Place the iPod in recovery mode using one of these programs and then restore via iTunes.

The problem started when I turned on the computer this morning. I tried to install Mozilla 4 from your website and that installed but I still have nothing on the top.

It may be due to Firebug. Seeing as how you're a web developer, it's very possible you have this installed. The latest version, 1.7X a10, appears to cause everything you described. I downgraded to "a8" and that seems to have fixed everything.
I also recreated a profile from scratch before trying this out, so I can't guarantee it's definitely Firebug.

To get new UI you need to hide the menu bar. To do that in the View menu select Toolbars, then click on the "Menu Bar" entry.
If you need access to the menus you can press either Alt or F10 to temporarily display them.

The screen is completely black and won't do anything. I have tried charging it over night and nothing happened. It was never near water. I have a brand new Ipod touch with front facing camera. Not sure which generation it is. My wife connected the iPod Touch and chose the restore option when connecting to iTunes. If you can't get it to shut down or restart when holding down the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons and you can't get it recognized in iTunes to restore it, the iPod may have suffered a hardware failure and will need to go to Apple for service. Someone else here may have additional suggestions, though.
There is no "fifth generation" iPod touch, by the way, just for the sake of clarity; not yet, anyway.

When it was dead i put it on a charger. once it got charged up it started turning on with the apple symbol. then it turned white again and then restarted without me touching anything. When it restarted it turned the blue again. i took it off the charger immediantly because i didnt want it getting as hot as it was before. ive tried every way i know how to fix it but not putting it in the computer because i dont want it to ruin the computer. Please help because i really dont want to get a new ipod. Ive read a lot about how to fix it here on apple but there all the same answer and it still doesnt work. Please respond ASAP! thank you! i could really use your help right now!

First see if placing the iPod in Recovery Mode will allow a restore.
Next try DFU mode and restore.

After the Apple logo appears, what happens then? Can you hear any sounds or if you tap on the screen, does it seem like apps can open or are you just seeing a black screen? You might have a hardware problem, but you can try restoring the software and see what happens.
Read this in its entirety before you do anything. Make sure you read the sections at the end about using recovery mode.

Hello skdog I possibly think your ipod touch is black because it has not charged. If your dock is broken it might just mean the dock will be broken and so might be the USB port. You should see an Apple shop nearby and hand it over and see what they can do. I hope this information works!
