You could try an identify by serial number web site service, or narrow it down by any other build year and model specification you may find among other resources available to you. Also if you have the Mactracker database, that can help further with upgrade info.

Isn't it awesome that after you spend 2500$ + on a laptop you need to also become a computer technician in order to keep it working. The fan in my MacBook Pro runs all the time and the computer is also very hot all the time. I always try to make sure it's not sitting on a flat surface that might make it run hotter. I'm running 10.6.8. Is there anything I can do to fix this? When should the fan be running? Should it run when I have more than one program running at a time? Is the MacBook Pro designed to only run one program at time? At the moment I'm watching a show via Firefox. There are no other programs running, the computer is raised off the table, the fan is running at about half the speed it usually does, moments ago the fan was going full bore. Google Browser was open, iTunes was open, text edit was open, but none of them being used - I was using Firefox and watching a movie online with browser window on fullscreen. Anyone got any suggestions? Should I just enroll into a university and begin my studies as computer technician?

How can I get my data off my MacBook Pro hard drive?

So initially, water was spilled on my MacBook Pro keyboard. I promptly shut it down, turned it upside down, mopped up the water and let it dry out for a day near a heater. The next day it worked fine and continued to do so for about 2 more days until it decided it would no longer start up. Right now it can't make it to the login screen at start up, it just shuts down, the same thing happens in safe mode as well. So, since I haven't backed up my data recently, I was wondering if there was a way I could rescue my data from the hard drive. I did take it in to the Genius Bar, but they couldn't help me since it wouldn't start up in safe mode. Is there a way around this like hooking up an alternate monitor or am I just screwed?

Once you do look for home folder and copy everything to the other mac or another external drive.

How can I tell for certain that my MacBook Pro is being hacked?

I am not a very proficient computer user but lately things have been moved around, modified, and/or missing from my MacBook Pro. Purchases have even been made after changing my passwords and I keep coming across files in codes that are like hieroglyphics to me. How do I tell what version (update / release level) of version 6 has been applied to my system? I have applied several different release levels to version 6 of FF but all the about feature tells me is Version 6.0. no version! This seems to be a change in the way updates are handled. Is that a bending because of the speed of which you're pushing out updates and new releases?

Nope, I never used Chrome, but I did try Chromium on my Windows desktop PC for a few months last year. I got tired of the Google updater. exe running all the time and Google's method of doing updates, so it's gone. I do have Chromium on my Linux EeePC since last summer, but Ubuntu handles all updates and gives the user the capability to accept or deny, any or all updates - much more to my liking, similar to the way Mozilla does it. I don't like software developers forcing to update until I am ready to proceed.
There's a lot more about this new Fast Release system, than just the lack of visible version numbers, that I don't like. The Nightly, Aurora, Beta, & Release sequence is dumb with the way it changes the version numbers. I prefer installing (for instance) what will become version 7 and have that installation progress thru the 4 stages, instead. Now it's like Nightly going from 7 to 8, Aurora going from 6 to 7, and Beta doing - hell, I won't know if it becomes a Release or if it just dies and I will have to install the Release version myself. ''Quite honestly I don't care, because I don't think this new "system" is going to last too long without major modifications. I also dislike the UI changes in 4/5/6/7 enough that I am still using Firefox 3.6 for almost everything and Firefox 2.0.0.20 for the rest. I am having difficulty finding out what the iTunes build is for the current download from the Apple site. I am running iTunes 7.6 (29); I assume the "29" is the build for my installed version. I also assume that Software Update will ignore build changes unless the version changes.
