What does it mean when you computer crashes and when you turn it back on it shows you a blank blue screen with a little folder and a question mark in the middle? It's a old imac from 1997.

I don't have original discs that it came with.
Then you still can use the second option with the keyboard combo I posted, called "resetting the PRAM."
Also when you way hold the c key down do you mean turn computer off and turn back on holding the c key?
Yes, or you can simply restart. As you don't have the CDs, this isn't on the plate any more.
The internal backup battery is not expensive and, in most iMacs is user-replacable. If yours has a tray-loading optical drive like this one:
it takes a major teardown to replace the internal battery. If this is the case, you'd be better off to leave the computer plugged in all the time; that eliminates the main reason for having a working battery.
If it has a slot-loading optical drive like this one:
things are much easier. The battery is visible through the RAM access door on the bottom of the computer case. The manual:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iMacG3_2000UserManual.PDF
has sketches of how to access the RAM and therefore the backup battery. Unfortunately, the pdf on the manual goes up sideways on-screen and the RAM instructions are pretty deep into the manual. It's probably easier to scroll (for a while) to the section on adding RAM and print the applicable pages.
When you work on the battery, some sort of non-conductive pliers or large tweezer or forceps help unless you have tiny fingers. Make sure to note the polarity of the old battery and install the new one in the same orientation.
The battery itself is readily available. If price is no oblect, you can get it for a small rasom from Radio Shack Store ("Tandy" outside the US) as part number 23-026.
Online, they are dirt-cheap even after adding shipping. I buy backup batteries form this outfit:

What does it mean when you get a "The iTunes library file cannot be saved. There is not enought memory available." ? And what can I do to correct it?

Well, I installed the latest iTunes this AM, works perfectly.  Although for some reason it did lock up after playing a song today.
Horror stories?  That's a bit overly dramatic.
    No, it isn't.
The issue you are experiencing is one that has occurred in multiple versions of iTunes, a simple search would have revealed this.
A simple search was conducted, no one seemed to have an answer.  Do you always adopt such a haughty attitude?  Or was I just lucky.

  • What does it mean when my ipad is in Recovery mode? It's connected to my imac for software update and it says I must "restore" the ipad before itunes can be used. Will I lose everything on my ipad?

What does it mean when my ipad is in Recovery mode? It's connected to my imac for software update and it says I must "restore" the ipad before itunes can be used. Will I lose everything on my ipad?

Unless you have a backup from which you can restore, yes you will lose all of your data and settings.
You should be able to sync your content back to the iPad if you have been syncing with iTunes all along. If you don't sync with iTunes, you can download much of your paid content again for free as long as you use the same Apple ID. This explains downloading past purchases.

Unfortunately, at this point, you must restore the device before you can move on. There is nothing you can do to avoid it now.

Is the hold switch in the on position?  Try resetting the iPod. To do this, press and hold both the Select/Center and menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.  The iPod may have simply locked up.

  • What does it mean when your computer says that someone is using your IP address

What does it mean when someone is using your IP address and what should i do...

Expanding on Bob's explanation, be sure you haven't set a manual IP address, thus being the culprit for this problem. In System Preferences / Network / Advanced... / TCP/IP section, Configure IPv4 should be set to Using DHCP. If that is not the case, then some network miscreant has purloined the IP address your Mac was using.
First try clicking on the Renew  DHCP Lease and see if the DHCP server figures it out and assigns a different address. Else, try disconnecting from the network (if on Wi-Fi, turn Wi-Fi off in the previous window, if cabled disconnect the patchcord), wait a little while and reconnect. Then hopefully the DHCP server will realize the address was purloined and assign a different one.

  • What does it mean when the computer says it does not detect a battery?

Its usually on the house power when its on the desk, and it has been connected all night. So what does this mean? I have had this machine about 2 weeks, and should not have to replace a battery this soon.

When do you see this message?
    Any error codes?

  • What does it mean when the computer says "i am hanging here"

I was cleaning off my hard drive to give the computer to charity, and I must have thrown too much away.  Now the computer, when booting, displays a bunch of jibberish writing on the display, ending with the phrase "I am hanging here."  I already backed up the data, so I could clean the hard drive and start from scratch, but I don't know how to begin the boot-up process so that I can put the operating system and "software restore" discs in.  Any suggestions?
    Dick

It means you've made it impossible for the machine to boot properly. You will need to erase the drive and reinstall OS X.
    Erase and Install OS X
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs,) then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install OS X.

  • What does it mean when my computer starts making a ticking noise

My computer (im on my brothers computer right now) is making a ticking sound on startup. Then it brings me to a screen that shows a blinking file with a question mark on it. I put in the grey disk and it took me to a screen that asked to choose a destination but there was no options to choose so i quit the installer but then it took me to another screen that had 2 options. The disk that is inside the computer and then network startup. I chose network startup and it then asked me to restart. So i did and now the computer is in the middle of restarting. Now it took my back to the Mac OS X page and is asking me to choose a language again...

More than likely the hard drive is failing or failed.

  • What does it mean when my phone shows a picture directing me to plug in to itunes after i did a software update?

My phone said I had a new software update and I was hesitant to do it because last time I did it erased everything from my phone. Well, I did and once again its asking me to connect to Itunes as it did last time. What are the proper steps I am suppose to take?

It means your phone is in recovery mode and you need to plug it into your computer running iTunes to restore it.

  • What does it mean when it says '' the safety of this file cannot be determi

I'm relatively new to the apple experience, and earlier today when I was trying to download the new Windows Media Player, it said "the safety of this file cannot be determined". When it finished downloading it just appeared to be a blank file that I couldn't open. This happened with several other software as well. I was wondering what this was about and what do I need to complete downloads. Thanks in advance.

Two issues, possibly related to each other.
I'm relatively new to the apple experience, and earlier today when I was trying to download the new Windows Media Player, it said "the safety of this file cannot be determined".
Do you have 'Open safe files after downloading' checked in Safari's preferences?
As a security measure following the discovery of certain system exploits, Safari was updated to include a security prompt similar to the kind described, in the event that the item downloaded was detected to contain an application. You can disable the security prompt using Taboo (freeware) or Saft (shareware).
When it finished downloading it just appeared to be a blank file that I couldn't open.
Some, if not most, applications are distributed as Stuff-it archives which Mac OS X cannot handle without the proper software. Try it again after downloading StuffIt Expander.

  • What does it mean when I turn on my iPod Touch and a white screen shows up?  Nothing else comes up.

Everytime I try to turn it on, a white screen comes up and nothing else.  I just used by iPod Touch last week and everything was normal.

No, you don't have a virus, but if that folder has a flashing '?', it means your Mac can't find its' system:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1440
    or, other possible causes:

Take a look at those and see if any of those suggestions help.

  • TS1372 what does it mean when you cant restore your ipod nano and it gives you the code 1433 ?

How do i fix it ?

Some users have been able to resolve this issue by simply closing iTunes and re-opening it.  It might even be necessary to reboot your PC.
Otherwise, reset the Nano with it still connected to a high powered USB 2.0 port on your PC and then try to restore it again.

That's an issue with your system. Try removing the iTunes and the other APPLE software related from your system and reinstall it again.
