HT1237 EFI Boot off USB.

Why isn't  iMac 8,1 (Model identifier) in the list of firmware updates for EFI boot?

Sort of. Not sure if I'm missing something on my Mac or if there is an issue with the EFI boot USB memory stick.
When I power on and hold down the Options key, my MAC recognizes the USB EFI boot device and gives me the option to boot from USB or Hard Drive.
When I select EFI boot, it freezes and does nothing (or it is extremely slow booting).

  • Intel Boot off USB?

I've heard that booting an Intel Mac off a USB drive is possible. I've searched the forums for "usb boot intel" and other variations, but I'm actually get the exact opposite. Posts come back as "OS X can't boot off USB". I'm guessing this has something to do with using the keywords and not the actual phrase.
As far as I know this has been established by Apple and is not specualtion. I was wondering if boot from USB is possible and if so, why has the transition brought it about?
If there is an extensive post in this forum that has been discussed you can simply post the link and I'll be happy to conduct my research by reading it.
If not, I'd like to hear anyone input and comments.

Intel-based Macs: I know one person with a MacBook Pro. They have been successful starting up that computer from both FireWire and USB 2.0 drives. I memory serves, they reported the boot from USB 2.0 is slow. There is nothing "official" — such as a KB article — about this.
PPC Macs: Start up from USB devices is unsupported. Certain older Macs cannot boot from an external FireWire drive, as specified in "FireWire Booting: What Computers Support It and How To."
    Good luck!

  • ENVY x2 11-g010nr Notebook PC can't boot off anything but C drive (and that doesn't work)

I have this Envy here and it is stuck in the "repairing disc" loop.  I've gone into advanced repair and command prompt and run chkdsk /R (with no problems) and I've TRIED to run sfc (even with offline options) and it fails to run.
I'd like to try to run some other tools or at least recover the data off of it before I try wiping it out.  This means I need to boot off USB drive or USB cdrom.
Neither of these options are working.
I've disabled secure boot and put both the USB drive and USB Cdrom at the top of the boot order but they won't boot.  They also don't show up when I pick boot menu from the escape key menu when booting.
Both of these disc and jump drives work in other computers as boot devices so it's not that, I use these almost daily and have used them since attempting to get this to work so I know they still work today.
    Any ideas left?

    Hi @Gilligan8
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that your hard drive is stuck in a repair loop, and you are not able to boot off of an external device. I am happy to assist.
Are the USB drive image and the CD legacy boot images or are they UEFI?
Have you tried the BIOS or system hardware tests?
You try one of these methods to try to backup the data on your hard drive, and once have everything safely backed up you could try a system recovery, for which I have two more links below.
How to Recover Data from the Hard Drive of a Dead Laptop - wikiHow.com
Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 8)
Troubleshooting HP System Recovery Problems (Windows 8)
Do not do the recovery until you have tried to backup everything you can to another hard drive.
    I hope this helps.

  • Imac wont boot off windows usb flashdrive

I was able to create a bootable flash drive for windows in bootcamp. My imac(2010 running lion)'s superdrive is broken so I'm using usb to boot off of. I have refit/refind installed, the drive shows up with refit/refind but not from the normal efi menu. When I try to boot off of it form refit/refind it gives me an error "no bootable devices found". I heard that macs with superdrives can only boot off of a cd/dvd.
I tried booting off a 2012 macbook pro (with a superdrive) running mountain lion. It worked perfectly. So I guess it doesn't have to do with only booting from cd/dvd and the flashdrive is fine.
I don't know what to do to get my computer to recognize the flashdrive. The normal efi menu doesn't recognize it, but refit/refind does but that won't boot.

What did you update from? Presumably you updated to Snow Leopard 10.6.2. Have you tried updating from the combo update on Apple's site rather than the incremental update via "Software Update"? That might fix this otherwise mysterious problem.

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
If this does not work, then you will have to erase and reinstall Mountain Lion:
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.

    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on

How do I boot V245 off USB DVD drive?

Apparently cannot be done on Sparc, only on x86.

  • Boot off ext USB HDD?

My HDD failed on me just the other day, I have a new one coming in the post and I wanted to use my old 256GB one as a backup, right now is a storage silo. So I though if this ever happened again I could use my owl one as a spare so the computer can still be used.
I would like to install OS X on the new HDD I am getting then use Copy Cloner (or something) to copy that to my old HDD, of which has an external case. So then I need to know if I can boot off that external drive via USB or if I have to put it in my MacBook?

