If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1.3. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

You can update the iOS using wifi, i.e., not connected to your computer.

Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.

Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

I can not update the ipad2, I get the error: A problem occurred when downloading the software for the ipad2. It has been timed outwaiting for network connection
It is just busy. Go have dinner and try again later. Or tomorrow. If you are running windows, turn your firewall off. Sometimes that will cause time out issues. But i think your real problem is simply traffic.

I can't update my ipad2 to ios5. After 2 hours of what looks like a successful download and processing is about to begin, I lose connection and get message network timed out check network settings and connection, but I am still connected via wifi. Any ideas?

I can't update my IPAD2 to IOS6. I've tried through ITUNEs. I get a message after IOS6 is downloaded and extracted, to the effect of "could not backup the IPAD2 because the backup could not be saved to this computer." Ok,I am looking to put MAC OS 10.5.6 on my 12" Al powerbook g4 1.5mhz w/ 1.25gigs of ram. I found a copy of 10.5.6 but the seller says that you can't update it to .8 is this true?

You can't download the individual .msi files, but they can be extracted from the setup.exe files if required.
For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
If you are running 64-bit Windows and the above steps haven't helped try installing the version of iTunes that can be downloaded from this support document. iTunes 12.1 for Windows (64-bit — for older video cards)
