library on a Disk Image. You need to restore the disk image and mount it to view the contents of the Library. -
Time Machine not backing up "iPhoto Library" file
I have run some utilities to make sure that my Time Machine backups are working and noticed that my "~/Pictures/iPhoto Library" file is not there in the backups. In the console I see this (paths cleaned up):

You can see that it does decide that it needs to be backed up (hence 70 GB of data) then it only backs up everything else. It will now do this every time.
Notes: This machine is running Mac OS X server and I do not have my home directory on my system drive. It could be a permissions problem, but I have tried fixing that (see below)
Since this problem started I have tried:
- Erasing my Time Machine disk and letting it do a full backup
- Holding down option-command while opening iPhoto and having it do all possible rebuilding steps
- Using Terminal to make sure permissions of the main file and package contents are set to same setup as my other computers that are workingI moved it to my system drive, was able to open it up fine with iPhoto ('09 BTW) and then ran Time Machine. Same thing happened, though this time it didn't say "needs deep traversal" like it did before.
As far as exclusions go, I double checked my "Do not back up" list and nothing in there that has to do with Pictures or iPhoto. Also, found and ran this command:
sudo mdfind "comapple_backupexcludeItem = 'com.apple.backupd'"
which output:
/{home}/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music Library.xml
/{home}/Music/iTunes/iTunes Library.xml
/{home}/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates

So that probably isn't it. It is weird that out of the 1.5 TB of data Time Machine backs up, it is only this file (folder)

Duplicate entries in Contacts and iCal
