HT1218 Problem using a 2nd AE to "Extend" wifi.

I have added a 2nd AE which happily sets up by joining my network. I want to use it to extend the Wi-Fi signal but after changing the wireless setting to "extend  a network" it fails to setup and it shows an ! to the left of the name and the number 1 in a red circle on the right. There are no means to get this Firmware update from that screen. It only asks me if I want to "forget" it.
So I have to "forget" it, power it down and a while after power up it reappears. I click on it, "edit" and change the wireless setting to "join a network". I have done this three times with the same result.
The 1 means the AE needs a Firmware update. On one support page it said "The red number beside any device in Airport Utility indicates that the divice needs a firmware update. Click on the device and hit the update button. The firmware will update and the red number should be gone" I click on it and I only get the "Forget it?" option. In the "Join only..." I only get edit and no option there to update the Firmware.
Do I need the update and if so how to do it?
If that does not fix it how to I make the AE "Extend" my Wi-Fi?
Thanks in anticipation.

PROBLEM SOLVED
Using 2 Airport Express to extend the Wi-Fi Range and set-up Airplay.
I recently had problems in doing just that and was helped by a contributor Bob Simmonds. (Thanks Bob for all your time) You might I hope find this helpful.
AE A1264 (1st Gen 802.11a/b/g/Draft N)
AE A1392 (2nd Gen 802.11a/b/g/n simultaneous dual-band)
Airport Utility Version 6.1 (AU)
iMac Mountain Lion
French ADSL or Broadband modem with Wi-Fi
This is what I did…
First, after several attempts to configure the AEs, I did a Factory default on both. (Unplug, use a paperclip to hold in the reset button while you plug in the AE, wait until the light flashes fast, release)
The first AE is connected by ETHERNET CABLE to the ISPs Modem*. This is confirmed in AU by a solid white line between the big world and the AE. A dotted line means it is a Wireless connection.
Open AU and wait until the AE is recognised which can take up to a minute. Click on the AE Image and click on « edit ».  Or look for it in « Other Base Stations »
In the window that opens click on the tab « Base Station »:
Name the Base station and give it a password.
Open the next tab « Internet »
Connect using : DHCP (the rest is automatic)
Open the next tab « Wireless»
Network Mode « Create a Wireless Network »
Name the Wireless Network you wish to create.
Set your security Password
Open the next tab « Network»
Router Mode « Off (Bridge Mode) »
Open the next tab « Airplay» and check box « Enable Airplay »
NEXT
Plug in the second AE, in my case it is the A1392
Wait for it to be recognised. It will appear adjacent to the first AE  with a dotted line (Wireless connection). Click on the second AE’s icon. Click on « edit »
Open the tab « Base Station »
Name it and set a password (same for both in my case)
Open the next tab « Internet »
Connect using : DHCP (the rest is automatic)
Open the tab « Wireless»
Network Mode « Extend a Wireless Network »
Choose the Wireless Network just created
Set your security Password
The contents Under the tab « Network » will be greyed out.
Open the next tab « Airplay» and check box « Enable Airplay »
If the AEs are shown with a steady green spot to their left all should be OK
TEST  THEM
If either of the AEs are shown with a blinking green spot to their left or an exclamation mark and/or a number in a red circle to the right then there is a problem. The number indicates the number of problems. You may see a short list of them when you click on the AE icon.
If there is a problem and the AE Icon only gives you the option to « forget » then click on « forget » unplug thje AE and replug it in again to start over. I had this a few time and so resorted to a Factory default reset.
I also had aproblem using the ETHERNET CABLE the first caused problems during setup. Changed it and it seemed better.
* If you want full use of the I simultaneous dual-band feature of the new AE then make it the main base station. I
If anyone sees any errors please tell me.

  • Can I use my old TC as extended wifi over my new TC?

I just bought a 2TB TC, and it's working fine in bridge mode (because my provider uses NAT). My old 500MB TC (bought in 2008) is still working, so I wonder:
    1) If I can still use the old TC as an extended wifi. If so, how do I do it?
    2) If I can use the HD of the old TC as an extended HD, with my regular folders/subfolders/files on it.
    3) If I can access either my old or my new TC from a remote location over the Internet to get specific files. If so, how do I activate WAN? I can't see the setting on Airport Utility, though I've already enabled sharing there (on my new TC).
Thanks for any advise. I'm a newbie in this.