Hold the Option key immediately after pressing the power key, or while pressing the power key until ALL drives show up. It may take a few extra seconds for some external USB drives to present themselves. Then use the arrow keys or tab key to select the drive you want and press Enter.
After you have booted you can go to System Preferences/Startup Disk and select the external drive as the normal boot drive. It will then boot from that drive normally without any key holding, as long as that drive is plugged into the computer. If that drive is not plugged into the computer, don't worry, it will select the next choice of bootable drive that is present, based on a prescribed order.

  • Can Macbook Pros (and Macbooks) boot off of USB drives?

I know that you cannot boot off of USB drives in iMacs, but is that the case for Macbook Pros and Macbooks too? I have Ubuntu installed on a 16 GB usb drive and was wondering if it is possible to boot to that usb drive. I cannot simple Boot camp or just dual boot my own way because it is a school computer that they lend me for the year.

That's only the case for some PowerPC Macs. It doesn't apply to any Intel Mac, including MacBooks and MacBook Pros.

  • No EFI Boot option from Boot Camp-created Windows 7 USB drive?

I can't get an EFI boot option from my Win7 USB thumb drive. Previously I had been running Mavericks, and with that I was able to select either the BIOS option of the installer ("Windows" under the ALT screen) OR "EFI Boot", but now I'm only getting the bios install option.

The structure should similar to the following, and you can see the EFI files. You can try an SMC reset - Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support and check if it changes the behavior.

  • Can you boot off a usb drive or external hard drive (usb 2.0) on an iMac?

I have an intel iMac that will not boot off of a USB drive with Ubuntu installed (my PC netbook boots off the usb drive fine) or my external hard drive with Ubuntu installed. I heard somewhere that you cannot boot off of usb on iMacs even if they are Intel, but a Genius bar guy told me diffferent. Then why won't it work for me, and how can I make it? Thanks.

I should have been more general in my post - I don't believe any Mac can boot off an external drive with Ubuntu. I could be wrong of course (and if I am, hopefully someone will correct me), but as Mac hardware is so specific that it demands a specific install disk for each build/model/generation, it would be unable to boot with just a "foreign" OS such as Ubuntu installed. As you may know, you can't boot an iMac with an install disk from a different model iMac, Macbook, or any other Mac (unless it is exactly the same build/model), so it doesn't surprise me that it won't boot with Ubuntu.
Edit: and this question begs to be asked: why would you want to boot/use Ubuntu when you have a superb OS to work with already?

