HT1222 Has Apple acknowledged the problems with Security Update 2012-001?

I've read a multitude of user forum comments about this update breaking user software, but have not found a single comment by an Apple representative.

Howdy,
Apparently some are reporting that this causes the older PowerPC (PPC) applications that are supported in 10.6 via 'Rosetta' to crash upon attempting to open/save/print using any dialog box, or fail in other similar ways such as simply not printing or quitting, or freezing/hanging/crashing of the application.
I have read of some companies that have indeed submitted proper bug reports to Apple, but that is not a guarantee of a bug-fix being issued.

If you are unsure if you are still using PowerPC apps, if the application is currently running, look under the 'Activity Monitior' (in Applications -> Utilities), or alternatively you could check in the System Profiler, Applications. Check the column "Type".
Here is a fairly simple way you can restore you system and restore you applications functionality again, if you don't have a recent clone or good Time Machine backup that you can restore from. If you do, restore from your backup prior to having installed the Security Update 2012-001.
Time Machine restore: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
If you are restoring a backup made by a Mac to the same Mac
With your backup drive connected, start up your Mac from the Lion recovery partition (Command-R at startup) or Mac OS X v10.6 installation disc. Then use the "Restore From Time Machine Backup" utility. Select the backup prior to your issues, and it will be restored back to the state it was in at that time.
If you can't easily restore from a backup, you can instead do the following:
- You first start by reinstalling your OS X 10.6.x, this will preserve all your user data, your applications, no worries there.
- Then install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 (links provided below)
- Make sure you're printers are showing up correctly in your system preferences, if not, re-add the printers
- Then finally, run the Apple Software Update (by pulling down the Apple Menu), and install any and all remaining updates, except do not then re-install the Security Update 2012-001. It is possible that you may have to reboot after installing some of the updates, and you may even need to run it a 2nd time to make sure that you've got all updates, except NOT the Security Update 2012-001.

Has Apple acknowledged the problem yet with itunes aborting preview of songs after about 10 seconds on windows 7 and if so is there an answer other than ipconfig?  IPConfig /flushdns doesn't help at all.  Until they fix it I will be previewing and buying my songs thru Amazon.

Doublechecking ... do you still get that if you update to iTunes 10.6.3.25 (just released today)?

Has Apple fixed the problem with 4G cellular connection on the iPad 3?

Cellular connection problem was for US connection in Houston, Texas.  Have an iPad 2 which functions perfectely on Wi-Fi or 3G.  Bought an iPad 3 strictly to get the increased speed from the 4G LTE connection.  Purchased on with the AT &T cellular.  Wi-Fi functions fine, but 4G LTE connection is terrible when it connects at all.  Went to AT&T and they said no problems with service in my area, but never get over 2 bars and most times, Web pages load very slow or will hang and not load at all.  Went to the Apple store and they said it was AT&T network problem and went to AT&T and they said no problems with their service.  Went to the Apple communities forum here and discovered that many people were having the same problems with the 4G LTE cellular connection on their iPad 3's.  Didn't seem to matter if it was AT&T or Verizon.  So I decided that I would just return the unit and wait for Apple to fix the problem.  Hence my question.
Appreciate very much your time in responding to my question.

I have Microsoft Office 2004 on my MacBook (2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo).  It is currently up to date with Microsoft updates.  I am running Mac OS 10.6.8.  I just updated my Mac software with "Security Update 2012-001".  I am now unable to print (Epson NX510 printer) from Excel or Word.  When I click on the Print menu item in Excel, there is a flash in the background like it is trying to open the print window, but nothing else.  I am able to print from other programs like TextEdit, Mail or KakeidaGraph.  As far as I know I have the latest Epson print driver.
Also, I am also unable to open an existing Excel or Word file from the open menu - both programs lock up and do not respond.  I have to force quit.  After I restart Excel or Word I can open an existing file by double clicking on the file, but if I again try to open another file from the open menu, Excel or Word lock up.
    Any similar problems?

  • Rosetta Problems after Security Update 2012-001

My crack team of sys admins and I have devised a method for resolving some of the issues regarding the Security Update 2012-001 and Rosetta.
    http://www.educate-it.org/content.php?130-Rosetta-Issue-after-Security-Update-20 12-001
Click this link for an Installer that will revert the files necessary for some Rosetta apps to run after the Security Update. This is a band-aid and is only recommended in emergency situations. Apple is currently working on a fix, but until that happens, we are stuck with reverse-engineering their update. I hope this helps those in distress from this update.

