HT1222 Java in Tiger

What to do about Java security in OS 10.4?

Just java, javascript is okay (I don't know what your games require).  Others have suggested keeping one browser (for example I have both Safari and Firefox) with java activated for sites you trust.
Then too, I have also seen it said (but not proven) that this only affects Intel Macs.  You do say you have a "G5 Intel Mac"  but it's either a G5 or it's Intel, there's no Intel G5.

  • Java 5 Tiger via JNLP available?

    Hi guys,
is Java 5 /Tiger already available via Webstart?
    Cheers

The short answer is no, it isn't even available to Java Update yet (not that this would actually work on my XP SP2 box). It'll be interesting to see how this feature keeps up with the new model of fewer j2se maintenance releases (1.5.1, 1.5.2 etc..) and more updates (1.5.0_01, 1.5.0_02) etc.. ref: http://www.theserverside.com/news/thread.tss?thread_id=29127

  • Reinstall java on tiger

    hello
I have been using a java based project management app called Project Management Desktop by Intellisys. It was a good app and then stopped launching.
Intellisys' tech support's take on it was that my copy of java was bad and that I needed to reinstal java.
Is that possible on a mac? (tiger dual g5)
is there any tests I can do to see if java is still running properly? the only one i found online was one for panther (in terminal typing "java -version" which for me returns "Bus error".
so are there other tests to check if my tiger java works and if it doesn't work can it be reinstalled with out reinstalling my whole system?
    thanks

You can reinstall Java. First you need to remove any Java related .pkg receipts from the /Library/Receipts/ folder. You might also review this article relating to a Java problem in Panther: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301382.
If you have to reinstall the entire Java system, then I believe the only proper method is to do an Archive and Install and reinstall Tiger from scratch. Be sure to boot from your Tiger DVD and run Disk Utilities to repair the hard drive prior to doing the Archive and Install.

  • Java on Tiger

How can I get the current Java build on my company's Macs -- all of which are running Tiger (10.4.11)?
I know enough to be dangerous about modifying systems but I am not a Terminal jockey, so complicated adaptations of open source stuff can be too much for me.

Thanx BD. I was thinking that.
I know Apple wants to keep moving on, and like any computer company they need to sell upgrades to stay profitable, but they have a huge percentage of customers who are in graphics/publications/printing and who have to squeeze ROI out of what I would call "packages" of hardware/software.
You know what I'm talking about -- ya can't upgrade to Adobe CS5 until you commit to all Intel boxes running Leopard, which means you also have to upgrade the $50,000 proprietary ad management, circulation and billing package that won't interface with CS5 or run on Leopard. But if you're going to do that, you should upgrade your server, etc, etc. So you limp along on Tiger, on G5s and G4s, running CS4 and it ain't broken so you probably shouldn't fix it.
It sure would be nice if Apple would consider Java upgrades as important as everything else they include in their periodic security upgrades for Tiger.
    Sigh :>\
    Anyway thanks for the confirmation.

  • HT1222 Java For OS X Lion 2012-001

Somebody answered this "You can simply re-download it and delete the corrupted file image", about the Java update for OS X Lion 2012-001 . My question is how do you do that? How do you delete the corrupt image?

Just drag it to the Trash. Then use Software Update for the latest version.

  • Java.Openconnection FOUND by ClamXav

    Hi,
I have been having trouble with my credit card information being stolen. It was suggested that it might be because my computer is infected with a virus. So I downloaded ClamXav to see if I could find any viruses that might be making my information vulnerable. I scanned my whole hard drive, and apart from a bunch of phishing emails, the only thing that it found was the following.
    /Users/erpilgrim/Library/Caches/Java/cache/javapi/v1.0/jar/ms03011.jar-3847f8dc- 39f62109.zip: Java.Openconnection FOUND
Does anyone know what Java.Openconnection is? Could it cause a problem with the security of my information such as my credit card numbers? What would be the proper way to deal with it? Would it be okay to remove it from the java cache? Or is it needed there?
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Any suggestions about security precautions with Tiger would also be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    erpilgrim

