HT1267 iPhone Contacts content

My iPhone displays duplicate contact groups. How can I delete the duplicates?

A second way is to go to Settings --> General --> Accessibility and turn on Large Text.

  • How can I sync my iPhone contacts to my Mac and vice-versa, without losing them? Can i do it with iCloud?

I always add new phone numbers on my iPhone Contacts, while new email addresses are always added on my Mac Contacts. The result is that I dont have my recent email contacts on my phone, while on the Mac I dont have the recent phones.
I would like to have ONE common list of contacts (same for iPhone & Mac) which will be AUTOMATICALLY updated for both, once I add a new entry.
I am not sure how to do this with syncing, I am afraid I wll lose my old contacts. Can I do this with iCloud?

    Hello there, Seta.
You are correct that this can be done with iCloud. The following Knowledge Base article provides some great instruction for syncing contacts:
iOS: How to transfer or sync content to your computer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1296
    Particularly:
    Contacts, Calendars, Bookmarks, and Notes
You can sync contacts, calendars, bookmarks, and notes with other applications on your computer. This allows you to keep all your information in sync across multiple computers and iOS devices. The settings for these items are all in the Info tab for your iOS device in iTunes. With your iOS device connected to the computer, select your iOS device. Then click the Info tab.
For details on syncing content on your iOS device with your computer, click the sections below.
    Contacts
To sync contacts with your computer, choose "Sync Contacts with" within iTunes for Windows, or "Sync Contacts" in OS X v10.8, or "Sync Address Book Contacts" in OS X v10.7 and earlier.
You can sync your contacts with:
Microsoft Outlook 2003, Microsoft Outlook 2007, Microsoft Outlook 2010 (Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8)
    Windows Address Book (Windows XP)
Windows Contacts (Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8)
Address Book (Mac OS X v10.7 and earlier)
    Contacts (Mac OS X v10.8)
Microsoft Entourage 2004, Microsoft Entourage 2008, or Microsoft Outlook 2011 for Mac
    Notes:
When syncing contacts, you can choose to sync all of your contacts or only selected groups. The option to sync selected items may not show up until after the first sync.
You can select a group of contacts to which all new contacts created on your iOS device will be added.
Additional options for syncing include syncing your contacts with Yahoo or Gmail/Google Mail. You will need to configure it with the user name and password for your Yahoo or Google account.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • ITunes 9.1 no longer synching iPhone Contacts to Mac Address Book

Since installing iTunes 9.1 (79) today. my iPhone will no longer synch to the Mac Address Book. iPhone software 3.1.3, Mac OS 10.6.3 MacBook Pro 3.1. The only thing I can think of is that my iTunes library is on an external drive (not with me). Everything else seems to be working OK. I tried resetting the iPhone (but did not erase content) to no avail.
Any ideas why this is happening and what to do?

Can anyone help with this? This has been an issue for me for weeks. Changes to contacts on my iPhone (the original one) don't show up in Address Book and changes in Address Book on my iMac don't sync with my iPhone contacts. Both seemed to be separate from each other. Prior to this, it has done so flawlessly since I have owed it.
I just tried the following, from this thread (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=476130):
*1. open address book, go to File > Export > Address Book Archive, save to desktop*
*2. delete all contact info (including groups) from address book, quit address book*
*3. select "sync address book contacts" (all contacts) in itunes info tab (highlight your iphone on the left of the window)*
*4. under "advanced" at the bottom, select contacts under "replace information on this iphone / ipod".*
    *5. sync.*
    *6. uncheck #'s 3 & 4 above*
*7. back in address book, import your address book archive file to restore your address book.*
*that should do it- sorry if this was unclear, need to hit the hay.*
My Address Book imported back in fine. Now my iPhone contacts are empty and won't sync back with what is on the computer. When I click on my iPhone in iTunes and go to Info to click "Sync Address Book Contacts," there is nothing in the box. Prior to attempting the above fix, the iPhone's contacts showed up in that box, but not the most recent version of Address Book on my computer.
I have not lost my Address Book contacts, they are backed up, but I just want to be able to sync it all with my iPhone again. My iPhone contacts are currently empty and I could use them for work today.
Any ideas would be much appreciated -- thanks!

Can I use Google Sync to transfer only my contacts from my IPhone 4 to my gmail account? I do not want to sync info from Gmail to the IPhone. Can the sync work only one-way? I have 0 contacts & 0 calendar events on my gmail account. I opened the Gmail account specifically to for the Google Sync and wil only be using this account as a back-up for my IPhone contacts. You do realize that the SIM only contains account information for your wireless account.
Moving the SIM from phone to phone does not cause any of your iTunes content, contacts, email, etc to magically appear on the device.