    Success! I was able to:
    1) Reconfigure my old TC 500MB as an extended wireless network to my base station, a new TC 2TB, by following the instructions in the link you provided.
    2) Erase my old files in the TC 500MB and replace this with my directory. Now it will serve as my archives. I don't have to refurbish them often since my new TC 2TB now acts as my Time Machine.
    3) Make both the base station and extended WiFi work, and each of the disks of the old and new TC too!
    HOWEVER, here's the sad part:
When I tried to connect to the old TC via Finder > Go > Connect to Server, I discovered that the address of my old TC is also dynamic, just like the address of my new TC.
Ungh. What recourse do I have to this problem short of demanding a static address from my provider (which I don't think they'll give, since they think a static address will lead everyone to establish a server business)?
Thanks in advance for whatever solution you might advise!

  • Problem using Apple TV with TP-Link Wifi Extender

    Hi,
I have been having problems connecting my Macbook Pro to my Apple TV via airplay and I believe it is due to the new wifi extender that I have installed in my home. Basically, the wifi extender uses the powerlines in the walls to extend the connection from my office at one end of the house, to my living room at the other. I am sitting here with my Macbook Pro in front of the TV using Apple TV, both connected to the same wifi SSID but still no option to mirror or extend my desktop onto the Apple TV. Can anyone help? Please? This is also affecting my Homesharing. It's as if the wifi extender is actually technically a second wifi network and my devices are getting confused and not finding each other.
    Joe

I have the same Activity set up for my Harmony One.  (First, I believe you mean "Devices," not "Components.")  You appear to have some of your buttons customized wrong for the Apple TV Activity, since you said other Activities work fine, like Watch TV, etc.  Within the Harmony software, go to the Activities (NOT Devices) tab, choose Watch Apple TV (or whatever you have named this activity), and then choose Customize Buttons.  Then click the Standard Buttons tab, and then go down the whole list (of dropdown menus) to assign, re-assign, or confirm that all the proper Commands are assigned to all the proper Devices.  For example, to correct your volume control issue, choose your Receiver to control the volume up and down Commands, etc.  If this is done correctly, you won't have to go to Devices (for the receiver) any more on your remote to control the volume. It will all be controlled within the remote's Activity function, as you've requested.  It has to work, since your other Activites are finding your receiver properly.  If not, then Logitech's Harmony support has been helpful to me in the past, assuming you're still in warranty, etc.  I hope this helps.  Good luck!

  • Using a 2nd SA520W to "extend" a wireless NW

Apologies if I overlooked this somewhere..
But I want to extend the wireless coverage in a clients office.
1st SA520 is in a Rack at back of premise.
Want to provide a couple of 7925 IP phones for use by staff.
Even with the excellent coverage a 520 usually provides, it ain't happening in a Rack, even with "aerial extenders" - especially 50-60 odd metres from the front of the retail area...
Is there a way/process to allow the 2nd 520 to co-exist with the first one, without causing issues with overlapping signals? hence allowing coverage across the entire building floor.
    (if that makes sense)

If i am reading you correctly, you have 2 sa520w and you would like to turn the second one into an access point to increase the wireless coverage in the office.
You would need to turn off dhcp on the second sa520w and make to plug the cable coming from the other router into the lan side of this device. You can give the device an address on the same subnet but not in the dhcp range. The next step would be to setup the wireless setting to use the same ssid and also the same security setting. Make sure you put this router on a different channel. What i mean by this is if the main sa520w is on channel 1 then set the second one up on channel 6 or 11. It is very import to not have dhcp running on the second sa520w because it will take down you network in this setup.
This setup would allow the main router to still hand out all of the dhcp addresses to all the device on the network requesting dhcp. The main router is still you default gateway for the network. Hope this has been helpful.
    Thanks

  • Problems using wired airport express to extend airport extreme wifi

I've followed the instructions in this community to use a wired airport express to extend an airport extreme wifi network.  Here is the issue I'm having.
The airport express wifi network has the same name as the airport extreme wifi network.  So far so good.  My laptop will pick up the airport express wifi in my office, and the airport extreme wifi in the other part of the house without any problems.
However, where the signals for the two overlap, my laptop will often latch on to the weaker wifi signal (I can tell by the number of bars) and my connection speed slows down significantly.  Since both airports have the same wifi name, I can't manually switch it to the better signal.
Has anyone encountered this and have suggestions?  My only solution was to give the two separate wifi names so i can switch manually, but this is an inelegant solution.