You could remove that file, since it appears to not be a standard one for Java in Tiger 10.4.11.
And I checked into my most active Tiger system, via the path you found yours (in User/ acct)
and did not see any jar file with ms- {though did a search and found the java.Openconnection
item to be a Windows-targeted malware often sent via infected email to other computers.)
While I have no experience in finding or removing malware (have ClamXAV, but it found nothing)
I did see a reference from a few years ago, as well as some newer ones, just by google search
of the name java.Openconnection to see what if anything came up. Reference to a Trojan item
did come up, under varying names; mostly related to Windows and spread by email.
An old virus report from about two years ago, came up; it has more than one named item with
variant java.Openconnection listed, along with other names, etc. +This may not be helpful+ but
usually with ClamXAV, you can find and remove possibly infected files from found locations.
And you could remove that item from the cache, probably. Perhaps someone else with more
experience in using the anti-virus/malware tool ClamXAV (or contact the developer via email
or a form on the site support, if one is available) could be more helpful in the overall situation.
+The following report on the virus that Symantec.com dubbed+ Trojan.ByteVerify

    • re: Hacked Nation: VirusTotal Report: Trojan.ByteVerify:
    http://hackednation.blogspot.com/2008/09/virustotal-report-trojanbyteverify.html
This has been said to only affect computers running a Windows operating system; so in
the case of a dual-boot computer capable of running a Windows partition or with a virtual
system running a layered virtual machine in another system, such malware could be in
a Mac and if that computer runs (or connects, sends, shares) files that can get into a
non-Mac OS X system, that other computer or OS version (windows via BootCamp, etc)
    could be infected.
You can see if any outside connections are attempted by something running in your computer
by getting Little Snitch (licensed shareware with fee) and it will keep track of such effects.
If you have visited web sites posing as authentic other places (fake banks, fake vendors where
you entered a credit card number to buy something; etc) someone other than an intended site
may have gotten that personal information. Also, if you have been using old compromised web
browsers and have not updated or upgraded them, and also updated Adobe Flash & Shockwave
plugins, you'd have to get the newest applicable player plugins and use their Uninstaller to delete
the old installed Flash player and Shockwave player, and quit all browsers, to install replacement
players. Each has their own uninstaller for these Adobe items. They are security risks, btw.
There may also be a DNS hijack situation going on in your computer, too; where it would be
re-directed to fake sites by having substituted the correct web DNS numbers with corrupted
ones, and you may be taken to places where they'd be harvesting your personal data from
their own on-site keystroke and other spyware logger software. This would not have to be
installed into your computer for them to get your information.
    You can change the DNS numbers (and not pay a fee) if those in your Networks settings;
and that may help stop any redirects that way; but there is another way to search for a
common redirect using a free scan feature to find and help remove DNS Changer redirects.

    http://download.cnet.com/OpenDNS/3000-2381_4-169629.html
These kinds of topics have been discussed, so in Apple Discussions, there are referenced
questions and some replies that seemed to work in general topics; not specific to this one
item you noticed in the java folder/files. But that one item is known, per the link above.
The DNS Changer/DNS hijacker (redirect trojan) is another direction to look into; this also
has been spelled out in the Apple Discussions a few times; details about this item read:
+*Trojan DNSChanger* also known as rootrkit TDSS and redirect virus is name of a group of trojans+
    +(zlob dns changer, Troj/Rustok-N, W32/Tidserv. gaopdxserv.sys trojan, UACd.sys trojan, …) that+
+once installed, redirects you to malicious websites and stealing personal identities.+
You should not have to buy anything to find and get rid of this; and the same, when deciding
to use the checked and tested Open DNS alternative numbers in your network settings.

  • How to Totally remove Java

  • Are Tiger system updates still available?

If I install Tiger from a retail disk on my iBook 3G, are the combo updates still available through the software updater?
    thanks

For others such as Quicktime I'd run Software Update to see what the newest version is, but I prefer to do the download myself just so I know it is safe and sound on my computer before doing the update.
If you use Software Update to do Java, keep on running it as it is incremental, not a combination updater.
Don't foget to use Disk Utility to repair permissions before and after updates.

i m working on a cluster related software (not a business software, just a thesis work). i have many servers and clients. but when i compile my code it shows a warning msg
Note: Communicator.java uses unchecked or unsafe operations.
Note: Recompile with -Xlint:unchecked for details.
i m using jdk 1.5. actually neither for the client code nor for the server code this warning is shown, for another java file that uses nio and nio.channel package classes, this msg is shown.
please tell me why the warning is shown.

