you can not really - you can sync lower quality versions to your iPad - you need an external hard drive and run Time Machine
You can move copies to the iPad using PhotoStream - but that is not really a backup

Wow, sorry to hear of your experience. Seems strange that your disk would just eject like they did. It could be a lot of things but more than likely you just kind of have to start all over.
What I would do is insert your system disk and instead of going immediately to an install I would go to disk utility and erase the drive. That will erase everything on the disk and give you a new blank disk to start with. After that I would try to reinstall the system. Assuming that goes well then you should be restored to where it was when you purchased it. After that you can reinstall all your applications or personal files. I hope you have good backups.
I remember one time I was having a similar problem and don't ask my why I did it but I actually could not get it to install a system. I removed both of my ram sticks, shut the computer down for about 10 minutes including unplugging it from the wall plug, then reinstalled the ram, plugged it back in and started up from the system disk and all worked just fine. To this day I have no idea if pulling the ram helped but I have never had to do it since and for some dumb reason that solved the problem I was having, which is the same problem you are having now. Call it voodoo but it worked.

If I have streamed my photos from my iPhone 5 to my iPad, through icloud, can I now delete them from my phone or will this cause them to be deleted from my iPad also. I need to do an update and free some space

I have icloud. I have backed up my photos from my iPhone 5 to my iPad. Can I now delete the photos from my phone and they will stay on my iPad? I need to clear space in order to run an update.

I get the following warning message when deleting a shared Phoyo Stream:
"Name of Stream" will be deleted from all of your devices and the devices of subscribers."
It pops up because that is what will happen. It does not mean photos stored locally in iPhoto on your Mac will be deleted.
If iPhoto is set to automatically import photos in your Photo Stream and store locally on Mac, you are covered with photos copied to "My Photo Steam". I don't believe that includes the photos in a shared photo stream you create or that you accept which was created by someone else. I can add photos to a shared stream from photos on my iPhone that were transferred from my computer. If those were saved by iPhoto on my Mac as well which are already in iPhoto on my Mac, I would not want that.

Exactly what did you do?
The correct steps are
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
My guess is that that you have not switched iphoto to use the external drive yet - opttion launch and select libary

The iphone is not a storage/backup device. The picture sycn is one way - computer to iphone. The photos are also reduced in size when synced to iphone so they are not of the original quality
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup of your computer.
Have you failed to do this?
If so, not good at all, you can e-mail the pics to yourself - keep in mind they will never be of the original quality

You can't do it directly on the iPad - the new album functionality basically only allows you to copy photos into those new albums, you can't move them. The way that I think of it as working is that you are just creating pointers to the photos in those new albums, so if you then delete the original photo on the iPad you therefore automatically delete all the pointers to it.
If you want to re-organise your albums then you will need to do it on your computer and then sync those albums over to the iPad

But when I attempted to COPY my photos to it in order to free up space on my HD, I made a mistake. When I dragged the iPhoto (11) Library to My Book and re-named it to "iPhoto Library.old" nothing happened. So I dragged it again, re-named it again (same name--that was the mistake, I guess!) and then it took about an hour+ to do its thing. When finished and I launched iPhoto by holding down the Option key, the dialog window listed two libraries: "iPhoto Library.old" and iPhoto Library.old (default)". So now what? It seems that I still have the originals when I open iPhoto, and do I have two copies, also? Should I delete one of them and if so, which one and how? Or should I eliminate both of them and start over again? And if so, how do I do that? Right now, neither my HD nor the My Book have changed the number of GB available or free since before I began this process. Will the numbers only change after I actually delete my original Library AND empty the Trash? I appreciate any light you can throw on this subject for me. Oh my! Obviously, I don't know what I'm doing. But I do know that my goal was to do both---backup AND free some space. My iMAc is old (2006) and I upgraded it a year or so ago to Snow Leopard. Thank you so much for beng so prompt with your reply and patient with mine. I tried for so long to see the dialog box with the library listings. When I launched iPhoto, even with holding down the Option key, it kept immediately launching into the full screen. Finally, after an hour of doing it over and over again, it worked when I held the key down for 5 minutes. Then when I was typing my reply, I kept getting a message to "Request Time Out." Didn't know how to do that, so kept hitting the OK button and kept typing for another half minute. Finally, when ready to send, Safari couldn't do it. "Try again" exasperated me until I realized I would have to begin again and use Firefox. When I got there and ready to type, I got the message that my message had been retrienved and did I want to use it?!!

Connect your devices to the computer with the USB cable (one device at a time) and import the photos via iPhoto or Image Capture.
If you have not changed any default settings on your computer, iPhoto will automatically launch when you plug in the device. Then follow the import prompts.

I recently got my iPhone 5 replaced. Before erasing the contents on my old iPhone 5 I backed up to iCloud. When I restored all my photos from my old phone are missing. How do I recover?

Many users have lost photos while preforming a restore from backup or upgrading the iOS. Recall, only photos in the camera roll are backed up to iCloud. There is a way to turn backups for camera roll on/off, perhaps these users had camera roll turned off.

Settings>icloud>Storage & Backups>Manage Storage, tap the device's name and on the next screen, be sure Camera Roll is turned on.
IMPORTANT...
Photos should be regularly synced to a computer (like you store photos from a digital camera) using either USB via iTunes (on a mac use iPhoto or Aperture to move them to an album) or using photo stream - and then moved into permanent albums for storage. If using Photo stream, but sure to move the received photos to a permanent album. If you have been doing that, then you can sync those photos back to your device.
If you haven't been saving photos except relying on iCloud to store them in a backup, then that is risky, as many users have discovered. I'm afraid I have no advice in this case - there is no "cure".

You need to find your iPhoto Library and copy this package to your other computer.
By default the library will be called iPhoto Libary.photolibrary and located in your Pictures folder. YOu will recognize it by the typical "fan of pictures" icon. The color of the icon wil depend on the iPhoto version. What is your version of iPhoto?
