HT1296 add music without erasing and synicing exsisting music

i want to put my music from my phone on to itunes, but i don't wan to erase all my music that is currently on my iphone. i want to know how i can get it on itunes without clearing my playlists or clearing my music.

Tip Via Wjosten
This is for those of you who have no backup of your current iTunes library, and are replacing the computer your phone normally syncs with or are just replacing the hard drive. Again, no backup.
By design, the iPhone will sync iTunes content with one computer at a time. Any attempt to sync such content with a second computer will result in ALL iTunes content being first erased from your phone & then replaced with the content from the second computer. This is a design feature and cannot be overridden. Because you replaced your computer, or hard drive, your phone will see this as a "new" computer. The iTunes content sync is one way: computer to phone. If you have photos that were synced to your phone or music ripped on your own that were not backed up, you will first have to extract them from your phone using third party software, before you do anything else, as Apple makes no provision to do so:
If on a Mac, use this:
http://www.ecamm.com/mac/phoneview/
If on a PC, use this:
http://www.wideanglesoftware.com/touchcopy/index.php
Once you've done that, do the following in the order specified:
1. Disable auto sync when an iPod/iPhone is connected under iTunes>Preferences>Devices(under Edit menu if using Windows).
2. Make sure you have one contact & one event in the supported applications on your computer(iCal & Address Book on a Mac, Windows Address Book or Outlook if using Windows). These entries can be fake, doesn't matter, the important point is that these programs not be empty.
3. Connect your phone, iTunes running, do not sync at this point.
4. Store>Authorize this computer.
5. File>Transfer Purchases(To make sure all purchased content on your phone will be in your iTunes library).
6. Right click your phone in the left device pane & select "Reset warnings".
7. Right click again and select "Backup".
8. Right click again & select "Restore from Backup", select the backup you just made. When prompted to create another backup, decline.
9. This MUST be followed by a sync to restore your iTunes content, which you select from the various tabs, You'll get a popup regarding your contacts & calendars asking to merge or replace, select "Merge".
Your phone should look just like it did when you started, with no data loss.
You should be good to go.

  • Unable to manually manage music and videos on iPhone 4 without erase and sync, same computer!

Ok, so I know you all have heard this before but I do believe my case is rather unique, and quite frustrating.
I purchased an iPhone 4 and synced it to the same computer I am using now - created the playlist and used it to sync with phone. Worked great for awhile; but one day I contracted some nasty malware and had to wipe my computer and reinstall my OS (Windows 7). Albeit my music library was on my external HDD which survived the onslaught. I obviously had to reinstall iTunes afterwards. The playlist was gone on reinstall.
Afterwards I still didn't see an issue with my iPhone and iTunes: When I plug it in it syncs, everything seems to be working accordingly.
But I recently transferred some new music from a CD to my iTunes and wanted to throw those songs on my iPhone, the drag and drop method I was so very used to did not work and I noticed that "manually manage music and videos" was uncheck under my devices summary.
When I attempt to check this option in iTunes it gives me a popup notification telling me I need to erase and sync in order to use this option because my 'iPhone is synced with another library". Again, I DID have to reinstall iTunes after reinstalling my OS.
I have tried all the tricks that google could supply me with with no avail; authorizing, stopping the sync from automatically starting.... yada yada - none of these cookie cutter methods have worked for me.
    Here's a too long didn't read:
    >iPhone 4 was working fine - used playlist to sync with.
    >Had to reinstall OS (Windows 7) Playlist gone.
    >Reinstall iTunes.
    >iPhone still syncs with library, no error messages on connect.
    >Unable to manually manage music and videos without erase and sync.
    >None of the usual methods work.

Hmm, I will say after posting this and looking at the related threads it seems I can only either use manually manage or sync.
I was using sync before but since the playlist disappeared I was syncing with I simply want to add music to my phone without deleting everything. Is this possible?
If I use "manually manage music and videos" will it delete everything or just the music and videos? It doesn't specify...
Could I just create a new playlist and sync it with that? If so how?
The bottom line is it isn't that big of a deal if I need to simply rebuild my iPhone music library but losing my configuration, contacts etc is not an option. Optimally I would just like to be able to add my new music to my iPhone without having to rebuild my library.

  • Why did apple mail get much worse with lion osx?  I can't add recipients without copy and paste?

why did apple mail get much worse with lion osx?  I can't add recipients without copy and paste?

I went through updates on my three newest Macs this week.  As I stated I'm talking about iTunes 10.5.1 (42).  I am checking for updates now and I see 10.5.2 is now available.  I'll know in about 15 minutes if this issue is fixed or not.
    15 minutes later:
I must have updated this PPC G5 a day or two before iTunes 10.5.2 came out.  I was able to update to 10.5.2 (11) and this copy/paste bug is fixed.  I'm happy again.

  • How do I download a voice memo from an ipod touch onto my library without erasing and syncing the itouch

how do I download a voice memo from an ipod touch onto my library without erasing and syncing the itouch?

Are you trying the "sync" the Voice Memos to a computer other than your syncing computer?  If it is to your syncing computer just follow the instructions in the Users Guide.  If to another computer you will have to make a backup of the iPod on that computer and then restore the iPod from that backup and then sync to the computer.

  • Cannot manually manage music and videos without erasing and syncing first

I have an iPhone 3G bought new from the Apple store using 2.1. Using iTunes 8.0 and checking the "Manually manage music and video" checkbox, iTunes prompts me to "Erase and Sync", no other option is available to me. It was the same when using version 7.7 as well.
I'm not syncing to another computer, it's the same MacBook I've had for almost a year. How do I get the Library Persistent ID in iTunes to match the iPhone. I have the ID from the iTunes Music Library.xml file. I just need to know where the matching file for the iPhone is so I can make them match.
The ID doesn't match because I had to rebuild my drive a month ago and my question to Apple (actually Steve) is why can't I sync the other way from the phone to the computer.
Why does my library on the phone have to be wiped out. Who had the warped thought to come up with this genius idea.

I cannot express how disappointing this was for me to find out.
I want my music to be mobile, I don't want to have to copy it to every computer I want to listen to it on. I want to listen to it from the device, and be able to buy a new album at work or at home. This is a major disappointment for me, as every other device I have owned including my iPod Touch had this capability. I could authorize 5 machines and manually sync, and the music on that device could be played and managed on those authorized machines. For example, my wife has her own music collection, and I have mine, but we have a media center connected to our flat-screen in the living room, that we use for playing music when we are entertaining guests, and with our old iPods and iPod Touch devices, we could unplug one of our devices and plug the other persons in and listen to music from both our libraries without copying the music to that computer, as long as we authorized that machine for the both of us. Now with our iPhones there is no way to keep our seperate librarys and be able to play music on multiple computers in our house and at work, which we have always been able to do until our iPhones. The whole point of the iPhone for me was to be able to combine two devices and now because of the lack of this feature I still have to keep all our iPods around too... Dumb. I almost took our phones back because of this, and if apple doesn't fix it, I probably won't buy another. They should have at least mentioned this little fact before selling the devices to us. I know it's a different device, but it's similar enough that you expect it to work the same as the iPod and iPod Touch. It's not like I am wanting to be able to copy music from the device to multiple machines, it's exactly the opposite... I just want to be able to copy music to the device and listen to it at home and at work... why all apples other devices do this, and the iPhone doesn't is completely perplexing to me, and a serious oversight on there part. This pill would not be so hard to swallow if I had been warned about this prior to dropping almost a grand for iPhones for myself and my wife, expecting what I saw as a more advanced device to work at least as good as the other similar devices I own did.

  • Can I install Lion over Snow Leopard without erasing and restoring hard drive?

Been reading a lot about downloading Lion. Recommended to back up hard drive to ext. drive, erase hard drive, install Lion and then re-install apps and files from ext. drive. Can I just install Lion over Snow Leopard without erasing all apps and files on hard drive?

If you do an upgrade install then be sure to do this first:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Make a bootable backup just in case. Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

  • Replaced my computer. Cant sync my ipod to new computer without erasing and loading the empty library on the new computer. Any ideas?

I replaced my computer. When I try to load my music from my ipod to the new computer's itunes, the only option is: "this ipod is synced to another library. Do you wish to erase and load with this library".  The new computers library is of course empty. Any ideas?

You should be able to recover the media currently on the iPod with the tips in  this post from forum regular Zevoneer.
If you are in the US you should be able to download purchased tracks that are still on sale in the iTunes store on demand once you sign into your iTunes account. If you live anywhere else you may find that a request to redownload your previous purchases might be granted, but the store is under no obligation. You were reminded to back them up at the time of purchase.

  • Can I Transfer My Harddrive Into Another PB Without Erasing and Installing?

    Hello kind people.
I have a new PB 12" on the way and I will be wanting to put my current 120GB in to it.
If I remember right, in the old days with Wallstreet and Pismo, I would have to erase and reinstall the system software because the OS didn't like being in a new "environment"
Again, I could be wrong about that... that's beside the question, which is....
Can I take my 120 out, physically install it in the new PB, turn it on and be off and running?
Or is a backup (which I will do regardless) and a clean install recomended?
    Thank you.
    Dave

OS X is totally hardware independent for as long as your using an up-to-date installation and (currently) stick with one architecture. (Though people have hacked together their own, universal 10.4 to boot on Intel and PPC. 10.5 will be universal anyway.)
Generally, we do not recommend running a version of OS X that's older then the one originally installed on your other Mac due to potential driver issues. The 12" PowerBook configurations however haven't changed since January 2005, means you can even run 10.3.9.
You shouldn't come across any problems at all.
However, you should be careful about voiding your warranty by installing something, that isn't listed as a user replaceable part, - assuming your buying a new PB. You might want to contact Apple or your local dealer.

  • Can I manually add music WITHOUT 'Erasing and Syncing'

I've always been able to import individual songs from my iMac to my iPhone - however, I recently got a MacBook, and now all I'm able to do is create a new playlist under the little "iPhone" badge that appears once you connect it to the computer. Like when you click and drag a song with your iPhone connected, a bar slides out from the right side that typically allowed me to then drop it onto "Ethan's iPhone" which would in turn sync the song.
I believe the solution to that is to check 'manually manage music and videos' under the iPhone settings page in iTunes - however, it then asks me to erase all of the music on my iPhone and sync it with my MacBook. But I would then lose a large majority of what I have since I imported a lot through CD's on my iMac.
Is there anyway around this? I really just want to import one or two individual songs - not erase everything.

Just add the songs you want to your iTunes library, go to 'iPhone', go to 'on this iPhone' and click 'autofill' at the bottom right

  • Anyone know how to add audio without image and still use autoplay feature?

Does anyone know how I can add audio to a webpage without having to add an image and still be able to use the autoplay feature? Adding as hyperlink doesn't accomplish what I'm after. Thanks in advance for the education!

You can use the "hidden" song file method...

You don't have to hide it completely if you don't want to - just reduce it to a small dot.

  • How to avoid erase and sync when choosing to manually manage media?

I have bought a new iMac and formatted my old Macbook. Now, I am starting with a new iTunes library. I want to add more songs to my iPhone manually (choosing the new ones and adding them and leaving some out) without erasing and syncing, as that would erase my entire iPhone of all my hard-earned purchases. PLEASE help!

Did you backup all your documents and data first? Normally your user profile contains a Music folder which in turn holds the iTunes folder. All the important details of your library are in there, with the media below in a folder called iTunes Media. If you lose this information and then connect your device to an empty iTunes library it will want to clean out the device and start over. Switching to manual management carries the same penalty, at least as far as the media is concerned.
You should be able to transfer your purchases into a newly authorised library, backup the device, recover any non-store purchased media with the tips in  this post from forum regular Zevoneer, then restore the device from the backup you just made. That should  preserve all your data and switch the assocation of the device to the new machine. I've had positive feedback on this method from other users but I've never had to test it personally as I backup my library.

  • Syncing with another Itunes library without erasing my burned CDs

Installed Itunes on my second computer. When I dock the Ipod shuffle a message appears:
"the ipod "------'s ipod is synced with another itunes library. do you want to erase this ipod and sync with this i tunes library? an ipod can be synced with only one itunes library at a time. erasing and syncing replaces the contents of this ipod with the contents of this itunes library"
press "erase and sync" or "cancel"
my problem: i don't want my ipod shuffle's contents erased because i have a lot of contents from cds i burned. these songs from the cds are not in the library! but they're all in the library of the other computer. now i can't even buy songs because ipod is not synced. please help!

Is there a way to dock a 2nd gen ipod shuffle with another PC without erasing and syncing with the new PC? I want to be able to sync my ipod with my home PC and then be able to plug it in at work and view the tracks on the shuffle. I don't want to erase anything, just view the tracks in Itunes on the 2nd PC. Is there a way to do this?

  • Partition without erasing disc?

Is there any way to partition a disc without erasing and reformatting? I'm afraid I already know the answer but thought I'd ask anyhow?
    Steve

    Hi Steven:
As noted, there are a couple of utilities. Drive Genius (from Prosoft Engineering is one, and DiskStudio (from Micromat) is the other.
I've tried Drive Genius once, and was not happy with the results. The new partition with the OS on it booted fine, and I could use the second partition for data, but neither Disk Utility or any Mac OS installer (OS 9 or Panther) would see either partition.
I haven't tried DiskStudio yet, so I don't know whether it's any better. I trust Micromat's other tools (esp. TechTool Pro), but until I have an opportunity to test it on a new system, can't recommend it.
The best solution by far is to clone your system to an external firewire hard drive, partition your internal drive with Disk Utility, then clone your system back.