  • Performance problems with new Java Tiger style recommendations

Performance problems with jdk 1.5 on Linux plattform
(not tested on Windows, might be the same)
    using the new style recommendations.
I need fast Vector loops for high speed mathematical calculations, some
hints about the fastest way to program that loop would be also great!
After refactoring using the new features from java 1.5 (as recommended from
    SUN) I lost performance significantly:
    using a vector:
    public Vector<unit> units;
The new code (recommended from SUN for Java Tiger for redesign):
    for (unit u: units) u.accumulate();
runs more than 30% slower than the old code:
    for (int i = 0; i < units.size(); i++) units.elementAt(i).accumulate();
    I expected the opposite.
Is there any information available that helps?
The following additional information I got from Mr. Shankar Unni:
I got some fairly anomalous results comparing ArrayList and Vector: for the
1.5-style loops, ArrayList was faster then Vector, but for a loop with get()
calls, Vector was faster. Vector was even faster than that using
    elementAt(), which was a surprise:
For a million summing iterations over a 100-element array:
vector elementAt loop took 3446 ms.
vector get loop took 3796 ms.
vector iterator loop took 5469 ms.
arraylist get loop took 4136 ms.
arraylist iterator loop took 4668 ms.

If your topic doesn't change, please stay in your original post.

  • How do I download Java 6 on my Mac OS 10.6.8 Tiger?

I need Java 6 to use my scanner for a website. Java tells me that Apple creates these interfaces for the OS.  Where can I find it to download on the Apple site?

    Hi Mary,
Tiger is 10.4.x, so are you running 10.4.x or 10.6.8/ Snow Leopard?
Locate the version of Java that’s installed on your Mac OS X system.
    1. Open the Utilities folder and run the Terminal application.
    2. Type java -version and press Enter.
(space between java & -v important)
The version of Java that you have installed will then be displayed on the screen.
I think this was the latest Java for 10.6.8...

  • "Tiger" Safari, Java, and etrade.

I was using the etrade "MarketTrader" software, a java application. It worked somewhat OK (occassionally seizing up, etc.) on my old safari (version 1.2 or something like that), I just upgraded to OSX Tiger and safari 2.0.1 and it doesn't work at all. Any ideas?

Undertow - Here's the deal so far (I've only been using them for a week):
MarketTrader is kinda cruddy with Mac. My previous posts detail my problems with various versions of Safari and MT. (FYI Internet Explorer for Mac crashes when I try to load MarketTrader). You can get quotes for the most part but must enter orders via your browser, which takes longer. I upgraded to pro, they apparently just came out with a Mac version at least in the US, I don't know about Canada. It works great.
Keep in mind that I am not a "computer guy". I only have a passing understanding of what Java is, for instance. As far as I'm concerned it's when you have little crap in your browser that you can move around without going to a different page. How is it different than, say, Shockwave? I'll be darned if I know. Perhaps somebody with a deeper understanding of how all this stuff works would be able to make MarketTrader perform better. Also, I never called E*trade tech support. They might have a solution.
Etrade in general has been pretty good so far. Only problem I have really noticed is hold times when you call them. I've heard about problems in getting checks out of them. I have not tried to do this yet becuase I have only lost money with them
    Good luck.

  • Garbled Text/Odd font in Safari since updating to Tiger.  Java related?

I seem to be having a problem with Safari since I updated to Tiger.
I'm running Safari 2.0.3, and have been encountering problems with garbled text in a strange font when Safari loads certain pages. The text often overlaps making it impossible to read.
A friend thinks it might be Java related. I've tried clearing the cache and resetting Java, but it hasn't helped.
    Here's a screenshot example: http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/tashamay/Picture2.jpg
On the Petfinder.com page specifically, if I go directly to their home site everything is fine, but once I try and search the results come up all messed up.
I also have a problem with it when I try andl log into gmail. "Loading" comes up on the screen in the garbled text font as if it's trying to load an applet, but nothing happens. I eventually get the spinning rainbow of death and have to force quit.
    Any ideas?

    Hello tashamay:
I am not an expert in font issues, but you may have corrupt fonts. Open "font book.' Select all and run resolve duplicates. Then select all and run validate fonts. I also have read that Helvetica fractional fonts have caused some rendering problems.
I would also clear the Safari cache again.
