HT1222 Security Update 2013-001 (Lion) may have disabled the DVI on my 17" MacBook Pro

It looks like Security Update 2013-001 (Lion) may have disabled the DVI on my 17" MacBook Pro ... 2006 vintage ... it worked fine before the upgrade.  Tested port with HD monitor using an HDMI adapter that worked before. Thanks for the help!

Thank you for the suggestion ... I repaired the disk ... repaired the permissions ... from the CMD+r restore partition ...
No changes.
I'm in the process of doing a Software Update scan ...
Thanks for the suggestion ... hope there might be more ...
I know these are supposedly never monitored by Apple ... but I can always hope!

  • No Dock no app switching after security update 2013-001

Been running 10.6.8 very stably for a long time.  Yesterday SW update found Security Update 2013-001.  The first download didn't succeed, second download went and installed okay, without issue.
On restart (and multiple restarts since), the desktop pattern has reverted to the default space-theme, the Dock is gone, Cmd-Tab won't show or switch among apps, Spaces and Expose are gone, and System Prefs won't fix these.  I can select a desktop pattern, but it doesn't change, can enable Spaces, but it doesn't 'stick', etc.
I repaired permissions (a few from an HP printer update a month ago0, and the HD verified without issue.  No change.
What is the best course of action?  Re-install 10.6.8 updater?   Then what??
    -Paul

Update.. here are the things I've done, with no change.   I really don't understand #2; since the cloned drive was well before these issues, yet all symptoms remain, suggests it's a HW/FW setting somewhere.  Then I hoped zapping PRAM would straighten it out.  No luck.  What gives?
    1)     Ran 10.6.8 combo updater; no change.
    2)     Booted from a drive cloned a week ago, before Security Update: behavior unchanged
    3)     Reset PRAM -  no change.

  • Security update 2013-001 broke my keyboard

I installed security update 2013-001 (version 1.0) today, and after the reboot, my iMac doesn't recognize my keyboard any more. Neighter the USB hub functionality is working (my trackball needed to be plugged into another USB port directly to the iMac to be recognized.
    Hardware: iMac12,2
    OS: 10.6.8 snow leopard
Keyboard model no. A1243 (apple full size USB keyboard)
I tried different USB ports, and also rebooted, but it still doesn't work.
I borrowed my colleague's A1242 keyboard (apple small size USB keyboard) which works fine.
All I did was install the software update. The previous update was Java Update 14.
Does anybody know what's going on? :'(

For anyone who has a USB (third party) keyboard: after the security update, the iMac will only recognize it if you follow the screen instructions - press the key to the right of the left Shift key once; after that, the key to the left of the right Shift key (that is the default procedure for Mac OS to recognize plug in keyboards).
So, it doesn't "break" the keyboard, it just needs to be able to recognize it since the firmware settings were most likely reset to factory default. Not sure if this also applies to a wired Apple keyboard, but it definitely applies to third party keyboards, especially if they are plugged in in addition to an Apple bluetooth keyboard, which is the case with my setup.

after a restart it works for a time, but always slow. I went to the Applestore this afternoon and the made a check and said it would be the logicboard and they would have to change it for CHF 600 and it would be ready in 10 - 15 days

  • Security update 2013-001 broke remote printing

I installed the 2013-001 update on a MacPro (10.6.8) and printing through a shared printer on another Mac (iMac 20, 10.6.8) is no longer possible. The print job is stopped at the client's print queue with a "On Hold ((Authentication required)" status. I have gone through the usual exorcisms (delete printers and install them again through "Print & Fax" of "System Preferences") in both the client and the "server." I have also installed the update in the "server" and the client's behavior has not been affected.
There is no way of entering username and password because CUPS' printer.conf has "AuthInfoRequired none" for this printer. Editing printer.conf (of course, after stopping cups via "sudo launchctl stop org.cups.cupsd") to have "AuthInfoRequired username, password" allows the window to pop only once, will not inform the user if the inputs are incorrect, and will revert back to "AuthInfoRequired none" after that one-time use. (Why? Because the printer is being shared by another machine?). BTW, installing the printer through CUPS html interface ("http://localhost:631") does not change this behavior.
Local printing on the "server" is not affected by the update. Two other Macs (both on 10.6.8) that have not had the update applied have no problems printing through the "server" even though the "server" was updated. This strongly suggests that the update caused enough changes in the network security to break shared printing as we know it.
Anybody else seeing this out there in the wild? If so, any workarounds? Or do we wait for Apple's engineers to hear about it and fix it? Other than reverting to an earlier version of the OS through TImeMachine, I am out of ideas and the possible solutions appear to be above my pay grade. (BTW, is there an official way of deinstalling an update like this one?)
Thank you for reading this far and, hopefully, you can contribute a solution.