  • Transfer iPhone contacts & calendars to brand new outlook 2007

Someone gave me an iPhone 3GS as a gift, I pressed the reset button and used outlook 2007 & itunes to sync my contacts & calendars.
Everything on my iPhone is fine.
My contacts & calendars in Outlook 2007 were accidentally in wrong orders by importing a backup file in pst format(Outlook Format).
For future synchronization ,I am afraid that my iPhone contacts & calendars will be in wrong orders due to the changes in Outlook 2007.
Can I transfer my iPhone contacts & calendars to a brand new outlook 2007 (without any data & resetting my outlook 2007)?
    If not,any other solutions?
The main reason of this discussion is to make my Outlook contacts & calendars in correct orders and my iPhone contacts & calendars will not be affected.
Hopefully I have a backup .pst file with correct data on my harddisk.
    Hope you guys can help.
    Thank you so much!

The Synchronization dons’ not affect the order of how information’s are displayed between outlook and iPhone IOS. It only affects the content of your contacts and calendars information’s.
However, if you want to synchronize to a brand new outlook (this mean new Mail profile), you should create a new mail profile to use with outlook. Always make a backup of your iPhone and outlook before you modify any settings.
To create a new profile, go to Mail setting in the Control Panel or Execute control mlcfg32.cpl from C:\Programs Files\Microsoft Office\OfficeXX from the Command Prompt to access Mail directly.
From here you can display the main profile which iTunes using to synchronize your information’s (Show Profiles… Button). This one called generally outlook, it is created automatically as you execute your outlook for the first time.
Then you have to create a new one using ADD button, as you finish choose Always use this profile then drop down the menu to select the new created profile.  Apply the new setting and restart your outlook.
Now you suppose to have the new profile of outlook, this let you synchronize your information with nonfactual content.
You can go back to the old profile by choosing it as the default one from Mail setting. Be careful not to synchronize with iTunes when the default profile is set to the old one.
Remark: in the Mail setting “mlcfg32.cpl “ if you choose the following option (Prompt for a profile to be used) then every time when you open outlook it will prompt you to select the profile that you need to work within, the problem that when iTunes want to synchronize your content it can’t select arbitrary on of theses profiles and this will dysfunction, so it is preferred that you select (Always use this profile) option.

  • How to Control the Sorting Order of iPhone Contacts from Outlook?

In a series of editing steps we've loaded ca. 1,900 personal and business contacts from Outlook into a 1st gen iPhone with 2.0.1 software on it. To our surprise we found that while most of the entries were listed and sorted by company, certain entries were listed and sorted by the person's name. It looked random and there didn't seem to be any way to control it on the iPhone.
While troubleshooting the problem we synced up the iPhone with an empty Address Book on a MacBook Pro and found that the sort order flag was indeed set differently on these entries. When we changed the sorting flag of a contact in the Mac's Address Book to "Company" it also changed on the iPhone after the next sync.
Problem: In our business environment it is impossible to switch to Macs for contact administration. We need to do it from Outlook. This is one of several features needed for the adoption of iPhones.
Question: Is there a way to control this flag on the individual iPhone contact entries from Outlook Contacts?

Well, I think we figured it out.
Outlook doesn't offer a sorting flag on person or company name. Instead it uses a separate "File As" string. The problem with our contacts was that this "File As" string was frequently edited to be something else than exactly the personal or company name, e.g. it was set to an abbreviated company name. Once we set the "File As" to any of the defaults offered, i.e. person or company name, the sorting flag in iPhone was properly set through the synchronization.
Obviously, the application logic compares the content of these fields in Outlook and decides how to set the flag. If it can't find the company name in "File As" it defaults to person.
This was an expensive holdup for us. It cost us 2 man days to figure it out. Is there any place where such application logic is described?

How do I delete my existing iPhone contacts then sinc just my google contacts?

Idealy you should move your itunes content from your old computer to your new one
    Here are your options
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Then just sync your iPhone with the new computer. It will ask to erase but as everything in in your new itunes this is OK. Then choose what to sync back onto your iphone
If you no longer have the old computer here is how to restore your library from the iPhone
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
Then you can sync your machine with the new computer.
If you do not care about this and just want to extract the items mentioned
I found this and it will extract your Contacts and messages.

Everything should live on your computer.  the iphone just allows your computers content to be portable. You should have been syncing them with your computer/cloud service from day one.

    Hello JellyFishFun,
It sounds like you are wanting to stop certain data from syncing between your families devices. From what you describe it seems that the same iCloud account is signed in on them. You can configure each device to sync only certain content with iCloud or each other by disabling the options you do not want to sync on either your iPad, or their devices. This article outlines where to check for these settings for you to customize for your situation:
Apple ID: What to do after you change your Apple ID
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5796
I understand that you have not changed the Apple ID but the article lists services that use an Apple ID for you to check to see if the account is setup with those services.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,

I am using iOS 7 and run Mavericks. I want to sync (be it either through iCloud or through the desktop) the contents of my iPhone contacts with a specific group of contacts on either iCloud or a group in Contacts. How do I do that?

