What kind of backup? If it's a TM backup then open Address Book and select Address Book Help from the Help menu. Search for "restore from time machine." You'll find an article on how to restore entries from a TM backup.
If this is simply a cloned backup then navigate to the /Home/Library/Application Support/ folder on the backup drive and copy the AddressBook folder to the same location on your hard drive.
Then navigate to /Home/Library/Preferences/ and copy the com.apple.addressbook.plist and com.apple.addressbook.abd.plist files from the backup to the same location on your hard drive.
Address Book must not be running.

A way to restore contacts only

I went to back up my iPhone to my computer but it had a bit of a fit on me and ended up crashing in a way I hadn't seen before. As a result I lost all my contacts. I want to recover these however I don't want to simply restore my iPhone as I have downloaded some apps and added a some contacts since my last back up and I don't want to lose them either.
Interestingly I started entering some of my contacts that I had I still had the number for through the messages, but when I did some of the old contact photos started appearing, except for the wrong people. So the phone still must have the recollection of the contacts.
In conclusion, is there a way that I can restore the contacts only so that I don't lose my apps?

you won't lose your apps if you restore from your backup that has all your info in it. you always have the ability to download apps that you've had in the past even if you were to get a brand new phone today because they're attached to your apple id
if you're worried about losing contacts that you have now but aren't in your backup, just write them down somewhere and restore from your backup. you can then add them back to the phone and make a new backup once everything is the way you want it

The iphone is designed to be synced to your computer or cloud service regularly. Your contacts will be in whatever program/service that you have selected to sync.

It follows a call for help I had from a friend setting up an iPhone on Windows. The issue was that he was having lots of problems importing a vCard file (vcf) exported from an LG Viewty into Outlook so that the contacts inside it could be synchronised with his new iPhone.
If you're a new iPhone user on Windows, it's possible that you will run into problems if you try to import a vCard file containing multiple contacts from your old phone into Microsoft Outlook. This is due to Outlook's notoriously weak support for the vCard format which means that it will only recognise the first contact in the file. If your old phone contained hundreds of contacts and you don't want to manually re-enter them on the new one, this can be a major headache...
Fortunately, there is an easy way to bypass this issue and all you need is the vCard file e.g. mycontacts.vcf and an e-mail account such as Gmail set up on your iPhone.
Thanks to the iPhone's excellent vCard support, you can import the contacts directly onto your iPhone by e-mailing the vCard file (as an attachment) to an account that can be accessed directly on your iPhone. When you open the vCard attachment, you will be prompted to save the contacts to your address book and hey presto, you're done.