Hey dude, i'm having the same problem and i didn't find a proper solution for it, appart of creating another network as you said.
Its weired  cuz in my case only the small things doesn't connect to the new router(using 2 airport extreme's) such as the iphones ipods and apple tv, but my mac did it great change the signal all the time i went from the basement to my room. So i just create another network and for me it wasn't a big deal to change it all the time i go to the basement, even more when use a mac.
I know thats not the point when you have two wifi routers, but you know it's tolerable.
    Greetings!

  • Can I use an Airport Express to extend wifi w/o TC?

Hi-my setup is this: I am using an Linksys modem and an ASUS router. I have a new Time Capsule but I am only using that for Time Machine backups. My wifi signal is weak upstairs and I was wondering if I could put an Airport Express up there to extend my network.... Remember that my TC is not being used as a router. I am hoping that I can just plug in a new-but-not-yet-purchased Airport Express upstairs and it will strengthen my wifi upstairs. Will that work? Thanks for the help!!! Judy
PS-I have a MB Pro running the latest version of Mavericks, an iPhone 4S and a 4th Gen iPad.

I am hoping that I can just plug in a new-but-not-yet-purchased Airport Express upstairs and it will strengthen my wifi upstairs. Will that work?
An AirPort Express could extend the wireless signal provided by another Apple product, in this case the TC, but since the TC is not being used this way on your network, the Express would be of no value to you. It cannot wirelessly extend the signal provided by the ASUS wireless router.
Check with ASUS support or an online forum for suggestions on a repeater or extender that would do what you need.

  • How can I use my 2nd TC HD as an attached (non TM) drive?

I am using my 2nd TC to extend my wi-fi network and would like to use its HD as a SuperDuper back up volume whilst retaining TM backups on the No 1 TC.  Any suggestions please.

Both of your Time Capsules should show up under the SHARED heading when you open Macintosh HD or the Finder from the dock.
    Can you see them?
If yes, then SuperDuper should be able to as well....if you have the full featured version of SuperDuper (not free).

  • Can you extend a wifi network using a 2nd wired Airport Extreme ?

    Hi
my cable broadbank service enters one corner of my house via a router/modem that I have running in modem mode.
I then have a ethernet cable to a new Airport Extreme (my primary router) next to it that I am using to create a Wifi network (with the same name for 2.4GHz and 5GHz)
I need to get a strong a signal as possible to opposite corners of the house.
At the moment I have a 2nd Airport Extreme (my secondary router) in the opposite corner of the house which Extends the network from the first router.
This AE also has some devices in the same room connected to it by ethernet.
Thise devices are getting very patchy internet service.
I have speeds over 100Mbps available close to my primary router, and around 7 Mbps next to the secondary.
I also have an unused ethernet cable running from the room with the primary router to a room near to the secondary router.
    My question:
If I plugged my secondary router into that ethernet cable (into it's input socket) and the other end to the output of the primary router: would I be able to use the secondary router to extend the same Wifi network that the primary was broadcasting ? Or would I end up having to create a completely new network (and then worry about mobile devices switching between them when you move around the house).
    Followup question:
If the idea above doesn't pan out - would I typically be better off stationing the secondary router in the middle of the house to extend the network range - or in a far corner as it currently is ?
    thanks in advance.
    Christian.

If I plugged my secondary router into that ethernet cable (into it's input socket) and the other end to the output of the primary router: would I be able to use the secondary router to extend the same Wifi network that the primary was broadcasting ?
Yes. Apple's set up wizard calls this "extend using Ethernet".  Since there is virtually no signal loss through the Ethernet cable, the second AirPort Extreme will receive a much faster signal to extend.
If the idea above doesn't pan out - would I typically be better off stationing the secondary router in the middle of the house to extend the network range
Yes.  As it stands, the wireless signal has really slowed down a great deal by the time that it reaches the far end of the house. And, the Extreme can only wirelessly extend the speed of signal that it receives from the "main" Extreme.  It can make the signal that it receives stronger, but it cannot make the signal go faster.
So, locating the second Extreme about half way between the "main" Extreme and far end of the house would be the best compromise. The network speed will still slow by at least half when you do it this way, and any obstructions in the signal path will slow the signal even more.
It is easy to see why extending using Ethernet.....if possible.....provides much better performance for the network.