  • Cannot boot Arch (USB or HDD) in UEFI Mode

I have a new MSi GT70-0ND, 1x 128GB SSD (no RAID) and 1x 750GB HDD. The SSD was preloaded with an MSi OEM copy of Windows 8. I did not receive an OEM disc, so I've tried to avoid touching the SSD and the hidden recovery partition on the HDD.
Using Universal USB Installer, installed archiso onto USB flashdrive.
Windows boot device selection menu did not detect the flashdrive.
Checked UEFI BIOS settings - USB set to "Full Initial".
Moved flashdrive from port to port, eventually was detected.
Reboot, received an error relating to bootloader signing.
Rebooted again into UEFI BIOS settings, disabled secure boot.
Rebooted, received infamous "No loader found. Configuration files in \loader\entries\*.conf are needed."
Googled, checked forums, saw gummiboot issues, recommendations to use rEFInd, and dd/UEFI issue.
Transferred archiso to working Arch machine, followed instructions here https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/UE … B_from_ISO.
Installed rEFInd using instructions here https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/31894#comment102233. I have since tried various changes to refind.conf and can not discern any difference.
Attempted to boot laptop from flashdrive in UEFI mode after Windows' boot device menu again failed to detect flashdrive multiple times.
Got rEFInd menu, found nothing functional (except Windows bootloader, of course): Arch entry froze the system requiring hard reboot, UEFI Shell v2 gave an assertion error (from memory, it was "String.c(166) String != ((void *)0)"); Googled, seeing some related but no identical errors, UEFI Shell v1 failed to start reporting something like "using load options '<null string>'".
Rebooted in BIOS/Legacy mode, but flashdrive was unbootable (duh)
Again using Universal USB Installer, installed archiso onto flashdrive.
Rebooted in BIOS/Legacy mode, archiso menu appeared, but during udev events, received a drm/nouveau init table error; Hard reboot. Appended
    nouveau.modeset=0
    to kernel line, everything worked
Installed vanilla Arch system to the HDD including UEFISYS partition.
When it came time to set up and install rEFInd/efibootmgr, of course
    modprobe efivars
    failed.
Redid flashdrive the UEFI-safe way on Arch machine, attempted to boot in UEFI mode, it appears that menu entries from my /boot/efi (UEFISYS) partition are present, but this is irrelevant as only the Windows bootloader and \refindx64.efi work (loads rEFInd graphical mode, in which nothing works except BOOTX64.efi which quickly flashes a message with a file path (too quickly to read) then loads Windows. UEFI Shell v2 now has same error as v1:
Using load options '<null string'> Error: Not Found while loading shellx64_v2.efi
rEFInd (version 0.5.0) "About" dialog reports EFI Revision 2.31, Firmware: American Megatrends 4.653, Screen Output: Graphics Output (UEFI)
I have tried adding various things to the refind.conf "options" directive, e.g. gpt, loglevel=7, pci=nocrs, add_efi_memmap, archisobasedir=arch, archisolabel=ARCH_201212, acpi=off, etc. in different combinations.
I am at wits' end. Bottom line: nothing but rEFInd (via flashdrive) and Windows works in UEFI boot mode - nothing. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I doubt if this will help you with your main goal, but I've fixed a few memory bugs in rEFInd recently, so the "String.c(166) String != ((void *)0)" error you mentioned might go away if you upgraded to the latest version of rEFInd (0.6.0).
    Beyond that, here's a suggestion:
Prepare a USB flash drive or CD-R with rEFInd 0.6.0. Be sure to include an EFI driver for whatever filesystem you used in Arch's /boot (or root, if there's no separate /boot partition) in the flash drive's or CD's EFI/BOOT/drivers_x64 directory. (Note that rEFInd 0.6.0 includes an ext4fs driver.)
Using an emergency disc, create a refind_linux.conf file in Arch's /boot directory. Include, at a minimum, two lines, each of which should include the options "ro root=/dev/{whatever} initrd={\path\to\initrd}", changing the device filename to point to your root and the initrd= specification to point to your two Arch initrd files (one for each line). The path should be relative to the root of whatever filesystem holds those files, so if you've got a separate /boot partition, there would be no directories, just the filename preceded by a backslash; and if you have no separate /boot partition, you'd lead with "\boot\". Note the need for BACKslashes, not forward slashes, in the initrd= specification (but forward slashes in the root= specification).
Reboot using the rEFInd flash drive or CD-R you've prepared. With any luck, rEFInd should come up and show you an Arch option. Try using it. If it fails, try again, but hit Insert and select the second option from the list.
With any luck this will get your system booted in EFI mode, but I can't make any promises about that.

  • HP Stream 7-Windows 10 doesn't boot, I can't recovery 8.1 because can't boot from USB-HELP please!!

