HT1222 Security 2012 update has crashed my Mac Office 2004.

And who knows what else.... I tried "repair permissions".  That hasn't worked.  My time capsule was off (fairly new mac user and still learning about it!).
Is there a way to time capsule back even if it was off?
How can I fix this?  Buy new office software?  Purchase mac repair plan?
How long does it take for them to fix this kind of thing?!?!  Nightmare.

Security Update 2012-001 Bricks Rosetta programs
Restore method.
#1 Backup your personal data off the machine.
Backup files off the computer (not TimeMachine). If you don't have a external drive, get one and connect to the USB/Firewire port and simply drag and drop copy your User folder to the external drive, it will copy all your files. That's all you need to do at this time, disconnect all drives now to prevent mistakes.
#2 Try Restoring from a TimeMachine or option bootable clone
If you have TimeMachine drive, or a hold the option key bootable clone use that to erase and restore from.
Note: A TM restore can take a awfully long time, a clone restore takes under 2 hours in most cases.
#3 Reinstall OS X 10.6 from disk
If no TM or bootable clone then:
Get out your 10.6 install disk and make sure it's clean and polished (very soft cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol, no scratches) If your disk is borked, you'll have to order a new one from Apple with your serial number.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk (wired keyboard, internal optical drive), use Disk Utility to >Repair Disk and Permissions  (do not format or erase!!), Quit DU and simply re-install 10.6.
Note: If Disk Repair gives a error that is not repaired, then you have to consider erasing the drive (with Zeros) and try reinstalling 10.6 fresh or replacing the drive.
Note: Simply reinstalling 10.6 version from disk (without erasing the drive) only replaces 10.6.8 with 10.6.x and bundled Apple programs, won't touch your files (backup anyway)  or most programs, unless they installed a kext file into OS X itself. (only a few on average do this)
#4 Update to 10.6.8 without Security Update 2012-001
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8 via Software Update, but EXCLUDE THE Security Update 2012-001 by checkinig the details and unchecking the blue check box.
#5 Reinstall any non-working third party programs
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that require kext files installed into OS X, you'll know, they won't work when you launch them or hang for some reason.
If you get gray screen at any time when booting (possible it might occur when you reinstall old programs), hold the shift key down while booting (Safe Mode, disables kext files) and update your installed third party software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.

#9 Unverified hacks
Note: You may see a "hack" for this issue floating around, it has had mixed results as people's software is different.
You may want to try it, but it's at your own risk. It has worked fast for some and not at all for others, hopefully over time it will work for all.
The above methods I outline are Apple approved restore methods + based upon experience here and not a quick fix, but are sure to work as Apple recommends such steps themselves.
https://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
If at any time you feel this is beyond your capability, please seek local professional assistance before you lose your data.
If you don't have any backup, please maintain at least a TM drive, just hook up a new blank external drive and TM will ask you to make a backup, takes some time so let it work.
If your a bit more skilled, a option bootable clone is much superior than TM drive.
Good luck

yes wen i try booting in Safe Mode it behave the same. i have downloaded the combo update of 10.7.5 from another laptop, so how do i run it on my mac. THANKS for helping
The goal is to mount the combo update .dmg on the desktop and then open and run it. If you can't get to the desktop to begin with, that won't work. Another approach is to treat the Mac's hard disk as just another HD by using a second Mac and then connecting the problematic one via Target Disk Mode. See http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1661. Note that both Macs will need Firewire ports and you'll need a FIrewire cable to connect them. With the combo updater, one of the steps in the process is to select the drive you want to install the update on. Once you're successfully connected in Target Disk Mode, the problematic drive should appear in the list.
If that doesn't work or Target Disk Mode isn't possible, the only other solution is to boot into Recovery Mode; see http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4718. Note that once booted into recovery mode, you have access to Disk Utility, and you should try running Repair Disk after selecting the bad drive to see if something's wrong with the directory which could be fixed. When you select that drive, you should also look at S.M.A.R.T. Status at the bottom of the window. It should say "Verified." If it says Failing or Failed, the HD needs to be replaced.
If the HD is OK, all that's left that I can think of is to reinstall Lion using Recovery Mode. I hope you've maintained current backups or at least complete Time Machine backups. Of course, if you have a backup and the backup is bootable, you could boot from that, wipe the internal HD clean, and clone the backup onto the internal HD.

  • Why is Mac Office:2004/2008 acting strange?

