Try this step and if you cannot get your device into recovery mode there is a chance you have a hardware failure and you need to call apple to see what service options you have.

My daughter has cracked the screen on her iphone 5c. Someone knocked into her whilst she was holding it. Will Apple replace it and at what cost. Also have tried contacting apple via the website however they ask for the serial number which I cannot access. Have tried connecting to iTunes and it asks for the phone to be unlocked.

It sounds to me like the charger that came with the iPhone 5 is defective, or the cable is if you've been switching the cables when you switch the chargers.

Plug it into external power for approximately 20 minutes.
If it does not power on at that point, try a reset by pressing and holding the power and home buttons for 15-20 seconds until the white Apple logo appears.

After connecting to iTunes, I noticed that "Back up to iCloud" was selected (in the middle of the screen on the "Summary" tab, under "Backup"), and "Last backed up to iCloud" reflected the time that I attempted to back up from my phone.
