HT1237 Can I update my system on MacBook Pro Intel from 10.5.8 to a more recent operating system?

I would like to know what is the most recent version of the operating system that I can update to on my computer.
Thanks.

Upgrading to Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
If you need to purchase Snow Leopard contact Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service. The price is $29.00 plus tax. You will receive physical media - DVD - by mail.
Third-party sources for Snow Leopard are:
Snow Leopard from Amazon.com
Snow Leopard from eBay
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.
If you need to purchase Lion contact Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download.
Be sure your computer meets the minimum requirements:

How do I keep Firefox automatically starts when I boot up (OSX 10.6 .8 -- MacBook Pro Intel). It is not in the Startup Items in System Preferences, and automatic startup is not checked in Firefox Options.

    Hi fullrun-
Once Firefox is open, you should be able to open the Right click context menu on the icon. From there you select 'Options' and then de-select 'Open at Login'. Hope that helps.

  • I have an older MacBook Pro using 10.4.11 and want to use new operating system to use the latest iLife. Can i install 10.7 on an external hard drive and use the external hard drive to run new system while leaving my old system intact?

I want to use a new version of iLife (for iMovie and iDVD) but am currently running OS 10.4.11, which won't work with the newer iLife programs. Can i install OS 10.6.3 or 10.7 on an external hard drive, boot to that hard drive and work with the new software (installed on the external hard drive) using my MacBook Pro  (circa 2005/6) as the engine while leaving my laptop running 104.11 the rest of the time?

Yes, you can use an external drive. To upgrade, however, means:
Purchase Snow Leopard DVD then update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8.
Access the App Store with your Apple ID and purchase and download Lion.
Your computer must meet system requirements:

Obviously, you do not have to upgrade to Lion but can stop at Snow Leopard 10.6.8 which is sufficient for the current versions of iLife apps. Note that iDVD is no longer part of the newest version of iLife. Lion 10.7.2 or later is needed should you wish to use iCloud.

  • Can I update my RAM in macbook pro after having it for 2 weeks?

I just got a MacBook Pro and I want to know if I can update the RAM from 4gb to 8gb after having it for 2 weeks or if I have to buy it with the 8gb RAM already installed

Assuming that you have a current model MBP, you can actually install up 16 GB RAM.  The specifications are:  204-pin PC3-12800 (1600 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM.
The two best sources for Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial. If you need instructions, go to the OWC web site and select the appropriate installation video.  You will need a #00 Phillips driver to perform the installation.
    Ciao.

  • Can i update my "open box" macbook pro to osx mountain lion for free?

Hi, i had recently bought an "open box" macbook pro 13 in. I bought it in the time that apple has said a mac would need to be bought to qualify for a free update. Nut according to apple, my mac was bought in December of last year. Is there any way i could possibly get this download? Becuase i just bought it and i really dont know what to do. I dont think i should have to spen the fifteen dollars it is when i technically qualify for the free update. elp would be greatlly appretiated, Thanks.

Where did you buy this "open box" MacBook Pro?
Here are the specifics on the upgrade program:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/uptodate/

  • After upgrading my MacBook Pro memory to 8GB it no longer boots to an operating system.

It is a MacBook Pro, mid June 2009 model and 13".
I've followed the installation videos adequately and the orginal 2 x 2GB have been removed with the new 2 x 4GB successfully slotted in.
It turns on and goes past the first Apple logo and the "ding", then lands on a light grey screen.
A black arrow is active but there is no menu bar, icons or anything showing.
After a while the iTunes screen saver activates and I also noticed an alert from BusySync appear!
Looking for an Apple genius to help me sort this one out!

What I find interesting is this:
A black arrow is active but there is no menu bar, icons or anything showing.
After a while the iTunes screen saver activates and I also noticed an alert from BusySync appear!
That suggesting that the computer is booting up - no other way to see the cursor screen saver. It would be strange to see this occur with bad memory but when returning the original RAM led to the same thing...
I think it would be a good idea (start with whatever RAM you have installed now) to do a safe boot. Restart the computer holding the shift key until the grey Apple screen appears. Among other things this will force the system to perform a disk test and will erase cache files that sometimes cause problems. If the computer boots normally into Safe Mode you can then try booting normally again.

  • How can i install windows 7 on macbook pro lion  from usb?

hello am sorry to disturb you
i would like to know the above question since i have looked almost everywhere and i have received no answer
i have a macbook pro i5 with lion
i have been trying for month to install windows 7 as a secondary boot to my mac
but i haven't been able to
    things that i have done
    -i had downloaded win7 iso
    -using another computer i installed win7 on the usb { win to flash }
-i have used bootcamp assistant but apparently i need a dvd of win7 which i currently don't have
-i have installed Reffit but i always get a flashing screen when try to load windows
please i hope you can reply me back if possible
    my thoughts are
is that apple disabled the efi on lion to not be able to boot from usb flash drive
my reasoning to this is that is used to work  on leopard but not lion
again am trying to boot from usb not burn a disc
    please help att alcidio

Rule #1 that TP missed: ISO have to be burned at SLOWEST 2X burn speed to work.
There is/was a long thread but booting Windows from USB-DVD or flash is hit or miss, it may work. USB-DVDs often do not but it is possible to edit the plist to add the Mac ID string to it.
    Boot Camp Assistant -
    create a partition (done)
download Windows Support Software (drivers to install after Windows is running) (done)
Start the install and boot process - not really needed or essential
And you can use Paragon, you can use Windows 7 or later DVD and do entire install (but on a dedicated 100% Windows hard drive).
Flash drive: has to be MBR and FAT or NTFS (I think, sounds right) same for putting Apple drivers on flash card  for which there is an Apple Tech Article.

  • How can i determine what year my macbook pro is from?

Get more information about your computer. Go to the Apple in the upper left corner of any window, then "About This Mac", then "More Info..."  Copy and paste the information here, but omit the serial number and Hardware UUID (if present).

Try resetting your SMC and NVRAM before attempting to install again.
    Resetting the NVRAM/PRAM
Note: This will not delete any data.
The NVRAM/PRAM stores information such as speaker volume, screen resolution, startup disk selection, and recent kernel panic information (if any). You should reset the NVRAM/PRAM if you experience issues relating to these functions.
Shut down the computer by going to Apple () > Shut Down…
Select Shut Down or allow the computer to shut down automatically.
Turn on the computer by pressing the Power Button.
On the built-in keyboard, press and hold the Command (⌘), Option (⌥), P, and R keys before the gray screen appears.
Continue to hold down the keys until the computer restarts and you hear the startup chime for the second time.
Release the keys on the built-in keyboard.
Resetting the SMC of an Intel-based portable Mac with a battery you should not remove on your own
Note: This will not delete any data.
The SMC is responsible for controlling various system functions. None of your data will be deleted by resetting the SMC.
Shut down the computer by going to Apple () > Shut Down…
Select Shut Down or allow the computer to shut down automatically.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter into a power source and then connect it to your Mac if you have not already done so.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift (⇧), Control (⌃), and Option (⌥) keys and the Power Button at the same time.
Release the (left side) Shift (⇧), Control (⌃), and Option (⌥) keys and the Power Button at the same time.
    I hope I helped.

Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion or Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard — Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements

           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and

    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service — this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
Upgrading to Mountain Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mountain Lion or Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion or Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
