HT1222 My iPhone 4 will not update to the newest version available. Any suggestions?

I have tried to update my iPhone 4 to with the latest software 5.1.1 and it gives me an error message and says its unable to update. Any suggestions on why or what I need to do to get the update to work?

It will also help if you'll tell us whether you're trying to update through your computer, and if so the OS and version of iTunes it's running, or if you're trying to update directly on your iPhone.

The screen with an iTunes logo and cord indicates the device is in recovery mode, and will need to be restored by using iTunes. Take a look at the articles below for more information.

As said in the question, my ipod touch will not connect to the newest version of itunes. When I plug it in, my compter recognizes that a device has been connected, yet it will not show up in itunes. I didn't have this problem until I just updated to the new itunes. Someone help please!

I plug my phone into my computer and checked it for updates and there was one available for the latest iPhone Software. It will begin downloading and take about 15-20 minutes to complete the downloading but once it gets to the end where it begins to install, it says there is a connection error. I know there isn't a connection error and my computer is clearly connected to the internet so I don't know what to do. I have tried this three or four times and get the same problems each time. The only thing I know to do is to go out and buy a different phone and get rid of my iPhone....Help please since I happen to be the typical broke college student and buying a phone outright isn't the best option right now.

This is a common error. A search of google or the forums would have revealed the answer in less time than it took to register and post.
Temporarily disable any Anti-Virus or Firewall software on the computer, run the update, then re-enable the software.

Are you doing this over a wireless network. This happened a long time ago when we had DSL. I got sick of it and went to broadband thru our cable company.
If you are using wireles router, use a cable and connect your computer via the cable to the modem or wireless router if you have a location for the cable upon the wireless router. I think it is a cat 5 cable that connects the computer to your modem or wireless router. This way you Internet should not time out.
I hope this helps you. It is hard to identify the issue not knowing your Internet connect setup. Some modems and wireless routers have more Port options.

Sounds like your iPhone was hacked/modified/jailbroken to work
with wireless carrier other than the one it was purchased from. The
update has relocked it to the original carrier. Contact the original
carrier to see if they offer unlocking and if you qualify - only the
carrier to which the iPhone is locked can unlock it.
What does it say when you look at Settings=>General=>Carrier?
Be advised that the previous modifications to change from original carrier
to your local Carrier may have rendered the software unable to be updated or
officially unlocked.

It sounds like you are wanting to update the Apps that were synced over from your computer to your new iPhone 5s. If you are clicking Updates in the App Store in the bottom right corner, would you mind clarifying what happens when you are trying to update them?

I deleted enough pics and apps so there is enough storage. When i plug it in, it starts to bring all my photos to the imac. I cancel this because i don't want it. It then says extracting software, backing up iphone, then i get the error message. Do I need the iphone 5?

I just tried again, no code comes up on the imac. Just says cannot back up this device with my "initials" because of an error. It's weird because my iphone has been connected to othert wifi sources in the past. I've looked through these forums and have tried multiple things like resetting the phone, resetting network, shutting off modem and router, nothing works. I have an apple airport extreme router too. I already have the most current version of iTunes installed so I have no clue why I am getting an error that has anything to do with itunes. You may have to do a full restore to upgrade:
Placing your device into recovery (DFU-Device Firmware Upgrade) mode:
Follow these steps to place your iOS device into recovery mode. If your iOS device is already in recovery mode, you can proceed immediately to step 6.
   1. Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the
       other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
   2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds
       until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
              * If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the
                Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off,
                release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the
       device. The device should turn on. Note: If you see the battery charge warning,
       let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some