  • Problems using time capsule to extend wireless network

    Hi all,
For some months I had to move to Germany for work (I'm from Italy, sorry for my English).
I am sharing internet with some other people, the wi-fi router is in their apartment, so basically I don't have access.
As the signal is strong enough only in one room I would like to use my time capsule to extend it also in the other rooms.
But when I try to extend it, my macbook pro connects to the network I would like to extend and the time capsule is not seen anymore.
To see the time capsule again in the airport utility i have to reset it to factory default.
    Do you have any idea?
The wireless network is WPA2 protected, the provider is the German "Unity Media".

As the signal is strong enough only in one room I would like to use my time capsule to extend it also in the other rooms.
Apple's "extend" feature will only work if the Time Capsule is "extending" the wireless signal from another Apple wireless router. In other words, the "extend" feature is not compatible with wireless routers from other manufacturers.
You will need to connect the Time Capsule to the wireless router using a wired Ethernet connection.  Connect from one of the LAN <-> ports on the wireless router to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule.  Then, you can configure the Time Capsule to provide a separate wireless network for your use.

  • Can I use an airport extreme to extend the range of my wireless modem

Can I use an Airport Extreme to extend the range of my wireless modem?
At one end of my house I have a dual band wireless ADSL modem which provides my internet connection and I want to extend (improve) the wireless coverage to the other of the hosue where my Apple TV (2nd gen) is located. I have being trying to extend my wireless network with an Airport Extreme but so far without success. I can get the Airport to join the wireless network, but I suspect that it is only acting as another client and not actually extending the wireless range. There is a setting in the Airport configuration to "extend and existing network", however when I choose this option the Airport no longer connects to my existing wireless network and I am beginning to suspect that this fuction only works with another Apple device (Airport Extreme or Express).
Has anyone been able to extend the range of a third party wireless router / modem with an AirPort Extreme? If so, any advice that you can offer wold be appreciated.
    Regards
    Michael

    Thanks Tesserax,
Your answer has confirmed my suspicions.
Option 1 from your suggested solutions is not a goer because the modem and Airport Extreme are in different parts of the house making it impractical to run a cable between the two devices.
I did try option 2 and bought a Netgear range extender, which according to Netgear it would work with my D-Link modem - not.
However I have managed to work around the problem (sort of) by using the Airport Extreme to create a wireless network between my iMac 27 and my Apple TV. The idea is that the iMac will act as a router between ethernet connected ADSL modem and the wirelessly connected Apple TV.
The good news is that I am now able to play the content from my iTunes library on my Apple TV without interruptions due to a poor wireless connection . Although the connection from the Apple TV to the internet is not working I think this is most likely just a configuration issue and for me it is not really a show stopper.

  • Can I use an 2nd (or even 3rd) Apple TV device in our entertainment room that has multiple TV's

First of all I'm wiling to buy as many apple TV's as needed, so my question is not about how to do everything with one Apple TV device...but rather how to get multiple Apple TV devices in the same general location of the house to work without interfearing with one another. We bought a new (2nd) TV for the entertainment room so that our kids could use the 2nd TV for putting stuff up (via Apple TV airplay) from their phones and ipads...and still watch TV on the other TV.
Well, it turns out they often don't want to watch TV but rather use airplay from different devices on BOTH TV'S. Currently, we have one (2nd or 3rd generation) apple TV already and one problem/issue I have noticed was that if someone (Watcher #1) was already streaming to the Apple TV via airplay...a second person (Watcher #2) using a different device (iphone, ipad, etc) could send something via airplay to the same Apple TV which would automatically "override" and cause Watcher #1''s program/video/pic to stop and thus allow Watcher #2 to start watching...much to the annoyance of Watcher #1. (With 2 kids you can just imagine the arguing and fighting that goes on)
So, besides trying to eliminate this "battle of the airplays"...I'm curious if we buy a second Apple TV for the same room...how can we hook it up so there is no conflict...and how will which apple TV know which device is trying to to send airplay to it. I get the feeling that that we will end up with 2 TV's playing the same feed from one device...unless there is a better and more proper way.
Also, I would like to add a3rd Apple TV device to the TV in our home office so that I can use as well...but because of the close proximity to the entertainment room...I fear that if I try to send a feed to the apple TV in the office it will start to play on the TV's in the entertainment room.

