The computer literally failed before I could deuath anything. I apparently have 1 more authorization left.
I had authorized a work machine a few years back, but IT took it and scrubbed it or junked it.
Why don't users see a list and just select from there?

There is no list, nor is there a need or a way to deauthorize the dead computer, until you reach the limit of 5.
At that point you can deauthorize all, then authotrize the active computers.

You can authorize a total of up to five systems, so unless you've hit that limit it's probably not really important that you deauthorize your dead unit now. For music bought from other sites or copied from your own CDs, then unless you signed up for iTunes Match then they won't be stored anywhere by Apple - have you not got a backup of your content on, for example, an external drive ?

I think it's in your iTunes account settings. I know you can't do it one by one. There is a button that will say "deauthorize all" which will put you back at zero and then you can authorize the ones you want.

You are sure you looking in your Library in /Users/YOUR_USERNAME/Library and not /Library at the top level of your harddrive?
When you open iCal what do you see? Are the calendars the two default Home and Work ones?