After I upgrade to Lion 10.7.3 over a month or so, I experience problems with some of my documents in Word or Excel.  The Excel opens to READ only and I am the only pperson that has the priviledge for it.  Also when I go to leave a cell, the curson locks on the cell and grabs everthing in the path I move my mouse.  I try to click it loose and nothing happens.  After a while I do get back control of the document, but again it begins to behave strangely.
In my Word documents, I would be typing and all of a sudden the curson is some other place on the page inserting my input in the wrong place.
I have spent hours on the phone with the tech support people with Microsoft and Apple, but no one seems to be able to have my errant software work properly. In my furstration I purchased the 2011 version of Mac Office.  I stll have the same problems after installing it.
I just realized also that when I did an upgrade of the MS Mac Office:2004 to 2007, I continued to save my documents in the 2008 version, but selected the 2004 format to save them.  I understand that 2004 will not even open in the Lion OS X.  So I am beginning to think I may have created an anomoly by intergrating the two versions while in the Lion OS X version.  Does anyone have any nsight to this?
Also as part of my frustration with this software proble, I am not able to restart or shut down my Mac Mini from the drop down menu.  The wheel just spins and spins for minutes and minutes, so I finally do a power shut down.  The restart it by pressing the power button again to turn it on.  Any clue to fix this problem.
My Mac Mini is a 2009 vintage.  I am not an extremely knowledgable computer person.  I need help.  Thanks!

I have contacted them many many times.  For two days I waited on the phone for over 1 1/2 hours.  All total I have been on the phone with them over 6 hours and they are not able to find any problems with what I am experiencing.  Thus I fell there is something with the Lion OS X that is the main source of this glitch.  Thanks for your input.

  • Converting from ie and using mac office 2004

We just upgraded to Mac office 2004 and are trying to figure out how we can insert url's into entourage messages. In the past, we used the Insert command which provided a list from IE's favorites...now that seems to be either impossible or hard to find.
Does anyone have any ideas??? It would seem that with all the interoperability objectives and MSFT's advance notice of discontinuing IE .... there should be something out there somewhere....
    IMac ppc4 800mhz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

That is possible...but the mac office used to have a function that allowed one to (using the insert command) insert a url link stored in IE as a favorite.
Opening two programs, as you suggest, is somewhat of a step backward and requires the user to open their browser (if not open), find the url in the bookmarks, copy it and then paste it in the email/document.
If you have any ideas - I'd be interested in hearing about them.

  • I received an email containing a spreadsheet created using Mac Office 2004 on my new MacBook Air equipped with Mac Office 2011.  When I saved the document, my Finder lists the document without the .xls file extension. Why?

I received an email containing a spreadsheet created using Mac Office 2004 on my new MacBook Air equipped with Mac Office 2011.  When I saved the document, my Finder lists the document without the .xls file extension. Why?
All other .xls documents created by Mac Office 2004 retained the .xls file extention when I migrated them over to the new MacBook Air.

I know what happened.  When I saved the document I somehow hit the Hide File Extension box.  Sorry to trouble this group. I simply resaved it w/o activating the Hide File Extension feature.

  • Printing/crashing issues with Office 2004 after 10.5.3 upgrade.

I have an iMac on 10.5.3 and whenever I try to print Word, Excel, or PPT, the apps crash. Just recently the apps are crashing just when I attempt to open up a document. I thought it was the fact that I use Carbon Copy Cloner and have a clone of these apps on an external HD. CCC says vehemently "it can't be"... What to do? Is the 10.5.3 upgrade the issue, is the clone? I have done Disk Utility permissions repair many times. I also tried to download the Office 2004 updates, but they are not taking effect.

Thanks John It waivers from crashing upon launch, to crashing upon print. I have unplugged my ext. HD and restarted, but it still crashes:

  • Mac Office 2004

I have run Mac Office fine for several months now. Then the other day when I tried to open Word I got this error:
    Application Launch Failure
The application Word couldn't be launched because of a shared library error
    "< Microsoft Word > <Microsoft Word > <Carbon Lib> "
This is happening to all the applications in Office.
    Any help much appreciated!

okey, u want me 2 prove it?
go onto spotlight and search for carbon lib and open the file which is related to office.
can you tell me what exactly that is, is it a log or is it a 'shared library file'?
I'm just asking a question. I know the difference between a log file and a shared library. What the Finder reports as a "log" or "shared library" is irrelevant for system files. Those files aren't meant to be looked at by users and could be labeled "log file", "shell file", "executable file", or just about anything else.
This is not a new problem. The standard fix is to "reinstall the OS".

Still, I think the original poster should try to reboot, repair permissions, and repair the disk in disk utility before trying anything drastic. If that doesn't work, then by all means try to uninstall and reinstall Office. A 3rd party software install or an Apple software update (while running Word) could have scrambled the OS and require a re-install of the OS.

  • Update OS to Leopard, keep Office 2004?