    Hello Jim,
It took forever. With MobileMe, it was immediate.
Up in the cloud the clocks seem to tick differently and time is relative, so we will just have to learn to be patient ...
To be serious, the first iCloud experiences seem to be different on the different continents, depending on the time zone you are in. In Europe there does not seem to be so much traffic up in the Cloud during day time  as in the states,

  • Will This Sync Erase the iPhone's Contents?

Hi. My iTunes is completely blank (OS X newly installed, no backups). If I synced it with my iPhone, will the iPhone's contents be erased? If yes, can you recommend any third-party app that'll put the contents from the iPhone to OS X? The priorities to backup are the Contact and the SMS (videos and photos are secondary priorities). I'm also subcsribed to MobileMe. If MobileMe is going to help back it up, will need the info on how to go about doing that.
    Thank you in advance.

  • Other Apps Besides iTunes That'll Back Up All of iPhone's Contents?

Hi. iTunes only backups or syncs in one direction, from iTunes to the iPhone but if you want to put the contents of the iPhone to the iTunes to overwrite what's on the iTunes, there's no feature yet for iTunes or iPhone to do that (anyone knows why Apple has not made that so?). I did wish it was straightforward and that you could just choose from or to which device you want to overwrite and you could see graphically the flow of data so you'd know exactly how it'll go about things.
What other third-party apps could back-up your iPhone contents completely?
    Thank you in advance.
    Gbu.

    You're welcome.
I'm just wondering supposing if you just got a new Mac with a freshly installed OS (or a freshly installed OS X without back up) and supposing you already have an iPhone (or any iOS device) first which is filled with photos, movies, sms and third-party apps already. Upon syncing with iTunes (blank) on the new Mac does it mean the iPhone's contents will be erased because iTunes only syncs one way, from itself to the iPhone? What's the solution for situations like this?
    Copied from my previous post.
+*The iPhone is not designed or intended to be a backup storage device or a stand alone device, so there is no reason for a backup of all iPhone contents especially since the overwhelming majority of iPhone contents should be and remain on your computer's hard drive which should be included with your computer's backup.*+
First and foremost, the iPhone is not designed or intended to be a backup storage device or a stand alone device. There is no excuse to not have a backup for all important data on your computer's hard drive - none whatsoever.
When syncing iTunes content with an empty iTunes library, all iTunes content on the iPhone will be erased. For the not too bright folks who don't maintain a backup for all important data on their computer's hard drive and namely their iTunes library or at least for some of it, iTunes includes an option to transfer iTunes content that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store from an iPod, iPad, or iPhone, but this is for iTunes content that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store only.
Photos transferred from your computer to your iPhone (selected under the Photos tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes) are optimized for viewing on your iPhone as part of the iTunes sync/transfer process - the original resolution of these photos is reduced on your iPhone, which is why the transfer of photos from your computer is a one way transfer process only. Photos on your computer's hard drive should be included with your computer's backup along with all other important data. There is no excuse for not having a backup for your computer's most important data.
Any third-party apps (freeware if possible) that'll put the iPhone's contacts to OS X's address book and/or the SMS to OS X at least?
Also copied from my previous post.
+*Although your iPhone contacts are included with your iPhone's backup, contacts are designed to be synced with a supported address book application on your computer. Your contacts should be available on your computer regardless - with or without an iPhone or any cell phone, which can be lost or stolen.*+
Contacts are important data to most people, so contacts should already be available on your computer and be included with your computer's backup along with all other important data. With an empty supported address book application, before the first sync for this data enter one contact in the supported address book application on your computer. This will provide a merge prompt with the first sync for this data, which you want to select.
SMS/MMS are not synced - there is no supported OS X or Windows application to sync SMS/MMS. SMS/MMS are included with your iPhone's backup, which is updated by iTunes as the first step during the iTunes sync process. There are a number of 3rd party apps/utilities that provide for extracting this data from your iPhone's backup on your computer. Here is one such app/utility.
    http://mobilesyncbrowser.com/
The photos are easier to back up using Image Viewer or iPhoto).
iPhoto or Image Capture on a Mac can be used for importing photos/videos from the iPhone's Camera Roll, but this is not a backup - not technically. Although photos/videos in the Camera Roll are included with your iPhone's backup which is updated by iTunes as the first step during the iTunes sync process, photos/videos on the Camera Roll can and should be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera. All photos/videos imported from the iPhone's Camera Roll and from any other digital camera along with all other photos on your computer's hard drive should be included with your computer's backup along with all other important data. Apple makes maintaining a backup easy or much easier with Time Machine.