    Hi everybody, I'm new here!
I am (scuse me: WAS) enjoying a Stream 7
Some days ago I tried to install Windows 10 TP upgrading 8.1 with Bing. After some waiting time it succeeded, but unfortunately I forgave to put in the tablet's SSD the hp drivers, thinking they weren't necessary. So touchscreen, WiFi and all the other stuff didn't work. After I collegated via OTG a keyboard and a mouse I managed to use Windows 10.
Trying to install drivers, my fault, I opened an .exe of Realtek (maybe for the audio), tablet asked to reboot and after that I cannot access to Windows anymore.
I tried to boot Windows 8.1 from a USB, but it doesn't boot, the same even if i disable secure boot.
With disabled bitlocker Windows gives this error
In boot option I set these settings
I put the usb in this way:
The Stream doesn't consider the USB absolutely XD
If I enable again the secure boot Windows gives this error (that at 99% is caused by the .exe I installed):
Rebooting the Stream a couple of time with secure boot it goes in a menu (where touchscreen works) where there are a lot of options to reset Windows, but none of them works. If I try to format from this menu it asks for my account's password, but it doesn't accepts the mine :/
If I try to open the recovery (from volume minus button when it starts) it gives this message:
    Waiting for help,
    Thank you for your patience!
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Hi everyone. I think I have found a solution to this problem. Short background story, I too tried to install Windows 10 (10049) via Windows Update but I was never successful - got stuck at around 30% for more than an hour. I tried to restore to 8.1 but it gave me that 0xc000000f error. Luckily I had made a recovery image to USB before updating to Windows 10.
Please note that by doing this method, you will obviously lose your data.
    Here's what you'll need:
    - Recovery USB (if you don't have one, grab it from this link and I thank you that person from another post). Follow the instructions, this is just basically clean, format to FAT32, set primary and active, and then drag and drop the files and folders from the USB folder to the root USB drive. This particular recovery is from a 5701 model, there is actually no difference between Stream 7 models in terms of hardware, but software is configured differently (different language setup/format) depending on the country/region it's sold.
    - OTG cable
    - Powered USB hub
    - USB Mouse and Keyboard
    - A moment of your time
    1. Plug in the OTG cable to the tablet, and then plug in the USB hub to power and to the OTG. After that, plug in the USB mouse and keyboard and Recovery USB to the USB hub.
    2. Boot the tablet to BIOS by holding down Power + Volume Down at the same time, until you reach the Startup Menu.
    3. Press F10 and navigate to System Configuration > Boot Options. In this menu, we'll have to restore the settings to default.
So if you have disabled Secure Boot, you first need to Clear All Secure Boot Keys and then Load HP Factory Default Keys. Then enable Secure Boot.
Make sure UEFI Boot Order is also default to as follows: OS boot Manager, USB Diskette, USB CD/DVD, Network Adapter.
If you did not make any changes, proceed to 4.
    4. Be prepared to go back to the Startup Menu, because as soon as you press F10 and hit Yes, the tablet will automatically restart. So press and hold the Volume Down button after you hit on Yes.
    5. Press F9 and select Boot From EFI File. If you've done the recovery image ghosting correctly onto the Recovery USB, you should see two entries. One should be RECOVERY and the other may depend (it could be SYSTEM or No label). Select RECOVERY, and then select bootmgr.efi.
At this point the tablet will boot off from the USB and will bring you to Windows Recovery.
    6. Select your keyboard layout, and navigate to Troubleshoot > Reset your PC.
If the drive partition/boot manager is not damaged, it will ask for a recovery key. You can actually skip this step and hide the numpad, revealing the option Skip this drive if you don't have the recovery key anymore, or just really want to start anew.
If the drive partition/boot manager is damaged, the Reset will proceed and will ask you to select a target operating system. In my case it was Windows 8.1.
    7. The next screen will be about Reset your PC telling you what's going to happen. Tap Yes > Yes, repartition the drives > Fully clean the drive > Reset.
The tablet will now do its thing and restore to factory default.
After restoration, a BIOS screen will come up asking if you want to clear the TPM keys. Select Yes, and this will create a new key for the restored installation, bringing you back to a fully factory default tablet.
    Notes:
I recommend not installing a generic Windows 8.1 ISO that is copied straight to the USB drive using the Windows 7 USB/DVD Tool or RUFUS. They won't be compressed or the same as WIMBOOT, which will take up more storage space than stock recovery.
You could actually install another version of Windows 8.1 on the tablet, assuming you know what you are doing (ie. making a WIMBOOT image).
You could also actually install Windows Technical Preview directly, again, assuming you know what you are doing.
This is just a guide to help you try recover your tablet from a failed Technical Preview installation. I hold no responsiblities over your actions.
What I recommend is that use 8.1 for now, and wait for the official release (or at least a more stable Technical Preview release for this tablet if you can't wait that long) of Windows 10.

  • HP Pavilion 11 x2 not booting from USB

I have tried everything I can think of but my HP Pavilion 11 x2 will not boot from USB...I have Windows 10 currently installed on it and need to boot from USB to allow me to install a new OS on the machine.
I have gone into hte bios...(which I can see is a locked bios with very limited options)....I have turned off the Secure Boot option and have set the USB has the first boot device.
But when I hit F9 on startup...it just gives me 2 options:-
    OS Boot Manager
    Boot From EFI File
I have tried Boot from EFI File...but this does not work..
I know the USB is configured correctly as I can boot from it on my desktop computer.
How can I get this to work?
    Thanks in advance

    hi,
i stumbbled into your thread while i was looking for a similar answer for my Pavilion X2 10".
mine was delivered with win 8.1 with bing. it was alright to use, but i was unable to bring this machine to connect to my office domain. due to the lack of networking features which is only available in the pro or enterprise version of win 8.1.
i tried many ways to load in a win 8.1 pro os. the disc is authentic, keys are authentic, usb stick or optical drives; it makes no differences. the machine just refuse to boot into the usb disc / stick like all other previous system does.
there isnt an option for the bios to go into legacy mode. however there is an option to turn off the secure boot, but that does not gives legacy support to the make the system boot to usb.
i had probably done the same things you tried, no matter what setting is done to the bios, there is always only 'os boot manager' and 'ueif' when i hit boot sequence (f9).
had tired everything that i can think of, talking to HP was like talking to an answering machine, and they were asking the most bacis questions ... "were you able to select 'legacy boot' from the bios menu?" ... even when i tell them there isnt a legacy boot option in the bios ... they were too amature .
i concluded that the only way to boot to usb is to do it in uefi with secure boot off and encryption turn off in win 8.1 (else it will bring u to bitlocker).
but i am still unable to boot into the usb media to install win 8.1 pro today. i gave up.