Hi! I haven't posted before, so I apologize if I break any protocol.
I'm wondering if there's a way in which I can update my OS to Leopard, but retain Office 2004.
A member of my family bought a Leopard disk that they can share with a set number of friends/family, and she has been kind enough to share with me. I have a large, external hard drive, if that helps. I just don't want to have to pay for a new version of Office. I'm not even sure Office 2004 is compatible with Leopard, but I'm very happy with Office 2004. A girlfriend mentioned that I may be able to retain Office using a disk image, but I'm open to any ideas.
    Please help! Thank you!!  -ellie

Lately, I've wanted to download several programs which required a newer operating system than the one I'm currently using. And I have the chance to get it now for free. Thanks for your reply

  • 10.4.11 update has broken my mac mini core duo

I got a rather odd error near the end of my update to .11, and went ahead and downloaded the standalone installer. I ran it, and it appeared to work properly. I later rebooted to complete, and the machine never restarted.
I did a 'press power to shut off' followed by power to start.
    * stuck at gray apple screen with spinning progress wheel.
I forced off again and reset PRAM (cmdopt+PR).
    * chimed, restarted, stuck at gray apple with spinning progress wheel.
Attempted safe start (shift after chime till spinning wheel)
    * stuck at gray apple with spinning progress wheel.
    Attempted single user (cmd+S)
    * stops at:
"CSRHIDTransitionDriver::probe booting in single user .. do not match"
    Attempted verbose (cmd+v)
    * stops at:
    "IOBluetoothHCIController::start Idle Timer Stopped"
    Attempted open firmware (cmdopt+of):
    * stuck at gray apple with spinning progress wheel.
I've attempted to use the OSX Tiger DVD pressing C at start:
    * disk audibly whirs, but never progresses beyond gray apple with spinning progress wheel.
Same for restart pressing D with disk in.
I do not have access to another mac, and do not have any way to install OSX onto an external drive to try to boot my mac.
Edit to add: Filevault is enabled, did not run "repair permissions"
(have to comment: if its so important, why does the installer not force it to happen?)
Do I have any other options to try or do I own a $500 paperweight?
    edits to add additional info

I am on my way to a possible cure. I located in the attic the original (still in their sealed box) Official Mac Mini Install Disks after calling Apple SuUpport. (I had been trying to resurrect using an OSX Tiger Black box install dvd set). The machine just would not boot from that black Tiger OSX DVD...However:
The mac support rep (Dan - great job) had me use that original disk, and said: hold the C key - from the chime all the way until a dialog box came up to do an archive and install. It took a good 4 or 5 minutes of holding.
But - the end result was that I am now doing a complete archive and install, so I get to keep everything (many gigs of music) and reinstall third party stuff. Suitable punishment I suppose for being a Mac snob and not backing up for eons compared to backing my PC up with an automated process weekly.
For others: Dan said that the install must have encountered a glitch and was left in an incomplete state with some critical bit of software malformed. He could not explain that it would not boot to open firmware, or what the glitch might have been.
I will post again once i have a working system and once again attempt to get current in version and security updates...after a complete backup to a nice new external drive
    Oh well, live and learn.

  • Latest CC 2014 update hard-crashes my Mac!

    OS 10.7.5
IMac 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4GB Memory
    over 100GB free disk space
Is there a way to undo the last update so I can get my Art Dept. up and running again? Should I stop paying for this subscription an go back to CS6? Please tell me I don't have to buy 8 new Macs to support the software.

Glad to know I'm not alone, Yonkondy. One thing I just tried that seems to be helping performance a lot is to hold down the Shift+Option keys while the project is loading up. This clears the preferences. It won't look like anything happens initially (there's no dialogue box or anything to tell you that the preferences have been cleared), but I was finally able to save my project without it crashing! Baby steps I guess, haha.

  • FCP 7 update has slowed my Mac Book Pro

    Hi all
First post here. I've just upgraded to FCP 7/ Studio 3 on my MBP running Leopard 10.5.8
When I open FCP it takes an age to load, and it is impossible to use the software, it's like running high end software on a low end PC, sluggish isn't the word!
I have 2 gigs of ram, FCP 6 worked fine. Has anyone else suffered from this or have any advice??
    Thanks

I purchased the upgrade and simply ran It and installed it - FCS2 was already installed, but being an upgrade I assume this is right?
I did this on my mac pro with no problems, studio 3 runs fine. On the laptop it is un-useable

  • Latest Update has effected my Microsoft Office?!

I have recently installed the latest updates for Lion and since then my Microsoft Office Home & Business 2011 no longer loads?!?!? Has anyone else had this issue?
I have tried reinstalling and still no joy.... What do I do as I need my files for work?
    HELP

Mine works fine. In the Finder menu, select Go>, Go to Folder, and paste this:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.office.plist
    Quit Microsoft applications.
Move the com.microsoft.office.plist to the trash. Try opening and see if it works.
