I recently purchased an iPhone online and it is loced and disabled. I attempted to connect to iTunes and add new device however this has not worked. How do I unlock this phone and reset it?

I changed my passcode about 2 hours ago and was trying to read a text but it said that its the wrong passcode. I dont know if my finger slipped or not but now its disalbed and giving me 1 try an hour. Try this:
Placing your device into recovery (DFU-Device Firmware Upgrade) mode:
Follow these steps to place your iOS device into recovery mode. If your iOS device is already in recovery mode, you can proceed immediately to step 6.
   1. Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the
       other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
   2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds
       until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
              * If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the
                Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off,
                release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the
       device. The device should turn on. Note: If you see the battery charge warning,
       let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some
       charge, and then start with step 2 again.
4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen.
       When this screen appears you can release the Home button:

Note: When using recovery mode, you can only restore the device. All user content on the device will be erased, but if you had previously synced with iTunes on this computer, you can restore from a previous backup. See this article for more information.

You should still be able to manually manage the music on your iPhone within iTunes. Make sure that when your iPhone is plugged in, look in the Summary tab to see if “Manually manage music and videos” is enabled and you can even you turn off Automatically Sync when this iPhone is connected. Do you know there is the lock/unlock thing on the top or bottom right? If that doesn't work, hold down the middle circle and top portion of the circle button at the same time and hold until the screen goes black. Let go and soon an apple will appear. If you wait / press some buttons (i am not sure exactly how this part works) it will turn white and then the screen will appear again. You have all your music and everything still but the problem should be gone. This also works if your iPod ever freezes.

You can try this: If you can't update or restore your iOS device
If he had not turned on Find My iPad then it will work, if he had you will run into Activation Lock. If you do run into it you can take a copy of the will (or probate finding if he died without one) and/or a Letter Testamentary and ask if they can look up where he purchased it. If they can, and you have the other documents, they can reset it for you.

Runnig 10.6.8 on a MacBook PRO.....

The easiest fix if you're running Snow Leopard is to export all your contacts, then import them into something like google (I already had a gmail account), and then just use google to sync your contacts instead of icloud (via the sync with Google button in the address book settings).
Its a bit sluggish to update, but it works well. You can then point your iphone, and other iOS devices to use google for contacts too.
If Apple don't want to look after their customers, other companies will gladly do so....