  • Trouble setting up EFI boot on Macbook Pro

I've been running Arch as a single OS on my Macbook Pro 7.1 for a few months using the bios compatibility mode. I would like to try a pure EFI boot. The reason is that I have an OCZ Vertex II SSD that the MBP  fails to boot from, while booting works fine on an 4 y/o Dell Inspiron 6400. I suspect the   SATA running in IDE mode  on the MBP is the cause, and this wiki entry  suggests that under grub2 AHCI can be forced. Also the same page states that the TRIM feature in the kernel is not available in IDE mode.
I read the wiki pages on EFI, grub2 and this how-to http://grub.enbug.org/TestingOnMacbook, but some things are not clear to me:
    - Do i need a separate 'EFI System' partition? If so what folder structure should it have and on which mount point should it be mounted? Does it need to be fat32?
    - Do I need a  BIOS Boot Partition?
    - The how to explains using  the 'Apple bootloader'. But isn't that what grub2 is?
    - Do I need GPT for using EFI on a MBP?
    - Do I need grub2-efi or does grub2 from core/community work well enough?

Thanks for the tips skodabenz. I am getting some progress, in the sense that the Grub menu shows up. But selecting any item  results in black screen with a prompt in the top-left. These are the things that I've been trying, each time swapping harddisk with the SSD:
    - following the tips on http://grub.enbug.org/TestingOnMacbook I verified that the firmware is 64 bit using the mac OSX cd.
    - Also I changed the path of the the contents of /efi/efi/grub2_efi_x86_64_bzr to /efi/EFI/BOOT/
and renamed grub.efi to BOOTX64.EFI as that is where the firmware seems to expect it
    - Furthermore since efi is on a separate partition I added  '/boot/' to the initrd  and kernel lines (see grub.cfg. below).
One or more of these changes made that I when booting with the alt key pressed I can get into the grub menu.  Just before the grub menu appears though I see an error message that is too quick to read. Something like "error 'prefix' ...". Selecting any item in the grub menu results in a prompt.
    - To be sure that it wasn't a typo in grub.cfg I tried this within the chroot, and it doesn't show any errors:
    cat /efi/EFI/BOOT/grub.cfg | /bin/grub2_efi_x86_64_bzr-script-check --verbose
    - I then decided to compile more modules so I did:
grub2_efi_x86_64_bzr-mkimage -d /usr/lib/grub2_efi_x86_64_bzr/x86_64-efi -O x86_64-efi -p "" -o /efi/EFI/BOOT/BOOTX64.EFI minicmd part_msdos part_gpt fat ext2 hfsplus ntfs reiserfs xfs iso9660 ls search loopback linux chain reboot halt appleldr help configfile hexdump loadbios fixvideo sh
    - Still no boot, so I installed the 2.6.36-ck kernel from aur.
    - Then I tried the ahci force tip mentioned in  https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Solid_State_Drives
and added to menu items in the grub.cfg 'insmod setpci' and added to the menu items 'setpci -d 10de:0d85 90.b=40' with the pci id determined from 'lspci -nn'
A strange thing I noticed was that even though when booting from the SSD there is only one drive, when I press 'c' in the grub menu and then 'ls' I get this output, so now there is both a hd0 and hd1:
    (hd0) (hd1) (hd1,gpt3) (hd1,gpt2) (hd1,gpt1) (cd0)
a 'ls (hd1,gpt2)' shows the contents of the partition that contains /boot. When I change the items in grub cfg to set 'root=(hd0,gpt2)' I get 'no such partition' error. When I change it to 'set root=(hd1,gpt2)' I get the black screen with a prompt.
A little research showed the cause for this:
    [root@arch-macbookpro boot]# cat /boot/grub2_efi_x86_64_bzr/device.map
    (hd0) /dev/disk/by-id/ata-Hitachi_HTS545025B9SA02_100610PBL2003SKV6ZPV
    (hd1) /dev/disk/by-id/usb-OCZ-VERT_EX2_FCF0FEFFEFFCF0F33F5231144FF5FD-0:0
I guess I have to change this file and reinstall grub2. Will post the results in a next post.
This is the grub.cfg so far. None of these menu items work:
