HT1277 mail for my domain

I am trying to set up mac mail with my own domain, the outgoing is working but when someone tries to reply it is getting mail failure delivery problems. my domain mail is support by google/a... any advice?

Can you reply to your own incoming mail? - Send yourself a test message.
I have my mail set to always bcc myself so that I can monitor it - it also keeps my various POP accounts synchronised.

  • Mail for vanity domains

we have some vanity domains, e.g. they are not our main organization, but we still want to receive e-mail at them, for several accounts. what are the best ways to deal with this? our DS has one organization in use, and it's our main domain.
i could just forward the e-mail, but maybe there's a better solution?
    thanks,

    Hello:
First off, I'm thinking you did too much.
If what you want is to have a few of your existing users accept mail for another domain, all you need to is add
    mailalternateaddress
    OR
    mailequivalentaddress
Adding both is bad, and will inactivate that mail address.
Doint the above, AND adding vanity domain stuff will make it worse . . .
If the server accepted the mails, but didn't deliver 'em anywhere, most likely the messages are still in the queue. Look for message files in your tcp_local channel (most likely, but not the only possibility), where the file name has been changed to ".held". The server does this when it thinks the message will loop, and then requires manual intervention to resolve the problem.
Look, too, at the Access Log on your LDAP server. Look specifically for the search for that mail address. Check the return for >1 "nentries=". If you get more than one, then that mail address can't work. Mail addresses need to be unique.
You can also test the mta, to see what it whould do with a mail:
    imsimta test -rewrite test_mail_address@domain
If you'd like to explain more fully what it is you're trying to achieve, perhaps i can help you get there with a minimum of problems. It's also very worthwhile including
    imsimta version
output when you ask questions, as there are over 25 different versions of 5.2, each with different issues. . . .

  • How to configure mail for multiple domains

    Hi There:
I am the only Admin for a Mac Mini Lion Server, I have 3 Domains that I host, the DNS is done separate along with all records.
I was able to get the Web Sites up and running.
I need help to set up Separate E-Mail Accounts for each Domain, so each Domain receives it's own mail.
Will you please give a hand, I am a beginner
    Thank YOU!!! in advance!!!!

There is no default for those entries. you need to set it up manually by using the custom label.

  • Is mail for virtual domains fixed in snow leopard?

My goal is to set up several different domains, and have email for users for each of those domains
In 10.5 (Leopard) you could set this up by creating virtual hosts (for the extra domains), and by creating an email alias' --- however this was broken functionality requiring significant (to me at least as I am not a programmer) manual circumvention of the setup and administration tools provided by apple
Does anyone know if this is now fixed in 10.6 (snow leopard)? Can I, just using the admin tools and without any behind the scenes programming tweaks, set this up?
    Cheers,
    Brad

It's not clear which "manual" you used to set up virtual domains.

  • DNS for Mail service Virtual Domains

On a server primarily running as a Mail server with 10.6.3 (DNS and OD also running)
If host name is mail.domain.com and
if mail service has a virtual domain virtualdomain.com,
in the DNS setup, virtualdomain.com should have an MX record like mail.virtualdomain.com and either an A record pointing to the IP of mail.domain.com OR a CNAME pointing to mail.domain.com?
When setting to the CNAME, DNS logs says:
    "25-May-2010 11:47:52.610 zone virtualdomain.com/IN/com.apple.ServerAdmin.DNS.public: virtualdomain.com/MX 'mail.virtualdomain.com' is a CNAME (illegal)"
but if I set to an A record pointing to the IP, isn't there a PTR conflict with the mail.domain.com pointing to the same IP?

SMTP requires an A or AAA as the required response for the box named in an MX.
Your MX for the domain or subdomain would/should/must aim at an A or AAA.
Not a CNAME. That's considered illegal.
Yes, random domains can all have their respective MX records pointing to the same mail server. So long as the mail server has an A or AAA record. And that mail server itself is expected to be configured to accept mail for those domains for local delivery, or as part of a relay.

  • DNS for Multiple Domains

I am trying to figure out the proper configuration for DNS that will support multiple domains. I have DSN working now for just one domain.
My XServe has a static IP connected directly to cable modem and is the master nameserver. I also have an Ubuntu server with static IP connected directly to cable modem that is the secondary (slave) nameserver.
On the XServe, I currently have a primary zone created for domain1.com. with:
    * an A record for domain.com. (Fully Qualified) and the same static IP as the XServe
    * an A record for ns1 (not fully qualified) and the same static IP as the XServe
    * Aliases for ftp, www and mail (not fully qualified) mapped to destination ns1.domain1.com. (Fully Qualified)
Nameservers under the Primary Zone is ns1.domain1.com. and Mail Exchangers is ns1.domain1.com. with a priority of 10.
The reverse zone is getting created appropriately for me as far as I can tell. I am able to access www.domain1.com just fine as well as mail and ftp.
Now I want to add a new domain2.com to this master nameserver. I know that I will need a new Primary Zone for domain2.com. to be recognized and to setup it's aliases?
Can I use the same static IP or do I have to have a unique static IP?
Can I use the ns1.domain1.com. nameserver or does the new domain2.com need new nameservers?
    Does domain2.com have it's own A records?
Does the mail exchangers need to be different for domain2.com?
It seems like all the documentation and information that I can find are just for configuring one domain and not so much for multiple domains. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Spotted Dog

Don't think of subsequent domains as being any different from the first domain.
For every domain you need to provide certain information, including a list of the hostnames within that domain. There is no relationship between 'www' in domain1.com and 'www' in domain2.com (unless you point them to the same address, but that's a different issue).
Any host record in the zone can either be an A record (where you specify an IP address) or a CNAME (where you specify another hostname that it maps to).
In the case of your web server handling both domains you could set 'www.domain2.com' as an A record with the appropriate IP address, or you could set it as a CNAME with a value of 'www.domain1.com.' (essentially saying 'www.domain2.com has the same IP address of www.domain1.com, so go find that address').
It's also possible to use cross-domain records for things like name servers and mail servers - in other words you can set your MX record for domain2.com to mail.domain1.com (essentially saying that domain2.com's email is handled by mail.domain1.com).
Can I use the same static IP or do I have to have a unique static IP?
That's not a question for DNS. What you're defining are the hostnames in that domain. If you have one server (e.g. a web server) that can handle multiple domains (e.g. one apache server handling web traffic for both domain1.com and domain2.com) then, sure, you can use the same IP address for both.
If, on the other hand, you have specific services that cannot be multi-hosted (e.g. HTTPS) then you will need different IP addresses.
Can I use the ns1.domain1.com. nameserver or does the new domain2.com need new nameservers?
Sure, it's entirely possible to use domain1.com's name servers for domain2.com.
    Does domain2.com have it's own A records?
It can do, or not, as you choose. If you're running www.domain2.com on the same server as www.domain1.com then you could use a CNAME record to point www.domain2.com to www.domain1.com.,or you could set an A record with the same IP address.
The result would be the same, but the CNAME has the advantage that if your IP address changes you only need to change your DNS in one place (www.domain1.com) and all the other addresses would automatically follow.
Does the mail exchangers need to be different for domain2.com?
Not at all, if your mail server is configured to handle mail for both domains it's entirely possible to specify mail.domain1.com as the MX record for domain2.com.

  • E-mail addresses for additional domains

We own 3 domain names and I'm confused on how to set up e-mail for a user who uses all 3 domains. They use the same short name for all 3 accounts. We have the domains up and running.
    example:
    [email protected]
    [email protected]
    [email protected]
How would I do this in OSX server 10.4.3?
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

If you don't need virtual domains (sounds like you don't)
Then just add the other domains to the local host aliases.
    In Server Admin application
    Mail:Advanced:Hosting
Click + button to add new Local Host Aliases
Every domain you host should be listed there.
Mail for user@anydomain will arrive in the same mailbox.
Of course all of this assumes DNS is setup properly.
If you want to know more about virtual domains, a search here will come up with plenty. The Server docs also.

  • Apple Mail & Google Apps for Your Domain

I'm trying to set up my Apple Mail so my Google Apps for my domain works on my Mac without having to go through Google. I can receive emails to my Google Apps account, but I can't send them through Apple Mail. It says my message "was rejected by the server smtp.gmail.com." I thought I set up the account properly, but I guess not. Any help is much appreciated.

Coming back to the original question out of curiousity - why

Wait - are you saying that GoDaddy forces even dedicated

  • Setting up Mail for the first time with OSX Server 10.5.6

I just got done reading the 100+ page mail services administration manual. A few things are unclear and I wanted to clear those up prior to embarking on my first adventure configuring mail services.
The questions I have are the following:
    1. When using mail for incoming and outgoing, do I 'have' to use local DNS services or can I simply change the MX records by my DNS Provider?
    2. I have more than one IP on the server using the 'IP Alias' command. Will the mail server be able to distinguish the different mail domains base on IP Address, or will virtual domains need to be configured?
    3. If virtual domains need to be configured, is this configuration simple or is it semi complex?
    4. Provided the answer to questions two and three, what is the best configuration for the firewall settings on the server? Allow IMAP inbound, POP3, and SMTP? What else?
    Thanks in advance

    1. Mail service relies heavily on DNS. You may run your own DNS servers on the same network as your mail server or you can use a DNS provider to host your zone data including your MX record.
    2. Your server will listen on all available network devices by default. It will only accept those messages for the hosts that are listed in the general pane, the local host list, or the virtual domain list under the advanced pane. No virtual domains need to be configured if all users are real users (i.e. shows up in WorkGroup Manager).
    3. As stated in (2), you do not need virtual domains to receive e-mail for multiple hostnames or domain names, but you may want to do so if you want separate accounts with same usernames for different domains. E.g. [email protected] and [email protected] will go to two separate inboxes. It's not that difficult, but rather tedious if you already have a lot of e-mail accounts set up.
    4. You must allow SMTP through the firewall to receive mail from the outside world. Depending on your clients, you may open IMAP or POP. There are no other specific ports necessary for mail to work at this level... except for Submission (587). Many ISP's block port 25 for mail clients. You may want to use port 587 for submissions so that your mobile users don't have to switch back and forth between the two ports when they change locations. This is done by editing /etc/imapd.conf manually.