Backup files off the computer (not TimeMachine) and disconnect.
If you have TM, or a option key bootable clone use that to erase and restore from.
If not, c boot off the 10.6 disk, use Disk Utility to >Repair Disk and Permissions,  (do not format or erase!!) and simply re--install 10.6 from the disk. Note: Does not touch your files and most programs, but backup your files regardless.
Note: If Disk Repair gives a error that is not repaired, then you have to consider erasing the drive (with Zeros) and try reinstalling 10.6 fresh or replacing the drive.
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8, it should not include the security update at this time (second pass it might show) because it was just released and they might need to pull it. (they need to pull it)
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that installed kext files into OS X, you'll know, they won't work.
If you get gray screen, hold the shift key and update your installed software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.

  • Has Apple resolved the problems with the 23" display?

I want to buy a 23" cinema display but the color problem (pinkish hue) seems to still exist. Has Apple still not resolved this problem?
If this is the case, I'll buy the 20" display which I believe does not have any problems. Can someone confirm this?

There has not been any indication from Apple that any chnages have been made in the displays other than price cuts. There were some minor spec changes (which were "un-announced") but nothing about the panels or the many issues that have been discussed here since the introduction of these units.

  • Has apple addressed the problems with iCloud and iCal?

I can see there have been lots of complaints about iCal errors in trying to sync on icloud. I'm not finding any solutions to the issues that are clearly affecting a lot of people. Any one know what's going on?

final cut pro 4.5 and final cut express 3 both seem to have the same dropped frames/capture issue once you upgrade to 10.4.9, something to do with spotlight.

  • Problems after security update 2012-001, 1.1

Two troubling occurrences after this install. Downloading software upgrade from Canon.com, I got Error 404. Reported it; rep said he had one other report like that. He was interested to hear I'd just installed the latest sec. update. He had me try several other urls, both of which gave error 404. He hasn't gotten back to me. Yet.
Second, I applied for the instant credit card from Barclay in order to buy the new iPad. Completed the application and hit submit. The expected "Processing..." mini-window appeared but disappeared within seconds and I was returned to the application screen with no further activity from their side, and no email from them. The site finally timed out.
    Any ideas?

    casey451 wrote:
I will continue to bug Canon.
Even the Apple KB site had a problem of this sort at one time…
It would be surprising if Barclay's, which is directly linked to the Apple site, would be unprepared to receive applications from people using Safari.
I don't know… Nowadays, when it comes to banks, I'm ready to believe anything.
Anyway, check their on-line banking help or support pages, they must state what browsers are supported.
It's perfectly possible that they do support it and the issue is something else -- you may have cookies disabled, or JavaScript turned off, maybe even something related to the update. Again, it's the kind of stuff you should find on their support or help site.

  • I just wanted to chip in with my complaint that I just downloaded the Security Update 2012-001 10.6.8, and now non of my Office 2004 apps work appropriately.  I can open existing word documents, but they won't print) etc. When will apple issue a fix?

While I wait for apple to fix this issue, is there an easier fix to this than using Time Machine to restore to an earlier version?

Apple just issued an "update on the update" that seems to have fixed the problem (Security Update 2012.001 v1.1, see:  http://tidbits.com/article/12768).  All my Word 94 apps now seem to function properly.  Haven't checked everything yet, but the ability to print has been restored.
    Thanks Apple!!!!

  • Today's Security Update 2012-001 is POISON to PowerPC/Rosetta apps  on Snow leopard!

First time I've ever had a routine Security Update cause me problems with OS-X, ever.
Today's Security Update 2012-001   is absolutely crashing my PowerPC/Rosetta apps on Snow Leopard .
Every time to try to OPEN... SAVE or Save as ...PRINT  , you will get an instant hard crash.
I still use AppleWorks 6 for all my business correspondence , and have quite a few other PPC apps.
    This security update is poison.
Other forums, such as Macintouch , are reporting this. it seems to be affecting almost everyone , regardless of hardware system.
It appears enything and everything PPC will crash , even Apple's own older PPC/Rosetta apps .
SU 2012-001 for Snow Leopard obviously was not tested well, if at all.
Apple MUST fix this ASAP, no matter how much they want to divorce Rosetta and PPC technology for the OS. There is no excuse for dispatching a system software update that  has such damaging issues.
I have no need for Lion 10.7 whatsoever , but I do need my Rosetta apps every day... and Apple just crashed them.
