Your sitter must have tried logging into the device using the wrong passcode. Do it too many times and the device becomes disabled.

i have tried to sign in to my apple id on my ipad mini and it says it cant connect to itunes storeThere is a difference between not being able to sign into your Apple ID and not being able to connect to the iTunes Store. You can be signed into your ID and still not be able to connect to the store.
I will assume that you are actually signed in - Settings> iTunes & App Store>Apple ID. That's one place where you sign into your ID.

wrong password resulted in disabling of the ipad. it says connect to itunes, i did but i am not able to activate the ipad.

You have to force iPad into Recovery Mode