If Disk Utility is unable to complete the repair,
Is just one reason to 3rd party utilities which are stronger than Apple's.  When it comes to directory damage, DiskWarrior is the way to go.  No need to use if Disk Utility found "no" errors.  Overkill does not come into play.
If I wanted to load third-party drivers to solve this type of problems, I'd be running another OS.
Unless your printer was made specifically by Apple, all printer drivers are third party.  Apple gets them directly from the printer manufacturer.  As a courtesy, Apple supplies them through Software Update.

  • HT1222 security update 2014-001 1.0 will not load. Not even in safe mode. Says to contact manufacturer?

I have downloaded the latest Security Update from the Apps store, TWICe and neither time has it taken when installing. I then kept clicking and found a version specific to Mountain Lion, which I downloaded. That didn;t take on installation either, not even in Safe Mode. I have a VERY small amount of GB's per month (10 GB) and am increasingly frustrated with having tod ownload stuff that doesn't seem to work. AND the #1 hovering on the App symbol in the dock drives me nuts. Especially after downloading the same update now THREE TIMES?! Can anyon e help me to understand what's going on, or indeed how to make this thing work?

    Same here.
    Using AppStore twice: "unknown error"
I thought it might be because the AppStore installation didn't have access to my system keychain for administrator privileges, so I downloading manually, opened the DMG and ran the installer. I got the prompt for my password and the installer went almost to the end, including the "optimizing" step, but still same result:
    The installation failed
The Installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance.
    MacBook Pro 15"
    OS X 10.8.5
    2.2 GHz Intel Core i7
    8 GB 1333MHz DDR3
So how does one contact the manufacturer?
Since upgrading to Mountain Lion, I have noticed many more application crashes (on launch, on quit or at random times), spinning beachballs and use of the Force Quit hotkeys. Maybe Apple should pay more attention to its computer business instead of playing in the fashion biz.

  • HT1222 Security Update 2012-001 crashed my macbook pro with 10.6.8. What do I do?

I did the automatic update last night, and now my Macbook Pro gets stuck at the white screen with the apple and soinning wheel!!!  What do I do??? HELP!!!

See if a Safe Boot fixes this. Start up holding the shift key down at the chime. Give it much longer than a usual bootup. Leave it alone in Safe Boot for a few minutes, then reboot, but don't open any apps there for a few minutes.

Hey I think I accidentally deleted the Macintosh HD off my MacBook Pro. I am using snow leopard. I tried to do a factory reset and installed OS X back onto my mac but Macintosh HD is still not there. Is there a way I can get it back?

  • Snow Leopard 10.6.2 Security Update 2010-001

I had a MacBook Pro 15" 2006 , core duo 2GHz 100GB with Snow Leopard working fine, until I a) repaired permissions, b) installed single item "Security Update 2010-001" via Software Update c) restarted when I was told "you need to restart to finish this upgrade", restart later I chose to restart now. The MBP1,1 has blocked at a flashing Apple/'No-Entry/'? folder' grey/gray screen.
I have read http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1892?viewlocale=en_US , I have tried advanced repair techniques, PRAM, safeboot, X etc to as yet no avail.
I urge caution before applying this update on mission critical systems, I have read widely and many people have had no problems with Security Update 2010-001, but some have. I am an experienced Apple user - this is an anomaly, hopefully very rare. any other suggestions rather than total system restore?

