I have a apple Iphone 3g that is telling me that I have software updates that require 2.1 gigabytes, I only have 745MB available and that is after deleting a number of APPS that I had previously installed. What should I do to be able to dowload suggested software.
It appears that you are either going to have to continue delete things are not upgrade.
Have you tried deleting your music?
Music seems to be a heavy user of space.

Just for clarity, do you have iTunes 11.1 now on your computer? If yes, when you connect your iPhone via your USB / Lightning cable is your iTunes opening with a small box near the top right of screen that shows your iPhone connected? If yes then you can click through the various views of your iPhones content areas, such as Music, Photos, etc. You will eventually get to a screen that is Status. On that screen you should see the iOS Update option.

So you could restore to 4.1. You will have to download the 4.1 IPSW from Apple, and then install it with iTunes, Option Click Mac or Shift Click Windoz, on the Restore Button and then select the 4.1 IPSW on your computer. The current iTunes may give meaningless Errors, I doubt because you are Upgrading. But if Error Message is given you will have to search the Web for ways to Exit Recovery.

If you have iPhone 3G, the latest and greatest is IOS 4.2.1.
If you have iPhone 3GS or later, you can only update to IOS 6.0.1.
For iPhone 5 and iPad mini, you can update to IOS 6.0.2. -

I have already gone online and downloaded the 4.1 firmware for iPhone 3G but not sure how to install it. I unzipped the file then tried to do the Shift>Update trick but none of the downloaded files could be selected. Am I doing something wrong?There is no official way to do what you want, that's why the files can't be selected. iOS 4.2.1 is the last officially signed firmware available for your phone. If you want to install any other firmware you'll have to go elsewhere for instructions as such cannot be discussed here, per this forum's terms of use, sorry.