You can have as many ATV's as you want, but I STRONGLY STRONGLY STRONGLY encourage you to use wired connections on all of them.  AirPlay is a god awful bug ridden failure prone feature under the best of circumstances.   Using it over WiFi is much worse.  And the band width load of three different devices connection to your WiFi access point to three different ATV's (total of six concurrent connections) will very likely over whelm your WiFi hardware.
I actually encourage people to always use a wired connection with ATV in general.  It saves a LOT of head ache and frustration.  With three it is even more important.   As far as controlling which one you connect to.  They are three separate devices.  You select which one you want to send something too.  So if you want to send something to the one in your office then just select that ATV.   It would probably be good to setup their names to be the location.   So something like "Office Apple TV".
As far as kids being brats and intentionally interrupting each others AirPlay connections...   Well there is only so much Apple can fix.  If someone else on the network that has access is deturnomand to be a jerk and interrupt someone else content they would be able to.

After that, I tried setting permissions for the cwallet.sso file to ugo+rwx, but this leads to the same problems as mentioned above.
My second try was to setup an external WLS 12c, but it seems to be not yet possible to connect to a WLS 12c from within jDeveloper.
Do you have any ideas ?
Thank you in advance for your help.
    Regards,
    Robin

After debugging the WLS Initialisation with jdb, I recognized that there was some trouble with dependent libraries.
In the end, I solved my problem by using another OS (Ubuntu 11.10) for development. There, the WLS works out of the box, even with 64-Bit libraries.
    Thank you for your help.

  • Could not complete the command because of a problem using the Adobe Color Engine

    Hi all
This bizarrely started this morning - completely out of the blue - and I've no idea why.
Setup: Mac 10.8.2 / Creative Suite Premium PhotoShop CS5 extended (patched to 12.04)
Am working on images exported from LightRoom 4 (16bit A3 Pro Photo RGB PSDs) in PhotoShop CS5.
As part of my image grading process I have a PhotoShop Action that does the following: copy layer to new document (document respects all of copied layer settings) > Image > Adjustments > HDR toning > apply a certain HDR preset > copy to resultant image back to original doc > set opacity as 40%.
Totally out of the blue, after having this action for about 2 months, this morning I start getting a warning dialog of "Could not complete the command because of a problem using the Adobe Color Engine" and the action fails. The failure seems to take place at the 'make document' part of the action and seems to somehow be related to the contents of the clipboard.
I've tried trashing and re-creating the action. It works first time out fine and then - on the next image - errors again.
At present I can only safely carry out the work 'manually' by completing all the actions myself.
I can think of no settings that have changed and the OS hasn't been updated in a while.
I have found one other thread on a similar problem in PhotoShop Elements, but no definitive solution.
Any help appreciated as I have a shedload of stuff to process.
    Best wishes
    TP

OK: trash of prefs didn't work. Tried thrice. Re-created orig action. same problem.
    BUT!
Your 'Image > Duplicate' suggestion does seem to work. If I use that in a new action as the method for creating the HDR version doc (instead of 'Select > Copy > New > Paste), it seems to work.
Will try that out this afternoon, but for now: WIN!
    Many thanks for the suggestion!
    TP

  • Using a time capsule to extend a fios router?

I know this topic has been covered many times, but I seem to have trouble finding my answer to my exact questions. I have verizon fios wireless router that they provided with the service. We have a large house with the fios router at one end. At the opposite end, the signal is very weak. I want to use my time capsule to extend the network to the other end of the house. Is this possible without connecting a long ethernet cord and placing the TC at the other end of the house. My ideal situation would be to plug the TC into the wall at opposite end of the house of the Fios router and have it connect to the Fios router and extend the wireless connection...is this possible? If not, can someone please solve my problem?

I just turned the wifi setting of my fios router off and plugged it directly into the time capsule. If I had a large house like yours, I would look at something like this:

how do i use a 2nd airport extreme both are newer models

I assume that you mean that you want to extend the range using wireless only.
This Apple Support Document will tell you exactly how to do that:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4259
The instructions assume that you have AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion , so if you have not already done so, you will need to download and install this application to track the instructions in the support document.