    .... BUT NO ...
I'm still having the problem, but it's getting better and I'm not blaming the Security Update any longer.
I've been rebooting into Safe Mode (Shift while Switch-on) and investigating Library/Startup Items and User Login Items.
I don't know whether it's 10.6.2 or the Security Update, but one of them seems to have made the machine sensitive to the fact (my fault) that I had various old and presumably not-compatible items in Startup. Also, some of the software/drivers/plugins you find in Preferences (eg my Mouse driver, my pen tablet driver) seemed to be outdated. I've now given my collection of old software a bit of a spring clean, and 2 times out of 3 I can now reboot successfully.
... failing which, reboot in Safe Mode and try again.

  • I loaded security update 2015-001; now images don't load

    Mavericks 10.9.5
    13-inch, Mid 2012 MacBook Pro
    Google Chrome 40.0.2214.94 (64-bit)
    and Apple Mail Version 7.3
After loading the 2015-001 security update, websites will randomly not load (sometimes the Reload button works, and sometimes not). Same with images in email and on websites.
I've tried reloading the update, restarting the computer, and resetting my cable modem and wireless modem. I've tried Renew DHCP lease, and I've tried switching from wireless to an ethernet connection. This update has made my internet and email nearly unusable. I need suggestions of what else I can try to get this working again.

I have Microsoft Office 2004 on my MacBook (2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo).  It is currently up to date with Microsoft updates.  I am running Mac OS 10.6.8.  I just updated my Mac software with "Security Update 2012-001".  I am now unable to print (Epson NX510 printer) from Excel or Word.  When I click on the Print menu item in Excel, there is a flash in the background like it is trying to open the print window, but nothing else.  I am able to print from other programs like TextEdit, Mail or KakeidaGraph.  As far as I know I have the latest Epson print driver.
Also, I am also unable to open an existing Excel or Word file from the open menu - both programs lock up and do not respond.  I have to force quit.  After I restart Excel or Word I can open an existing file by double clicking on the file, but if I again try to open another file from the open menu, Excel or Word lock up.
    Any similar problems?

    Howdy,
Apparently some are reporting that this causes the older PowerPC (PPC) applications that are supported in 10.6 via 'Rosetta' to crash upon attempting to open/save/print using any dialog box, or fail in other similar ways such as simply not printing or quitting, or freezing/hanging/crashing of the application.
I have read of some companies that have indeed submitted proper bug reports to Apple, but that is not a guarantee of a bug-fix being issued.
    You might wish to read:
    http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/snowleopard/index.html#d02feb2012
If you are unsure if you are still using PowerPC apps, if the application is currently running, look under the 'Activity Monitior' (in Applications -> Utilities), or alternatively you could check in the System Profiler, Applications. Check the column "Type".
Here is a fairly simple way you can restore you system and restore you applications functionality again, if you don't have a recent clone or good Time Machine backup that you can restore from. If you do, restore from your backup prior to having installed the Security Update 2012-001.
    Time Machine restore: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
If you are restoring a backup made by a Mac to the same Mac
With your backup drive connected, start up your Mac from the Lion recovery partition (Command-R at startup) or Mac OS X v10.6 installation disc. Then use the "Restore From Time Machine Backup" utility. Select the backup prior to your issues, and it will be restored back to the state it was in at that time.
If you can't easily restore from a backup, you can instead do the following:
    - You first start by reinstalling your OS X 10.6.x, this will preserve all your user data, your applications, no worries there.
    - Then install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 (links provided below)
    - Make sure you're printers are showing up correctly in your system preferences, if not, re-add the printers
    - Then finally, run the Apple Software Update (by pulling down the Apple Menu), and install any and all remaining updates, except do not then re-install the Security Update 2012-001. It is possible that you may have to reboot after installing some of the updates, and you may even need to run it a 2nd time to make sure that you've got all updates, except NOT the Security Update 2012-001.
