‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just canceling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.

  • HT1212 ipad mini disabled - tried Apple's suggestion and it still didn't work

I locked myself out of my Ipad Mini and I went on Apple's website to try to do a factory reset or something that would unlock it.
    I tried the following suggestion:
If you have never synced your device with iTunes, or you do not have access to a computer
If you see one of following alerts, you need to erase the device:
"iTunes could not connect to the [device] because it is locked with a passcode. You must enter your passcode on the [device] before it can be used with iTunes."
"You haven't chosen to have [device] trust this computer"
If you have Find My iPhone enabled, you can use Remote Wipe to erase the contents of your device. If you have been using iCloud to back up, you may be able to restore the most recent backup to reset the passcode after the device has been erased.
Alternatively, place the device in recovery mode and restore it to erase the device:
Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to shut down.
While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
Continue holding the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
iTunes will alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then restore the device.
THIS DID NOT WORK! I'm back to square one after it detected the device in recovery mode it took 10 minutes to do a restore and the device is still locked up. What are my other options?

    Recovery Mode Step by Step
    1. Hold Sleep/Wake button down and slide to turn off iPad
    2. Turn on computer and launch iTune (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)

  • Why would iPad mini disable itself when correct passcode is entered?

My daughter's iPad mini disabled itself even though an incorrect password was never entered? It started with a 15 minute lock out followed by 30. At some point it went to a 60 minute lockout and after a half hour or so reverted back to 60 minutes for no reason. I finally got my hands on it and after the 60 minute clock expired I correctly entered the first three digits of the passcode and the iPad promptly disabled itself for good. This makes no sense. I'm aware of the restore drill.  What I want to know is this: Why did this happen and is there some sort of Hail Mary play that will prevent a complete restore.

    Did you reboot the router?
If that doesn't work, test it... will it connect to a public router (wifi) like in a bookstore or public area?  If it works, then the problem is with your router.

    Odd places?
Could you be experiencing, browsing a page, then get sent to the app store to buy an app? If that's the case, it's a browser hijack ad and there's not much you can do about it beyond not going to that site or using an adblock app.
You can try to go into safari and clear the cache, which may clear away what's sending you to that site
Beyond that, a bit more info may help with coming up with a  better answer.

ok, I did, and it said again congrats your iPhone is unlocked, but, when it said there was a new carrier update, I cancelled it, but, it asked me again, I cancelled again, I guess I'm scared it will lock it again if I allow the carrier update.
Oh, there it goes again, this time on the phone, arg. I hit update, I hope it doesn't freak out.
I'm glad I didn't destroy the SIM like I almost did. But, it will come out again, longer battery life with the cell portion turned off.

  • I received an iPad Mini today for my birthday

Alright so, as the subject says, I got a new iPad Mini today for my birthday. At first it was working perfectly. I was able to connect to the network, download a few apps and then all of a sudden, it lost connection. I tried multiple times to get it to connect again. Nothing. So I went online and tried different things; resetting network settings, resetting general settings but nothing worked. So I went on the Apple website and chatted with someone. They had me update the software (it starts off with 6.1.2 I think, so I updated to 6.1.3). After that, it worked perfectly again...for a while. Once again, I lost connection. Tried resetting the router, resetting everything again. But nothing worked. So I got on the Apple site again, and was told that it was a hardware issue and to exchange it. So I did, and the new one doesn't connect either. Now I'm ****** and about to say screw you Apple, but when the iPad was working I loved it too much to do so. Any suggestions or comments or solutions? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • IPad mini disabled

Hello, my grandparents received an IPad mini as a gift recently. As you may expect, they are not technology fans, and they didn't know how to sync their IPad to the computer. So they created a password, and then forgot it. Then they tried to unlock it and accidentally disabled it. I've tried to repair this by following the steps I read in the support section, but as they've never synchronized it with a computer this couldn't be done. Can anyone help me?
